Maude P. Fischer

Maude P. Fischer, 98, of Kewanee, Il. died at 12:05 A.M. Wednesday, December 28, 2005 at the Kewanee Hospital. She was born December 9, 1907 in Knoxville, Tn. the daughter of Robert and Laura L. Pierce. She moved to Kewanee with her family as a child. She was reared and educated here.

She married George L. Fischer. He preceded her in death in 1980. She was also preceded in death by three sons Harold, George Jr. and Jack V. Fischer, two brothers and three sisters.

Surviving is one daughter Shirley Fischer Wilson of Kewanee, eleven grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.

She was employed at the former Parkside Hotel in Kewanee, Minneapolis-Moline in the Quad Cities and retired from Kewanee Works Walworth Company. She enjoyed camping, gardening, sewing, fishing, crocheting, quilting and spending time with grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, December 31, 2005 at the Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, Il. Rev. Robert Miller of St. Peter’s Evangelical United Church of Christ will officiate. Burial will be in the Pleasant View cemetery, Kewanee, Il. Visitation will be from 9:00 A.M. to the time of services on Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed for the future new Kewanee Hospital.

Janet Rose Gish
05/24/1934 - 12/28/2005
Janet Rose Gish, 71, of Kewanee, Il. died at 12:30 A.M. Wednesday, December 28, 2005 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Il. She was born May 24, 1934 in Kewanee, Il. the daughter of Philip and Edna Jane (Beckner) Pyle. She was reared and educated in Kewanee. She married Gilbert R. “Gib” Gish on August 30, 1975 in Galva, Il. He died in 1979. Her parents and step mother Iantha Pyle also preceded her in death.

Surviving are two sons James (Doris) Welch and Bruce (Vivian) Welch, three daughters Toni (Bill) Wells, Edna (Marty) Greenhagen and Melissa (Nathaniel) Smith all of Kewanee. Eleven grandchildren Tina, Christina, Steven, Jeff, Jaci, Branden W., Matt, Branden O., Brookelynn, Benjamin and Karen, two great grandchildren Whitney and Alexander. Also surviving are three brothers Philip “Bud” (Bonnie) Pyle Jr., Jerry (Pat) Pyle and Tom (Marianne) Pyle all of Kewanee and two sisters Judy (William) Jones of Sheffield, Il. and Linda Rushing of Kent, Wa.

She had been employed at Boss Glove Company in Kewanee, Plano Molding Co. and later tended bar at the Foreign Service Club and Leo’s Illini Tap in Kewanee prior to retirement. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Kewanee and was an avid bowler in the Kewanee Women’s leagues in Kewanee.

Cremation rites will be accorded and graveside services will be at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, January 3, 2006 in the Pleasant View cemetery, Kewanee. There will be no visitation. A memorial fund has been established and contributions may be left at the funeral home.

Dorothy M. Glidden
10/06/1914 - 12/24/2005
Dorothy M. Glidden, 91, of Peoria, Il and formerly of Kewanee, Il. and Palm Beach, Fl. died at 1:30 A.M. Saturday, December 24, 2005 at her home in Peoria. She was born October 6, 1914 in Kewanee, Ill the daughter of Fred L. and Ethel (Ashley) Ponte. She attended Kewanee schools and graduated from Western Illinois University. She taught French and English for four years in Putnam and Jacksonville, Il. She married Robert L. Glidden on August 30, 1941 in Kewanee. He preceded her in death in 1992. Her parents, a daughter Gail Ann Haynes in 2003 and a sister Marie Alm also preceded her in death.

Surviving are two daughters Nancy (Henry) Hester of Palm Desert, Ca. and Mary (Noah) Williams of Peoria, Il. One grandson Robert A. Haynes of Sharpsburg, Georgia. Her son-in-law Rodney Haynes also of Sharpsburg. Sister-in-law Kathryn Glidden of Mesa, Az. Also surviving are nephews James G. (Lois) Richmond, Darien, Il. Robert D. (Paula) Richmond of Carlsbad, Ca. and Brian R. (Dianna) Alm of Rock Island, Il.

While residing in Kewanee she was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Midland Country Club, Ladies Reading Club, and PEO Chapter CS. She had served as treasurer of the United Fund, served on the YMCA Board of Directors and the Civic Nurse Board.

As a resident of Palm Beach, Florida she was a member of the Lost Tree Club, Loxahatchee Club, Old Port Cove Yacht Club, The City Club of Palm Beach, Palm Beach Literary Society and was active in the Arthritis Foundation. She relocated to Peoria, Il. in 2002.

She enjoyed needlepoint, golf, tennis, bridge and thoroughbred racing.

Private Graveside services will be at 11:00 A.M. Friday, December 30, 2005 in the Pleasant View cemetery, Kewanee, Il. Dan Craig will officiate. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be directed to the Methodist Hospice Services, 221 NE Glen Oak Ave., Peoria, Il. 61636-0001

Arlene McCarty
03/23/1916 - 12/18/2005
Arlene McCarty, 89, of Kewanee, Il. died at 8:45 P.M. Sunday, December 18, 2005 at Kewanee Care Home. She was born March 23, 1916 on a farm near Kewanee, the daughter of Truman C. and Almeda E. (Pask) Taylor. She married Owen K. McCarty in Tuscon, Az. He preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by two sisters Evelyn Mayes and Bernice Lindgren. Surviving are two nieces Marvel McKearn of Beloit, Wi. and Nancy Lindgren of Atkinson, Il. along with other nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews and special friend and caregiver Rose Rasmussen of Kewanee.

She had been employed at the former Walworth Co. Office and later worked with her husband in his Midwestern Retreaders business prior to her retirement.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Kewanee and enjoyed reading and traveling.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 P.M. Thursday, December 22, 2005 at the Schueneman-Tumbleson funeral home, Kewanee, Il. Rev. Dr. Kevin Siscoe of the First Baptist Church, Kewanee, will officiate. Burial will be in the Pleasant View cemetery, Kewanee. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services on Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Mildred E. VanDeVelde

Mildred E. VanDeVelde, 93, of Kewanee, Il. died at 6:00 A.M. Sunday, December 18, 2005 at Proctor Hospital in Peoria, Il. She was born January 10, 1911 in Kewanee the daughter of Martin and Alice (Penosky) Bystry. She was reared and educated in Kewanee. She married Jacob “Jake” VanDeVelde October 4, 1933 in Kewanee. He died December 18, 1974. She was also preceded in death by an infant daughter Janice Jean, six brothers Paul, Matthew, Frank, Jack, Don and Paul Jr. and four sisters Mary, Clara, Sophie and Genevieve.

Surviving are nieces and nephews. She had been employed at Boss Glove Co. and later was a sales clerk at the former Penney’s and Carp’s stores in Kewanee. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Kewanee. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, gardening and flowers.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, December 22, 2005 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Kewanee. Rev. James Pallardy will officiate. Burial will be in the Mount Olivet cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:45 A.M. at the Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee. Memorials may be directed to St. Mary’s Catholic Church or the charity of the donor’s choice.

Frances Mae Berry

Frances Mae Berry, 89, of Kewanee, Il. died at 6:30 P.M. Wednesday, December 14, 2005 at her home. She was born May 10, 1916 in Archer, Iowa the daughter of Walter and Clare (Kaiser) Wilson.

The family moved to Sioux Falls, S.D. where she was reared and educated. She married 1st Lieutenant Paul E. Berry July 2, 1943 at the Army Airbase in Sioux Falls. He survives along with three sons Brad (Susie) Berry of Neponset, Il., Dennis (Margo) Berry and Gene (Diane) Berry all of Kewanee. One daughter Candice (George) Parks of Memphis, Tn. One grandson Arick Parks of Memphis. Two great grandchildren Madeline and Macy also of Memphis. Also surviving is one sister Rosemary Sigler of Sioux Falls, S.D.

Her parents and stepmother Helen preceded her in death.

A homemaker, Frances was a member of the First Baptist Church of Kewanee. She was well known for her painting and had won numerous awards. She also enjoyed singing and music, gardening and flowers.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, December 17, 2005 at the Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home in Kewanee. Rev. Dr. Kevin Siscoe of the First Baptist Church will officiate.

Cremation rites will be accorded following the services on Saturday and private family inurnment will be at a later date. Visitation is from 6-8 P.M. Friday, December 16th at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the First Baptist Church or the Kewanee Hospital Hospice.

Dora Shields

Dora Shields, 86, of Toulon Health Care Center and formerly of Kewanee and Galva died at 5:50 A.M. Tuesday, December 6, 2005 at the center. She was born April 11, 1919 in Kewanee the daughter of Carl and Edla (Hedlund) Norbo. She was reared and educated in Kewanee. She married Robert. M. Shields July 3, 1937 in Kewanee. She and her husband farmed for many years in Burns Twp. They moved to Galva in 1958 where they owned and operated Phyl’s Drive In. He died in 1962. She was also preceded in death by one son John R. Shields, two sisters Ruth VanVooren and Rose Shinkevich and three brothers George, Ernie and Bob Norbo.

Surviving is one son Thomas L. (Gail) Shields of Morton, Il. Three daughters Peggy Mattman and Kathi “Crash” both of Kewanee and Sandra K. (Robert) Miles of Edgewater Park, New Jersey. Thirteen grandchildren and twenty three great grandchildren.

She was a member of the Burns Grange, Flemish American Club and Ladies Card Club. Dora was well known as the “Pie Lady” having served as the dining room manager at the Elk’s Club in Kewanee, and later owning and operating Pie un Stuff in Bishop Hill and Kewanee and later Pandora’s in Kewanee. She was featured for her pie baking in Midwest Living magazine. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, going to the riverboat, horse racing and playing cards.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. Friday, December 9, 2005 at the Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee. A rosary will be recited at 9:30 A.M. Friday where visitation will follow until the time of services. Burial will be in the Mount Olivet cemetery, Kewanee, Il. Memorials may be directed to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Nicholas P. “Nick” Caras
12/07/1930 - 12/05/2005
Nicholas P. “Nick” Caras, 74, of Osprey, Fl. and formerly of Kewanee, Il. died Monday, December 5, 2005 in a Venice, Fl. Hospital.

He was born December 7, 1930 in Geneseo, Il. the son Peter and Georgia (Anastopoulos) Caras. His parents owned and operated the DeLuxe Confectionary in Kewanee.

He graduated from Kewanee High School in 1950. He attended Lincoln Junior College in Lincoln, Il. and graduated in 1952. While in Kewanee he was employed by Boss Manufacturing Co. He moved to Rock Island where he worked in sales with Karmelkorn Shoppes and since moving to Florida with Generation Salon Services for the past 10 years.

He married Nancy Bonne in August of 1980. She survives along with one daughter Corrine G. (Steve) Smith of Rock Island, Il. and one step daughter Bridget (Steve) Smith of Edwardsville, Il. one son Peter G. Caras of Rock Island, Il. and one stepson Brian Bonne of Hersher, Il. Two sisters Christina (Martin) Christon of Greendale, Wi. and Emily Caras of Kewanee, Il. Four grandchildren Dillon, Jenna, Conner and Claire. He was preceded in death by his parents.

He was a member of St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church in Sarasota, Fl.

Cremation rites were accorded and a memorial service will be at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, December 13, 2005 at St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Rock Island, Il. Rev. Leo Gavrilos will officiate. There is no visitation.

Private family Inurnment will be in the Pleasant View cemetery, Kewanee, Il. Memorials may be directed to American Heart Association, P.O. Box 21475, St. Petersburg, Fl. 33742 or St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church, 7671 Lockwood Ridge Rd., Sarasota, Fl. 34243. The Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral in Kewanee is in charge of local arrangements. Arrangements in Sarasota, Florida are by the Packer Funeral Home.

M. Eleanor Anderson

M. Eleanor Anderson, 84, of Bellevue, Il. and formerly of Kewanee, Il. died at 4:11 P.M. Friday, July 29, 2005 at Bellwood Nursing Home in Bellevue. She was born February 2, 1921 in Kewanee the daughter of J. Lester and Helen (Miller) Alderman. She graduated from Kewanee High School in 1939. She married Raymond W. Anderson December 20, 1941 in Kewanee. He died November 14, 1995. Her parents, one sister Cora Jane Craine, a daughter Rebecca and one grandchild preceded her in death.

Surviving is a son James David (and Sharon) Anderson, Sr. of Bellevue. Five grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren and one sister Peg Pitney of Scottsdale, Az.

She was a member of the First Christian Church of Kewanee, Harmony Chapter #43 Order of Eastern Star and the Rebecca Lodge. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, reading and spending time with her family.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 P.M. Wednesday, August 3, 2005 at the Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, Il. Brian Giese of the First Christian Church will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Memory Gardens, rural Kewanee. Visitation will be from noon to the time of services on Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to First Christian Church.
