Joan Elizabeth Johnson
Joan Elizabeth Johnson, age 60 of Stronghurst, Illinois, died at 2:47 p.m. Saturday December 12, 2009 in the Cottage Hospital in Galesburg. She was born May 27, 1949 in Pekin, Illinois, the daughter of Lyle and Kathleen Faren Wardell. She married
Russell Johnson in Smithfield, Illinois.
Mrs Johnson was a homemaker and attended the Stronghurst Christian Church.
Survivors include her husband, one son- Christopher (and Maegan Gold) Johnson of Stronghurst, three grandchildren- Jay and Sabrina Johnson and Rhenna Todd, and three brothers- John Wardell of Bloomington, IL., Jeff Wardell of Knoxville, IL., and Jim Wardell of Gerlaw, IL. She was preceded in death by one step son and her parents.
A memorial service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday December 22, 2009 in the Stronghurst Christian Church. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. until time of services at the church. A memorial fund has been established for her grandchildren.
Virginia C. Kaminski
Mrs. Virginia C. Kaminski, 90, of Dallas City, Illinois passed away Wednesday, January 21, 2009 at 7:35 PM at the Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab Center in Stronghurst, Illinois.
She was born August, 10, 1918 in Dallas City, the daughter of Harold R. and Marjorie Knappenberger Gracey. On July 4, 1937 she married
George Kaminski in Burlington, Iowa. He preceded her in death on March 28, 1994.
Mrs. Kaminski worked as a clerk at the Dallas City Post Office for 25 years. She lived in Dallas City all of her life, except for the winters she and her husband spent in Texas.
She is survived by one son, Gary Kaminski of Dallas City, two daughters, Linda Uchida of North Hollywoood, California and Jan Kaminski of Dallas City, 2 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren and one sister, Marjorie Weese of Dallas City.
She was preceded in death by her husband, 2 sisters, Rahma Britton and Wanda Stanley and 1 brother, Had Gracey.
Graveside services will be held at a later date at Harris cemetery. There will be no visitation. Banks & Beals Funeral Home, Dallas City, is assisting with arrangements.
Marnelle Knight
Mrs. Marnelle Knight, 91, of Carthage, formerly of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Tuesday, March 17, 2009 at 8:40 P.M. at the Memorial Hospital in Carthage.
She was born in Carthage on March 29, 1917, the daughter of Harvey and Pearle Byers Sights. On June 12, 1965 she married
Harold Knight in Oak Lawn, Illinois. He preceded her in death on February 16, 2006.
She worked as a bookkeeper for the Stevens Hotel in Chicago and for the postal service. She moved from the Chicago area to LaHarpe in the mid 1970's. In 2004 she moved to the Hancock County Nursing Home in Carthage. She enjoyed taking pictures and reading.
She is survived by one son, Gerald Hundley, of Hutsonville, Illinois, one grandson, and her good friend, Mary Lou Kubes of Cicero, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.
Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, March 20, 2009 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Pastor Rick Goettsche officiating. Burial will be in the Moss Ridge cemetery in Carthage. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday, from 10:00 A.M. until time of services. A memorial fund has been established for the children’s summer reading program at the LaHarpe Carnegie Public Library.
Ethel F. Kraft
Mrs. Ethel F. Kraft, 96, of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Saturday, July 18, 2009 at 9:30 A.M. at her daughter’s home near LaHarpe, where she had resided the past 10 years.
She was born September 20, 1912 near Walnut Grove, Illinois, the daughter of William and Nora Taylor Hobby. On September 20, 1930 she married
Glenn O. Kraft in Rock Island, Illinois. He preceded her in death on July 17, 2000.
Mrs. Kraft lived all of her life near LaHarpe. She was a member of the LaHarpe Christian Church and had attended the Webster Community Church. She was also a member of the Happy Helpers Club for 72 years. She enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and always attended their sporting events and school activities.
She is survived by one daughter, Marilyn Eddington of LaHarpe, two grandchildren, Deanna Cibak of Newton, New Jersey and Dean Eddington of LaHarpe, six great-grandchildren, Lauren, Kim and Brian Cibak, Dana Blythe, Erica and Tess Eddington, one brother, Lewis Hobby of Burlington, Iowa and one sister, Betty Link of LaHarpe and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, an infant daughter, Melva Joyce Kraft, six brothers, Edwin, Melvin, Arnold, Henry, Kenneth and Ross Hobby and one sister, Leola Carey and her son-in-law, Dale Eddington.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, July 22, 2009 at the LaHarpe cemetery with Larry Hobby officiating. There will be no formal family visitation, but friends are welcome to stop at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe between 2:00 and 8:00 P.M. Tuesday. A memorial fund has been established.
Donna Mae Link
Donna Mae Atwell Link, age 68 of Fort Madison, Iowa, formerly of Pontoosuc, IL, died at 12:20 a.m. Thursday March 12, 2009 in the Fort Madison Community Hospital. She was born May 27, 1940 in Pontoosuc, the daughter of Robert LaVon and Doris Kathryn DeHaven Atwell.
Donna had worked as an assistant postmaster, waitress, cook, mail carrier, and most recently as a slot technician for Catfish Bend Casino. She loved to bake pies, oil paint, and crochet. She was of the Presbyterian faith.
Survivors include two sons - Richard (Kathy) Scott of Pontoosuc, Jeffrey Arthur of Fort Madison, Iowa, two daughters - Kathryn Scott of Palmyra, Missouri, Laurie (Mike) Groth of Fort Madison, nine grandchildren, six great grandchildren, two brothers - Mike (Jeanette) DeHaven of Pontoosuc, Brad DeHaven of Fort Madison, and two sisters - Judy (Bill) Scott of Canton, Missouri and Coleen (Loren) Brown of LaGrange, Missouri. She was preceded in death by her parents, her stepfather - Newell DeHaven, her first husband- Donald Scott, and one brother - Nathan Dane Atwell.
Visitation will be from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. Wednesday, March 18, 2009 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City, Illinois. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Thursday at Myers cemetery, near Dallas City with Rev. Jim Luder officiating. A memorial fund has been established.
Robert W. "Bob" Lowe
Mr. Robert W. “Bob” Lowe, 76, of Pontoosuc, Illinois passed away Wednesday, January 21, 2009 at 3:35 P.M. at the Fort Madison Community Hospital.
He was born July 16, 1932 in Burlington Iowa, the son of Paul F. and Lillie Marsh Lowe. On November 5, 1960 he married
Ardelle Gearman in Chicago, Illinois.
Mr. Lowe served in the US Army from 1949 - 1952 and from 1961 - 1964. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving with the 17th Infantry Regiment. He was a retired Boilermaker, working out of Local 83 in Kansas City, Missouri. He was a lifetime member of the Carthage VFW Post 5117 and the Carthage American Legion Post 74. He served on the VFW board and their Honor Guard. He also served on the Pontoosuc Village Board and was a member of the Fort Madison Moose. He enjoyed Trap Shooting.
He is survived by his wife, one son, Mike (Joyce) Lowe of Kansas City, Missouri, daughter-in-law, Mary Hitchcock of Andalusia, Illinois, one sister, Nellie (Merle) McKee of Spokane, Washington and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and nieces aand nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Ross Hitchcock and two brothers, Paul and Fred Lowe.
Graveside services with Military Honors will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, January 26, 2009 at the Keokuk National cemetery. A memorial fund has been established for the American Lung Association. There will be no visitation. Banks & Beals Funeral Home, Dallas City is in charge of arrangements.
Addie Jo Mapes
Addie Jo Mapes, 23 month old daughter of Murphy and Kelly Mapes of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Sunday, July 12, 2009 at 7:50 P.M. at the Fort Madison Community Hospital, Fort Madison, Iowa.
She was born July 13, 2007 in Carthage, Illinois
She is survived by her parents, two brothers, Zach and Hayden, three sisters, Saedi, Emma and Kaedi all at home, her grandparents, Danny and Betty June Mapes of LaHarpe and Leonard and Rebecca Gilpin of Dallas City, great-grandparents, Pat Shores of LaHarpe and Dorothy Gilpin of Dallas City and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
She was preceded in death by great-grandfathers, Robert Shores and Leonard Gilpin and her cousin, Jacob Markey.
Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, July 16, 2009 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Darren Beachy officiating. Burial will be in the McConnell-Geddes cemetery near Fountain Green, Illinois. There will be no formal family visitation, but friends may stop at the funeral home between 4:00 and 8:00 P.M. Wednesday. A memorial fund has been established. Contributions may be left at the funeral home.
Gail Wade Markey
Mr. Gail Wade Markey, 45, of Dallas City, Illinois passed away Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at 1:10 A.M. at the Memorial Hospital in Carthage, Illinois.
He was born January 13, 1964 in LaHarpe, Illinois, the son of William Anthony “Tony” and Priscilla Karen Gooding Markey. On July 2, 2002 he married
Julie Beach in Carthage.
He was a 1982 graduate of the Dallas City High School and served in the US Army from 1982 until 1986. He then served with the National Guard for four years and was stationed in Germany during Desert Storm. He worked for G. E. in Burlington for 18 years, retiring in 2007 due to a disability. He was a member of the Dallas City American Legion and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his wife, six children, Anthony James Markey, Joseph Thomas Markey, Jessica Marie Markey, Jillian Ann Beach, Jessica Leigh Beach and Rayden William Markey all of Dallas City, his father and step-mother, Tony and Alene Markey of Dallas City, three sisters, Joanne Denise Brown of Elizabeth City, North Carolina, Jacqueline Dee Countryman of Lomax, Illinois and Christina Marie Markey of Fort Madison, Iowa and two brothers, Paul Anthony Markey of Dallas City and Christopher Dean Markey of Anderson, South Carolina. He was preceded on death by his mother.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday, May 29, 2009 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dallas City with Father Tony Trosley officiating. Burial, with Military Rites, will be held at a later date in Gittings Mound cemetery near Dallas City. Friends may call after 3:00 P.M. Thursday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City where a prayer service will be held at 6:30 P.M. followed by visitation with the family until 9:00 P.M. Thursday. A memorial fund has been established for his children’s education.
Dorothy Anna Martin
Dorothy Anna Martin, age 83 of Stronghurst, Illinois died at 8:00 a.m. Tuesday April 14, 2009 in the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa. She was born September 2, 1925 in Burlington, the daughter of Simon V. and Bessie G. Henry Simonson. On May 7, 1944, she married
Thornton L. Martin in Stronghurst. He preceded her in death on November 24, 1999.
Dorothy was a graduate of Stronghurst High School. She had lived in the Stronghurst area from 1944 until 1967. She then moved to Chillicothe, Illinois where she resided until returning to Stronghurst in 1991. She was a member of the Stronghurst Community Senior Citizens, Women’s Auxiliary of the Stronghurst American Legion Post #765, and the Stronghurst United Methodist Church. She loved playing dominos and spending time with her grandchildren.
Survivors include three daughters - Lynne Martin of Galesburg, IL., Susan (Frank) Javorsky of Parkville, MO., Rebecca (Bob) Kevoian of Indianapolis, IN., three sons - Michael (Orpha) Martin of Edelstein, IL., Yale (Carol) Martin of Keller, TX., Rex (Margreth) Martin of Wilmette, IL., twelve grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, and two brothers - John Simonson of Roseville, IL, and Charles (Rosemary) Simonson of Naperville, IL. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and two sisters - Edith Mink and Ruth Mandle.
Friends may call after 2:00 p.m. Thursday April 16, 2009 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst, where the family will be present from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Thursday.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday at the Stronghurst United Methodist Church with Rev. Gene Turner officiating. Burial will be in the Stronghurst cemetery. A memorial fund has been established for the Stronghurst United Methodist Church.
Michael Leon Martin
Michael Leon Martin, 62 of Edelstein died Friday, June 26 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
He was born April 16, 1947 in Galesburg, IL the son of Thornton L. and Dorothy A. (Simonson) Martin. He married
Orpha Kaye Brown on June 7, 1980 in Colchester, IL. She survives.
Also surviving are his children; Jamey L. (Christy) Martin of Naperville, IL, Jennifer K. Schneider of Phoenix, AZ, Jon M. (Rachel) Martin of Washburn, IL and Joel Casey Martin of Edelstein, IL, 8 Grandchildren; 5 Siblings - Lynne A. Martin of Galesburg, IL, Susan (Frank) Javorsky of Parkville, MO, Yale A. (Carol) Martin of Keller, TX, Rebecca (Bob) Kevoian of Indianapolis, IN and Rex A (Margreth) Martin of Wilmette, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents.
He worked for J.A. Fritch & Sons, Inc. He was a member of Local Union #1.
Scouting was a big part of his life since 1958. In 1960 he received his Eagle Scout with Vigil Honors. He was a mentor to a lot of boys in Scouting. He was affiliated with Troop #91 of Chillicothe, IL, Troop #69 of Lacon, IL and Troop #63 of Stronghurst, IL. He loved camping and spending time with his family.
Funeral services will be held at Banks and Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst, IL on Tuesday, June 30 at 11:00am. Burial will be in Stronghurst cemetery. Visitation will be held at Weber-Hurd Funeral Home in Chillicothe on Monday evening from 5-7pm with sharing of memories at 7pm. Memorials may be made to Camp Eastman, Mississippi Valley Council #141.
Bessie M. McConnell
Bessie M. McConnell, 90, of Burlington, Iowa, formerly of Carthage and LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Thursday, February 12, 2009 at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa.
She was born September 10, 1918 in Fountain Green, Illinois, the daughter of Henry and Ella Salisbury DeHaven. On October 2, 1952 she married
James E. McConnell at the Old Bedford Church near Blandinsville, Illinois. He preceded her in death on March 23, 1976.
She and her husband farmed near Fountain Green and Burnside Illinois for many years. They raised two foster children in their home. In 1977 she moved to Carthage, Illinois where she was active in the senior center and RSVP. She enjoyed gardening, sewing and embroidering. She moved to Burlington in 2000.
She is survived by one daughter, Christine Cheeley of Burlington, three grandchildren and one sister, Maxine Beckwith of Peoria, Illinois.
She was preceded in death by her husband and three brothers, Robert and Newell DeHaven and an infant brother.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, February 16, 2009 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe. Burial will be in the McConnell-Geddes cemetery near Fountain Green, Illinois. The family will meet with friends Monday from 1:00 PM until time of services. A memorial fund has been established for the Home Caring Services of Burlington or the Southeast Iowa Area Agency on Aging Home Delivered Meals Program.
Michael J. McKinnon
Michael John McKinnon, 65, of Terre Haute, died Monday May 11, 2009 at 11:45 p.m. at his home.
He was born July 24, 1943 in Macomb, Illinois, the eldest child of Carl and Mary Irene (Chapman) McKinnon. He married
Diana Painter on February 25, 1962 in Terre Haute. After their marriage, they lived in Burlington, Iowa for two years. They moved to Terre Haute where they made their home for the remainder of their married
lives.
Mike attended elementary school at Gilead, a one-room country school. He graduated from La Harpe High School in 1961. He attended the Terre Haute United Methodist Church and the Pontoosuc Community Church. He was a volunteer fireman in Terre Haute for 25 years.
Mike retired in April from CSI Ltd., Burlington, Iowa, where he had worked for 19 years as the warehouse manager. Mike had also worked at Lehigh-Leopold in Burlington for 29 years. He rose through the ranks and was assistant foreman of the company when it closed. Mike also worked briefly at Housewright Lumber in La Harpe. Mike was known for his fine woodworking ability. Mike, Diana, Jack and Mary Keith McKinnon opened Cattails and Cornshucks in Terre Haute in 1984, where they showcased their crafts and talents. Mike’s hobbies included woodworking, gardening, dancing, and attending his children’s and grandchildren’s ball games.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Diana McKinnon, Terre Haute; three daughters: Kimberly (George) McKinnon Thompson, Roeland Park, KS; Deborah (PJ) McKinnon Funk, Independence, MO; Susan (David) Hobby, La Harpe; one brother, Jack McKinnon, Macomb; four sisters, Linda (Roger) Hughes, La Harpe; Carol (Bob) Sargeant, Blandinsville; Loretta (David) Anders, Kirkwood; Wendy (Jim) Olson, Blandinsville; four grandsons: JD and Travis Hobby, La Harpe; Michael and Adam Thompson, Roeland Park, KS; 4 nieces and 4 nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his stepfather, O.V. “Buster” Sights, and sister-in-law Mary Keith McKinnon.
Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday, May 15 at Banks and Beals Funeral Home in La Harpe with Pastors Paul Smith and Tom Wright officiating. Burial will be in the Terre Haute cemetery. Friends may call after 2:00 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Thursday. Memorials may be made to the Terre Haute United Methodist Church and the Terre Haute Fire Dept.
