ALFRED EICHHORN
October 17, 1923 - February 4, 2001
Alfred "Ike" F. Eichhorn, 77, of Carthage died Sunday, February 4, 2001 at the Montebello Manor in Hamilton of natural causes. He was born October 17, 1923 the son of Adam and Elise (Voight) Eichhorn near West Point, Ill. On February 5, 1944 he was united in marriage to Lois Akers in Oshkosh, Wisc. She survives.
He is survived by his wife Lois of Carthage; two daughters, Mrs. John (Nancy) Ferguson of Niota, and Mrs. Bill (Lori) Crose of Rochester Hills, Mich.; one sister, Helen Neill of Lakeland, Fla; one brother, Wilbur Eichhorn of Augusta; five grandchildren, Jeff (Vicky) Ferguson of Niota, Mrs. Mike (Jennifer) Boddeker of Nauvoo, Jessica Ferguson of Niota, and Nicholas and Libby Crose of Rochester Hills; four great-grandchildren, Ryan and Megan Boddeker of Nauvoo, and Jeremy and Jonathan Ferguson of Niota; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He graduated from Bowen High School in 1941. He then served in the United States Army during World War II in the 255th Medic Corps in Europe.
He worked in Carthage for Robnett Implement, later Robnett-Jurgens International Harvester from 1945 until 1988. He then worked for the City of Carthage until 1998.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday (today) February 7, 2001, at Neiser-Printy Funeral Home in Carthage with burial following in Moss Ridge cemetery in Carthage with full military rites.
A memorial has been established.
DOROTHY BOLLIN
OCTOBER 27, 1913 - FEBRUARY 7, 2001
Dorothy Veronica Bollin, 87, a longtime resident of Nauvoo, died Wednesday, February 7, 2001, at Keokuk Area Hospital. She was born on October 27, 1913, the daughter of George and Valeria Wellner Wilkens. On January 1, 1937, she married
Clarence Earl Bollin at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Carthage. He preceded her in death in December of 1940. On May 4, 1943, she married
Ralph Dort Bollin at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Nauvoo.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Jim (Martha Regina) Goetz of Elk Grove Village, Ill., and Mrs. Jim (Doris Juanita) Duvendack of Mt. Sterling, Ill.; two sons, Clarence Craig (Cathy) Bollin of Independence, Mo., and Calvin Ralph Bollin of Nauvoo; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marie Bolton of Rock Island, and Mrs. Albert Loyola Hutson of Nauvoo.
She was preceded in death by her husbands and her parents.
She graduated from Sts. Peter and Paul School in Nauvoo in 1931, and attended Gem City College in Quincy. She was a member of Sonora Household Science Club and the Nauvoo Senior Citizens. She was also a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church of Nauvoo and a member of the Catholic Ladies' Club. She was a dedicated wife and mother.
Services were held Saturday, February 10, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, with Father Greg Ketcham as Celebrant.
Memorials can be made to Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.
WILLIAM METTERNICH
August 31, 1925 - April 13, 2001
William Joseph "Joe" Metternich, 75, a lifetime resident of Nauvoo, died Friday, April 13, 2001, at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa.
He was born on August 31, 1925, in Nauvoo, the son of William Peter and Neva Hester Brown Metternich. On May 4, 1962, he married
Bonnie L. Lutz Metternich. She survives in Nauvoo.
Also surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Donna (Roger) Kirkhart, Cantril, Iowa, Mrs. Lou Ann (Tony) Murphy, Osage, Iowa, Mrs. Sara (Paul) Mankiewiez, San Diego, Calif.; two sons, William Alan (Julie) Metternich, and David Jon (Lou Ann) Metternich; two brothers, Jack (Donna) Metternich, Dale (Vivian) Metternich; four sisters, Mrs. Kathy (Carl) Rose, Jane Kelley, both of Nauvoo, Ulah Ebert, Stronghurst, and June Geissler, Carthage; seven granchildren, Brenda Metternich, Jill Metternich, and Mike Metternich of Nauvoo, Mandi Kirkhart and Joe Kirkhart, Cantril, Iowa, Jeremy Metternich, Carbondale, and Craig Metternich, Macomb.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother.
He and his family farmed at rural Nauvoo for many years. He drove a school bus for the Nauvoo/Colusa school system. He was Sonora Township Clerk for 28 years. He liked to grow produce and sell it at the Farmer's Market. He enjoyed fishing, deer hunting, coon hunting. He especially enjoyed taking his grandchildren to the river. He made many wooden toys, including doll houses, barns, and machine sheds. He was a member of the Nauvoo Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder and a trustee. He was a veteran of the U.S. military, serving from May 1945 to November 1946.
Services were held on Monday, April 16, at Lamporte Funeral Home of Nauvoo with Pastor Mark Lowman and Pastor Mary Boyer officiating. Burial was in Nauvoo City cemetery in Nauvoo. A full military service was held at the graveside.
Memorials are established for the Nauvoo Presbyterian Church.
MELVIN H. HALL
October 25, 1914 - July 16, 2001
Melvin H. Hall, 86, of Ft. Madison, died Monday, July 16, 2001, at his home.
He was born October 25, 1914, at Hills, Iowa. He was the second of seven children born to Warren A. and Lavina K. Deatsch Hall. On June 14, 1938, at St. Marys Catholic Church in Ft. Madison, he married
Mary Cecelia Holtkamp. She died on February 7, 1964.
He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Jerry (Carol A.) Fedler of West Point and Mrs. Bill (Mary Jo) Gavillet of Carthage; five sons, Dale M. Hall, Don F. (Donna) Hall, Bill (Dolores) Hall, Gene (Judy) Hall, all of Ft. Madison, and Jim D. Hall of Burlington; 14 grandchildren; three step grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren, and 4 step great grandchildren; one sister, Celeste Thinker of Ft. Madison; three brothers, Cleo A. Hall of Phoenix, Ariz., Harley H. Hall of Oak Harbor, Wash., and Lloyd J. Hall of Granada Hills, Calif.; four sisters-in-law, Nellie Noll, Agnes Holtkamp, Martha Holtkamp, and Arlene Cale.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one sister; one brother; three sisters-in-law, and five brothers-in-law.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Church, the Sacred Heart Church choir, The Holy Name Society, and the Knights of Columbus. He donated his RH negative blood to the former Sacred Heart Hospital. He helped with Troop #7 Boy Scouts of America, Explorer Scouts and Sea Scouts, and later served as a councilman with them. He was a member of the Issac Walton Club, Iowa State Coon Hunters, Lee County Coyote Hunters, National Rifle Association, and the National Trappers Association. He was a commercial fisherman, an avid coon hunter, and outdoorsman.
He worked for Walter A. Sheaffer as his groundskeeper. Later during World War II he worked as a maintenance/ plumber-pipefitter at Sheaffer Pen retiring in 1974.
Friends may call after 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the King-Lynk Funeral Home in Ft. Madison. The rosary will be recited at 3 p.m. There will be a wake service at 7:30 p.m. with the family meeting friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. tonight.
Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, July 19, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ft. Madison with Rev. Tim Sheedy as celebrant and Rev. Charles Gannon as con-celebrant. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart cemetery in Ft. Madison.
Memorials may be made to the Ft. Madison Catholic School System. Contributions may be left at the King-Lynk Funeral Home.
BARBARA HEISLER
Feb. 12, 1949 -- Nov. 30, 2001
Barbara Robinson Heisler, 52, of Rock Hill, S.C., died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at her home.
She was born Feb. 12, 1949, in Rock Hill, a daughter of Robert and Lola Mae Polk Robinson.
She is survived by her husband, Ronald E. Heisler, Sr.; two sons, Ronald E. Heisler, Jr., and Roy S. Heisler, both of Rock Hill; two brothers, James Robinson of Baytown, Texas, and Jerry Robinson of Rock Hill.
Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 3, at the Cauthen Funeral Home, Rock Hill Chapel, with Rev. Steve Roberts and Rev. Jerry Devinney officiating. Burial with military honors was in the Ebenezer ARP Church cemetery.
The family request that memorial gifts be made to Oakdale Baptist Church, 1249 Oakdale Road, Rock Hill, S.C. 29730.
EDITH MARIE CROW POND
Aug. 25, 1916 -- Feb. 17, 2002
Edith Marie Crow Pond, 85, of Carthage and formerly of South Holland in Chicago, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, in the Hancock County Nursing Home in Carthage.
She was born on Aug. 25, 1916, in Chicago, a daughter of Grover and Hilda Johnson Crow. On Aug. 12, 1939, in Chicago she married
to Edwin Pond, who survives in the Hancock County Nursing Home.
She is survived by her husband, Edwin of Carthage; two daughter, Susan (Rodney) Rothert of Basco, and Carolyn (Ronald) Thompson of Rockwall, Texas; five grandchildren; three great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Esther; one brother, Clarence.
She was a member of the Sutter Salem Bible Church in Sutter.
Cremation rites have been accorded. Memorial funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 19, in the Sutter Salem Bible Church in Sutter, with Rev. Shawn Dejong officiating.
Memorials in the name of Edith M. Pond have been established for the Hancock County Young Life and may be dropped off or mailed to Lamporte Funeral Home, 405 Cherry St., Carthage, who is in charge of the arrangements.
DR. ARTHUR M. ORUM
Dr. Arthur M. Orum, 84, of Sun City West, Ariz., a former well-known Carthage veterinarian, died Sunday, April 21, 2002, in Arizona.
Arrangements will be announced by the Lamporte Funeral Home in Carthage.
STANLEY W. LITTLE
June 12, 1914 -- Aug. 10, 2002
Stanley W. Little, 88, LaHarpe, died Saturday Aug. 10, 2002, at the LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center, LaHarpe.
He was born on June 12, 1914, in Fort Madison, Iowa, the son of Guy L. and Mary Hutson Little. On June 26, 1937, he married
Frances K. Krause in LaHarpe. She died May 1, 1996.
He is survived by one daughter, Karen Satterlee of Las Vegas; one son, Rodney Little of Eucha, Okla.; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two sisters, Darlene Comstock of Hamilton, and Martha Jean Cratsenberg of LaHarpe; one brother, Lldon of LaHarpe; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife; four brothers, Wayne, Richard, Robert and George Little, and his parents.
He was a licensed plumber and co-owned and operated Little Brothers Hardware store in LaHarpe with his brothers, Robert and Lldon. In later years the business became known as Little Brothers Plumbing, Heating and Electrical. He was a licensed private pilot and loved to fly. He was a member of the LaHarpe Masonic Lodge #195 and the LaHarpe United Methodist Church.
Graveside services were held Tuesday, Aug. 13, at the LaHarpe cemetery with Rev. Bruce Goettsche officiating.
A memorial fund has been established for the LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center.
CHARLES S. SETTLES
Jan 1, 1964 -- Dec. 15, 2002
Charles S. "Chuck" Settles, 38, of Ferris, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, in the emergency room of Memorial Hospital, Carthage.
He was born Jan. 1, 1964, in Macomb, the son of Conrad and Jean Franks Settles. He was married
to Nancy Trone, she survives.
He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Jean and Bill Twitchell of Ferris; one daughter, Mandy (Bill) Frakes of Carthage; one son, Shawn Settles of Carthage; one sister, Shelly Settles of Plymouth; aunts, uncles, nephews, cousins; one step-sister, Lucinda K. Rogers of Houston, Texas; and one step-brother, Edward J. Twitchell of Florida.
He was preceded in death by his father, Conrad Settles; his maternal grandparents, Elmer and Hazel Franks; paternal grandparents, Charles and Helen Settles; one infant brother, Torry Lee; one infant nephew; and one step-sister, Lori M. Kelly.
He was a graduate of Carthage High School. He had been employed at Methode in Carthage, and was a full time student at Vatterott College in Quincy.
Friends may call at the Lamporte Funeral Home in Carthage after 2 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 18, and meet with the family from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday evening.
Funerals services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 19, in the Lamporte Funeral Home in Carthage, with Rev. Greg Busboom officiating. Burial is in Oakwood cemetery in Macomb.
Memorials have been established for a charity that will be decided later by the family.
GLADYS M. BLOYD
Sept. 10, 1913 -- April 14, 2003
Gladys M. Shepherd Bloyd, 89, died April 14, 2003, in the Clark County Nursing Home in Kahoka, Mo.
She was born Sept. 10, 1913, in Warsaw, the daughter of Frank and Mary Sherrill. She married
Lloyd S. Shepherd on Feb. 20, 1932. He died July 15, 1989. She married
Ralph Bloyd on Nov. 25, 1989. He died Jan. 17, 1992.
She is survived by one daughter, Barbara (Del) Curtis, Kahoka, Mo.; four sons, Lawrence Sherrill of Keokuk, Iowa, Robert Shepherd of Fairfield, Calif., Burton Shepherd of Dwight, Kan., and Leroy Shepherd of Keokuk; 21 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, four children, three sisters, and one brother.
She was a charter member of the Warsaw Assembly of God Church and was a faithful and devoted member.
Visitation will be on Thursday, April 17, after 3 p.m. at the Lamporte Funeral Home of Warsaw. The family will meet with friends from 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 18, at the Lamporte Funeral Home in Warsaw with Rev. Charles Hadsell officiating. Burial will be in the Oakland cemetery in Warsaw.
Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
