Gladys H. Dugan, 95, of the Hancock County Nursing Home, formerly of Des Moines, Iowa, died Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004.
She was born Feb. 16, 1909 in Marion, Iowa, the daughter of Martin and Sopha Groth Ruvoldt.
She is survived by two daughters, Marian (Richard) Garner of Ankeny, Iowa, and Roberta Bethard of Carthage; four grandchildren, Debi (John Richards) Garner, Sandi Jewett, Michele (Jeff) Forrester and Kristy (Scott) Mahan; five great-grandchildren, Greg and Lauren Jewett, Nathan Forrester and Connor and Colin Mahan.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Lucille White, Esther Fritz and Ellen Willson; one brother, Martin Ruvoldt; and husbands, Milton R. Grady, Elmer Ethridge and Kenneth Dugan.
She had been employed at the Register & Tribune and the Insurance Exchange Building as an elevator operator for many years. She was a member of the Highland Park Presbyterian Church and was a long time resident of Highland Park.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Sept. 8, at the Hamilton Funeral Home. Burial was in the Highland Memorial Gardens.

BETTY R. BELDEN
March 30, 1927 -- Nov. 5, 2004
Betty R. Belden, 77, of Augusta, died Friday, Nov. 5, 2004, in McDonough District Hospital in Macomb.
She was born March 30, 1927, in Camden, a daughter of Alvin Earl and Lena Black Kelly. She married
Harold L. Belden on Nov. 17, 1946, in Bowen.
She is survived by two sons, Keith LaVerne (Brenda) Belden of Augusta and Kenneth Harold (Victoria) Belden of Augusta; five grandchildren, April (Jason) Marlow of Mediapolis, Iowa, Kathy (Jade) Rigney of Carthage, Michelle (Keith) Miller of Golden, Kasey Belden of Bowen, and McKenzie Belden of Augusta; two step-grandchildren, Michelle (Scott) Dooley of Carthage and Michael Schone of Bowen; three great-grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; one sister, Wilma (Dean) Janssen of Augusta; four brothers, Lee (Ginger) Kelly of Macomb, Dale (Marcia) Kelly of Plymouth, Mike (Shirley) Kelly of Huntsville, and Larry Kelly of Plymouth; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one grandson, Robert Harold Belden; three sisters, Jeanette Loren, Imogene Steinkruger and Mary Lou Kelly in infancy; and one brother, Earl Junior Kelly.
She was a graduate of Liberty High School. She was employed at the Crossland Locker in Bowen for many years and in more recent years by the Rhodes Market in Augusta. She was of the Methodist faith. She was a member of the Bowen American Legion Auxiliary. She loved flowers and cooking for her entire family. Spending time and being with those she loved was her joy in life.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 9, in Hamilton Funeral Home in Augusta. Rev. Patsy Spratt officiated. Burial followed in the Woodlawn cemetery in Augusta.

VIRGINIA J. DENNIS
Jan. 22, 1933 -- Nov. 29, 2004
Virginia J. Dennis, 71, of Warsaw, died Monday, Nov. 29, 2004, at her home.
She was born Jan. 22, 1933, in Warsaw, a daughter of Lloyd and Pearl Patterson Lapsley. On July 20, 1949, she married
James Russell Dennis in Warsaw.
She is survived by one daughter, Sheila VanDever of Keokuk, Iowa; four sons, John (Sheryl) Dennis of Dallas City, Ronald Dennis of Columbus, Ohio, James (Sue) Dennis of Davenport, Iowa, and Tim (Diane) Dennis of Warsaw; one sister, Veneta Justice of Kahoka, Mo.; one half-sister, Beulah Roberts of Fremont, Ohio; her precious little poodle, Penny; nine grandchildren, Andy and Candi Dennis, Greg and Brian Dennis, Dale Dennis, Matthew, Jenna and Alaina Dennis, and Katie VanDever; and one great-granddaughter, Katelyn Dennis.
She was preceded in death by eight half-sisters; one half-brother; her parents; and one son-in-law, Richard VanDever.
She was a member of the Bel Air Baptist Church in Keokuk. She was employed at Shaffer Pen in Ft. Madison, Iowa, for 18 years. She had been the assistant manager at Kirlins and Claires in the Keosippi Mall in Keokuk, and had also been a Mary Kay consultant. She loved to cook and bake for her family. She also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and collecting Precious Moments. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and received much joy from spending time with her grandchildren.
Visitation will be held after 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, with the family meeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 2 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, with Rev. Jim Dennis officiating. Burial will be in the Oakland cemetery in Warsaw.
Memorials may be made to Blessing Hospice of Hancock County.
FRANCES E. SMITH
June 13, 1916 -- Nov. 23, 2004
Frances E. Smith, 88, of Colusa, died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004, at the Memorial Hospital in Carthage.
She was born June 13, 1916, near Adrian, the daughter of George and Gertrude Black Bailey. On Oct. 5, 1940, she married
Leslie E. Smith in Keokuk, Iowa.
She is survived by her husband; two daughters, Shari (Wayne) Gerhardt of Niota and Sandra (Vernon) Hurlburt of Ferris; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one sister, Jessie Irene Smith of Macomb; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Brenda Smith; and infant son, Jackie Smith; and two brothers, Martin and George Bailey.
She attended grade school at a country school near Adrian, then attended one year of high school at Colusa and graduated from Carthage High School. She enjoyed quilting and made one for each of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed traveling and meeting new people. She was a member of the Home Extension, the Colusa United Methodist Church, the Women's Missionary Society and the Ladies Aid Society.
Services were held Saturday, Nov. 27, at the Colusa United Methodist Church. Rev. Beckie Laumeier officiated. Burial followed in the Harris cemetery near Dallas City.
A memorial fund has been established for the Lomax Ambulance Service and the Colusa United Methodist Church.
DENISE WILLITS
Nov. 16, 1963 -- Nov. 29, 2004
Denise Willits, 41, of rural Lomax, died Monday, Nov. 29, 2004, in a traffic accident near Stronghurst.
She was born Nov. 16, 1963, in Peoria, the daughter of Robert Burr and LaVonne Carlson Pence. On July 11, 1982, she married
Stephen Paul Willits in Dallas City.
She is survived by one daughter, Erica Willits, at home; one son, Brad (Desiree) Willits of Lomax; two grandsons, Lucas and Timothy Willits; her parents, Burr and LaVonne Pence of Lomax; and one brother, Greg Pence of Shipman.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents.
She was a graduate of Southern High School in Stronghurst and obtained degrees in computer accounting and micro computers from Southeastern Community College in West Burlington. She has worked at the Iowa Ammunitions Plant in Middletown, Mendenhall Oil Company, and Wal-Mart in Burlington, and was currently employed as a secretary for Faith Lutheran Church, Carman United Methodist Church, Grace Bible Church, and Faith Lutheran Church. She was a member of the Grace Bible Church of Dallas City.
Friends may call after 3 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 3, in the Grace Bible Church in Dallas City, with Revs. Larry Menschel and Larry VanGundy officiating. Burial will be in the Carman cemetery.
A memorial fund has been established for the Grace Bible Church of Dallas City.
THOMAS C. VANCE
Feb. 17, 1926 -- Dec. 11, 2004
Thomas C. Vance, 78, of Nauvoo, died Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004, in the Hancock County Nursing Home in Carthage.
He was born Feb. 17, 1926, in Palmyra, Mo., a son of Brita A. and Mattie M. Goodnight Vance. He first married
Deloris Wichman on April 2, 1961, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Carthage. She died in 1989. He then married
Dorothea Lange on June 15, 1991, in Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Nauvoo.
He is survived by his wife; two step-daughters, Susan Lange Monnier of Hamilton and Linda Lange Henriksen of Nauvoo; three step-sons, Bernard (Nina) Lange of Donnellson, Iowa, Robert Lange of Council Bluff, Iowa, and Edward (Carol) Lange of Two Rivers, Wis.; one sister, Alice Vance (Kenneth) Freiling of Mendon; one brother, William Vance of Palmyra; 14 step-grandchildren; 17 step-great-grandchildren; two nieces and four nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; and one sister, Ollie Vance McFarland.
He went to school in Providence, Mo., attended Hannibal High School and graduated from Emerson High. He was a WWII Army veteran. He farmed before going to work at Shellor Globe in Keokuk where he retired after 28 years. He was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Nauvoo and Alleman Council Knights of Columbus, Nauvoo. He really enjoyed tractors and ice cream.
Funeral Mass was held Wednesday, Dec. 15, in Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Nauvoo. Father Tony Trosley served as celebrant. Burial was in the Oak Grove cemetery, north of Hamilton with full military rites by the Keokuk VFW.
Memorials in the name of Thomas C. Vance have been established for Sts. Peter & Paul School, Hancock Blessing Hospice, or a charity of the donor's choice.
BETTY J. WHITE
Sept. 20, 1923 -- Dec. 11, 2004
Betty Jane White, 81, of Quincy, formerly of LaHarpe, died Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004, at the Sunset Home in Quincy.
She was born Sept. 20, 1923, near Carthage, the daughter of James Clinton and Helen Johnson Dunn. On Nov. 19, 1944, she married
James J. White in LaHarpe.
She is survived by two daughters, Kathy (Kevin) Stevens of Ocean Springs, Miss., and Tammy (John) Rupp of Quincy; four grandchildren, James and Josh Stevens, Blake and Bryce Rupp; two step-grandchildren, Justin and Malinda Rupp; two foster grandchildren, Cindy Hicks Rossiter and Tom Howard; one sister, Lil Anders of LaHarpe; and one brother, Donald Dunn of Galesburg.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Dale Dunn, and her parents.
Early in life she worked at her parents' restaurant, Dunns' Cafe, and later at Travelers' Inn, both in LaHarpe. She was an Avon represenative for many years. She lived in LaHarpe most of her life, moving to Quincy six years ago.
Graveside services were held Wednesday, Dec. 15, at the LaHarpe cemetery. Rev. Bruce Goettsche officiated.
A memorial fund has been established for the LaHarpe Union Church or the Sunset Home.
PATRICIA A. QUESENBERRY
June 17, 1933 -- Dec. 12, 2004
Patricia Ann Quesenberry, 71, of Hamilton, died Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004, at the River Hills Village in Keokuk, Iowa, of natural causes.
She was born June 17, 1933, the daughter of John G. and Viola M. Dorothy Downey in McDonough County. On Sept. 2, 1950, she married
Emory S. Quesenberry, Jr., in Keokuk.
She is survived by her husband of Hamilton; two daughters, Vicki S. (Richard) Hendrickson of Carthage and Brenda L. (Mark) Gibson of Lutz, Fla; four grandchildren, Nicole S. Gellatly, Shannon L. Gibson Johnathan L. Hendrickson, and Chelsea L. Gibson; one brother, Harold "Leo" Downey in Monticello.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Pearl Downey and Roberta Roberts; and one brother, Jesse Downey.
She was a member of the Assembly of God Church.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 15, at the Printy Funeral Home in Carthage. Burial followed in the Keokuk National cemetery.
Memorials may be directed to the Hancock County Volunteers for diabetes.
Lois J. Good
Mrs. Lois J. Good, 84, of Lomax, Illinois passed away Saturday, August, 15, 2009 at 10:47 P.M. at the LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center in LaHarpe, Illinois.
She was born January 21, 1925 in Lomax, the daughter of William Moore and Myrtle Lee Gibbs Cook. On July 3, 1942 she married
David A. Good in Kahoka, Missouri. He preceded her in death on June 9, 1991.
She had worked at the Lomax Canning Factory and later worked in the dietary department at Burlington Medical Center, retiring after 22 years. She lived in Lomax for 58 years, moving to the LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center on November 23, 2004.
Surviving are five children, Ronald D. Good of Lomax, Everette Lavern Good of Keokuk, Iowa, Debra Jean Good-Pantella of Phoenix, Arizona and twins, Lonnie Ray Good of Fort Madison, Iowa and Lori Sue Good-Longstaff of Witchita, Kansas, 10 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, one grandson, one great-great-grandson, three brothers and one sister.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, August 19, 2009 at the Carman cemetery, Carman, Illinois with Rev. Larry Menschel officiating. There will be no formal family visitation, but friends are welcome to stop at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City, Illinois, Tuesday from 4:00 until 8:00 P.M. A memorial fund has been established for the Activities Fund at LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center.
Melvin Ross Grafton
Melvin Ross Grafton, age 76 of Carman, Illinois, died at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday September 1, 2009 at his home. He was born May 21, 1933 near Stronghurst, Illinois, the son of Ross and Nellie VanTine Grafton. On January 13, 1952, he married
Martha Holsteen in Carman. They later divorced. On August 18, 1991, he married
Carolyn Oldham in Carthage, Illinois.
Mel began his career as a truck driver for Hunsaker Trucking Company, and also drove for several other area trucking companies. He owned and operated Grafton Trucking for several years. He had also worked for the State Of Illinois Highway Department for several years. Most recently, he worked as a parts representative for Seitz & Sons Trucking Company. He also had farmed and did custom harvesting for several area farmers. He was a member of the Teamsters Union, Henderson County Farm Bureau, and the former Olena Community Church. He currently attended the Carman United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn, two daughters - Linda Sartorius of Carman, Connie (Micky) Cameron of Oquawka, IL., four sons - Randy (Kathy) Grafton of Stronghurst, Ricky Grafton of Lomax, IL., Terry (Marilyn) Grafton of Lexington, MO., Roger (Mary) Johnson-Grafton of Mexico, MO., one step daughter- Sharon (Mark) Ponte of Simi Valley, CA., twenty four grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two infant daughters and one infant grandson.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday September 4, 2009 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst, with Rev. Richard Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the Carman cemetery. Friends may call after 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Banks & Beals, where the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Thursday. A memorial fund has been established for Henderson County Hospice.
