RUTH "DOROTHY" FRAZEE
May 20, 1905 - Feb. 2, 2002
Ruth "Dorothy" Frazee, 96, a life long resident of Carthage, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, in the Hancock County Nursing Home in Carthage.
She was born May 20, 1905, in Plymouth, a daughter of Lawrence and Sarah Shinkle Frazee. In 1917 the family moved to 112 N. Scofield St. in Carthage, where she lived until Sept. 21, 2001.
She is survived by eight cousins, William Shinkle, Mary Chris Shinkle, Esther Vest, Gary (Carol) Vest, Evalee (Norman) Hare, Richard (Marlene) Souder, Francis Winters and Janet (Kent) Hoyt.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Catherine and Virginia.
She received a degree in music from Carthage College in 1928, and taught music for one year in Stronghurst. In 1930, she became an assistant to librarian, Eva Swain at the Carthage Library. Then in 1939, she became the librarian upon the retirement of Miss Swain. After 33 years of service, she retired in 1972. In 1973, she became the director of the Library Board, serving in that capacity until 1982. She was well known for her many reading programs and children story hours. Carthage citizens owe Dorothy a great debt of gratitude.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Carthage, where she taught Sunday school for many years, sang in the choir, and was a member of the Missionary Society. She was also a soloist in the area for many years, singing for a great number of funerals. She was also a member of the Carthage Woman's Club, D.A.R., P.E.O. Chapter J., A.A.U.W., and the Hancock County Historical Society.
Funeral services were held today (Wednesday) at 10:30 a.m. in the Lamporte Funeral Home in Carthage, with Rev. Jonathon Heikes and Rev. James Fox officiating. Burial was in the Harmony Township cemetery near Bentley.
Memorials in the name of Ruth Dorothy Frazee have been established for the Carthage Public Library or Hancock Blessing Hospice.
DOROTHY C. SCHNEIDER
Aug. 4, 1910 -- June 6, 2002
Dorothy Carlisle Schneider, 91, a longtime resident of Hamilton, died Thursday, June 6, 2002, at Memorial Hospital in Carthage,
She was born on Aug. 4, 1910, in Ferris, the daughter of Frank and Celia Sherman Carlisle. She married
Myron Schneider on April 20, 1935, at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Burlington.
She is survived by one son, Robert Schneider of Hamilton; three grandsons, Edwin Schneider of Hamilton, William (Michele) Schneider of Macomb, and David Schneider of Washington, D.C.; one great grandson, Ian Schneider of Macomb.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and one daughter-in-law, Irene Ruth Schneider.
She graduated from Carthage High School in 1928 and attended Illinois Wesleyan College in Bloomington.
She was a member of First Christian Church of Hamilton, and a member of King's Daughters. She had been a member of Pocahontas Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, for 73 years, serving as a Worthy Matron. She was also a member of White Shrine and was a Past Worthy High Priestess. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Hamilton and was a Charter Member of the Hancock County Cancer Society, and the Montebello Floral Society.
Services were held Monday, June 10, at the Lamporte Funeral Home at Hamilton with the Rev. Phoebe Blankenship officiating. Burial was in the Oakwood cemetery in Hamilton.
An Order of Eastern Star service was held by Pocahontas Chapter #49 of Hamilton, at the Lamporte Funeral Home prior to the memoral service.
Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church of Hamilton or to Pocahontas Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star of Hamilton.
MARIE A. KOENIG
Oct. 21, 1916 -- Aug. 7, 2002
Marie A. Koenig, 85, of Fort Madison, died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002, at the Fort Madison Health Care Center.
She was born Oct. 21, 1916, in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of John and Marie C. Reiser Koenig.
She is survived by one brother, Francis Koenig of Nauvoo; six nieces and nephews, Ann Farmer of Howell, Mich., Douglas Koenig of St. Cloud, Fla., Margaret L. Donovan of Springfield, Mo., Dennis Koenig of Mapleton, Sharon Tadlock of Mossville, and Julie Koenig of Peoria Heights; six great-nieces and nephews; and two great great-nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
She had lived in Pekin for most of her life, moving to Nauvoo in 1988. She graduated from Pekin High School. She received her training as a registered nurse at St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria. She worked in the nursing field in Pekin and Peoria. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church of Pekin, and Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Fort Madison.
Mass of Christian burial was Monday, Aug. 12, at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church of Nauvoo, with Father Greg Ketcham officiating. Burial was held at Saints Peter & Paul cemetery in Nauvoo.
A memorial has been established for Saints Peter & Paul School.
WILBUR E. LAUNER
Oct. 1, 1917 -- Dec. 15, 2002
Wilbur E. "Bill" Launer, 85, a longtime resident of West Point, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, in Memorial Hospital, Carthage.
He was born Oct. 1, 1917, near Basco, a son of Harry and Hattie Gavillet Launer. On April 1, 1939, he married
Lucille Josephine Jones in Keokuk. She died June 16, 1986.
He is survived by two daughters, Darlene Kay Adcox of West Point, and Marlene Launer of Quincy; three sons, Rudy Launer of West Point, Bill (Betty) Launer of Quincy, and John (Marguerite) Launer of Severance, Colo.; four grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one sister, Wilma Shay; and four brothers, Homer, Don, Russell and Rodney.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of W.W. II. In 1947 he moved to West Point, where he ran a repair garage and drove a school bus for the West Point and Southeastern school districts for 39 years. He was a member of the Bowen American Legion. He enjoyed woodworking, horses, his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Lamporte Funeral Home in Carthage after 3 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 19, and meet with the family from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday evening, Dec. 18.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 20, in the Lamporte Funeral Home in Carthage with Rev. Oliver Tanbe officiating. Burial will be in the West Point cemetery at West Point, with a flag presentation by the Bowen American Legion.
Memorials in the name of Wilbur "Bill" Launer may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
MARJORIE EVANS
Nov. 27, 1923 -- Feb. 16, 2003
Marjorie Evans, 79, Pontiac, formerly of Colchester, died of natural causes Sunday, Feb. 16, 2003.
She was born Nov. 27, 1923, in Burnside, the daughter of Roy and Tressie Woodside Sears. She married
Delbert Evans on June 3, 1941, in Kahoka, Mo.
She is survived by one son, Lee (Jean) Evans of Pontiac; five grandchildren, Chad (Janet) Evans, Crystal (Jim) Stadel, Champ (Michelle) Evans, Scott Harrington, and Troy (Sue) Harrington; six great-grandchildren, Hannah, Victoria and Ryan Evans, Nicholas, Lucas and Jeremiah Harrington; three brothers, Clinton (Elenore) Sears of LaHarpe, Harold "Shorty" (Jill) Sears, East Peoria, and Larry Sears of Macomb.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
She was a homemaker. She graduated from Colusa High School in 1941 as the valedictorian of her class. She enjoyed gardening and raising rose bushes. She enjoyed being with friends and going to new restaurants. She was famous for her oatmeal cookies. She was a member of the Jolly Housekeepers Club.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. today, Wednesday, Feb. 19, at Pilot Grove cemetery. Rev. Sondra Newman officiated.
Memorials may be made to O.S.F. Hospice 301 W. Washington St., Pontiac.
WILLIAM L. DAVIS
Sept. 18, 1922 -- April 9, 2003
William L. "Bill" Davis, 80 of Dallas City died Wednesday, April 9, 2003, in the Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab Center in Stronghurst.
He was born Sept. 18, 1922, in Smithshire, the son of Harry and Anna Johansen Davis. He married
Mary Malcome in 1945 in Media. They were divorced. On July 11, 1970, he married
Marlene Porter in Macomb.
He is survived by his wife, Marlene; five daughters, Julaine (Jim) Krarup of Mission Viejo, Calif., Laurie (Tim) Krebill of Donnellson, Iowa, Christine (Glen) Guy of Santa Cruz, Calif., Kelley Stevens of Keene, N.H., and Connie (Steve) Engberg of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; one son, Kerry (Cheri) Stevens of Dallas City; 12 grandchildren; one great grandchild; two sisters, Ruby Davis of Murphysboro, and Betty Jean (John) Kloster of Milan; two brothers, Kenneth "Jake" (Gertrude) Davis of Smithshire, and Otto "Pug" (Betty) Davis of Ouray, Colo., and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and one daughter, Lorraine Lynn Williams.
He was a graduate of Corona High School, Calif., and had attended UCLA in Los Angeles, Calif. He then graduated from Gem City Business College in Quincy with a degree in business and accounting. He was manager of the Dallas City Grain Elevator in Dallas City for 47 years, retiring in 1988. He was a former member of the Illinois Grain Buyers Association, the Chicago Board of Trade, and was a member of the First Christian Church of Dallas City. He loved fishing, camping, and his grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 12, in the Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City. Rev. Doug Clark officiated. Burial followed in the Harris cemetery in Dallas City.
A memorial fund has been established for the First Christian Church of Dallas City.
EDWARD W. RADEL
Sept. 13, 1917 -- May 22, 2003
Edward W. Radel, 85, of rural Nauvoo, died Thursday, May, 22, 2003, in his home.
He was born Sept. 13, 1917, in Nauvoo, the son of Roy E. and Valeria Krueger Radel. He married
Lilah Ruth Carlisle on Oct. 31, 1942, in Nauvoo.
He is survived by his wife, Lilah Ruth Radel of Nauvoo; two daughters, Pegi (Bill) Langan of Davenport, Iowa, and Pat (Chuck) Bradbury of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.; one son, Charles (Gerry) Radel of Quincy; one daughter-in-law, Lenore Radel of Niota; 11 grandchildren, Thomas "Ted" Radel, Patricia Radel, Rebecca Radel, Dennis Radel, Bryant Langan, Justin Langan, Kevin Langan, Jennifer Zvolensky, Tara Bradbury, Jon Bradbury and Ben Bradbury; two great grandchildren, Edward J. Radel and Aubree Langan.
He was preceded in death by one son, David Radel; one sister, Marjory Peck; and two brothers, Max Radel and James Radel.
He received his education from Sts. Peter and Paul School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving from 1941 to 1945. He was discharged as staff sergeant after serving in five theaters of operation, including Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He earned several commendations, including the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, with one silver Battle Star.
He and his wife celebrated over 60 years of marriage. They enjoyed 25 years of traveling with their travel trailer, and visited 47 states, including Alaska.
He was highly respected and admired for his farming practices and skills. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Nauvoo. He was a member of the Farm Bureau.
Mass of Christian burial was held Tuesday, May 27, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Nauvoo. Celebrant Fr. Greg Ketcham officiated.
Memorials have been established for Sts. Peter and Paul Church and Sts. Peter and Paul School.

ESTHER D. GRAY
April 15, 1911 -- July 21, 2003
Esther D. VanAusdall Gray, 92, of Hamilton died Monday, July 21, 2003, at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa.
She was born April 15, 1911, in Keokuk, the daughter of Luman and Ellen Atterberg Van-Ausdall. She married
James L. Gray on Feb. 2, 1933, in Jerseyville.
She is survived by one son, Dr. James Van Gray of Rocklin, Calif.; one sister, Virginia "Tootie" (Gene) Swagel of Phoeniz, Ariz.; three brothers, Lloyd (Lucille) VanAusdall of Keokuk, Pete (Ann) VanAusdall of Hamilton, and Jack VanAusdall of Salem; three sisters-in-law, Gayle VanAusdall of Keokuk, Mabel Lee VanAusdall of Warsaw, and Emma VanAusdall of Quincy; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and four brothers, Kenneth, Arnold, Junior and Max.
She and her husband lived on a farm in rural Hamilton for 57 years. She attended Hamilton High School. She had been a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church since Dec. 25, 1932. She was a member of Bethel Ladies' Aid and had served as a deacon for the church. She was a member of Pocahontas Chapter #49 Order of the Eastern Star. She was a member of Wythe Township Social Circle and a member of Ralph Parker Post #682 American Legion Auxiliary in Warsaw. She had many hobbies, including her father's harness racing horses, collecting dolls, knitting, gardening and antiquing. Her most important interest had been her husband and son. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 23, after 2 p.m. with the family meeting friends between 6 and 8 p.m. at Lamporte Funeral Home of Hamilton.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 24, at Bethel Presbyterian Church in Hamilton with Bob Wagner officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood cemetery in Hamilton.
Memorials have been established for Bethel Presbyterian Church in Hamilton.
NORMA E. JENNINGS
Aug. 1, 1945 -- July 27, 2003
Norma E. Jennings, 57, of Moline died Sunday, July 27, 2003, after a car accident.
She was born Aug. 1, 1945, in Moline, the daughter of Alva and Hattie Goodrich Pyles. She married
Sherman Jennings on Dec. 31, 1967, in East Moline. He survives.
She is survived locally by her brother, Phillip Pyles of Warsaw.
Services were held at the Schroder Mortuary in Silvis. Burial was in Dayton Corners, Colona.
Lowell Reeves
September 23, 1923 - September 7, 2000
Lowell E. Reeves, 76, of Augusta, died at 6:20 a.m., Thursday, September 7, 2000, in his home. He was born September 23, 1923, near Plymouth. He was the son of Clyde and Alta (Sherman) Reeves. On March 4, 1950, in Colchester, he married
Joan Rexroat. She survives.
He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. John (Sherry) Huston of Carthage and Cindy Reeves of Keokuk, Iowa; a son-in-law, Michael Juneman of Good Hope; one sister, Norma Logan of Hemet, CA; three brothers, Roger Reeves of Mesa, AZ, Bob and Dick Reeves of Tennessee, IL; three grandchildren, Heather Juneman of Chicago, Isaac Juneman of Macomb, Lowell Reeves and Samuel Huston of Carthage; and three step-grandchildren, Chris Huston of Indianapolis, Jennifer VanHorn of San Diego and Zak Huston of Herscher, Ill.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Debra Juneman and a son, Gary Reeves.
He was a retired farmer, a member of Augusta VFW Post #9029 and Plymouth American Legion Post #912. He was a WW II Army Veteran serving in France, Belgium and Germany.
Services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday September 10, 2000, in the Hamilton Funeral Home in Augusta, with Reverend Kathleen Hughes officiating. Burial with Military Rites was in St. Mary's cemetery near Plymouth.
