Fredrick St. Ores
November 2, 1918 - September 7, 2000

Fredrick R. St. Ores, age 81, of Dallas City, died Thursday, September 7, 2000, at 12:40 p.m. at the McDonough District Hospital in Macomb.

He was born November 2, 1918, in Dallas City, the son of Walter and Sara Boggess St. Ores. On december 12, 1941, he married Dorothy Hardisty in Kahoka Missouri.

He is survived by his wife; one daughter, Pat Briscoe of Carthage; one son, Stan St. Ores of Colusa; 9 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Carl St. Ores of Fort Madison.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He was a 1936 graduate of Dallas City High School and served in the Army Air Corps during Word War II. He had worked at the Winegard Company in Burlington for 15 years, and then worked at J.I. Case Company in Burlington for 12 years, retiring in 1981. He was a member of the Pontoosuc Community Church, the Dallas City American Legion and the Dallas City Senior Citizens. He was a former member of the Moose Lodge in Fort Madison and the Eagles in Burlington.

Funeral services were held Sunday, September 9, 2000 at Banks and Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with reverend Lee Unger officiating. Burial, with Military Rites, was in the Harris cemetery near Dallas City.

A memorial has been established for the pontoosuc Community Church or the Dallas City Senior Citizens.

ANNA MAE JOHNSON
July 28, 1912 -- July 16, 2003

Anna Mae Johnson, 90, a lifelong Carthage area resident died Wednesday, July 16, 2003, in her home.

She was born July 28, 1912, in Harmony Township, Hancock County, a daughter of Louis Anderson "Ad" and Martha A. "Matt" Botkin Sowder. On Aug. 24, 1937, in the Denver Christian Church in Denver, she married Albert A. Johnson. He died Dec. 30, 1994.

She is survived by two daughters, Bonnie (Harry) Classen of Fond du Lac, Wis., and Martha (Michael) Detlefsen of Granger, Ind.; one son, Warren (Kim) Johnson of Carthage; eight grandchildren, Susan (Peter) Classen Frey, John Classen, Hans (Emily) Detlefsen, Anna Detlefsen and her fiance, Eric von Deck, Sara Detlefsen, Seth Johnson, Erin Johnson, and Kathryn Huber-Johnson; two step grandchildren, Kelly (Josh) Hamm and Kortney Freeman; one great-grandchild, Zachary Frey; four special friends, Karol Hanson, Linda Kirbach, Chad Grainger and Andrea Grainger Newport.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Albert; one son, Albert Andrew Johnson; one sister, Susie Sowder; two brothers, Joe Wesley Sowder and John M. Sowder.

She grew up in rural Carthage. She attended Mt. Pleasant Grade School, and went to Denver and Bowen high schools, graduating from Bowen High School in 1929. She went to Carthage College for one year in 1929 and 1930. She taught school from 1930 to 1937. She was a member of the Mt. Pleasant Christian Church. She was a pianist, playing for the Mt. Pleasant Church for many years. She was a 4-H leader, F.H.A. Advisor, and a volunteer at Carthage Memorial Hospital and the Roseville Nursing Home. She and her husband were charter members of the Memorial Hospital Association. She loved playing bridge and belonged to several bridge groups.

Friends may call at the Lamporte Funeral Home in Carthage after 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 23, and meet with the family from 6 to 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 24, in the Mt. Pleasant Christian Church, east of Bentley, with pastors Matt Haberman and Lynn Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the Moss Ridge cemetery in Carthage.

Memorials have been established for Mt. Pleasant Christian Church or Hancock Blessing Hospice.

JAMES J. FIFE
April 19, 1927 -- Aug. 6, 2003

James J. Fife, 76, of Carthage, died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2003, at Memorial Hospital in Carthage.

He was born April 19, 1927, in Fountain Green Township, Hancock County, the son of James O. and Laura Dorothy Fife. On June 25, 1950, he married Luetta Berlett in LaHarpe.

He is survived by his wife; one daughter, Pamela Fife; and one son, Michael Fife, all of Carthage.

He was preceded in death by one sister, LaVerne Dunn and his parents.

Mr. Fife was a graduate of LaHarpe High School and attended Western Illinois University. He served in the US Navy during World War II. He farmed all of his life near Fountain Green, moving to Carthage in 1998. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Blandinsville and the American Legion Post 424, also of Blandinsville. He enjoyed NASCAR racing, playing pool and bowling.

Graveside services were held Saturday, Aug. 9, at the LaHarpe cemetery with Rev. Lee Unger officiating. A flag presentation was performed by the Blandinsville American Legion Post 424.

A memorial fund has been established for the First Christian Church, Blandinsville.

REV. WILLIAM UFKES
February 18, 1919 - January 18, 2001

The Rev. William G. Ufkes, a resident of Mendota Lutheran Home died January 18, 2001, in the nursing home. He was born February 18, 1919 in Carthage to Gerhard and Anna (Huls) Ufkes. He was married to Marjorie Truckenbrod on June 20, 1943 in Mendota.

He is survived by his wife of Peru; one daughter, Mrs. Scott (Ruth) Hughes of Woodridge, Ill.; one son, Rev. David (Linda) Ufkes of Marseilles, Ill.; two sisters, Hilda Eilers of Golden, and Tena LaBonde of Logan, Utah; two brothers, Albertus of Golden and Marvin of Quincy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and one brother.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Peru. He graduated from Carthage College in 1940 and Wartburg Theological Seminary in 1943. He was ordained in New Douglas and Michigan City, Indiana, and Chenoa and Ohio, Ill. before retiring. He was also chaplain for Mendota Lutheran Home for three years.

Services were held in the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Golden, with the Rev. Phillip Tobin officiating. Burial was in Memorial Garden cemetery, Golden.

MARION SWARTZ
July 6, 1918 - February 8, 2001

Marion R. Swartz, 82, of Carthage, died February 8, 2001, at her home in Carthage. She was born July 6, 1918 the daughter of James and Ruth (Frary) Kennedy in Lee County, Iowa, near Donnelson. On May 30, 1941, she married Richard Roland Swartz in Keokuk. He preceded her in death on December 31, 1990.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Gerald (Patricia Ann) Jones of Carthage; two sons, Daniel Lester Swartz of Kansas City, MO, and Richard Roland (Ena) Swartz of Carthage; one daughter-in law, Becky Swartz of Dublin, Ohio; seven grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and one sister in law.

She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Jim; two brothers; and one sister.

She attended Keokuk schools and graduated from Keokuk High School. She attended Culver Stockton College and Western Illinois University.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Carthage; the Carthage V.F.W. Auxiliary Post #5117; D.A.R. Chapter Shadrack Bond; Carthage Womens Club and was active in the Carthage Senior Center.

Services were held Sunday, February 11, at the First Presbyterian Church in Carthage with burial in the Hickory Grove cemetery in Keokuk.

Memorials can be made to the Carthage Senior Center.

THELMA CARNES
June 1, 1910 - April 6, 2001

Thelma I. Carnes, 90, Carthage, formerly of Augusta, died Friday, April 6, 2001, in the home of her daughter.

She was born June, 1, 1910, in Huntsville, the daughter of Samuel and Dora (Harris) Jackson. In October of 1928 she married Lloyd Carnes. He died July 23, 1986.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Bill (Carolyne) Griffiths, Carthage; one son, Lloyd J. (Maryann) Carnes, Springfield; one brother, Heber Jackson, Winslow, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Imogene Green.

She owned and operated Carnes Drive-In in Augusta for many years. She was a member of the Bowen Christian Church. She was also a member of the Browning Chapter #262 Order of Eastern Star.

Funeral services were held Sunday, April 8, in the Hamilton Funeral Home in Augusta, with the Rev. Tom Mehaffy officiating. Burial was in the Woodlawn cemetery in Augusta.

Memorials may be made to the Bowen Christian Church Building Fund or the Blessing Hospice of Hancock County.

GUY M. DOUGLAS
August 1, 1918 - July 12, 2001

Guy M. Douglas, 82, died of pancreatic cancer on Thursday, July 12, 2001, in his home west of Plymouth.

He was born August 1, 1918, near Plymouth to Harry Clifton and Jennie Lea (Huddleston) Douglas. On September 13, 1938, he married Dorothy Lee Davis of rural Plymouth. They were parents of Ronald Keith and Sharon Sue. He later married Marge Nooner Bell and Mary Lois Langlinais.

He is survived by one sister, Edith Winters of Plymouth; one daughter, Mrs. Richard (Sharon) Chockley of Stronghurst; one son, Ron (Paula) of Peoria; six grandchildren; one step-daughter, Carolyn Fehrenkamp; one step-grandson, and nine great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Jean Douglas Powell and Doris Douglas Drake; four brothers, Willis, Grant, Harry Jr. (Jake), and John; spouses, Dorothy Lee and Mary Lois.

He completed Plymouth High School where he excelled in the 50 yard dash and the broad jump, holding the regional records for many years. He was known and respected throughout the general area. He painted and was a paper hanger for 53 years, including 18 years in Tucson, Ariz. He quit working in February of 2001 due to health problems. He was lovingly cared for by his special companion, Eula Rowland.

Cremation rites have been accorded.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Blessing Hospice at 71 S. Adams St., Carthage, IL 62321.

The Hamilton Funeral Home in Plymouth is in charge of the arrangements.

PHYLLIS M. COLLINGWOOD
May 9, 1929 -- Nov. 26, 2001

Phyllis M. Collingwood, 72, of Center Point, Iowa, died Monday, Nov. 26, 2001, at St. Luke's Hospital, Ceder Rapids, Iowa, following complications due to leukemia.

She was born May 9, 1929, the daughter of Gaylord and Clara (Neally) Ellefritz in Carthage. On Jan. 21, 1960, she married Arlo Collingwood in Williamsburg, Iowa.

She is survived by her husband, Arlo; two daughters, Debbie (Mike) Luke of Ceder Rapids and Kathy (Rick) Hoxworth of Center Point; her step-children, Barbara Robinson and significant other Richard Rubey of Pine River, Minn., Arlis (Laren) Frye of Norwalk, Iowa., Donald (Lisa) Collingwood and Charles (Melinda) Collingwood, all of Center Point; two grandchildren, 12 step grandchildren; four step-great grandchildren; two brothers, Donnie (Vicki) Ellefritz and Lyle Ellefritz, all of Carthage.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother, Max Ellefritz.

She was a day care provider and a custodian at the Center Point schools. She loved talking to people at the post office, going to garage sales, shopping, and traveling. She especially enjoyed going through castles and older homes. In general, she loved life. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

Services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 30, at the First Christian Church, in Center Point, by the Rev. John Caughron. Burial was in the Oakhill cemetery in Williamsburg, Iowa.

LOREN H. SARTORIUS
May 1, 1924 -- Feb. 13, 2002

Loren H. Sartorius, 77, of Buffalo, Mo., died Feb. 13, 2002.

He was born on May 1, 1924, in Basco, the son of George and Grace Buss Sartorius.

He is survived by one daughter, Linda Stansberry of Phoenix, Ariz.; two sons, Larry Sartorius of Dallas City and David Sartorius of Colchester; a special friend, Gladys Sheldon of Buffalo; six grandchildren.

Graveside services were conducted Saturday, Feb. 16, at Immanuel cemetery in Basco, under the direction of the Banks & Beals Funeral Home of LaHarpe.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Engles Senior Citizens Center.

RUTH F. KIMMELL

Ruth F. Kimmell, 80, of Hamilton, died Tuesday, April 23, in Montebello Manor HealthCare Center in Hamilton.

Arrangements are pending at the Lamporte Funeral Home in Hamilton.
