Raymond E. Ferguson

Mr. Raymond E. Ferguson, 85 of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at 1:51 P.M. at the Hannibal Regional Hospital in Hannibal, Missouri.

He was born May 10, 1923 in Williamstown, Missouri, the son of Guy and Rhoda Thrasher Ferguson. On December 16, 1951 he married Esther Suechting in Basco, Illinois.

Mr. Ferguson was a lifelong farmer. He began farming in Missouri and moved to Illinois in 1948. Early in their marriage he and his wife lived in Burnside, IL and later moved to the farm west of LaHarpe. He was a member of the Eagles Club, the Moose Lodge and the Global Truth Ministries of Carthage. He enjoyed bluegrass music, camping and animals. He raised both cattle and hogs.

Surviving are his wife, three sons, Larry ((Jackie) Ferguson of Blandinsville, Illinois, Jerry (Julie) Ferguson, and Terry (Patti) Ferguson all of LaHarpe, one daughter, Sherry (Larry Cornelius) Ferguson of LaHarpe, 8 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Gary Ferguson, one sister, Bertha Briscoe, his parents and step-mother, Chloe Ferguson.

Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, April 5, 2009 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Rev. James Fox officiating. Burial will be in the Moss Ridge cemetery, Carthage, Illinois with Aaron Ferguson officiating. Friends may call after 3:00 P.M. Saturday at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Saturday. A memorial fund has been established for the American Heart Association, Global Truth Ministries and the Hancock County Ambulance.

Kathryn R. Foglesong

Mrs. Kathryn R. Foglesong, 88, of Dallas City, Illinois passed away Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at 2:10 P.M. at The Elms Nursing Home in Macomb, Illinois.

She was born September 10, 1920 in Adrian, Illinois, the daughter of Enileme D. and Eleanor Smelser Zern. She was married to Jesse Foglesong. They later divorced.

She worked at Sheaffer Pen Company in Fort Madison, Iowa for 32 years, retiring in 1982. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for over 50 years. She enjoyed sewing and gardening.

She is survived by two daughters, Frances K. Crupper of Ivesdale, Illinois and Ellen Poulter of Blandinsville, Illinois, one son Jesse F. Foglesong of Quincy, Illinois, 6 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, three sisters, Joan Roberts and June Ellis both of Dallas City, Julia Danner of Kahoka, Missouri and one brother George Zern of Burlington, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Alma Jean Duffy.

Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, January, 17, 2009 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Pastor Al Simonson officiating. Burial will be in the Harris cemetery near Dallas City. Friends may call between 4:00 and 8:00 P.M. Friday at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends Saturday from 9:00 A.M. until time of services. A memorial fund has been established for The Elms or the McDonough District Hospice.

Charles Ludwig Foresman

Mr. Charles Ludwig Foresman, 91, of Dallas City, Illinois passed away Wednesday, May 6, 2009 at 9:33 P.M. at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa.

He was born April 19, 1918 near Dallas City, the son of Edward and Blanche Heisler Foresman. On January 10, 1946 he married Madaline Lee in Raritan, Illinois.

Mr. Foresman served in the US Army in World War II. He served in the European Theater under Gen. George Patton and took part in major battles at Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe and was wounded three times. He was awarded the Purple Heart Medal, 1 Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, the American Theater Ribbon, the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with 4 Bronze Battle Stars, 3 Overseas Service Bars, 1 Service Stripe and Good Conduct Medal.

He farmed near Dallas City for many years. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dallas City, a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, a member of the VFW in Carthage, the Dallas City American Legion Post 297 and the 4th Armored Division Association. He also served on the board of the former Oak Grove School and the Harris cemetery for many years.

He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Marcella Coffman of Surprise, Arizona and Margaret Ann Kindig of Burlington, Iowa, four sons, Maurice Foresman of Littleton, Colorado, Charles Foresman of Summerfield, North Carolina, Joseph Foresman of Des Moines, Iowa and John Foresman of Granite Bay, California, 15 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Merlin Foresman and four sisters, Bertha Scanlan, Erma Anderson, Leatha Foresman and Genevieve Foresman.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 A.M. Monday, May 11, 2009 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dallas City with Father Tony Trosley officiating. Burial, with Military Rites, will be in the Harris cemetery near Dallas City. The family will meet with friends at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City, Sunday from 3:00 until 6:00 P.M. with the rosary recited at 6:00 P.M. A memorial fund has been established for St. Peter and Paul School, Nauvoo, IL and the Dallas City American Legion Post 297.

Clarence Fritz

Clarence Fritz, age 97 of Pontoosuc, Illinois died at 4:20 a.m. Monday February 9, 2009 in the Fort Madison Community Hospital in Fort Madison, Iowa.

He was born October 11, 1911 in Culbertson, Nebraska, the son of Fred and Milda Wagner Fritz. On August 27, 1955, he married Rosetta (Jones) Settles in Big Bear Lake, California. She preceded him in death on November 13, 2007.

Mr. Fritz served in the United States Navy during World War II, and was a Cub Scout Leader for several years in the Los Angeles area. He retired from the Carrier Corporation in 1972 after thirty seven years as a welding instructor and supervisor. After his retirement, he moved to Pontoosuc, where he enjoyed gardening and woodworking.

Survivors include one daughter - Lana JoAnn (John) Flack of Dallas City, IL., one grandson - Bryan (Wendy) Clinton, one great granddaughter - Morgan Marie Clinton of Chino Hills, CA. He was preceded in death by his wife, two brothers, and one son- Clarence Fritz, Jr. USMC.

Graveside services with military rites will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday February 12, 2009 in the Harris cemetery with Rev. Lee Unger officiating. Friends may call after 4:00 p.m. Wednesday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday. A memorial fund has been established for the Gilpin Home of Dallas City.

Ruby M. Fry

Mrs. Ruby M. Fry, 80, of Normal, Illinois passed away Thursday, April 23, 2009 at 1:00 P.M. at the LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center, LaHarpe, Illinois

She was born September 11, 1928 in Louisville, Illinois, the daughter of Thomas and Mabelle Brown Hendricks. On August 7, 1947 she married Louis C. Fry in Peoria, Illinois. He preceded her in death on September 3, 1992.

She is survived by one son, Jerry (Marty) Fry of Tennessee, Illinois, three grandchildren, Shelley Lanham, Mike (Lori) Fry and Cathy (Scott) Timler, one great-granddaughter, Raquel Lanham, and four sisters, Mary Cain of Wisconsin, Alta Holloway of North Carolina, Shirley Chavers, of Rockford, IL and Millie Rosson of Bloomington.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and four brothers.

Private family services will be held at a later date. Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe is assisting with arrangements.

John Giffin

John Giffin, age 84 of Novi, Michigan, formerly of the Stronghurst area, died August 14, 2009 in Michigan. He was the beloved husband of Bonnie. Loving father of Dr. David (Susan) Giffin of Centenial, CO, and Julie (Chris) Ashton of Omaha, NE. Loving grandfather of Stacey, Erin, Peter, and Rachel Giffin and Luke and Caroline Ashton. Visitation will take place Sunday, 2-8pm at McCabe Funeral Home, 31950 W. 12 Mile Rd., Farmington Hills. In state Monday, 10am until time of funeral at 11am, Highland Park Baptist Church, 28600 Lahser Rd., Southfield. Memorial contributions may be made to Southfield Christian School or Compassion Evangelican Hopital, Guinea, West Africa.

Local graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday August 19, 2009 in the Stronghurst cemetery.

Leonard L. Gilpin

Mr. Leonard L. Gilpin, 80, of Dallas City, Illinois passed away Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at 6:20 PM at his home.

He was born February 24, 1929 in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of Oscar William and Gertrude Decker Gilpin. On August 28, 1950 he married Dorothy Maynard near Niota, Illinois.

Early in life Mr. Gilpin worked for the Nauvoo Rock Quarry. Later, he worked for the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant and most recently worked as a commercial fisherman.

He enjoyed crossword puzzles, drawing, fish fries and his grandchildren. He also enjoyed music and played the harmonica, guitar and spoons.

He is survived by his wife, 3 sons, Russell Gilpin of Niota and Fred and Lenny Gilpin, both of Leisureland, 1 daughter, Sherry Brown of Dallas City, 14 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, 1 brother Raymond Gilpin of Hamilton and 2 sisters, Pauline Coleman of Galesburg and Leona Seidler of Dallas City.

He was preceded in death by 1 daughter, Elizabeth McSparen and 5 brothers and 1 sister.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, March 2, 2009 at Myers cemetery, rural Niota, IL with Pastor Louis Day officiating. There will be no visitation. A memorial fund has been established. Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City is assisting with arrangements.

Kathrine Mae Glisan

Mrs. Kathrine Mae Glisan, age 90 of Denmark, Iowa passed away Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at 4:10 P.M. at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington, Iowa.

She was born October 20, 1918 in Disco, Illinois, the daughter of Sidney Chester and Sophronia McCord Link. On February 27, 1937 she married Robert G. Glisan in Macomb, Illinois. He preceded her in death on August 15, 1996.

Mrs. Glisan and her husband farmed near LaHarpe, Illinois for many years. They moved to the Denmark area in 1958 where they continued farming. She also worked as a nurses aid in the Pediatric Department at the former Mercy Hospital in Burlington. She then worked at Sheaffer Pen Company in Fort Madison, Iowa for 20 years. She was a member of the White Dots at Sheaffer Pen, the Denmark Senior Citizens and the LaHarpe Christian Church. She enjoyed knitting afghans, sewing and gardening. She had a loving caring heart and hands that often offered help to her friends and family.

Surviving are three daughters, Patricia (Ron) Cox of Poplar Grove, Illinois, Marjorie (Paul) Ruebush of Orange Park, Florida and Juanita (Marvin) Anderson of Wever, Iowa, two sons, Ron (Louanne) Glisan of Leaf River, Illinois and Roger (Ellen) Glisan of San Antonio, Texas, 13 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, 1 expected great-great-grandchild, one brother, Eldon (Hazel) Link of Quincy, Illinois, one sister, Helen Ruth White of Carlinville, Illinois and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, including her twin, Herman Link and Kenneth, John and Vernon Link and three sisters, Lola Cooper, Lois Idel Kreps and Vivian Link.

Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, May 9, 2009 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Rev. John Simpson officiating. Burial will be in the LaHarpe cemetery. Friends may call after 2:00 P.M. Friday at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Friday. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established for the Great River Hospice House, West Burlington, IA or the Kensington Assisted Living, Fort Madison, IA.

Julianne "Julie" Good

Julianne “Julie” Good, 66, of Dallas City, Illinois passed away Monday, July 20, 2009 at 7:45 P.M. at the Memorial Hospital in Carthage, Illinois.

She was born May 13, 1943 in Macomb, Illinois, the daughter of Russell E. and Susan J. Hermetet Good.

She was a 1961 graduate of Western High School in Macomb and later graduated from Gradwohl School of Medical Technology in St. Louis, Missouri. She lived in Texas, Ohio, Arizona and Biloxi, Mississippi. Following hurricane Katrina, she moved to Dallas City in 2005. She had worked as a medical lab technician, x-ray tech, operated a health food store and fitness center. She worked for a casino in Biloxi for 15 years before moving to Dallas City.

She is survived by 2 sisters, Sara (Richard) Smith of Blandinsville, Illinois and Janet (William) Prince of Columbia, Maryland and sixteen nieces and nephews and several great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Kathleen Greer Farley, one niece and two nephews.

There will be no services. Her body has been donated to medical science. A memorial fund has been established for the Lomax Ambulance Service or the Blandinsville Fire and Rescue. Contributions may be sent in care of Banks & Beals Funeral Home, PO Box 503, LaHarpe, IL 61450.

Edna M. Patterson

Mrs. Edna M. Patterson, 90, of Dallas City, Illinois passed away Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at 7:30 A.M. at the Heritage House in Carthage, Illinois.

She was born February 1, 1919 in Lomax, Illinois, the daughter of Harvey and Martha Luella Waterman Thompson. On August 10, 1940 she married Harold Patterson in Burlington, Iowa.

He preceded her in death on June 16, 1999.

Edna lived in the Dallas City area all of her life. She graduated from Dallas City High School and was a member of the Dallas City First Christian Church. She was also a member of the quilting club and worked as a bookkeeper for her husband’s business, Patterson Auto Salvage.

She is survived by two sons, Lane Patterson of Tucson, Arizona and Randy (Lynette) Patterson of Bushnell, Illinois, one daughter, Lori Patterson of Belgrade, Montana, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, two daughters, Karen Sue Patterson and Sherry Sparrow, five brothers and one sister.

Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, January 2, 2010 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with James Oliver officiating. Burial will be in the Durham cemetery, Durham, IL. The family will meet with friends from noon until time of services Saturday, at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established for the Blessing Hospice of Hancock County.

Dick R. Pence

Mr. Dick R. Pence, 82, of Dallas City, Illinois died at 945 a.m. Sunday, March 22, 2009 at the Oak Lane Nursing and Rehab Center in Stronghurst, Illinois.

He was born November 30, 1926 in Dallas City, the son of Virgil and Ethel Mae Dickson Pence. On October 26, 1947 he married Shirley J. Miller in Dallas City.

Mr. Pence had farmed for many years near Dallas City. He graduated from Dallas City High School in 1944 and was a graduate of Coyne Electrical School in Chicago, Illinois. He then served in the Air Force Reserves. Prior to his marriage he had worked for Westinghouse Corporation in Peoria. In 1949, he moved his family to the family farm, where they raised their three children. He was member, and had served as Deacon and Elder of the Dallas City First Christian Church. He was very devoted to his family and church. He enjoyed fishing, square dancing, and painting rocks to look like lady-bugs. He attended many craft shows and was known as the "Lady-Bug Man".

Surviving are his wife, two daughters, Pam (Otho) Tate and Kathy (Had) Gracey all of Dallas City, one son, Randy Pence of Phoenix, Arizona, four grandchildren, Aaron (DeAnn) Tate, Matthew (Lisa) Tate, Daniel (Jennifer) Gracey and Jerred (Lindsey Feigert) Gracey, six great-grandchildren- Brockton, Carly, Koben, and Logan Tate, Isabella and Madilynn Gracey, and one brother, Quinn (Nancy) Pence of Dallas City.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister in infancy, Bonnie Jo Pence.

Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday March 25, 2009 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Rev. Larry Menschel officiating. Burial with military rites will be in the Harris cemetery, near Dallas City . Visitation will be from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials have been established for the Dallas City first Christian Church, Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab, and the Lomax Ambulance Service.

Mary Frances Pieper

Mary Frances Pieper, age 90 of Dallas City, Illinois died at 3:30 p.m. Friday October 16, 2009 at the Gilpin Home in Dallas City. She was born February 27, 1919, the daughter of Kash and Estella Mae Strong. On February 12, 1942, she married William F. Pieper in Brownsville, Texas. He preceded her in death on January 26, 2003.

Mary graduated from Carthage College and Western Illinois University, where she earned her teaching degree. Early in her profession, Mary taught several different grade levels, but during most of her career, she taught in the kindergarten and first grades. Mary taught in the Dallas City/Lomax School District and retired at the age of 73. In her retirement she continued to substitute teach until the age of 80. Mary was a member of the Dallas City United Methodist Church.

Survivors include four children - Bill (SuzAnn) Pieper of Monmouth, IL., Nancy (Paul) Clampitt of Dallas City, IL., John (Teresa) Pieper of Dallas City, IL., Terri (George) Van Hagen of Burlington, IA., six grandsons, one granddaughter, three great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and over 1000 students who she loved so dearly. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers- John and Jack Strong, and her husband.

Mary’s greatest joy was her family and spending time with them. She adored her grandchildren and loved attending their school, musical, and sporting events until her health prevented her from doing so. She also loved the profession of teaching and the many rewards which came with it.

As per Mary’s request, there will be no formal visitation. Friends are invited to a “Sharing Of Memories” Tuesday October 20th from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at her former home located at 267 East Third Street in Dallas City. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday October 21st in the Harris cemetery near Dallas City. Rev. Jim Luder, former student of Mary’s, will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Hancock County Hospice and to purchase books for the Dallas City Elementary School Library. Banks & Beals Funeral Home of Dallas City is assisting with arrangements.
