CHARLES L. THOMAS

Charles L. "Chuck" Thomas, 88, of Donnellson, died Saturday, May 29, 2004, at the Ft. Madison Community Hospital.
He was born July 19, 1915, a son of Lester E. and Gladys Holmes Thomas. On March 24, 1940, he married
Alice Mae Simon.
He is survived by his wife, Alice of Donnellson; one daughter, Sandy (Larry) Good of Marshalltown; Iowa; one son, Stan (Lorraine) Thomas of Franklin, Iowa; five grandchildren, Tim (Jo) Thomas, Mike (Ann) Thomas, Terri (Shane) McCoy, Cassie (Chris) Thomas and Christina Good; five great-grandchildren, Dakota, Peyton and Tanner Thomas, and Bailey and Madison McCoy; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Dorothy Robinson and Betty Ebert.
He was a farmer near Hamilton until 1964 when he moved to Newton, Iowa. He later retired as the manager of the Newton Shopping Center and later moved to Donnellson. He was a 50-year member of the Blackhawk Masonic Lodge and the Eastern Star of Hamilton. He was a member of the Goldens Point Christian Church in Hamilton, and the Western Illinois Threshers. He was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and a true friend to many.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 1, at the Hofbauer-Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home in Donnellson, Iowa. Rev. John Simpson officiated. Graveside services and Masonic Rites by the Blackhawk Masonic Lodge were held Tuesday at the Oakwood cemetery in Hamilton.
Memorials will be established in his memory.
HAZEL APPELDORN
May 12, 1928 -- May 29, 2004
Hazel Appeldorn, 76, of Carthage, died Saturday, May 29, 2004, in her home of natural causes.
She was born May 12, 1928, in Henry City, Iowa, the daughter of Clifford and Elva Smith Carle. She married
Robert "Pete" Baird in 1946. She later married
Ben Appeldorn in 1971. He died in 1996.
She is survived by six children, Vicki Baird of Albuquerque, N.M., David (Jan) Baird of Tampa, Fla., Tom (Mary) Baird of Quincy, and Roger (Linda) Baird of Carthage, Pattie Wachtendorf of Pleasant Hill, Iowa, and Rusty (Janice) Baird of Carthage; two sisters, Doris Carson of Carthage and Carol Ogan of California; two brothers, Clifton (Laura) Carle of Carthage and Vaughn "Corky" Carle of Georgia; one special step-daughter, Marilea (Jerry) Lowe of Carthage; three step-daughters; 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; four sisters and four brothers.
She attended Franklin school. She worked at the WCAZ radio station, had sold insurance for Standard Life Company in Carthage, was the respiratory inhalation therapist at Memorial Hospital in Carthage for many years, and had most recently worked at Almost Home assisted living in Carthage. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Carthage, a charter member of the Carthage Saddle club, was a Boy Scout leader, had organized junior league bowling in Carthage, and was a bowling instructor. She had recently become a member of RSVP. She had also spent several years at Cloud Nine Ranch in Missouri. She was well-known among friends and family for her chocolate chip cookies and peanut butter fudge. She was an avid fan of the Carthage Blueboys and Bluegirls and enjoyed going to flea markets.
Private graveside services will be held at South cemetery in Basco.

MARGUERITTE E. COULTER
Dec. 4, 1919 -- July 5, 2004
Margueritte Elizabeth Coulter, 84, of Yuma, Ariz., died July 5, 2004, at YRMC. She was born Dec. 4, 1919, in Carthage, a daughter of Joseph Andrew and Ruth Margueritte Duffy Vance. She married
Roy Melvin Coulter on June 19, 1937.
She is survived by one daughter, Elizabeth Ann (Steve) Cummings; one son, Thomas Lee (Jeannie) Coulter; one sister, Anna Mae (LaVerne) Mitchell of Carthage; one brother, Glenn (Martha) Vance of Macomb; 10 grandchildren, Greg Judd, Melanie (Danny) Millner, Casey Cummings, Tracy (Danny) Jenkins, Marcy (Sean) Snitzer, Tim (Gwen) Coulter, Ryan (Deanna) Coulter, Lariate (Dhondi) Wiegel, Boone and Kobey Coulter; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin and two sons, Robert and Samuel.
She was raised in Carthage. She graduated from Carthage High School in 1937. She and her husband farmed in rural Illinois communities. In 1949, they moved to Chandler Heights, Ariz., and owned a dairy farm. They settled in Mohawk Valley in 1957, where her husband was a custom harvester and she worked at Joyce's General Store in Roll.
Graveside services were held Monday, July 12, in the Desert Lawn Memorial Park.
NORMA J. EICHHORN
July 23, 1924 -- July 23, 2004
Norma Jane Eichhorn, 80, of Augusta, died Friday, July 23, 2004, in the Timberpoint Healthcare Center in Camp Point.
She was born July 23, 1924, in Birmingham Township in Schuyler County, a daughter of Azro Gale and Violet Tarr Harrison. She married
Wilbur Hayden Eichhorn on Feb. 19, 1950.
She is survived by two daughters, Shari (Jim) Freels of Quincy and Norla Neill and her friend Terry Daggett of Columbia; three sons, Lane (Barb) Eichhorn of Mahomet, Brian Eichhorn of Danvers and Kevin (Bonnie) Eichhorn of Quincy; eight grandchildren, Laurie Frese, Jamie Neill, Krista Hopper, Craig Eichhorn, Brandi and Adam Eichhorn, Brian Jr., and Haileigh Eichhorn; three step-grandchildren, Wendi Jones and Ean and James Freels; two sisters, Elva Melvin of Augusta and Naomi (Romi) Simpson of Rushville; one brother, Jack Harrison of Castlebury, Fla.; four step-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother-in-law, Glenn Melvin.
She was a homemaker and had been employed by the Hancock County Shelter Care Home in Augusta, retiring in 1997. She was a 1942 graduate of Augusta High School. She was a member of the United Church of Augusta and served as a community steward for many years. She was also a member of Augusta VFW Post 9029 Auxiliary.
Services were conducted Tuesday, July 27, in the Hamilton Funeral Home in Augusta by Rev. Doug Rettig. Burial followed in the Woodlawn cemetery in Augusta.
Memorials may be made to the United Church of Augusta, Woodlawn cemetery Association or the Augusta VFW 9029 Auxiliary.
PATTSY C. POWELSON
June 16, 1935 -- July 24, 2004
Pattsy C. Powelson, 69, LaHarpe, died Saturday, July 24, 2004, at the Alternatives Home in LaHarpe.
She was born June 16, 1935, near Burnside, a daughter of Cecil R. and Ruby Hickman Burford Sr. On July 31, 1952, she married
Gale W. Powelson near LaHarpe. He died April 4, 2004.
She is survived by two daughters, Nan Chapman and Gayle Vincent, both of LaHarpe; one son, Brad Powelson of Princeton; four grandchildren, Heather Vincent, Ben Fark, Kris Vincent and Alexandra Powelson; one great-grandson, Hunter Vincent; one sister Deloris Woodside of LaHarpe; two brothers, Cecil Burford, Jr. of Fountain Green and Dan Burford of Niota.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 27, at the LaHarpe United Methodist Church. Rev. Diane Bigley officiated. Burial followed in the LaHarpe cemetery.
A memorial fund has been established for the LaHarpe United Methodist Church and the American Cancer Society.
MAGGIE M. HURT
Feb. 6, 1911 --July 25, 2004
Maggie Mabel Hurt, 93, of Basco, died Sunday, July 25, 2004, at Memorial Hospital of natural causes.
She was born Feb. 6, 1911, in Rockport, the daughter of Charles and Jennie Lue Cox. On Nov. 5, 1930, she married
John Hurt in Macomb. He died in 1984.
She is survived by one daughter, Mary (Richard) Pollock of McKinney, Texas; one son, James C. Hurt of Quincy; one daughter-in-law, Clarine Hurt of Basco; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons, Donald and Jon Jr., and 10 brothers and sisters.
She worked as a cook at Carthage College for 17 years, retiring in 1967. She was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Carthage. She was the youngest of 11 children.
Funeral services were held this morning at Printy Funeral Home in Carthage. Pastor Gary Russell officiated.

MARGARET V. HAAS
Oct. 30, 1925 -- July 23, 2004
Margaret V. Haas, 78, a lifelong resident of Nauvoo, died Friday, July 23, 2004, in her home in Nauvoo.
She was born Oct. 30, 1925, in Niota, a daughter of John and Florence Boddecker Hogan. On Nov. 14, 1946, in St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Nauvoo, she married
Fred O. Haas. He died Oct. 2, 1999.
She is survived by three daughters, Kathy (Jim) Rogers of Lomax, Ellen (John) Hundt of Nauvoo, and Joni (David) Kraft of Nauvoo; four sisters, Mary E. Scheetz of Nauvoo, Cleta Beimer of Ft. Madison, Cecelia Richards of Danville, Iowa, and Martha Galbraith of West Point, Iowa; three brothers, George Hogan of Burlington, John D. Hogan of Niota, and Bernard Hogan of Niota; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Fred; two sisters, Irene Parrot and Alberta Weatherwill.
She went to school in Nauvoo and graduated from Nauvoo High School. She was a member of St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society, the Peace Makers Quilt Club for 40 years, R.S.V.P., and the Nauvoo Senior Singers. She and her husband owned and operated the Draft House in Nauvoo and Haas Trucking Company for many years. She had worked at the Nauvoo State Bank, served on the Election Board, was the former librarian at the Nauvoo Public Library and had been Nauvoo Grape Queen. She loved to knit, quilt and work with her flowers, sing, play cards, read, visit with her neighbors, but most of all, cherished her family and spending time with them.
Funeral mass was held Tuesday, July 27, in Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Nauvoo. Father Luke Spannagel served as celebrant. Burial followed in the Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic cemetery in Nauvoo.
Memorials in the name of Margaret V. Haas have been established for Sts. Peter & Paul, Nauvoo Public Library or Nauvoo First Responders.
MELVIN L. BRUNS
July 15, 1931 -- July 18, 2004
Melvin L. Bruns, 73, of Augusta, died Sunday, July 18, 2004, in Blessing Hospital.
He was born July 15, 1931, in Bentley, a son of Floyd and Alma Leenerts Bruns. He married
Eunice Williams on Aug. 4, 1951, at Camp Breckenridge, Ky.
He was a 1949 graduate of Bowen High School. He was a veteran in the Army, serving in the Korean War. He was retired from farming and worked as a substitute rural mail carrier in rural Loraine. He was a member of Bowen Christian Church and served on the church board. He also served on the board of the Lamoine Christian Camp near Tennessee. He was also a member of the Bowen American Legion Post 1087.
He is survived by his wife; four sons, Keith (Brenda) Bruns of Basco, Eldon (Marla) Bruns of Loraine, Larry (Kathy) Bruns of Augusta, and Kevin (Debbie) Bruns of Augusta; six grandchildren, Denise, Adam, Brandon, Aaron, Dalton, and Michael Bruns; three step-grandchildren, Mindy, Marah and Christopher Chapman.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, David Bruns; and one sister, Phyliss Strickler.
Services were held July 22 in the Bowen Christian Church. Rev. Tom Mehaffy and the Rev. Patsy and Jerry Spratt officiated. Burial with military rites followed in the Woodlawn cemetery in Augusta.

PHILIP D. WILLIAMS
March 19, 1932 -- July 21, 2004
Philip Dean Williams, 72, of Keokuk, Iowa, died Wednesday, July 21, 2004, in the Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa.
He was born March 19, 1932, in Chili Township, a son of Kenneth F. and Grace Pauline Thornton Williams. He married
Clarita Langston on Nov. 19, 1958, in Davenport, Iowa. She died March 28, 2002.
He is survived by one daughter, Leah D. Williams of Keokuk; two sons, David L. Williams of Keokuk, and Mark D. (fianc/, Wendy Thyson) Williams of Quincy; three grandchildren, David L. Williams II, Amanda J. Williams, and Devan J. Williams; one brother and sister-in-law, Max and Ellie Williams of Quincy; and several cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
He served overseas with the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. Wisconsin during the Korean Conflict. He had been employed at Montgomery Ward, Chanen's Auto Supply in Keokuk and Hamilton for a number of years, and was then employed at Wal-Mart for over 10 years. He was a member of the St. Paul United Church of Christ, American Legion Post #41, and V.F.W. Post #3508. He enjoyed sitting by the river and gathering with friends at McDonalds and the American Legion Hall. He attended area trap shoots, enjoyed fastpitch softball, and was an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan.
Services were held Monday, July 26, at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk. Rev. Jack Spratte officiated. Burial followed in the Keokuk National cemetery.
Memorials may be made to St. Paul United Church of Christ or to Keokuk Area Hospital.
MARGARET E. GUALTIERI
Oct. 11, 1927 -- July 30, 2003
Margaret E. Gualtieri, 75, Las Vegas, Nev., formerly of Dallas City, died July 30, 2003, following complications from surgery in Las Vegas.
She was born Oct. 11, 1927.
She was a former employee of the Italian Village in Dallas City.
Family will meet with friends on Saturday, July 31, from 9 a.m. until noon, with a one-year anniversary memorial service at 10:30 a.m., at Banks & Beals Funeral Home near Dallas City. Her ashes will be laid to rest with two of her sons at Harris cemetery near Dallas City. Her husband, Louis J. Gualtieri and other family members will be attending the service.
