Harriet J. Piles

Mrs. Harriet Jane Piles, 85, of Niota, Illinois passed away Monday, February 2, 2009 at 3:35 P.M. at the Fort Madison Community Hospital.

She was born September 30, 1923 in LaHarpe, Illinois, the daughter of Emery and Ethel Link Lefler. On December 21, 1946 she married Raymond Piles. He preceded her in death in 1993.

She was a graduate of LaHarpe High School. She worked at W.A. Sheaffer Pen Co. in Fort Madison for many years. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, attended the Grace Bible Church in Dallas City and loved spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by one son, Dennis (Melaney) Piles of Niota, two grandsons, Jamie Piles of Niota and Kory Piles of Chillicothe, Illinois, six great-grandchildren, one brother, Dale Lefler of Sliver Springs, Maryland and one niece.

She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers, Vernon and Bob Lefler and one sister, Maxine Lefler.

Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Thursday, February 5, 2009 at Banks & beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Revs. Jim Luder and Larry Menschell officiating. Burial will be in the LaHarpe cemetery. The family will meet with friends Wednesday from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established for the Grace Bible Church Youth Program or the Niota Playground.

Carlene Queisner

Carlene Queisner, 83, of San Clemente, California, passed away Thursday, February 19, 2009, at 4:35 p.m. She was born in Colusa, Illinois on October 17, 1925, the daughter of Carl and Rubye Brown Queisner.

She worked at the telephone company in Fort Madison, Iowa and also in Chicago, Illinois. Carlene moved to southern California in 1956 and worked in many areas specializing as a liaison between government regulators and land developers. She enjoyed the outdoors, the warm sunny beaches, and the climate of California.

Miss Queisner never married nor had any children, and was preceded in death by her parents, her sister-in-law Harriet (Sis) Queisner and nephew James L. Queisner. Carlene is survived by her brother, Robert G. Queisner and his children, Susan (Robert) Umthun, and Robert C. (Becky) Queisner all of Fort Madison, and Janet (Robert) Foote of St. Louis, Missouri, plus several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 11, 2009 at the Harris cemetery near Dallas City, Illinois, with Pastor Mark Binder officiating. Banks & Beals Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.

Myrtle Randall

Myrtle Randall, 102, of Macomb, Illinois, formerly of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Friday, December 18, 2009 at 7:30 P.M. at the Heartland Health Care Center in Macomb.

She was born July 22, 1907 near Blandinsville, Illinois the daughter of Edward and Sarah E. (Nelson) Randall.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great- nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents, brothers Carl, Fred and Frank Randall; sister Mabel Myers, an infant brother and sister, nieces, Lila Cox and Marjorie Armstrong and nephews Dean and Gene Randall.

She graduated from Blandinsville High School in 1925 and from Western Illinois State Teachers College in 1930 with a B.E. Degree in Science and Physical Education. She did graduate work at the University of Iowa and Western Illinois University. She lived in LaHarpe for 62 years, moving to Macomb in 1997.

She taught school in Illinois for thirty-three years including rural schools, Health and Physical Education in Joliet Public Schools, LaHarpe Elementary, Good Hope Elementary and Colchester High School Science and Physical Education. After retiring from teaching she was Unit Secretary at Carthage Memorial Hospital for several years.

She had received a Lindley Scholarship, a special Palmer Certificate, WIU Athletic Letters, RSVP seven year Service Award and Memorial Hospital five and ten year Service Pins.

Myrtle was a member of the WIU 50 year Alumni Club, national, state and local Retired Teacher Associations and a former member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority.

She became a member of Old Bedford Christian Church as a teen and transferred to LaHarpe Christian Church in 1935 where she has served as a teacher, secretary of Missionary Circle, Secretary and Treasure of TNT Class and helping in other activities.

Services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Wednesday, December 23, 2009 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Mark Mathew officiating. Burial will be in the South cemetery at Blandinsville. There will be no formal visitation with the family but friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 4:00 until 8:00 P.M. and Wednesday from 9:00 A.M. until time of services. A memorial fund has been established for the LaHarpe Christian Church, the Everly House in Macomb or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Layla D. Rashid

Layla Diane Rashid, 28, of Orchard Lake, Michigan passed away Wednesday, October 28, 2009 at her home.

She was born March 30, 1981 in Fort Madison, Iowa, the daughter of Stanley F. and Brenda S. Gilpin Rashid.

Layla was a graduate of the West Bloomfield, MI High School and recieved an Associate degree from Oakland Community College. She also attended Oakland University. She enjoyed music, writing and working as a make-up consultant. She was currently employed doing computer research for Dusek Network, Inc.

She is survived by her mother and step-father, Brenda and Richard F. Dusek of Orchard Lake, MI, her father and step-mother, Stanley F. and Eva Rashid of Kingman, AZ, one brother, Omar Richard Rashid of Orchard Lake, one step-brother, Dan Dusek of Chicago, two stepsisters, Kathy Dusek of Bay City, MI and Debbie Metcalf of Nashville, TN, her maternal grandparents, Frank and Dolores Gilpin of Pontoosuc, Illinois, her uncles, Mike (Lori) Gilpin of Dallas City, IL and Rick (Terry) Rashid of Redmond, WA and her aunt, Norma Rashid of Fort Thomas, KY. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Farris and Ramona Rashid.

Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, November 3, 2009 at the First Christian Church in Dallas City with Tony Newton officiating. Burial will be in the Harris cemetery near Dallas City. Friends may call after 4:00 P.M. Monday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Monday. A memorial fund has been established for the American Heart Association.

Edythe A. Richards

Mrs. Edythe A. Richards, 92, of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away at 10:35 A.M. Monday, March 30, 2009 at Heartland Health Care Center in Macomb, Illinois. She was born April 17, 1916 in Wyaconda, Missouri, the daughter of Coleman and Ole Goodson Peterson. On June 17, 1934, she married Leonard Richards in Peoria County, Illinois. He preceded her in death in October of 1974.

Earlier in her life, Edythe had lived in the Peoria area where she worked at the Boston Glove Factory, Pier Marquette Hotel, and Caterpiller Tractor Company. Later, she and her husband owned and operated a vacation trailer park in Apache Junction, Arizona. She returned to this area in 1975 following the death of her husband. She had lived in Sciota, Carthage, and most recently, LaHarpe.

Survivors include one daughter - Charlene (Edwin) Hillers of LaHarpe, two grandsons - Edwin Hillers II and Scot Hillers, one sister, several nieces and nephews, and several great nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one brother and three sisters.

At Edythe’s request, there will be no visitation or services. Private burial will be in the LaHarpe cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to McDonough District Hospice, Fountain Green Fire Department, or the American Cancer Society. Banks & Beals Funeral Home of LaHarpe is assisting the family with arrangements.

Frances Y. Riley

Frances Y. Riley, age 91 of Dallas City, Illinois died at 12:35 a.m. Tuesday March 31, 2009 in the Fort Madison Community Hospital in Fort Madison, Iowa. She was born April 14, 1917 in Dallas City, the daughter of Claude and Gracie Maude Hull Shaffner. On August 15, 1943, she married Ellsworth W. Riley in Dallas City. He preceded her in death on March 2, 2002.

Mrs. Riley was a lifelong resident of Dallas City. She had worked as a clerk in the Dallas City Post Office for thirty years. Earlier in life she had worked in the family grocery store and as a ticket taker at the former Dallas City Theater. She and her husband also owned many apartment buildings. She enjoyed volunteering at the Carthage Memorial Hospital for many years, and loved spending time with her grandchildren. She was a former member of the Order Of The Eastern Star, and a member of the Dallas City First Christian Church.

Survivors include one daughter - Clancy Marguerite Riley of Carthage, Illinois, one son - Kirk (Yiling) Riley of Dallas City, six grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one granddaughter - Dena Kay Jacobs, one sister - Joanne Moyes, and one brother - Koll Shaffner.

Visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday April 3, 2009 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City. Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday April 4th in the Dallas City cemetery, with Rev. Larry Menschel officiating. Memorials have been established for St. Jude Children’s Hospital and Boys and Girls Town USA .

Stephen L. Riney

Stephen L. Riney, age 61 of Hamilton, Illinois died at 4:40 p.m. Thursday July 16, 2009 in the Montebello Manor Nursing Center in Hamilton. He was born July 18, 1947 in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of James L. and Anna V. Pugh Riney.

Stephen was a graduate of Keokuk High School. He had been employed at Vista Bakery in West Burlington for fourteen years. He enjoyed working with cars, and loved animals. He was a member of the St. Patrick Catholic Church in St. Patrick, MO.

Survivors include two daughters - Amy Gudgel of Pawnee, IL., Lisa Flynn of Springfield, IL., two sons - Stephen T. Riney and William Riney, both of Springfield, IL., two sisters - Amy Notestien of Stronghurst, IL., Mary Ann Martins of Warsaw, IL., and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

No visitation is planned. Burial will be in the St Patrick cemetery in St. Patrick, Missouri. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Banks & Beals Funeral Home of Stronghurst is assisting with arrangements.

Donald E. Rings

Mr. Donald E. Rings, 69, of rural Dallas City, Illinois passed away Friday, June 26, 2009, of natural causes, while farming near Colusa, Illinois.

He was born Mach 3, 1940 near Fountain Green, Illinois, the son of Fred and Marjorie Lambert Rings. On April 1, 1961 he married Beverly E. Schuster in Carthage, Illinois.

Mr. Rings moved from Fountain Green to the Colusa area when he was in the fifth grade. He graduated from Colusa High School in 1958 and farmed all of his adult life near Colusa. He served in various capacities with many organizations, including the McDonough Telephone Coop, where he served on the board for over 20 years and was past board chairman. He was a Rock Creek Township Trustee and was also a member of the Colusa United Methodist Church, where he was currently serving as chairman of the board.

He is survived by his wife, two sons, Randall (Danielle) Rings of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Russell (Nicol) Rings of Nauvoo, Illinois, three grandchildren, Abigail Rings, William Rings and Devin Rings and one sister, Mary Havens of Sutter, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, July 2, 2009 at the Colusa United Methodist Church with Ron Leonard and Bob Wagner officiating. Burial will be in the Thornber cemetery near Powellton Illinois. Friends may call after 2:00 P.M. Wednesday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City where the family will meet with friends from 5:00 until 8:00 P.M. Wednesday. A memorial fund has been established for the Colusa United Methodist Church.

Betty LaVerna Rodeffer

Betty LaVerna Rodeffer, age 75 of rural Stronghurst, Illinois, died at 12:47 a.m. Sunday March 15, 2009 in the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa. She was born May 20, 1933 near Stronghurst, the daughter of Judd C. and Lois Rankin Wetterling. On August 30, 1952, she married James Rodeffer in Burlington, Iowa.

Mrs Rodeffer was a graduate of Terre Haute, Illinois High School. She had worked at Sylvania Corporation, and later at General Electric in Burlington, retiring in 1995. She loved horses and all animals, and was a member of the American Paint Horse Association.

Survivors include her husband, one son - Randy Rodeffer of rural Stronghurst, and one granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother - Wayne Wetterling, sisters - Wanetta and Christine, and twin sisters in infancy.

Friends may call as they desire from 3:00 until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst. No family visitation is planned. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday March 18, 2009 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst with Rev. Tom Wright officiating. Burial will follow in the Terre Haute cemetery, Terre Haute, Illinois. A memorial has been established for the Heart Fund.

Leona Rae Russell

Leona Rae Russell, 34, of Lomax, Illinois, passed away at her home Sunday, September 20, 2009. She was born September 14, 1975 in Burlington, Iowa the daughter of Michael and Brenda Phillips Russell.

Leona had attended Fort Madison High School and Dallas City High School. She had worked in the offices of Catfish Bend Casino for four years

Her interests included spending afternoons boating on local rivers and lakes, attending concerts, playing cards, spending time with her young nephews, watching HGTV and shoe shopping. Leona was an accomplished decorator and handy-person, who once upholstered a sofa using only a handsaw, staple gun, staples and a hammer. She possessed a unique ability to antique woodwork and art pieces using brown shoe polish. She was also a very talented at creating professional-looking floral arrangements, a skill friends and family utilized during holidays and for special events.

Leona dreamed of traveling, and was planning a much-anticipated cruise over the next year.

Survivors include her parents - Brenda Windsor and Michael and Kathy Russell, of Lomax, Doug Windsor, of Fort Madison, IA., grandmother, Millie Philips of Dallas City, two brothers -Michael (Donna) Russell of Atlanta, GA., Adam Windsor of Jacksonville, FL., one sister Ashley (Mike) Rung of Fort Madison, one step brother - Dustin Forquer, one step sister - Melissa Kettler, both of New London, Iowa, three nephews, several aunts, uncles and cousins, as well as hundreds of friends.

Services will be held Friday, September 25 at 6 PM at the Elk’s Lodge of Fort Madison, 719 Avenue H. A Celebration of Life gathering will follow at the same location. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to a memorial fund, which has been established. Contributions can be sent to Ashley Rung at 1113 Avenue C, Ft. Madison, IA. 52627.

Frances L. Schlereth

Frances L. Schlereth, 96, of LaHarpe, IL passed away Saturday, February 21, 2009, after a final illness that began Thanksgiving Day 2008.

She was born November 12, 1912, near Fountain Green, Illinois, to Squire and Mattie Lee Humes Foster, the last of six children, and lived most of her life in the Blandinsville-LaHarpe area, though spending nearly 20 years in Florida and North Carolina.

She married Fay W. Williams of Blandinsville on November 22, 1930. He preceded her in death on October 16, 1974. In December, 1976, she married Ray Schlereth of Englewood, Florida. He preceded her in death on July 16, 1996.

Mrs. Schlereth worked for a time at Industry Mutual Insurance Company, and when 54 years old, she attended the School of Nursing in Burlington, Iowa, receiving a Licensed Practical Nursing degree. She worked in that profession for six years. She loved to read and was instrumental in helping form the Blandinsville-Hire Township Library, and served on its Board. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Englewood, FL, and attended the LaHarpe Union Church.

Mrs. Schelereth is the last of her generation in three families: Foster, Williams, and Schlereth. She is survived by one son, Charles W. ( Sandra) Williams of Glen Ellyn, Illinois, and a granddaughter, Dianne Williams and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; all five siblings, including three brothers, Arthur, Harold, and Virgil; and one granddaughter, Susan Lea Williams.

Remembrance will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, February 27, 2009, at the Banks and Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Rev. Bruce Goettsche officiating. Burial will be in the Glade City cemetery in Blandinsville, Illinois. The family will meet with friends at the funeral home Friday from 1:00 P.M. until time of services. A memorial fund has been established for the Blandinsville - Hire District Library or the Union Church Building Fund.

Ruth M. Scott

Mrs. Ruth M. Scott, 96, of Dallas City, Illinois passed away Monday, December 7, 2009 at 7:50 A.M. at the Oak Lane Nursing and Rehab in Stronghurst, Illinois.

She was born May 20, 1913 at home, near Burnside, Illinois, the daughter of Harvard and Bessie Todd Pettit. On October 6, 1935 she married Ward Scott. They later divorced.

She was raised near Burnside and attended grade school there. In 1932 she graduated from Boone, Iowa High School. She worked at Sheaffer Pen Co. in Fort Madison, Iowa for 24 years, retiring at the age of 62. She was a 50 year member and past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed gardening, flowers and needlework.

Surviving are one daughter, Marilyn (Ralph) Torrance of rural Lomax, Illinois, one son, Lynn (Mona) Scott of Stow, Ohio, seven grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren and one sister, Marjorie Myers of Sperry, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Julius, Howard and William Pettit.

Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, December 12, 2009 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Mark Pettit and Rev. Tom Wright officiating. Burial will be in the Moss Ridge cemetery in Carthage, Illinois. Friends may call after 4:00 P.M. Friday at the funeral home where Eastern Star Rites will be held at 6:00 P.M. followed by visitation with the family until 8:00 P.M. Friday. A memorial fund has been established for the Dallas City First Christian Church or the Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab.

Mary Belle Sharpe

Mrs. Mary Belle Sharpe, 89, of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Friday, February 20, 2009 at 4:50 A.M at the McDonough District Hospital in Macomb, Illinois.

She was born April 1, 1919 in LaHarpe, the daughter of Harry and Josie Byers Bradshaw. On October 28, 1938 she married Jack Sharpe in Fort Madison, Iowa. He preceded her in death on May 11, 2008.

She was a 1937 graduate of LaHarpe High School. She had served on the LaHarpe City Council, LaHarpe School Board and as an Election Judge.She was a member of the Thursday Club and the LaHarpe Christian Church. Prior to her marriage she worked at the Quill office in LaHarpe setting type. She and her husband were co-owners of Kay-Belle Pony farm in the 1950's and 60's having registered Shetland ponies and a grand champion they were so proud of. Later in life she and her husband enjoyed attending auctions. She loved animals, cooking, gardening and canning. She also operated the Sharpe Shop in LaHarpe.

She is survived by four children; Jodelle Hallowell of rural Dallas City, Illinois, Jacqueline (Gary) Eddington; Claudia (Charles) Apt; and Ted (Terri) Sharpe all of LaHarpe, eleven grandchildren; Scott Hallowell, Jamie Hallowell, Kelly (Jeff) Carroll, Ryan (Shanna) Eddington, Emily (Tyler) Dihle, Josie (John) Earle, Molly (Todd) Porter, Jason Apt, Melanie Sharpe, Jack Sharpe, and Tyler Sharpe, and 9 great-grandchildren. She and her husband also raised their nephew Dennis Sharpe for three years following his mother’s death in childbirth and while his father was serving in the army.

She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers, William and Byers Bradshaw, son-in-law, Don Hallowell, nephew, Dennis Sharpe and her niece, Carolyn Cobb.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe. Burial will be in the LaHarpe cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday between 3:00 and 8:00 P.M. A memorial fund has been established for the LaHarpe Christian Church.
