Fern G. Brownlee, 93, of Kewanee, Il. and formerly of Neponset died at 10:27 P.M. Wednesday, April 12, 2006 at Kewanee Hospital. She was born April 15, 1912 in Ramey, Mn. The daughter of George W. and Eleanor Golda (Wilcox) Allen. Fern married
Victor Oliver Olson on June 25, 1928 in Little Falls, Mn. She married
Schuyler P. Brownlee of Neponset on October 6, 1952. He died in 1988. Surviving are three children Mrs. Shirley A. Roberson of Neponset, Neil R. (Patricia) Olson of Dunlap, Il. and Janice K. (Stephen) Wood of Mendota, Il., thirteen grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren, twelve great-great grandchildren and seventeen step grand children.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sons Clyde E. and Bruce A. Olson, two brothers Clifford H. and Calvin L. Allen, two sisters Ruth LaRose and Iris Sterr and most recently a granddaughter Debra Olson Lytle.
Fern was a member of the Methodist Church of Neponset. She was an accomplished quilter and made many quilts for family members. She and husband Schuyler bred and raised Appaloosa Horses for many years on the farm west of Neponset. She also raised registered cocker spaniels and sold them nationwide. She also enjoyed gardening and bowling.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, April 15, 2006 at Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, Il. Rev. Dan Craig officiating. Burial will be in the Gilson cemetery. Visitation is two hours prior to the services on Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Buda Rescue Squad.
Phyllis Elaine Behnke

Phyllis Elaine Behnke, 83, of Kewanee, Il. died at 4:30 A.M. Friday, April 21, 2006 at Courtyard Estates in Kewanee where she resided. She was born February 10, 1923 in Galva, Il. the daughter of Edward and Florence (Shurley) Swanson. She graduated from Galva High School in 1940. She married
Robert R. Behnke June 8, 1941 in Galva, Il. He died February 21, 2002. She was also preceded in death by her parents and a daughter Sondra Reeves.
Surviving is a son Edward (Rebecca) Behnke of Kewanee, a daughter Jane (Bill) Wingo of The Woodlands, Texas, son-in-law David Reeves of Kewanee, seven grandsons, two granddaughters and ten great grandchildren.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Kewanee where she had taught the third grade Sunday school class and assisted with Bible School. She was a member of the church’s WAWTABT Sunday School class. She enjoyed reading and doing jigsaw puzzles.
Funeral services will be at 11 A.M. Monday, April 24, 2006 at First Baptist Church, Kewanee, Il. Rev. Dr. Kevin Siscoe will officiate. Burial will be in the Pleasant View cemetery, Kewanee, Il. Visitation will be from 2-4 P.M. Sunday, April 23rd at the Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, Il.

Eldon Q Johnson

Eldon Q. Johnson, 87, of Pensacola, Fl. and formerly of Kewanee, Il. died at 7:00 A.M. Saturday, April 22, 2006 at Encore Senior Village in Pensacola. He was born February 1, 1919 in Kewanee the son of Martin and Mary (Millen) Johnson (but he always claimed he was 26.) He graduated from Kewanee High School and received a degree in broadcasting from Bradley University in Peoria, Il.
He married
Ruth Reiff April 25, 1959. She preceded him in death in 1992.
Surviving is a daughter Mary Rue Ell “Sis” (Mrs. David) Richeson of Pensacola, two step sons Dwight “Pete” (Sandy) Reiff of Kewanee, Il., Ted (Maurine) Reiff of St. Augustine, Fl., nine grandchildren and seven great–grandchildren.
Eldon was employed at WKEI Radio Station in Kewanee and many may remember his show “Records for you with Eldon Q.” He was a member of the Elks Club and the First United Methodist Church of Kewanee and later the First United Methodist Church of LaFayette, Il.. He moved to Florida in 1965 after retirement from radio.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, April 29, 2006 at the Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, Il. Rev. K. Bruce Rushing will officiate. Burial will be in the Pleasant View cemetery, Kewanee. Visitation will be from 11:30 A.M. until the time of services on Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the charity of the donor’s choice.
Eldon’s request was that everyone wears bright colors for the funeral and that his radio sign off be shared once more… “This is Eldon Q. signing off. May your license plates expire before you do, and I’ll see you soon Sissy.”
Donald “Don” E Francis

Donald E. “Don” Francis, 77, of Kewanee, Il. died at 7:35 P.M. Sunday, April 23, 2006 at Royal Oaks Care Center in Kewanee. He was born August 22, 1928 in Kewanee the son of Lester and Audrey (Nuding) Francis. He graduated from Kewanee High School in 1946. He married
Ann Cokich on September 17, 1950 in Kewanee. She survives along with two sons Brett Francis of Chino Valley, Az and Kirk (Donna) Francis of Hawthorn Woods, Il., five grandchildren Ashley and Brittany of Prescott Valley, Az., Austin and Mackenzie of Arlington Heights, Il. and Greta of Hawthorn Woods, Il., one sister Pat Lowden of Oceanside, Ca., three nephews and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and several aunts and uncles.
He served in the US Navy from 1946-1949. He retired after twenty years from the Kewanee Fire Department having served as Fire Chief during his tenure with the department. He was a member of the Kewanee VFW Post 8078, Kewanee Moose Lodge and Kewanee Masonic Lodge #159 A.F. & A.M. He enjoyed Harley Davidson motorcycles and old cars.
Private graveside services will be held on Friday, April 28th in Pleasant View cemetery, Kewanee. Rev. Jerry Rafalko will officiate. There will be no visitation. Military honors will be accorded by the Kewanee Veterans Council and an honor guard will be provided by the Kewanee Fire Dept.
Memorials may be directed to the Kewanee Fire Dept. The Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, Il. is in charge of arrangements.
Franklin V Carey

Franklin V. Carey, 87, of Toulon, Il. and formerly of Morton, Il. died at 7:20 A.M. Monday, April 24, 2006 at Toulon Health Care Center. He was born September 16, 1918 in McLeansboro, Il. the son of Willie and Maggie (Taylor) Carey. He married
Anna May Barker December 3, 1939 in McLeansboro. She preceded him in death in 2002. He was also preceded in death by five brothers and four sisters.
Surviving are four sons, Gary (Linda) Carey of Osceola, Il., Donald Carey of Kewanee, Il., George (Linda) Carey of Rock Falls, Il., Bryon (Melissa) Carey of Tulsa, Ok., two daughters Pat Carey of Morton, Il. and Vonnie (Tom) Kearns of Arnold, Ca. Seven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and two sisters Fern Thomas of Mt. Vernon, Il. and Mary McWhiter of Az.
He helped build runways at Chanute Air Force Base. He worked at Northwestern Steel and Wire in Sterling, Il., Penny’s Grocery Store in Elmwood, Il. He owned several restaurants in Elmwood and for thirty years was employed at Caterpillar in Peoria retiring in 1982 as a Final Inspector. He was a life member of Horeb Masonic Lodge #363, the Scottish Rite Valley of Peoria and U.A.W. Local 974.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. Friday, April 28, 2006 at the Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, Il. Rev. Jerry Rafalko will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens, Kewanee, Il. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services on Friday at the funeral home. Elizabeth F. “Betty” Stewart, 92, of Kewanee, Il. died Wednesday, April 26, 2006 at Kewanee Care Home. She was born February 8, 1914 in Kewanee the daughter of Michael and Frances (Piwowarczyk) Moraski. She attended the former St. Stanislaus School in Kewanee. She married
Ralph B. Stewart in Kewanee. She was preceded in death by one son Benjamin Stewart in 2005 and four sisters Anna, Mary, Louise, Pauline and four brothers John, Joseph, Mack and Leo. Surviving are five sons Atty. William “Bill (Marjabelle) Stewart and Bryan J. Stewart of Kewanee, Robert M. Stewart of Big Bear, Ca., Bernard V. (Rosie) Stewart of Phoenix, Az., Bruce E. (Patricia) Stewart of San Clemente, Ca., one daughter Elizabeth L. Stewart of Galesburg, Il., eleven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
Betty was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Kewanee and its Altar and Rosary Society, Friends of Johnson Park and the Flemish American Club. She enjoyed bowling on the Peoples Cleaners team, fishing and dancing.
Cremation rites were accorded and a memorial mass will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, May 13, 2006 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. Fr. Steven Bird will officiate. Inurnment will be in the Mount Olivet cemetery, Kewanee. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be directed to St. Francis of Assisi Church. Clarence William Witte

Clarence William Witte, 85, of Kewanee, Il. died at 7:44 P.M. Saturday, April 29, 2006 at Kewanee Care Home. He was born October 4, 1920 in Burns Twp, Henry County the son of Edward and Julia (Girkin) Witte. He attended Cosner Grade School and later earned his GED from Wethersfield High School.
He got his pilots license at age 18 and maintained it throughout his life. He attended and received his Aircraft A & P from the Technical Institute in California in 1942. He was a Navy Veteran of WWII from 1943 to the end of the war.
He received the Charles Taylor Mechanics Award from the FAA for over 50 years of continuous service as an aircraft mechanic. He opened Air Energy Service in Neponset in 1986. There he developed and manufactured wing gas tanks for the Piper airplanes. He had developed many STC projects during this time.
He was a life member of the Experimental Aircraft Association chapter #495. He was a charter member of EAA chapter #410 Rock Falls, Il. He was employed at Pearson Bros. in Galva until his retirement. He led many informational seminars on aircraft engine overhaul, fabric covering and welding for his aviation chapter. In his younger years he worked as an aerial crop sprayer, totaling several thousand hours of enjoyable but challenging hours of flight time. As a child, he was baptized in the Lutheran Faith.
He married
Shirley Edwards September 11, 1948 in Kewanee. She survives along with two daughters Lori (Kevin) King of El Cajon, Ca. and Diane Johnson of Santee, Ca., one grandchild Leanne (John) Wyszkowski of Watertown, Wi. and three great grandchildren Adam, Harley and Allissa nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by six brothers and one sister.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. Friday May 5, 2006 at the Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, Il. Rev. Dr. Kevin Siscoe and Fr. Jerry Rafalko will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Memory Gardens, rural Kewanee where Military honors will be accorded by the Kewanee Veterans Council. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services on Friday at the funeral home. Mary E. Engels, 96, of Kewanee, Il. died at 6:00 A.M. Thursday, July 20, 2006 at the home of her daughter. She was born October 20, 1909 in Annawan Il. the daughter of Phil and Julia (VanBruggen) VanDeGenachte. She attended school in Annawan. She married
August Engels December 28, 1928 in Annawan, Il. He preceded her in death in 1959. She was also preceded in death by two sons Achiel and Richard and three brothers.
Surviving is a daughter Laura (Mrs. Richard) Kubiak of Kewanee, four sons Marvin (Joann) Engels of Texarkana, Tx. Vernon (Eileen) Engels of Galva and David (Diane) Engels of Visalia, Ca., nineteen grandchildren, thirty two great grandchildren and ten great great grandchildren.
She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Kewanee. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting and spending time with her grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 A.M. Monday, July 24, 2006 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Kewanee. Rev. Steven Bird will officiate. Burial will be in the Mount Olivet cemetery, Kewanee. Visitation will be from 6-8 P.M. Sunday, July 23, 2006 at the Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, Il. where the rosary will be recited at 6:00 P.M. Memorials may be directed to her church or the Kewanee Hospital Hospice.

Theresa V. Peterson, 90, of Joliet, Il. and formerly of Kewanee, died Sunday July 23, 2006 at her home. She was born October 22, 1915 in Burlington, Il. the daughter of Alphonse “Elvis” and Mary (Sester) Fortman. She was reared and educated in Kewanee having attended Visitation School through the 8th grade and graduated from Kewanee High School in 1933. She married
William V. Peterson February 20, 1939 in Davenport, Ia. He preceded her in death in 1985. She was also preceded by one brother Leonard Fortman and one sister Helen Robinson.
Surviving is one daughter Marilyn K. Schumacher of Joliet, one grandson Todd (Debbie) Schumacher of Coal City, one granddaughter Lisa (Richard) Horwath of Joliet, seven great grandchildren Tara, Heather, Jacob, Heather, Brian, Amy, Julie and one great-great granddaughter Emily. Also surviving is one sister Lucille (Bill) Goard of Lake of the Ozarks, Mo., numerous nieces and nephews.
She was a resident of Joliet for the past 30 years. She was a member of St. Jude’s Catholic Church in Joliet and a former member of Visitation Catholic Church in Kewanee.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. Friday, July 28, 2006 at the Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, Il. Rev. Johnston Kitunzi will officiate. Burial will be in the Mount Olivet cemetery, Kewanee. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services on Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to Joliet Hospice.

Helen E. Klein, 90, of Brunswick, Ga. And formerly of Kewanee, Il. died Sunday July 23, 2006 in Brunswick. She was born August 26, 1915 in Memphis, Tn. the daughter of Edward and Julia (Johnson) Sullivan. She married
L. Edward “Doc” Klein on September 3, 1939 in St. Louis Mo. He preceded her in death in 1983. She was also preceded in death by two brothers and one sister. Surviving is a daughter Karyl Peterson and a son Edward “Ed” (Faye) Klein all of Brunswick, three grandsons Ian Klein, Darin and Curt Harlow and one great granddaughter Paige Harlow.
She had been employed at Boss Glove Co. and Hyster Co. in Kewanee prior to her retirement in 1978. She moved to Brunswick in 1995.
While in Kewanee, she was a member of the First Baptist Church where she assisted with “Kids Club” and Harmony Chapter #43 Order of Eastern Star.
Funeral services will be at 4:00 P.M. Friday, July 28, 2006 at the Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home in Kewanee. Rev. Dan Craig will officiate. Burial will be private in Evergreen Memorial Gardens, rural Kewanee. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services on Friday at the funeral home.
