John B. Griffiths
Mr. John B. Griffiths, 86, of Colusa, Illinois, passed away Saturday, April 25, 2008 at 8:20 P.M. at his home.
He was born December 10, 1922 at home in Appanoose Township, Hancock County, IL to Carl and Besse Griffiths. He married
Phyllis Jean Hanley Hobart on January 10, 1955 in Dalton City, IL.
John attended Colusa High School, graduating in 1940. He apprenticed himself to an electric welder in Carthage, IL, then set up a machinery repair shop on his parents’ farm during World War II. Later he and his father founded the Colusa Elevator Co. in 1944. His brother, Donald, later joined the company which has since grown into a successful company with six grain elevator plants.
At various times he owned a motorcycle, an airplane, and built himself a cabin cruiser boat. He enjoyed playing golf, vacationing with his family in Colorado, working with wood, shopping for the Food Pantry with his wife and watching the Nauvoo-Colusa Vikings play basketball.
Survivors include his wife Phyllis, one daughter, Mary (Paul) Davis of Morago, CA, four sons, John (Connie) Hobart, Warsaw, Dale (Carol) Griffiths, Nauvoo, Steven (Mary) Griffiths, Ft. Madison, IA and Danny Griffiths and special friend Theresa Woulfe of Colusa. He is also survived by twelve grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and four step-great grandchildren; sister-in-law Augusta Griffiths of Littleton, CO and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, one brother and one son, Mark Hobart.
Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, May 1, 2009 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Bob Wagner officiating. Burial will be in the Myers cemetery near Dallas City. Friends may call after 2:00 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Thursday. Memorials can be made to the Colusa United Methodist Church, Blessing Hospice of Hancock County and Dallas City Food Pantry.
Esther V. Gustafson
Mrs. Esther V. Gustafson, 94, of Lomax, Illinois, formerly of Burlington, Iowa passed away Saturday, June 6, 2009 at 1:15 P.M. at the Prairie Ridge Care and Rehabilitation in Mediapolis, Iowa.
She was born January 11, 1915 in Burlington, the daughter of Oscar and Mary Bittner Magnuson. On February 29, 1936 she married
Ivar Gustafson in Burlington. He preceded her in death in 1968.
She and her husband farmed north of Burlington for many years. She lived with her daughter for the past 2 years.
Surviving are one son, David Gustafson of Burlington, one daughter, Joyce Thompson of Lomax, 5 grandchildren, 5 step-grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and several step-great-grandchildren.
The family will meet with friends Tuesday, June 9, 2009 from 10:00 until 11:00 AM at the Peace Lutheran Church in Prairie Grove, Iowa where services will be held at 11:00 AM with Rev. Cindy Johnson and Rev. Peggy Stott officiating. Burial will be in the Burlington Memorial Park cemetery. A memorial fund has been established for the Peace Lutheran Church. Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe is assisting with arrangements.
Roberta A. Haines
Roberta A. Haines, 92, of La Harpe, Illinois died Sunday, March 22, 2009, at 12:20 P.M. at the La Harpe Davier Health Care Center.
She was born July 16, 1916, near Fountain Green, the daughter of Kerus and Zola (Barr) Huston. She graduated from Fountain Green High School and on December 23, 1939, she married
Ellis Haines in Kahoka, MO. He preceded her in death on March 31, 1999.
They lived much of their married
life in Bushnell where she was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Eastern Star and Thimble Club. In 1979 they moved to La Harpe. She was a member of the Union Church of La Harpe.
Surviving is one sister, Dorothy (Jerry) Baker of Quincy, a nephew, Steve (Lynda) Baker of Quincy, and three nieces, Dianne (Rick) Balmer of La Harpe, Donna (Wendell) Cunningham of Quincy and Kathy (Terry) Anastas of Quincy. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Keith and Edward Huston.
Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Rev. Bruce Goettsche officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Macomb, Illinois. Friends may call at the funeral home after 4:00 P.M. Monday where the family will meet with friends Tuesday from 9:30 until time of services. Donald D. Hainline
Mr. Donald D. Hainline, 76, of Sciota, Illinois, passed away Sunday, May 17, 2009 at 5:30 P.M. at the McDonough District Hospital in Macomb, Illinois.
He was born November 8, 1932 in Macomb, Illinois the son of Fred and Florence Dertinger Hainline. On May 15, 1955 he married
Donna L. Paul in Bushnell, Illinois.
Mr. Hainline served in the Air Force during the Korean War. He farmed near Sciota for many years and also worked at WIU in the building services department, retiring as a supervisor. He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge #322 in Bushnell.
He is survived by his wife, one son David (Peg) Hainline of Good Hope, Illinois, two daughters, Denita (Steve) Clover of Dallas City, Illinois and Delinda (Tim) Burke of Good Hope, 5 grandchildren, 1 great-grandson, and one sister, Leah Thompson of Athens, Georgia.
He was preceded in death by 2 granddaughters and his parents.
Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, May 21, 2009 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Rev. Bruce Goettsche officiating. Burial will be in the Good Hope cemetery. Friends may call after 3:00 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home where the Odd Fellows Service will be held at 6:00 P.M. followed by visitation with the family until 8:00 P.M. Wednesday. Mary K. Harris
Mrs. Mary K. Harris, 85, of Fort Madison, Iowa passed away Friday, November 6, 2009 at 5:00 A.M. in her home.
She was born April 1, 1924 in Marion County, Missouri, the daughter of Truman and Mary Iva Modrell Hensley. On July 4, 1942 she married
George Welch in Quincy, Illinois. He died December 6, 1978. On December 1, 1989 she married
Emery Harris in Durham, Illinois.
She was a graduate of the Emerson High School, Emerson, Missouri. She had worked at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant for 23 ˝ years. She was a member of the Durham United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her husband, 2 daughters, Janice (Bill) Morin of West Burlington, Iowa and Sharla Gerdom of Lomax, Illinois, 6 grandchildren, Dawn Walstrom, Michael Morin, Darin and David Worley, Zachary and Elizabeth Welch, 2 step-grandchildren, Jenny Hagerty and Matthew Harris, 5 great-grandchildren, Zane and Delaney Walstrom, Anna Morin and Garett and Dakota Worley, 5 step-great-grandchildren, Jordan Walker, Sadie and Becca Cassiday and Chloe and Sylvia Hagerty, 1 brother, Dr. Lyle D. Hensley of Springfield, Missouri and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, 1 son, Jack Welch, 1 stepson, David Harris, 3 brothers and 1 sister.
Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City, Illinois with Rev. Tom Wright and Bruce Hensley officiating. Burial will be in the Carman cemetery, Carman, Illinois. Friends may call after 4:00 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Tuesday. Mildred "Tommy" Hendricks
Mildred “Tommy” Hendricks, 90, of Dallas City, Illinois passed away Wednesday, December 23, 2009 at 5:40 A.M. at the LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center, LaHarpe, Illinois.
She was born March 1, 1919 in Colusa, Illinois the daughter of Clay and Mary Lambright Wildrick. She married
Nate Hendricks on March 17, 1940 in Dallas City, Illinois.
She is survived by her husband, one daughter, Penny (Kent) Robertson, Dallas City, two granddaughters, Mattie and Caitlin Robertson, one brother, Wendell Wildrick of Carthage, one sister, Marilee “Pug” Price of Elvaston, Illinois, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a son Marvin, 4 brothers, and 2 sisters.
Tommy graduated from high school in Murrayville, Illinois in 1937. She moved with her parents to the Dallas City area in 1938. Tommy was a homemaker and worked with her husband as his bookkeeper. She was a 50 year member of the Burnside Order of Eastern Star, a member of the Dallas City First Christian Church and the Senior Citizens. She loved to make chocolate chip cookies for her granddaughters and was an avid Cub fan.
Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, December 27, 2009 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Tony Newton officiating. Burial will be in the Harris cemetery near Dallas City. The family will meet with friends at the funeral home, Sunday from 11:00 A.M. until time of services. A memorial fund has been established for the Dallas City Senior Citizens Center, the LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center or the Dallas City First Christian Church.
Daniel C. "Danny" Henson
Mr. Daniel C. “Danny” Henson, 56, of the Montebello Manor Nursing Home in Hamilton, Illinois, formerly of Niota, Illinois passed away Wednesday, January, 21, 2009 at 7:45 AM at the Keokuk Area Hospital.
He was born March 21, 1952 in LaHarpe, Illinois the son of Donald and Joan Scanlan Henson. On December 13, 1975 he married
Dorothy Ruschill Kentch in Denmark, Iowa.
Mr. Henson was a graduate of Dallas City High School. He worked for the Niota Elevator, Gleason Manufacturing in Ft.Madison and as a guard at the Iowa State Penitentiary in Ft Madison. He served on the Niota Fire Department and was a trustee and past president of the Eagles Club in Ft Madison. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, camping, dancing and raising, chickens, turkeys, pheasants, quail and geese.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of Dallas City, Illinois, three daughters, Carla Kentch of Niota, Carroll “CJ” Kentch of Dallas City and Christi (Stacy) Dochhterman of Niota, five grandchildren, his step-mother, Viola Henson of Webster, Illinois, two sisters, Jeana Henson of Goodyear, Arizona and Linda (Dean) Heard of Queen City, Missouri and one brother, Jamie (Sydney) Henson of LaPlata, Missouri and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Curtis Kentch.
The family will meet with friends Saturday, January 24, 2009 from 2:00 until 3:00 P.M. at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City where a Celebration of Life service will be held at 3:00 with Rev. Mathew Yaley officiating. A memorial fund has been established.
Alicia Maria Hinojosa
Alicia Maria Hinojosa, age 8, of Lomax, Illinois passed away Sunday, March 8, 2009 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa.
She was born November 2, 2000 in Peoria, Illinois, the daughter of Plutarco “Pete” and Christa S. Taylor Hinojosa Jr.
She was a student in Amanda Twaddle’s class at the Carthage Primary School. She loved music, dancing and swimming. Alicia loved life and everyone she met.
Surviving are her parents of Lomax, her 10 year old sister, Olivia N. Hinojosa, at home, maternal grandparents, Barry and Debbie Taylor of St. Ann, Missouri and paternal grandparents, Plutarco “Pete” and Hortencia Hinojosa Sr. of Lomax, her great-grandparents, Ralph and Christine Clifton of Overland, Missouri and Susan Fortner-South of Poplar Bluff, Missouri and two aunts, Raquel (Hank) Cisneros of Hamilton, Illinois and Mary (James Rowley) Hinojosa of Fort Madison, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her uncle, Nickolas Hinojosa and her great-aunt, Janice Clifton.
A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday, March 13, 2009 at the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Nauvoo, Illinois with Father Tony Trosley officiating. Burial will be in the Sts. Peter and Paul cemetery in Nauvoo. Friends may call after 3:00 P.M. Thursday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City where the Rosary will be recited at 6:00 P.M. followed by visitation with the family until 8:00 P.M. A memorial fund has been established for Amanda Twaddle’s special needs class at the Carthage Primary school.
Shirley Ann Steffey-Holton
Shirley Ann Steffey-Holton, age 78 of Stronghurst, Illinois died at 7:15 a.m. Thursday January 8, 2009 in the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington, Iowa. She was born July 6, 1930 near Stronghurst, the daughter of Benjamin Otto and Ruth Adaline Davis Steffey.
Shirley was married
to Charles H. Smith from 1952 to 1962. In September of 1964, she married
Paul R. Holton. He died in September of 1967.
She was a 1948 graduate of Stronghurst High School and later graduated from Stephens College of Columbia, Missouri with a degree in merchandising. After graduation, she worked in retail and later formed a partnership with the Parolee Shoppe in Monmouth, Illinois. She was later employed by the Bank Of Stronghurst for forty two years, retiring in1998 as Bank Auditor. She was a member of the Stronghurst United Methodist Church.
Survivors include cousins- Richard and Linda Clifton, Gene and Theresa Fox, Don and Beverly Brent, Kenny and Jane Morris, Dick and Karen Peasley, all of Stronghurst, Donald Morris of Des Moines, Iowa, John and Ruth Bickle of Galesburg, IL., Cheryl Peasley of Lorton, VA., Henry and Barbara Thatcher of Danville, CA. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister- Barbara Steffey who died in infancy, and by both husbands.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday January 12, 2009 in the Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst with Rev. Gene Turner officiating. Private entombment will follow in the Hope Abbey Mausoleum in Stronghurst. Visitation is one hour prior to the service on Monday. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be given to Stronghurst United Methodist Church, Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab, or the Stronghurst Ambulance Service.
Lyle E. Huss
Lyle Emerson Huss, age 73 of Lomax, Illinois died at 3:25 p.m. Monday September 28, 2009 in the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa. He was born October 18, 1935 near Gladstone, Illinois, the son of Edward and Helen Hunter Huss. On November 3, 1956, he married
Ethel Anna Moyers in Burlington, Iowa.
Mr. Huss was raised and educated in Gladstone, Illinois. He was an U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He had worked at the former Hudson Gas Station in Gulfport, IL., owned and operated a wrecker service, was employed by the Gladstone Grain Company, and retired from J.I.Case Company in 1992. After his retirement he owned the Huss Melon Stand in Lomax for several years. He was a jack of all trades who helped anyone in need. He was loved by many and will be truly missed.
Survivors include his wife, four daughters - Anna Gerst (and Daren Adler) of Fort Madison, IA., Lyla Huss (and Tim Schaefer) of Burlington, IA., Nancy Huss (and Elvin Hartsock) of Dallas City, IL., Wanda Wilson (and Leon Jr.) of Fort Madison, IA., nine grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, one brother - Edward Huss Jr of Burlington, and four sisters - Glen Ola Lee of Burlington, Gail Furnald and Georgia Kenney, both of Oquawka, IL., and Geneva Stewart of West Burlington, IA. He was preceded in death by one son in infancy - Lyle Emerson Huss Jr., his parents, four brothers and one sister.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday October 2, 2009 in the Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City, Illinois with Rev. Charles Stevens officiating. Lucille Alexander Hustead
Lucille Alexander Hustead, age 96 of Stronghurst, Illinois died at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday November 11, 2009 in the Oak Wood Estates Retirement Village in Stronghurst. She was born August 16, 1913 in Gorin, Missouri, the daughter of Dr. James F. and Louise Fry Alexander. On May 15, 1930, she married
Gilbert Hustead in Memphis, Missouri. He preceded her in death on March 9, 2004.
Mrs. Hustead was a member of the Stronghurst Community Senior Citizens and the Stronghurst Christian Church.
Survivors include one son - Charles Hustead of Granite City, IL., six daughters - Darlene (Ralph) Tatge, Joan (Ronnie) Stamp, Betty (Bob) Smith, and Judy (Howard) Duncan, all of Stronghurst, IL., Isabel (Carroll) Livermore of LaHarpe, IL., Joyce (Jerry) McCarthy of O’Fallon, IL., seventeen grandchildren, forty one great grandchildren, and eleven great great grandchildren. They all loved her very much. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one sister, two brothers, and one great grandson.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday November 14, 2009 in the Stronghurst Christian Church with Pastor Ryan Loucks officiating. Burial will follow in the Stronghurst cemetery. Friends may call after 2:00 p.m. Friday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday. James R. Johnson
James R. Johnson, age 81 of Dallas City, Illinois died a 11:19 a.m. Thursday July 30, 2009 in the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington, Iowa. He was born March 16, 1928 near Roseville, Illinois, the son of Walter and Hildur Dillon Johnson. On February 7, 1953 he married
Dorothy Markey in Carthage, Illinois.
Mr. Johnson was a United States Army Veteran. He had farmed near Dallas City most of his life, and also was employed at J.I. Case Company in Burlington for twenty nine years. He and his family also maintained the Gittings Mound cemetery for many years. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Dallas City, the Knights of Columbus, and the Holy Name Society.
He was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather and enjoyed woodworking, gardening and fishing.
Survivors include his wife, five sons - Jim (Liz) Johnson of Peoria, IL., Paul (Deb) Johnson of Anamosa, IA., David (Kathy) Johnson of Elberon, IA., Bob (Lori) Johnson of Bloomingon, IL., Andy ( Becky) Johnson of Virden, IL., three daughters - Annetta (David) Tevis of Granville, IL., Carol (Jim) Barnett of Florissant, MO., Patty (Jim) Cuffe of Eureka, IL., 31 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and two brothers - Herb Johnson and Larry (Janet) Johnson, both of LaHarpe, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons - Thomas and Joseph Johnson, two granddaughters - Jennifer Johnson and Samantha Barnett, and one sister - Ellen Johnson.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday August 4, 2009 in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dallas City with Rev. Tony Trosley officiating. Burial will be in Gittings Mound cemetery near Dallas City. Friends may call after 3:00 p.m. Monday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City where the family will be present from 5:30 until 8:00 p.m. Monday.
