Richard Wells

Richard “Dick” Wells, 87 of Hamilton, passed away at 3:15 a.m. Monday, March 27, 2017, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa.
He was born on April 21, 1929, in Burlington, Iowa, a son of John Murphy and Madeline Jones Wells.
Dick married
Nancy McCahan on Oct. 3, 1970, in port Royal, Penn. She survives in Hamilton.
Survivors include a son, three daughters, a brother and sister, eight grandchildren and a great grandchild.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Jack Wells and Peter Wells; and step-mother, Doris Willows Wells.
Cremation rites have been accorded.
In lieu of flowers memorials have been established for Hamilton High School Athletics and Hamilton Fire Department.
A memorials service will be held at a later date.
Lamporte - St. Clair Funeral Home of Hamilton is in charge of arrangements.
Mary L. Peterson
January 11, 1936 - March 29, 2017
Mary L. Peterson, age 81, of Stronghurst, passed away at 5:15 a.m. Wednesday, March 29, 2017, at the Gateway Inn in Sullivan.
She was born Jan. 11, 1936, near Niota, the daughter of Harry and Myrtle Lora Hinman Northup.
On Dec. 9, 1983, she married
Algie Dee Peterson in Adrian.
Survivors locally include her husband; one daughter, Jackie (Kendall) Hetrick of Lomax; step children, Michael (Chris) Peterson of Oquawka, and Melissa McIntire of Stronghurst; mother-in-law, Elsie Newlan of Lomax; three step grandchildren; one step great grandchild; sister, Patsy Loos of Camp Point; and brother, Harold Northup of Dallas City.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one half-brother, Darrell Hopper.
Visitation is from noon to 2 p.m. Monday April 3, 2017, at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst.
The funeral is at 2 p.m. Monday at Banks & Beals, with Rev. Stanley Pratt officiating.
Burial will follow in the Olena cemetery, near Stronghurst.
A memorial fund has been established for the family.
G. Philip Allen
Mr. G. Philip Allen, 85, of Dallas City, Illinois passed away at 11:45 A.M. Monday, March 12, 2007 at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa.
He was born August 1, 1921 in Hutchinson, Kansas, the son of George V. and Edith E. (Greenbank) Allen. On October 12, 1947 he married
Mary E. Manuel in Avon, Illinois.
The Allen family came to Illinois in 1936, when they purchased the Dallas City Enterprise.
He was a graduate of the Dallas City Community High School and Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Missouri. He was sports editor of the college newspaper, The Megaphone; president of Mu Theta Nu fraternity and a member of the C-S golf team.
Phil served in World War II as an Army Air Corps weather officer in the South Pacific. After returning from the service in 1946, he joined his parents in publishing the Dallas City Enterprise and continued for 40 years, retiring in1986. Following his retirement, he was employed part time for a number of years as a letterpress operator at Dodd Printing and Stationary in Fort Madison.
For more than 50 years Phil was a member of the Dallas City Volunteer Fire Department, having served as assistant chief. In later years he was the radio operator at the fire station. He was also a member of the Dallas City United Methodist Church, having served as financial secretary and trustee.
He is survived by his wife, Mary, two daughters, Patricia Allen-Stewart of Round Lake Heights, Illinois and Maria Allen of Chicago, two sons, Andrew Allen of Chicago and Anthony Allen of Kewanee, Illinois, five grandchildren and one sister, Marian Anderson of Midway, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Saturday, March 17, 2007 at the Dallas City United Methodist Church with Rev. Beckie Laumeier officiating. Following the services, the body will be cremated and a private burial will be held at Harris cemetery near Dallas City. Friends may call after 3:00 P.M. Friday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Friday. A memorial fund has been established for the Dallas City Fire Department, the Great River Home Health Care and Hospice, and the family also requests that blood donations, in Phil’s memory, be donated at the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center, 1000 N. Roosevelt Ave., Burlington, IA.
Marlene M. Barclay
Mrs. Marlene M. Barclay, 59, of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Thursday, April 19, 2007 at 7:45 P.M. at the Heartland Health Care Center in Macomb, Illinois.
She was born July 7, 1947 in LaHarpe The daughter of Oscar and Erice Campbell Mittermyer. She was first married
to James Day. Following his death she married
Larry Barclay on July 27, 1982 in Carthage, Illinois. He died December 12, 1994.
She attended nursing school in Carthage and worked as an L.P.N. at nursing homes in LaHarpe, Macomb and Prairie City.
She is survived by one son, Roger Day, one daughter, Nicole Fowler and her father, Oscar “Bud” Mittermyer all of LaHarpe and five grandchildren.
Besides her husbands she was preceded in death by her mother and one daughter Ramona Day.
Following cremation, graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday April 25, 2007 at the LaHarpe cemetery with Darren Beachy officiating. A memorial fund has been established for the American Cancer Society and My Mathews House of Carthage. Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe is in charge of arrangements.
Robert S. DeHaven
Mr. Robert S. DeHaven, 83, of Blandinsville, Illinois passed away Monday, July 2, 2007 at his home.
He was born April 24, 1924 in Burnside, IL., the son of Henry and Ella Salisbury DeHaven. On June 21, 1947 he married
Christine Hasten in Dallas City, Illinois. She preceded him in death on June 4, 1997.
Mr. DeHaven was an army veteran of World War II. He had managed the Granite Foundry in Tennessee, IL. for many years, and also farmed. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and was a member of the Blandinsville American Legion, Odd Fellows Lodge, and the Old Bedford Christian Church.
Survivors include one son - Dennis (and Diana) DeHaven of Blandinsville, IL., one daughter - Debbie (Steve) Foster of Albany, IL., 4 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, 2 sisters - Bessie McConnell of Burlington, IA., and Maxine Beckwith of Peoria, IL. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by one son - John H. DeHaven, one daughter in infancy- Cathy DeHaven, one brother - Newell DeHaven and his son-in-law, Lloyd Thompson Jr.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday July 6, 2007 in the Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe. Burial with military rites will be in the McConnell cemetery near Fountain Green. Friends may call after 2:00 P.M. Thursday at Banks & Beals, where the family will be present from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Thursday. Memorials have been established for the Old Bedford Christian Church or the Blandinsville-Hire Rescue Squad.
Loretta M. Wibbell
Mrs. Loretta M. Wibbell, 68, of Dallas City, Illinois passed away Sunday, February 18, 2007 at 8:18 A.M. at the Fort Madison Community Hospital.
She was born September 6, 1938 in Peoria, Illinois, the daughter of Hubert and Bernadine Heinz Dowell. From the age of 5 weeks old, she was raised by her grandparents, Ollie and Kirby Dowell in Alexis, Illinois. On October 11, 1957 she married
John O. Wibbell in Dallas City.
She attended school in Alexis and worked for Champion Spark Plug in Burlington for 20 years. She was a member of the U.A.W. Local 1237, the First Christian Church of Dallas City and the C.W.F. at her church. She loved watching clouds and sunsets.
She is survived by her husband, two sons, John A. (Laurey) Wibbell and Ricky L. (Andrea) Wibbell all of Dallas City, four grandsons, John, Lee, J. Anthony and Christopher Wibbell, one brother, Richard L. Dowell of Monmouth, Illinois, three step-brothers, Mike Clark of Lakewood, California, Pat Clark of Decatur, Illinois and Bill Clark of Oquawka, Illinois, two nieces, Diana (Chad) Allen and Dana (John) Hall, two great-nieces, Victoria and Olivia Hall and two great-nephews, Parker and Mitchell Allen. She was preceded in death by her step-sister, Sharon Gawthrop and her parents.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, February 22, 2007 at the First Christian Church in Dallas City with Rev. Doug Clark and Brent Sparrow officiating. Following the services, cremation rites will be accorded and burial, at a later date, will be at the Harris cemetery near Dallas City. Friends may call after 3:00 P.M. Wednesday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Wednesday. A memorial fund has been established for the First Christian Church of Dallas City.
Jay F. Anderson
Jay F. Anderson, age 73, of Carman, Illinois died at 11:35 A.M. Sunday August 24, 2008 in the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa. He was born December 6, 1934 near Carman, the son of Raymond E. and Mildred Tompkins Anderson. On August 31, 1963, he married
Dorothy Dooley in Carman.
Mr. Anderson was a graduate of Stronghurst High School. He was employed at B.L. Robinson Corporation for twenty three years, retiring in 1988.
Jay was known as the “Bluebird Man” of Carman. He loved to watch and feed bluebirds, and built houses and cared for them. He was also proud of having trapped and removed hundreds of moles from the sandy soil of Carman Township cemetery and for many residents in and around Carman. He was a member of the Carman United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, one daughter - Jackie (Dennis) Willson of Burlington, IA., one son - William Doran of Carman, six grandchildren - Jessica Doran, Ryan (Megan) Hassel, Sybil (Michael) Baxa, Megan Ann Hassel, Denny Willson, Allison Doran, two great grandchildren - Kamari and Giano Crews, and one sister - Laura (Alan) Westerbeck of Des Peres, MO. He was preceded in death by three brothers- Roy, Guy, and Lee Anderson and one sister - Ruth Harvey.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday August 27, 2008 in the Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst with Rev. Gene Turner officiating. Burial will be in the Carman cemetery. Friends may call after 3:00 P.M. Tuesday at Banks & Beals, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Tuesday. A memorial fund has been established, and will be designated later.
Carolyn Marie Atkins
Mrs. Carolyn Marie Atkins, 101, of LaHarpe, Illinois died at 7:15 AM Tuesday, September 16, 2008 at the LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center.
She was born February 1, 1907 in Stronghurst, Illinois, the daughter of John and Bertha Apt Fordyce. On July 6, 1934, she married
E. Laurence Atkins in Kahoka, Missouri. He died in May 1970.
She attended Stronghurst and Roseville Schools and graduated from Monmouth Hospital Nursing School in 1927. She practiced the nursing profession for several years and was Floor Supervisor at Monmouth Hospital. She and her husband lived in the Roseville area for 17 years before moving to the Disco, Illinois community in 1951. Mrs. Atkins moved to LaHarpe in 1985. She was a member of the Methodist Church in Roseville and Disco for 65 years. She has been a member of the Laharpe Union Church since 1986.
Mrs. Atkins was a long time member of the Disco Embroidery Club, Rene Cossitt, Jr. Chapter of DAR, American Legion Auxiliary at Roseville, Monmouth Nurses Alumnae, Mayflower Society, Philathea Class, LaHarpe Senior Citizens and LaHarpe Historical Society.
Survivors include one daughter-in-law, Ruth Atkins of Riverside, California, 2 grandsons, 5 granddaughters, 21 great-grandchildren, 33 great-great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-great-grandchild, 1 niece and 1 nephew and many cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, 3 brothers, 1 sister, 2 step-daughters, Margaret Walbring and Jeanne Sturhahn, 1 step son, E. Laurence Atkins, Jr. 1 grandson, 1 great-granddaughter and 2 nieces.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, September 19, 2008 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Rev. Bruce Goettsche and Pastor Rick Goettsche officiating. Burial will be in the Roseville cemetery. Friends may call after 2:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home where th family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM. A memorial fund has been established for the LaHarpe Union Church.
A. June Ault
Mrs. A. June Ault, 81, of Fort Madison, Iowa, formerly of Dallas City, Illinois, died Monday, October 20, 2008 at her home.
She was born June 14, 1927 in Princeville, Illinois, the daughter of Charles T. and Pearle E. Jones Walliker. On November 14, 1946 she married
Clarence “Dick” Ault in Princeville. He preceded her in death on April 15, 1974.
She was a graduate of Princeville High School. She and her husband owned and operated Ault Appliance and Furniture Store in Dallas City from 1965 - 1972. Later she worked for Chevron Chemical Co. In 1981 she moved to Fort Madison where she was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Silver Steppers dance troupe, enjoyed bowling and playing cards.
She is survived by one son, Robert (Susan) Ault of Gladewater, Texas, two grandchildren, Heather (Tracy) Wagnon of Austin, Arkansas and Ryan Ault of Farmington, New Mexico, 2 great-grandchildren, Justin and Dylan Wagnon and two sisters, Darlene Arnold of Tucson, Arizona and Helen Ferguson of Edmund, Oklahoma. She was preceded in death by her husband, one sister and one brother.
Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, October 23, 2008 at the First United Methodist Church in Fort Madison with Rev. Brenda Goodall officiating. Burial will be in the Princeville cemetery, Princeville, Illinois. The family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Wednesday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City. A memorial fund has been established for the American Cancer Society.
Glenn E. Ballinger
Mr. Glenn E. Ballinger, 75, of Nauvoo, Illinois passed away Sunday, November 2, 2008 at his home.
He was born September 30, 1933 near Niota, Illinois, the son of Keith and Nellie Price Ballinger. On December 19, 1953 he married
Thelma Thomas in Niota. She preceded him in death. He married
Juanita Gittings Stein on May 18, 1996 in Farmington, Iowa.
He attended Victory Grade School and was a 1951 graduate of the Dallas City High School. He worked for the TP & W Railroad and for Champion Spark Plug. He moved to Colorado where he worked for a hog confinement operation. Later he moved to Farmington, Iowa where he and 9 other men started a hog confinement operation, raising feeder pigs. He also worked for Shimik Forrest near Farmington. He retired in 1993. He moved to Nauvoo in 1997 and was a member of the Lomax, Illinois Christian Church.
He is survived by his wife, one son, Sam Koontz of Danville, Iowa, four step-children, Ronald Stein of Nauvoo, Mary Lou Stein of New Boston, Iowa, Virginia Copen of Zainesville, Ohio and Joyce Stein of Fort Madison, Iowa, eight grandchildren, Tom Koontz, Tammy Hobbs, Billy Nail, David Nail, Doug Copen, Jr., Charity Baker, Amy Yocum and Mandy Copen, 16 great-grandchildren and one sister, Dolores (Frank) Gilpin of Pontoosuc, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his first wife and his parents.
Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, November 5, 2008 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Pastor Cheryl Simpson officiating. Burial will be in the Terre Haute, Illinois cemetery. There will be no formal visitation with the family but friends are welcome to call at the funeral home between 4:00 and 8:00 P.M. Tuesday. A memorial fund has been established for the Nauvoo Ambulance Service or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Clair W. "Cappie" Bennett
Mr. Clair W. “Cappie” Bennett, 87, of rural LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Saturday, May 31, 2008 at the McDonough District Hospital in Macomb.
He was born January 27, 1921 in LaHarpe, the son of William and Ruth Hushaw Bennett. On August 31, 1941 he married
Nellie Reed in Memphis, Missouri. She died January 11, 1992. On September 19, 1992 he married
Ellen Martin in Fountain Green, Illinois.
Mr. Bennett farmed for most of his life in the Fountain Green Township. He had served on the Hancock County Grain Board and the Eagle School Board. He was a member of the Argyle Bible Church of rural Colchester, Illinois.
He is survived by his wife, Ellen, one son Donald (Kay) Bennett of Springfield, Illinois, four step-sons, Lloyd (Judy) Martin of Colchester, Illinois, Larry (Sandra) Martin of Plymouth, Illinois, Robert (Linda) Martin of Dumas, Texas and Jack (Pat) Martin of Purcell, Oklahoma, two grandchildren, twelve step-grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, thirteen step-great-grandchilden and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, two sons, Gary and Richard Bennett, one daughter, Judith Ann Bennett, three brothers, Carl, Robert and Clarence Bennett and three sisters, Elsie Clover, Vera Caldwell and Verna Huffman.
Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, June 4, 2008 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Pastor Mike Deblois officiating. Burial will be in the LaHarpe cemetery. Friends may call after 2:00 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Tuesday. A memorial has been established for the Argyle Bible Church.
Leland W. Bennett
Mr. Leland W. Bennett, 79, of Valrico, Florida, formerly of Terre Haute, Illinois passed away Monday, November 10, 2008 at 2:10 P.M. at the James A. Haley VA Hospital in Tampa, Florida.
He was born May 31, 1929 in Carthage, Illinois the son of Charles Lorenzo and Ada Susan Jones Bennett. On October 6, 1951 he married
Lois Palmer in Burlington, Iowa. She preceded him in death on April 9, 2003.
He served in the US Army, 28th Infantry Unit during the Korean War. He worked for over 20 years at the Iowa Army Ammunitions Plant in Middletown, Iowa. Later he worked for Smith Implement, Bennett and Roth Trucking, Bennett Custom Homes and Connections of Tampa Bay, Inc.
He was devoted to his family. He remained a child at heart to the end. He was known as a tireless worker with a strong work ethic and vibrant sense of humor who would reach out a helping hand to anyone in need.
He is survived by 3 daughters, Linda S. Bennett of Burlington, Iowa, Gloria Harmony of Tampa, Florida and Brenda K. Collins of Valrico, Florida, 1 son, Ron D. Bennett of Terre Haute, Illinois, 10 grandchildren, Stacie Rickleman, Emilie Orth, Ashlie Orth, Brian Harmony, Evan Harmony, Brett Bennett, Brianne Skein, Braden Bennett, Ryan Collins and Jon Collins, 3 great-grandchildren, Jacob Collins, Tyler Collins and Jordan Collins, and 1 brother, Glenn Edward Bennett of Burlington, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his wife, 1 son, Richard D. Bennett, 3 brothers, Lloyd, Elza and Donald Bennett and 2 sisters, Hazel Huffman and Helen Atkins.
Services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Monday, November 17, 2008 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Rev. Bruce Goettsche officiating. Burial with Military Rites by the LaHarpe American Legion Post 301 will be in the Aspen Grove cemetery in Burlington, Iowa. The family will meet with friends Sunday from 3:00 until 5:00 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.
John E. Berlett
Mr. John E. Berlett 73, of LaHarpe, IL passed away at 5:55 A.M. Sunday, April 20, 2008 at the McDonough District Hospital in Macomb, IL.
He was born August 25, 1934 in LaHarpe, the son of Wiley and Mae Layborn Berlett. On December 24, 1953 he married
Elaine Eddington in LaHarpe. She preceded him in death on January 17, 2003.
Mr. Berlett was a graduate of LaHarpe High School. He Farmed all of his life near LaHarpe and was a member of the LaHarpe Christian Church.
He is survived by one daughter, Deborah Jean Rupert of Galesburg, IL, one son Duane Alan Berlett of LaHarpe, 3 grandchildren, Angela Rupert Hale, Brent and Seth Berlett, 4 great-grandchildren, Samantha, Kimberly, Valerie and Connor Hale, 1 brother, Bill Berlet of LaHarpe and 1 step-brother, John Traser of LaHarpe.
He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, his step-mother, Anna Berlett, one great-grandchild one sister, Luetta Fife, one step-brother Lyell Traser, two step-sisters Dorothy Roe and Martha Davis.
Services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Rev. Larry Menschel officiating. Burial will be in the LaHarpe cemetery. Friends may call after 2:00 PM Tuesday at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Tuesday.
