Blanche E. Hodgen

Blanche E. Hodgen, age 93, of LaHarpe, died Tuesday, September 12, 2000, at 1:10 a.m. at the LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center in LaHarpe.
She was born on June 28, 1907, in Terre Haute, Illinois, the daughter of Eugene Rigdon and Edna McDermott Hodgen.
She is survived by cousins.
She was proceded in death by her parents and one brother, Forest Hodgen.
She lived in Chicago for 27 years, where she worked for the Zenith Corporation. She returned to LaHarpe in 1963. She was a member of the Old Bedford Christian Church, near Blandinsville.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 14, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Banks and Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe. Officiating will be Reverend Dennis Brooks. Burial will be in the Terre Haute cemetery. Friends may call anytime after 2 p.m., Wednesday (today), at Banks and Beals in LaHarpe.
A memorial fund has been established for the LaHarpe Historical Society.
DONNY EASLER

Donny L. Easler, of Carthage, died Monday, February 5, 2001. He was married
to Jennifer Easler (Jones).
He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Jeff (Lynnette) Boaz, Mrs. Tim (Carrie) Haynes; two sons, Michael Link, the late, Thomas Joseph Easler; four grandchildren, Angela, Michael, Marissa and Carlee; one sister, Peggy (Jack) Huckstep; six brothers, Gene (Sherry) Easler, Jim (Diann) Easler, Matt (Pam) Easler, Steven (Brenda) Easler, Doug (Diana) Easler, Tim (Cindy) Easler; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Services were held Thursday, February 8, at the Shephard Funeral Chapel in St. Louis, Mo. Burial was in the National cemetery, Jefferson Marracks, Mo. Memorials can be given to the VFW Post #5117 of Carthage, 29 N. Madison, Carthage IL 62321.
ELBERTA LANE
Nov. 28, 1905 - April 14, 2001
Elberta Reid Lane, 95, a music teacher in Carthage for many years, died Saturday, April 14, 2001. She was born Nov. 28, 1905, in Hereford, Texas. Her mother died 9 days later, leaving Elberta in the care of her maternal grandmother. When she was 2 years old, she came to Illinois to live with her father's sister, Della Galloway. When she was 8, she went back to her grandmother in Texas.
Elberta returned to Illinois after she finished music school in St. Louis. She married
Ted Lane of Carthage in 1928.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Joan (Richard) Baker of Morton Grove; one son, William (Beulah Shipman) Lane of Canton, Illinois; seven grandchildren, Rhonda Lane Weers, Karen Lane Haacke, Michael Karras, Bruce Lane, Lori Karra, Cyndie Lane Rees, and Chris Karra Nowotarski; and 13 great-grandchildren.
She began her involvement in music by working for a piano teacher in exchange for piano lessons. Her early love of drawing caused her grandmother to complain that she was wasting too much paper. In later life, these gifts manifested themselves in many beautiful oil paintings that adorn the homes of her family and friends. She was a pianist, gave private piano lessons and served as organist in the First Baptist Church of Carthage for many years. She infused others with her love for music.
Elberta was also a prolific writer, including her autobiography in which she described many historical events as seen through the eyes of a child of those times.
Elberta is remembered for her beauty, her love of family, music, and her strong faith.
Services were held April 18 at Belden Baptist Church in Niles. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. April 19, at Moss Ridge cemetery, Carthage.
FLORENCE LOUISE JOHNSON
February 13, 1915 - July 9, 2001
Florence Louise Huls Johnson, 86, a lifelong resident of Basco, died Monday, July 9, 2001, at Memorial Hospital in Carthage.
She was born February 13, 1915, in Bear Creek Township to Meinert and Trientje Harberts Huls. On January 7, 1934, she married
Jurgen Johnson. He died January 20, 1966.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Neil (Darlene) Pfeiferling of Hamilton; two sons, John M. (Myrna) Johnson of Basco, and Michael (Virginia) Johnson also of Basco; six grandchildren, Kathy Manley, Pamela Johnson, Steve Pfeiferling, Scott Pfeiferling, David Johnson and Kristie Johnson; and four great grandchildren: Zachary Manley, Aaron Johnson, Kailee Pfeiferling, and Cortney Steffensmeier.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and one sister, Emma Gronewold.
She was a lifelong and very active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of rural Carthage. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, crocheting and gardening. She enjoyed "old-time" country music and Billy Graham programs. She and her husband farmed for many years in Basco, and she assisted in the management of the family farm.
Services were held Thursday, July 12, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church with Rev. Dennis Scoville officiating. Burial was held in the church cemetery.
A memorial has been established in the name of Immanuel Lutheran Church of rural Carthage.
DOROTHY R. SMITH
June 9, 1910 -- Nov. 25, 2001
Dorothy R. Smith, 91, of Heritage Manor in Bloomington, and a former long time resident of Carthage, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2001, in Heritage Manor in Bloomington.
She was born June 9, 1910, in Foster Point Township, near Table Grove, the daughter of Arvin and Sophie Immig Cash. On Aug. 3, 1932, in the Cash country home near Table Grove, she married
Olen L. Smith. He died Nov. 14, 1980.
She is survived by two daughters, Dorothy Lynne (John) Schoonover of Rockford and Donna Lee (Darrell) Hartweg of Bloomington; four grandchildren, Susan (Mike) Nagy of Naperville, Michael (Suzanne) Schoonover of Chicago, Jeffrey Hartweg of Chicago, and Jennifer (Jason) Dewar of Dumont, Colo.; two great grandchildren, Allison and Andrea Nagy of Naperville.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and an infant brother.
She graduated from Western Illinois Academy in 1928 and Western Illinois State Teacher's College in 1931, with a B.S. degree in home economics. She taught at Plymouth High School, in Plymouth.
She was a member of the First Christian Church of Carthage, was a 62-year member and past Worthy Matron of Browning Chapter 262 Eastern Star, formerly Plymouth Chapter Eastern Star. She was also a member of Hancock County Retired Teacher's Association and the Hancock County Historical Society.
Friends may call at the Lamporte Funeral Home in Carthage after 3 p.m. Wednesday, (tonight) where the family will meet with friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday evening.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, in the First Christian Church in Carthage, with Rev. Lester Beaman and Rev. Leland Beck officiating. Burial will be in the Moss Ridge cemetery in Carthage.
Memorials in the name of Dorothy R. Smith have been established for the First Christian Church of Carthage or St. John's Lutheran Church in Bloomington.
MARGARET H. ESSLINGER
Sept. 8, 1919 -- Feb. 16, 2002
Margaret H. Esslinger, 82, of the North Adams Home in Mendon, formerly of Bowen, died Saturday, Feb. 16, of natural causes.
She was born on Sept. 8, 1919, the daughter of Oscar and Florence Hume Johnson in Bowen. She married
Henry Benjamin Esslinger. He died in 1979.
She was a member of the Bowen Christian Church.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., on Wednesday, Feb. 20, (today) at Neiser-Printy Funeral Home in Bowen with Pastor Tom Mehaffy officiating.
Burial will follow in the Bowen cemetery.
Memorials may be directed to the Bowen Christian Church Building fund.
HERBERT JOSEPH LARSON
April 17, 1906 -- Aug. 5, 2002
Herbert Joseph Larson, 96, of New Port Richey, Fla., formerly of Warsaw, died Monday, Aug. 5, 2002, at Helen Ellis Memorial Hospital in Tarpon Springs, Fla.
He was born April 17, 1906, one of four sons born to Charles and Alta Syblom Larson. He married
Adelaide Dadant at the Larson Home in Warsaw, on Oct. 1, 1953. She died Feb. 11, 1976.
He is survived by one daughter-in-law, Marybeth Larson of Fairborn, Ohio; two grandsons, Gregory Larson of Beaver Creek, Ohio, and Thomas Larson of Shephard AFB, Wichita Falls, Texas; six great grandchildren, Mikel, Mary, Matthew, Dewayne, Andrew and Preston; two sisters-in-law, Marilyn Larson of Warsaw, and Suzanne Larson of Bridgeton, Mo.; two nephews, Ross Larson of Bridgeton, and Don Larson of Quincy.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; three brothers, Harold in Dec. 1947, Ross in April 1998, and Charles in Nov. 2001; one son, William F. "Bill" Larson in Feb. 2001; a sister-in-law, Arline Larson in April 1985.
He was a graduate from Warsaw High School in Warsaw. He operated a bulk fuel business until World War II. He entered the Army in 1942, fought with General Patton's Fifth Army during the duration of the war. After the war, he started an automotive sales and service business which he operated until he retired in 1966. He later moved to and established a residence at New Port Richey, Fla., where he has lived until the present. He was a member of the St. Paul's Episcopal Church of Warsaw, the Ralph Parker American Legion Post of Warsaw and has served on the Warsaw Park Board.
Services were held Saturday, Aug. 10, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church of Warsaw with Father Michael Coburn as celebrant. A full military service was held at the graveside, following the funeral service, by Warsaw V.F.W. Post #9802 and the Ralph Parker American Legion #682. Burial was in the Oakland cemetery in Warsaw.
A memorial has been established for St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Warsaw.
ROBERT HUTCHISON
Aug. 2, 1922 -- April 10, 2003
Robert G. Hutchison, 80, a longtime resident of Carthage, died Thursday, April 10, 2003, in his home.
He was born Aug. 2, 1922, in Kingston, Iowa, a son of Ray and Clara Jontz Hutchison. On Dec. 29, 1960, he married
Mildred McMinimy in St. Charles, Mo.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred of Carthage; one daughter, Robin Hutchison of Hoffman Estates; three sons, Larry (Susie) Hutchison of Carthage, Randy Hutchison of Denver, Colo., and Danny Hutchison of St. Louis, Mo.; two grandsons, Mark Hutchison of Troy and Michael Hutchison, serving in Iraq.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one infant brother, William Raymond Hutchison.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army in World War II, the recipient of two purple hearts. He was a life member of the Hancock County Post #5117 V.F.W. of Carthage. He enjoyed country music, playing cards and visiting with his friends.
Cremation rites will be accorded following the visitation.
Memorials have been established for the Hancock County Blessing Hospice.
The Lamporte Funeral Home of Carthage is in charge of arrangements.
ANN FLETCHER
June 28, 1923 -- April 21, 2003
Ann Wilma McFarland Fletcher, 79, died April 21, 2003, in her home in Sarasota, Fla.
She was born June 28, 1923, a daughter of Hulda (McFarland) Beckett and Lawrence MacFarland. She married
William E. Fletcher on Dec. 8, 1944.
She is survived by one daughter, Susan (Jerry Lee) Thomas of Sarasota; two sisters, Dorothy Martin of Watseka, and Janet Lee Galisky of Joshua Tree, Calif.; two nieces, Beverly Morrical and Marcia Jacob of Washington, Ill; one nephew, David Wertz of Bloomington; several grand nieces and nephews, and one great- grand niece.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William (Bill) Edmund Fletcher and her parents.
She grew up in the Camp Point area and graduated from LaPrairie High School. She attended Gem City Business College and upon her graduation moved to Washington, D.C., where she worked as a clerk at the Pentagon during World War II. She and her husband made their home in Bowen for 30 years where they were members of the Bowen United Methodist Church. Her husband was a partner in the Morton Seed Company in Bowen. She resided in Boulder, Colo., for 16 years and in Sarasota for 11 years. She shared a residence with her daughter and son-in-law for several years.
A memorial service for both her and her husband was held in the Bowen United Methodist Church on Aug. 9. Internment followed in the Hebron cemetery.
WILLIAM LARSON
June 24, 1943-February 6, 2001
William F. "Bill" Larson, 57, of Fairborn, Ohio, formerly of Warsaw and Hamilton, died Tuesday, February 6, 2001 at his home. He was born on June 24, 1943, in Galveston, Texas, the son of William H. And Adelaide Dadant Fraser. He married
MaryBeth Brown on December 27, 1965, in Warsaw. She survives.
He is survived by his wife; two sons, Gregory W. (Laree) Larson of Fairborn; Thomas E. (Dorothy) Larson of Tyndall AFB, Florida; six grandchildren; and his step father.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He had been extrememly involved with the Boy Scouts of America, volunteering for 25 years. He served with the Tecumseh Council Boy Scouts of America, Troop 162 - WPAFB. He helped 30 boys attain the rank of Eagle Scout. He was also involved with the Miami Valley Astronomical Society of Dayton, Ohio. He was a member of the Church of Mary, Help for Christians in Fairborn, Ohio, and a member of the Knights of Columbus, Fourth Degree.
Services were held Monday, February 12, at Oakland cemetery in Warsaw with Father R.M. Lukoskie officiating. A full Military Service was held by the Warsaw V.F.W. Post #9802 and Ralph Parker American Legion Post #682.
Memorials can be made to Camp Hugh Taylor Birch c/o Tecumseh Council.
