Jean Seward, 75, of Springfield, died Wednesday, September 6, 2000, at U.C.S.D. Medical Center, LaJolla, Calif.
She was born February 8, 1925, in Keokuk, Iowa, the daughter of Arthur R.P. and Talitha Grimpe Hammel. She married
Claire Edwin Seward on September 11, 1949.
She is survived by a daughter, Beth (husband Richard) Rogers of Petersburg; three sons, Jeff (Judy) Seward of Indianapolis, Eric (Joy) Seward of Mahomet, and Tim Seward of Lynwood, Wash.; three grandsons, Josh and Jordan Seward of Mahomet, and Jonathan Seward of Indianapolis.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1988 and by a granddaughter, Jessica Joy Seward, on August 20, 1995.
She was Director of Children's Services for Lincoln Library, a graduate of Knox College, a board member of Springfield Community Concerts, a tap dancer with the Mature Mob, and a member of Laurel Ave. United Methodist Church, where she was active with their mission trips. She was a compassionate and caring person to everyone, especially to those in need.
Memorial services were held Wednesday, September 13, 2000, with Dr. John Hamilton officiating.

VIOLA FRAZER
February 2, 1917 - January 30, 2001
Viola Ruth Frazer, 83, of Hamilton, died Tuesday, January 30, 2001 at Montebello Health Care Center in Hamilton. She was born on February 2, 1917 in Sciota, the daughter of Gilbert and Leosa Maude Russell Litchfield. She married
George Alvin Frazer on February 26, 1942 in Kahoka. He preceded her in death on March 7, 1975.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Rex (Muriel Ruth) Covington of Elgin, Ill; one son, Gerald Lee Frazer of Atkinson, N.H.; one brother, Fay "Whitey" and wife, Margie) Litchfield of Hamilton; two grandchildren, Heather Lee Frazer Ferry of Manchester, N.H., and Barbara Diane Frazer of Fort Collins, Colo.; one sister in law, Geraldine Litchfield of Peoria; 10 nieces and nephews including Kenny Litchfield of Hamilton.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers, Gale, Keith, and Leo Litchfield; and one half brother, Arthur Pelley.
She was a graduate of Hamilton High School, and attended the First Christian Church in Hamilton. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing and completing jig-saw puzzles. She also enjoyed gardening and growing flowers. She especially enjoyed the time spent with family and friends, especially her grandchildren. She was a member of Security Stars in Hamilton, and liked taking trips with the group. She was a member of the Democratic Women's Organization of Carthage and a member of Entre Nous Club and Senior Citizens in Hamilton. For the past year, she resided at Our Home, Incorporated of Hamilton.
Services were held Saturday, February 3, 2001 at Lamporte Funeral Home of Hamilton with Revs. Randy White and Gerald Bown officiating. Burial was in Oakwood cemetery in Hamilton.
A memorial has been established in her memory.

Page G. Gray, 80, of Winter Haven, Fla., formerly of Burlington, Iowa, died Friday, February 2, 2001 at LifeCare Center Nursing Home in Winter Haven. He was born the son of Robert M. and Jesse T. (Crickett) Gray in Macomb. He married
Dorcas Werner of Burlington in 1947. He married
Jo Love Jackson of Winter Haven in 1988.
He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Mrs. Randy (Barbara) Brown of Davenport, Iowa, Mrs. Rick (Beverly) Markey of Burnside, and Mrs. Timothy (Karen) Barker of Eldon, Mo.; two sons, Michael (Shirlee) Gray of Mr. Pleasant, Mich., and Mark (Debbie) Gray of Burlington; one sister, Ardath Cranston of Moline, Ill.; one brother, Robert Gray of Leesburg, Fla.; ten grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four nephews and one niece.
He graduated from Stronghurst High School in 1938. He was a veteran of WWII, serving as a sailor in the Navy aboard the U.S. Swannee from 1942 to 1945.
After retiring as a rural Postal Carrier in 1979, he moved to Florida in 1980 and was a part time real estate agent. He was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church, Winter Haven Moose Lodge No. 1152, American Legion Post No. 8 and the Elks Lodge.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 17, at Prughs Funeral Service of Burlington, Iowa. Memorials can be made to the Hospice or Alzheimer's Association.
Naurice B. Duncan
October 13, 1905 - April 11, 2001
Naurice B. Duncan, 95, of Colchester, formerly from Plymouth, died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, in his home.
He was born October 13, 1905, near Plymouth, the son of Birdie M. and Sarah Williams Duncan. On March 21, 1929, he married
Bernice Mickle, in Macomb. She died on April 1, 1985. He then married
Alice Smart Turner on September 12, 1986, in Moberly, Mo. She survives.
He is survived by one step-daughter, Mrs. Martyn (Marily) Wingo, of Colchester; one step-son, Floyd (Sherri) Cain, of Linn Creek, Mo.; 11 step-grandchildren and 22 step-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.
He retired from farming in 1986. He was a longtime member of the Scotts Church and most recently attended the Colchester Baptist Church. He loved music. He had played numerous instruments all of his life and in later years played with the Mt. Carmel Band and the Down Home Gospel Bluegrass Group.
Funeral services were held Monday, April 16 at Hamilton Funeral Home in Plymouth, with Rev. Ernest Louderman and Rev. Robert Knight officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's cemetery near Plymouth.
Memorials can be made to the Colchester Baptist Church or the MDH Hospice.
MELVIN MCCARTNEY
September 5, 1924 - July 12, 2001
Melvin L. McCartney, 76, Hamilton, died Thursday, July 12, 2001, at his home.
He was born September 5, 1924, in Lee County, Iowa, the son of Joseph W. and Anna Flora Alston McCartney. He married
Esther Higbee on August 24, 1957, in Keokuk, Iowa. She survives.
He is survived by his wife, Esther McCartney of Hamilton; one son, Richard (Kathy) Hanley of Mineral, Va.; two granddaughters, Mrs. Bill (Nancy) Washburn, and Mrs. Frank (Michelle) Powers, both of Reed City, Mich.; six great grandchildren; two cousins, Merle Avise of Hamilton, and Bud (Joyce) McCartney of Rockford.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
He lived in the Keokuk/Hamilton area for his entire life. He served as a sergeant in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He had been employed in production at Champion International in Keokuk for 42 years. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Keokuk, the American Legion Post #41 of Keokuk, and VFW Post #3508 of Keokuk.
Services were held July 17 at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with Rev. William Mitchell officiating. Burial was in Keokuk National cemetery with military rites.
Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church of Keokuk or to Hancock County Health Care.
DARLENE McGAW
Dec. 28, 1922 -- Nov. 29, 2001
Darlene McGaw, 78, Dallas City, died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at the Oak Lane Nursing and Rehab in Stronghurst, where she has resided for the past four years.
She was born Dec. 28, 1922, in Stronghurst, the daughter of Waldo and Maggie Starkey Johnson. On Oct. 10, 1940, she married
Wayne McGaw in Burlington, Iowa. He died on Dec. 24, 1975.
She is survived by one son, Jerry McGaw of Dallas City; four granddaughters, Kim Fuller of Aurora, Angie Robertson of Mapleton, Somer McGaw of Naperville, and Teri Jones of Keokuk, Iowa; four great great granddaughters, Leah and Kayla Jones and Mackenzie and Emmerson Fuller; one sister, Helen Ryan of Stronghurst; one brother, Charlie Johnson of San Benito, Texas.
She was a 1940 graduate of the Stronghurst High School. She and her husband farmed near Stronghurst and also operated a dairy. They moved to Dallas City in the late 1940s. She worked for Nate Hendricks in Dallas City and at Wingard Company in Burlington. She had most recently worked as a cashier at Jack's in Fort Madison.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 1, at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Rev. George Knox officiating. Burial was in the Harris cemetery near Dallas City. A memorial fund has been established.
ERMA MARSHALL BYRNES
Feb. 7, 1918 -- April 15, 2002
Erma Marshall Byrnes, 84, of Carthage died Monday, April 15, 2002, at Keokuk Area Hospital.
She was born on a farm 3 1/2 miles west of Carthage on Feb. 7, 1918, the third daughter of Ralph W. and Emma Vogel Marshall. On June 12, 1938, she married
John T. Byrnes in the Elvaston Presbyterian Church, only the second marriage in the church. He died in 1996.
She is survived by one daughter, Janet (Steve) Calhoun of Oswego, Ill.; one granddaughter, Christina K. Calhoun; one step-grandson, David (Beth) Calhoun, and children Kymberly and Stephen, all of Dunlap; one sister, Aleta Stump; several of nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John and one sister, Helen Dickerson.
She was baptized in infancy and joined the Elvaston Presbyterian Church at an early age. She attended grade school and four years of high school at Elvaston and had a lifetime scholarship at Gem City Business College in Quincy. She was active in the church, secretary of Sunday School, a teacher, member of the Ladies Missionary Society and church choir. She and her husband were in charge of Young People Christian Endeavor on Sunday evenings. They transferred their membership to Carthage Presbyterian Church when they moved to Carthage in 1969.
She was a mother, homemaker and was employed as a program assistant at the USDA-ASCS office. She retired after 29 years in January of 1981. She and her husband spent winter months in Tucson, Ariz., until his death.
Funeral services were held Friday, April 19, at Neiser-Printy Funeral Home in Carthage. Burial was in the Elvaston cemetery.

GLEN A. BEELER
Feb. 9, 1937 -- June 9, 2002
Glen A. Beeler, 65, a lifelong resident of Sutter, died Sunday, June 9, 2002, in the emergency room of Blessing Hospital in Quincy.
He was born Feb. 9, 1937, in Sutter, Walker Township, in the home where he spent most of his life, a son of Albert and Edna Wollbrink Beeler. On Feb. 6, 1965, in Canton, Mo., he married
June Hendrickson. She survives.
He is survived by his wife, June of Sutter; three daughters, Becky (Patrick) Beaird of Springfield, Sara Beeler of St. Louis, Mo., and Susan Beeler of Jefferson City, Mo.; one son, Todd (Teresa) Beeler of Sutter; four grandchildren, Megan and Austin Beeler and Alaina and Jacob Beaird; two sisters, Arlene Lantz of Carthage and Elma Seals of Arbela, Mo.; two brothers, Leo Beeler of Ursa and John Beeler of Bowen.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He was a graduate of Warsaw High School, and served in the U.S.. Army from November of 1956 to November of 1958. He was a member of the Bethany United Church of Christ in Tioga, where he served on the church board, cemetery board, and was Sunday school superintendent. He farmed the family farm in Sutter for over 40 years. He was a member of the Hancock County Board and was road commissioner for Walker Township.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 12, in Bethany United Church of Christ in Tioga, with Rev. Nancy Nyberg officiating. Burial was in the Bethany Church cemetery.
Memorials have been established for Bethany United Church of Christ in Tioga, or to the family.
LUCILLE TIEMANN
April 29, 1916 -- July 30, 2002
Lucille Tiemann, 86, Jefferson City, Mo., died July 30, 2002, at Villa Marie Skilled Nursing Facility. She was born April 29, 1916, in Kirksville, Mo., a daughter of Dr. James H. and Roxie Alvinia Conover Hess. She married
Albert Leo Tiemann on Nov. 7, 1937, in Kahoka, Mo. He died June 25, 1999.
She is survived by two daughters, Mavis (Tom) Jefferson of Carthage, and Sandra (Donn) Hastings of Jefferson City, Mo.; one son, Roger W. Tiemann of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two infant sons, Albert Tiemann, Jr. and Darrell Ray Tiemann.
She attended high school in Philadelphia. She was a homemaker and lived on a farm near Basco for 53 years. She worked at Motorola Company in Quincy, and at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Burlington, Iowa. She also was an independent insurance agent. She moved to Jefferson City in 1991 and also lived in the winter in Hollywood, Fla., for the past 20 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Basco, and attended Memorial Baptist Church in Jefferson City.
Services were held Friday, Aug. 2, at 6 p.m. at the Basco Methodist Church in Basco, with the Rev. Larry Menschel officiating. Burial was in the Basco South cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to Basco Community Center in Basco, the Special Learning Center in Jefferson City, or Memorial Baptist Church in Jefferson City.
WELDON K. SCHILDMAN
Nov. 15, 1910 -- Dec. 12, 2002
Weldon K. Schildman, 92, of Good Samaritan Home in Quincy, formerly of Hamilton and Sutter, died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy.
He was born on Nov. 15, 1910, in the Warsaw/Sutter area, the son of George and Fannie B. Quick Schildman. He married
Alberta M. Linnenburger on Oct. 29, 1935, at the First Christian Church of Hamilton. She died on May 12, 1995.
She is survived by two grandchildren, Jeri Linn Trenter of Sedalia, Mo., and Jarrod Richie of Quincy; five great grandchildren, Amberlyn Richie, Kimberlee Richie, Journey Richie, Nathan Trenter, and Nick Trenter.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and one daughter, Judith McKenzie.
He was a longtime member of First Christian Church of Hamilton, and later joined the First Christian Church in Quincy. He worked as a machinist at Knapheide Manufacturing Company in Quincy. He enjoyed gardening and watching Nascar and go-cart racing. He owned a shop and enjoyed "tinkering" and working on machinery. He volunteered his time to Meals-On-Wheels in Quincy.
Services were held Monday, Dec. 16 at Lamporte Funeral Home of Hamilton. Rev. Joby Brown officiated. Burial followed in Oakwood cemetery in Hamilton.
