Thomas Richard McNeill

Mr. Thomas Richard McNeill, 90, of Reedsport, Oregon, formerly of Lomax, Illinois passed away Sunday, April 5, 2009 at the Bay Area Hospital in Coos Bay, Oregon.

He was born January 3, 1919 in Gary Indiana the son of John W. and Harriett “Hattie” Williams McNeill. He was married to Marjorie Stooksberry in 1943. They later divorced. He then married Vona Worley. They were divorced.

His family moved to Lomax when he was a young child and he lived there the majority of his life. He served in the US Army during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was a beekeeper and sold honey and raised and sold watermelons.

He is survived by one daughter, Sonna Iddings of Gresham, Oregon, two sons, Steven McNeill of Reedsport, Oregon and Scott McNeill of Portland, Oregon, one granddaughter and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son and daughter, Tommy and Tiah McNeill, three brothers, Edgar, John and Delbert McNeill and his parents.Graveside services with Military Rites will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, April 16, 2009 at the Dallas City cemetery. There will be no visitation. Banks & Beals Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Kenneth Mead

Kenneth Marsden Mead, age 98 of Port Richey, Florida, died at 5:50 a.m. Sunday August 2, 2009 at his home. He was born August 9, 1910 in Gladstone, Illinois, the son of Clyde and Virgie Marsden Mead. He married Adaline Ruth Saben. She preceded him in death. In 1966, he married Teophile “Tillie” Bereika. She survives.

Mr. Mead was a civil engineer for Chicago Bridge and Iron Company. He traveled around the world and constructed water towers. He retired in 1970 and moved to Florida in 1972. He was of the Methodist faith.

Survivors include his wife, Tillie, three daughters - Wanda (Murgatroyd) Mead of Kerikeri, New Zealand, Marsda Conner of Oak Park, IL., and Diane (Bill) Connelly of Algonquin, IL., six grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday August 10, 2009 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst. Burial will follow in the Carman cemetery. No visitation is planned. Condolences may be left at banksandbeals.com.

Mary Jo Melvin

Mary Jo Melvin, age 73 of Stronghurst, Illinois died at 2:48 p.m. Tuesday June 16, 2009 in the Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab Center in Stronghurst. She was born October 9, 1935 in Olympia, Washington, the daughter of Harry and Mabel May Murphy Fain. On October 12, 1953, she married James Allen Melvin in Olympia. He preceded her in death on June 16, 2005.

Mrs. Melvin was a 1953 graduate of Olympia High School, Olympia, WA., and a 1967 graduate of Monmouth College, Monmouth, Illinois. In 1971, she received her Master’s Degree in Linguistics from Western Illinois University in Macomb. She had taught English at Monmouth High School and Union High School for several years. She had also worked at Admiral (Maytag) in Galesburg for twenty one years. She then taught at the Southern elementary and junior high, and most recently for the West Central Pre-K program in Stronghurst. She was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church in Stronghurst.

Survivors include one daughter - Roann M. (Daniel) Gron of Shorewood, IL., two sons - Lowell A. (Vickie) Melvin of Galesburg, IL., Cory D. (Staci) Melvin of Fort Wayne, IN., seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren, one sister - Eva Cole and one brother - Robert Fain, both of Olympia, WA. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one sister - Thomasine Andre, and one brother - Milo Oxford.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday June 20, 2009 in the Bethel Lutheran Church in Stronghurst with Rev. James Olsen officiating. Burial will be in the Monmouth City cemetery, Monmouth, IL. Friends may call after 2:00 p.m. Friday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst, where the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday. A memorial fund has been established for the West Central Pre-K Program.

Beulah E. Mohr

Mrs. Beulah Eileen Mohr, 89, of Quincy, IL, formerly of Dallas City, IL passed away Wednesday, August 26, 2009 at 9:18 A.M. at the Blessing Hospital in Quincy.

She was born February 29, 1920 at the family’s home in rural Colusa, Illinois, the only child of Kent and Kathryne Clark Dunham. On August 3, 1947 she married Alvin Donald Mohr at the First Christian Church in Dallas City. He preceded her in death on January 16, 2009.

She was a graduate of the Dallas City High School and Gem City Business College in Quincy. Beulah worked at the Sheaffer Pen Company in Fort Madison, Iowa for two years. She later decided to work in civil service and was prepared to move to Washington DC when the program was cancelled. She then worked for Dodd Printing Company in Fort Madison.

She was a housewife for the years that her husband farmed and when they purchased and operated the Dunham Oil Company and Conoco Service Station, both in Dallas City, she served as the office staff and bookkeeper. Beulah was a lifelong member of the Dallas City First Christian Church and was active in the Christian Women’s Fellowship. She enjoyed reading and doing all kinds of needlework and sewing. For a number of years she served as a 4-H leader. She was an excellent cook and canned and prepared much garden produce from Don’s garden. For a number of years she operated a ceramic shop and gave lessons in her home. She especially enjoyed the winters she and Don spent in Arizona after retirement.

Surviving are two daughters, Donna (and Don) McCain of Quincy and Bette Mohr of Galesburg, Illinois and two grandchildren, Deanna (Buster) McDaniel of Silex, Missouri and Donald (Nicole) McCain of Alamo Heights, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 29, 2009 at the Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Tony Newton officiating. Cremation rites will follow the funeral service, with private burial in the Harris cemetery near Dallas City at a later date. Visitation will be from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Banks & Beals. A memorial fund has been established for the Dallas City First Christian Church.

Don Mohr

Don Mohr, age 87 of Quincy, Illinois, formerly of Dallas City, Illinois died at 8:00 P.M. Friday January 16, 2009 at his home. He was born August 21, 1921 in Burlington, Iowa, the son of William H. And Elizabeth Hansen Mohr. On August 3, 1947, he married Beulah Dunham in Dallas City.

Mr. Mohr was a graduate of Dallas City High School and attended Greer Technical School in Chicago. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He then farmed near Dallas City and owned and operated the Dunham Oil Company in Dallas City, and the Conoco Service Station, also in Dallas City. He was a member of the Dallas City American Legion and was a member and elder of the Dallas City First Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife, two daughters - Donna (and Don) McCain of Quincy, IL., Bette Mohr of Galesburg, IL., and two grandchildren- Donald McCain of Gross Point Park, MI., and Deanna McDaniel of Silex, MO. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday January 20, 2009 in the Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Tony Newton officiating. Cremation rites will follow the funeral service, with private burial in the Harris cemetery near Dallas City at a later date. Visitation will be from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Banks & Beals. A memorial fund has been established for the Dallas City First Christian Church.

Ricky R. Northup

Mr. Ricky R. Northup, 42, of Dallas City, Illinois passed away Tuesday, October 27, 2009 at 12:50 A.M. at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington, Iowa.

He was born December 11, 1966 in Burlington, Iowa, the son of Harold and Judith A. Jones Northup.

He was a 1985 graduate of the Dallas City High School. He worked for G.E. Company in Burlington since 1992. He enjoyed attending car shows, riding his motorcycle and hunting and fishing. He had served as a coach for the Lomax little league baseball and taught the Hunters Safety Course.

He is survived by two children, Nathan Tyler Northup and Neely Anne Northup of Dallas City, his father Harold Northup Sr. one brother, Harold (Karen) Northup Jr., one niece, Natalie Northup and one nephew, Harold Northup all of Dallas City and his grandmother, Velva Jones of Carthage, Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Judith Northup, his paternal grandparents and maternal grandfather.

Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday, October 30, 2009 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Pastor Mark Nichols officiating. Burial will be in the Durham cemetery. Friends may call after 4:00 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Thursday. A memorial fund has been established for his children’s education.

Gary M. Olson

Mr. Gary M. Olson, 75, of Dallas City, Illinois passed away Thursday, March 5, 2009 7:05 A.M. at his home.

He was born November 2, 1933 in Dallas City, the son of Frank and Rose Betron Olson. On August 16, 1953 he married Betty L. Klossing in Dallas City.

Mr. Olson was a graduate of Dallas City High School and was a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the US Air Force from 1953 - 1957. He worked at the Dallas City Quarry as a heavy equipment operator for 42 years. He was a member of he Operators Union and a 50 year member of the Dallas City American Legion.

He is survived by his wife, two sons, Doug Olson of Fort Madison, Iowa and Greg (Malinda) Olson of Dallas City, one grandson, Jarod Olson of Dallas City, one brother, Andrew Olson of Dallas City and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one grandson, Jacob Olson, three brothers and five sisters.

Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Monday, March 9, 2009 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Father Tony Trosley officiating. Burial will be in the Harris cemetery near Dallas City. There will not be a formal visitation with the family present, but friends are welcome to stop at the funeral home between 2:00 and 6:00 P.M. Sunday. A memorial fund has been established for the Dallas City Veterans Memorial.

Irene Blanche Olson

Irene B. Olson, age 88 of Stronghurst, IL., died at 5:00 p.m. Sunday December 27, 2009 in the Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab Center in Stronghurst. She was born May 31, 1921 near Raritan, Illinois, the daughter of Ed and Ruth Link Waddill. She married Clarence Fields. They later divorced. In 1956, she married Benjamin Olson. He preceded her in death in August of 1979.

Mrs. Olson was a homemaker most of her life. Earlier, she had worked as a hairdresser and for the Sylvania Corporation in Burlington, Iowa. She was also a volunteer for many years at the LaMoine Christian Nursing in Roseville, Illinois, and was a member of the Stronghurst Christian Church.

Survivors include two sons - Larry (Janice) Fields of Stronghurst, Rick(Debbie) Olson of Allen, TX., four grandchildren- Debbie, Dee Ann, and Jerri Lynn Fields, Dana Lafary, and four great grandchildren- Paige and Ethan Lafary, and Logan and Hunter Fields. She was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin and one brother - Wayne Waddill.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday December 30, 2009 in the Stronghurst Christian Church with Pastor Ryan Loucks officiating. Burial will be in the Biggsville cemetery, Biggsville, Illinois. No Visitation is planned. A memorial fund has been established for the Stronghurst Christian Church.

Jack L. Parrish

Jack Lee Parrish age 75 of LaHarpe, Illinois died at 7:48 a.m. Monday March 9, 2009 in the Carthage Memorial Hospital in Carthage, Illinois. He was born January 6, 1934 near Blandinsville, Illinois, the son of Virgil and Doris Hensley Parrish. On June 27, 1953, he married Nancy Lu Painter.

Mr. Parrish was a graduate of LaHarpe High School. He had lived in the Blandinsville, Raritan, and Durham areas before moving to LaHarpe in 1974. He had farmed, and was a carpenter. He served as a volunteer fireman with the LaHarpe Fire Protection District for twenty eight years, and was an ambulance driver for the LaHarpe Ambulance Service for fifteen years. He was a member of the LaHarpe Union Church.

Survivors include his wife, one son - Jim (Diana) Parrish of LaHarpe, three daughters - Lucretia McPeak of LaHarpe, Brenda (David) Murphy of Burlington, Iowa, Betty Parrish of Bethany, Illinois, and three grandchildren - Amanda (Lee) Woods, Jackie Braun, and Christopher (Jessica) Braun, and one step grandchild - Jamie Murphy. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother - Gene Parrish.

Friends may call after 2:00 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday March 12, 2009 at Banks & Beals with Revs. Bruce Goettsche and Rick Goettsche officiating. Burial will be in the LaHarpe cemetery. Memorials have been established for the LaHarpe Fire Protection District, LaHarpe Ambulance Service, and Carthage Memorial Hospital.

LaVerne Parsons

Mrs. A. LaVerne Parsons, 98, of the Montebello Healthcare Center in Hamilton, Illinois, formerly of Dallas City, passed away Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at 9:20 P.M. at the Healthcare Center.

She was born October 2, 1910 in Webster, Illinois, the daughter of Chester and Ethel Conn Callihan. On September 25, 1937 she married Ross W. Parsons in Carthage, IL. He preceded her in death on November 21, 1971.

She attended grade school in Webster and graduated from the Fountain Green High School. She worked at the Carthage Memorial Hospital for 13 years and at McDonough District Hospital for 2 years. She lived in Webster until moving to Dallas City in 1971. She enjoyed gardening and watching baseball, both college and pro and college basketball.

She is survived by one daughter, Sandra Sutton of Dallas City, 6 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, one son. Ross B. Parsons and three sisters in infancy.

Graveside services will be held at 10:30 AM Monday, March 16, 2009 at the McConnell cemetery near Fountain Green with Rev. Larry Van Gundy officiating. Friends may call at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City, Sunday between 2:00 and 4:00 PM. A memorial fund has been established for the Webster Community Church or the McConnell cemetery.

DEAN “DUTCH” PATTERSON

Mr. Dean “Dutch” Patterson, 83, of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Tuesday, August 4, 2009 at his home.

He was born July 30, 1926 on the Patterson farm near LaCrosse, Illinois, the son of Earl and Mona McCleary Patterson. On June 2, 1960 he married Dolly I. Doyle in Denver, Colorado.

Mr. Patterson served in the US Army from 1944 - 1947 and was stationed in the Philippines and Japan. From 1948 - 1977 he co-owned and operated the FS Service station in LaHarpe. He then worked as a mechanic for 20 years at the LaHarpe Motor Sales Ford Dealership. He was a member of the LaHarpe American Legion and a 40 year member of the LaHarpe Fire Department where he served as fire chief from 1950 - 1969 at which time he was appointed fire marshall. He enjoyed camping and attended his grandchildren’s sporting events.

Surviving are his wife, two daughters, Monalisa (Tim) Graves of LaHarpe and Linda (Tim) Leinbach of Milan, Illinois, six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and one brother, Neal Patterson of LaHarpe.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, Becky Sue and two sisters, Nina Weeks and Wilda Lyons.

Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, August 8, 2009 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Rev. Larry Menschel officiating. Burial, with military rites, will be in the LaHarpe cemetery. Friends may call after 2:00 P.M. Friday at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Friday. A memorial fund has been established for the LaHarpe Fire Department or the LaHarpe Ambulance Service.
