EDSON A. CROSSLAND

Edson Alva Crossland, 78, of Bowen, died at Memorial Hospital in Carthage on Tuesday, March 23, 2004, of cancer.
He was born Jan. 3, 1926, in Augusta, the son of Frank and Ollie Clark Crossland. On May 22, 1948, he married
Onilee Newell in Macomb.
He is survived by his wife, Onilee of Bowen; two daughters, Karen L. (Dr. James) Scott of Mexico, Mo., and Marsha (John) Medders of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; three sons, Alan (Lisa) Crossland of Jefferson City, Mo., Kevin (Shu Yun) Crossland of Singapore, and Russell (Laura) Crossland of Mexico, Mo.; eight grandchildren, Charlene Scott of Columbia, Chris Scott of Middletown, Ohio, Nick Crossland of San Diego, Calif., Apryl Crossland of Chicago, Jessica and Ryan Crossland of Canton, Mo., and Stormi and Travis Crossland of Mexico; two nieces; two nephews; seven step-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Ruth Paar and her husband Frank; and one sister-in-law, JoAnn Newell.
He attended school in Bowen, graduating from Bowen High School in 1943. He was a member of the Bowen United Methodist Church, the Bowen cemetery Board, Southeastern School Board, and the Hancock County Grain Board. He was a lifelong farmer.
Funeral services were held Friday, March 26, at the Bowen United Methodist Church. Sandy Bunnell officiated. Private interment services will be held at a later date.
Memorials may be made to the Bowen United Methodist Church, the Bowen cemetery, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
JOHN E. HART, SR.
July 29, 1910 -- March 28, 2004
John E. Hart, Sr., 93, of Lomax, died Sunday, March 28, 2004, at the LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center in LaHarpe.
He was born July 29, 1910, in Dunlap, the son of John H. and Clara Burgess Hart. On Dec. 3, 1936, he married
Leona Thurman in Toulon.
He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Eileen Logan of Lomax and Jean McGee of LaHarpe; two sons, James Hart of Lomax and John Hart, Jr. of Oquawka; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Velma Thurman of Yates City, and Hazel Hart of Stronghurst.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, William and Raymond Hart; twin sisters in infancy; one great-granddaughter, Beverly Bradford, and his parents.
He farmed near Lomax and worked at the Iowa Army Ammunitions Plant in Middletown, Iowa, for over 20 years, retiring in 1976. He was a member of the Local 218 Teamsters Union.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 31, at Carman cemetery in Carman. Rev. Charles Stevens will officiate.
A memorial fund has been established for the Lomax Ambulance.
DALE H. DUNN
Dec. 23, 1921 -- May 31, 2004
Dale H. Dunn, 82, of LaHarpe, died Monday, May 31, 2004, at the LaHarpe Davier Health Care Center in LaHarpe.
He was born Dec. 23, 1921, in LaCrosse, the son of James Clinton and Helen Johnson Dunn. On March 31, 1943, he married
LaVerne Fife in Kahoka, Mo. She died Nov. 24, 1999.
He is survived by two daughters, Deborah (Ron) Eccles of Burlington, Iowa, and Dorinda (Jerry) Winget of Bushnell; three grandchildren, Jeremy Winget, Jesse Winget and Dalayna Winget; two sisters, Betty White of Quincy and Lil Anders of LaHarpe; and one brother, Donald Dunn of Galesburg.
He was preceded in death by his wife and parents.
He was a lifelong resident of LaHarpe. He served as a gunner's mate in the US Navy during World War II. He was a retired carpenter. He enjoyed working with wood, gardening, music and bird watching. He had served as mayor of LaHarpe and was a member of the LaHarpe Christian Church where he served as deacon and Sunday school teacher.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 3, at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Robin Thompson officiating. Burial, with military rites, will be in the LaHarpe cemetery. There will be no formal family visitation but friends may call at the funeral home anytime after 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 2.
A memorial fund has been established for Parkinson's Disease Research or the LaHarpe Christian Church.
ROBERT C. WOLFE
Nov. 18, 1929 -- June 1, 2004
Robert C. Wolfe, 74, of Carthage died at his home on Tuesday, June 1, 2004. Services are pending at Lamporte Funeral Home in Carthage.
GARY D. HELENTHAL
Nov. 10, 1949 -- March 22, 2004
Gary Douglas Helenthal, 54, of East Liverpool, Ohio, formerly of Hamilton, died at his home on Monday, March 22, 2004.
He was born on Nov. 10, 1949, in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of Francis and Caroline Gittings Helenthal. On Dec. 30, 1972, he married
Carolyn Mays of East Liverpool.
He is survived by his parents of Hamilton; three sisters, Carol Ann McMillen of Hamilton, Teresa Klein of Gillette, Wyo., and Barbara Helenthal of Hamilton; four brothers, Steve Helenthal of Hamilton, John Helenthal of Keokuk, Bill Helenthal of Hamilton, and Jim Helenthal of Quincy; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife on Dec. 10, 2003.
He was a 1967 graduate of Hamilton High School. He was a proud member of the US Marine Corps, serving two tours of duty in Vietnam as a Marine recon, receiving appropriate medals along with a Purple Heart. He was engaged in some of the heaviest fighting of the war.
Graveside services with full military rites were held Saturday, in the Columbia County Memorial Park, in East Liverpool.
Memorials will be established by the family.
CARL W. LARSON
April 2, 1934 -- Sept. 7, 2004
Carl Williams Larson, 70, of Quincy, died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2004, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy.
He was born April 2, 1934, in Tennessee, the son of John and Mildred Larson. He married
Julia Ferguson on Jan. 1, 1956, at the Appanoose Presbyterian Church near Niota.
He is survived by two sons, Michael (Laurie) Larson of Bozeman, Mont., and Mark (Martha) Larson of Macomb; five grandchildren, Keely, Kamryn, Jonathan, Jordan, and Mikael; his mother, Mildred Larson of Carthage; one sister, Lynn (Merill) Pollock of Prophetstown; two brothers, Donald Larson and David (Karen) Larson of Carthage; one niece, Shannon; four nephews, Shawn, Shay, Bradley and Randy.
He was preceded in death by his father, John Larson.
He grew up in Hancock County participating in many activities typical of rural Illinois and working hard on the farm with his brothers and their father. He graduated from Carthage High School in 1952 where he was a gifted athlete. He excelled in both football (co-captain of senior team) and basketball for the Carthage Blueboys. He was well liked by classmates and friends throughout his life. He attended Western Illinois University in 1952 and 1953 before volunteering for the armed services in 1954, serving in Korea and Hawaii and receiving honorable discharge on Oct. 20, 1955.
Following his military duties, he returned to western Illinois. He engaged in several occupations including farming, agricultural services, and construction, primarily in Hancock County. In 1971, he became a resident of the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy, where he spent his remaining years. He worked many jobs at the Veterans Home and, as no surprise, was very popular around the campus with friends and staff. He loved to play pool and could handily beat just about anyone he played. He was an avid Cub fan and card player. He also enjoyed dancing.
He was a regular member of the All Faith Chapel at the Illinois Veterans Home. His unforgettable attributes were his ability to respect people and give the gift of his friendship. He will always be remembered as a man who possessed a heart as big as the ocean with unparalleled generosity traits. Although a man of few words, he stressed to his sons that there were two categories of people in this world, "amateurs and professionals." Strive to be a professional.
Funeral services were held Sept. 11, at the Burnside Christian Church. Pastor Charles Ferguson officiated. Burial followed in the McKay cemetery near Burnside.

WAYNE S. LOVELL
March 9, 1934 -- Sept. 11, 2004
Wayne S. Lovell, 70, of Plymouth, died Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004, in his home.
He was born in Carthage on March 9, 1934, a son of Earl Lee and Thelma M. Melvin Lovell, Sr. He married
Sandra S. Clark on Jan. 1, 1957, in Colmar Christian Church.
He is survived by one daughter, Teena (Ben Kellett) Reid of Carthage; one son, Mike (Anita) Lovell of Colchester; four grandchildren, Jessica (Jake) Hunt, Cody Lovell, Nathan and Nicole Reid; one step-granddaughter, Kristen Sowers; one brother, Earl Lee (Paula) Lovell Jr., of Enid, Okla.; one sister-in-law, Iris (Bud) Creasey of Colcehster; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is a 1953 graduate of Plymouth High School. He was a farmer and was employed by NTN Bower in Macomb, retiring in 1997. He was a member of the Colmar Christian Church and served as an elder of the church. He served on the Hancock County Township board and the St. Mary's cemetery board. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed following sporting events when his family was participating. He also made maple syrup every spring. He served in the Korean War with the 115 HQ 82nd Airbourne Division at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, from 1953-1956.
Graveside services were held Tuesday, Sept. 14, in St. Mary's cemetery near Plymouth. Rev. Dan Ormond officiated.
Memorials may be made to the McDonough District Hospice, St. Mary's cemetery, or the Colmar Christian Church.
SAMUEL K. RAMSEY
July 17, 1938 -- Sept. 12, 2004
Samuel Kime Ramsey, 66, of Bowen, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 2004, at his home of cancer.
He was born July 17, 1938, at the family farm north of Bowen, the son of William Leon and Martha Viola Hull Ramsey. In 1961 he married
Juanita Van Ostrand, and they later divorced.
He is survived by one sister, Doris Mae Smith of Bowen; two brothers, Robert Hull Ramsey of Bowen, and Gerald Leon (Shirley) Ramsey of Bowen; six nephews; three aunts; one uncle; and his friend, Edward J. Newton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother-in-law, George Smith; his sister-in-law, Jean Ramsey; and his niece, Ronelle Bunnell.
He attended the Bowen schools, graduating from Bowen High School in 1956. He attended Mesabi Junior College and MacMurray College, and graduated from Illinois Wesleyan College in 1961. After graduation he taught music in the Pontiac schools. In 1966 he started Red Door Antiques in Bloomington, and in 1975 he moved the business to Bowen. He operated the Village Inn Restaurant in Bowen from 1980 to 1986.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 15, with the family meeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 16, in the Bowen United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Bowen Abbey.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Bowen Abbey.
HAZEL M. WORLEY
Nov. 15, 1922 -- Sept. 10, 2004
Hazel M. Worley, 81, of Lomax, died Friday, Sept. 10, 2004, at the Oak Lane Nursing and Rehab in Stronghurst.
She was born Nov. 15, 1922, in LaHarpe, the daughter of Wilbur and Narcia Gilmore Torrence. On May 2, 1940, she married
Henry Virgil Worley in Burlington, Iowa. He died on March 22, 1986.
She is survived by two daughters, Sally Maynard of rural Dallas City, and Judith Grisham of Lomax; one son, Joseph Worley of Lomax; two foster sons, Gene Roark of Lomax and Nickolas Roark of Media; 17 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Wanda Cameron of Fountain Green.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Maurice and Gilbert Worley; two grandsons, Jamie and Ivan Worley; one great-grandson, Darren Maynard; one sister, Rosie Reed and seven brothers, Chester, Donald, Roy, Raymond, Lindsey, Roger and Lyle Torrence.
Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 13, at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Rev. John Bremer officiating. Burial was in the Carman cemetery, Carman.
Memorials may be made to the Oak Lane Nursing and Rehab in Stronghurst or the Lomax Church of the Nazarene.
Juanita I. Newton
Feb. 2, 1913 -- Sept. 10, 2004
Juanita Irene Newton, 91, died Friday, Sept. 10, 2004, at the Sullivan Illinois Masonic home.
She was born Feb. 2, 1913, near Knox County, Mo., the daughter of Martin Kiesow and Rena Alice Golbrecht Kiesow. She married
Howard Newton on Sept. 19, 1937, in Hamilton. He died in 2001.
She is survived by one daughter, Colene (Alex) Freadman of Winston, Ore.; one son, Fred (Merry) Newton of Surprise. Ariz.; one brother, Herbert Kiesow of Bellflower, Calif.; three granchildren, Jeanna (Ryan) Morris of Bloomington, Debbie Freadman of Tualatin, Ore., Wesley (Robin) Freadman; three great-grandchildren, Maggie, Timmy and Charlie of Tualatin, Ore.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Edna Charlene in infancy; four sisters, Maybelle Fisher of Hurdland, Mo., Edna Dye of Ferris, Rosalie Landers of Tempe, Ariz., Dorothy Brierton of Ferris; two brothers, Harry Kiesow of Ferris and Robert Kiesow of Santa Monica, Calif.
They farmed and lived in the Colusa/Denver area before moving to Winston, Ore., in December 1947. In Winston they had a large peach orchard and fruit stand and later built a laundromat. They subdivided the peach orchard which today remains as the Illinois Heights subdivision. They were founding members of the Winston Christian Church. In 1968, they moved to the Portland area, later returning to Illinois in 1995. Family and friends were important to Juanita. She made those who knew her feel special, had a wonderful sense of humor, was a terrific cook and flower gardener.
Funeral services will be held at the Sullivan Illinois Masonic Home on Friday, Sept. 17, at 1 p.m. Graveside services and interment will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 18, at the Meyers cemetery in Hancock County.
