John (Johnny) Gaydos

John (Johnny) Gaydos 90 of Kewanee died 1:15am Sunday May 1, 2005 at Kewanee Hospital. He was born October 19, 1914 in Kewanee son of Charles and Barbara Michalik Gaydos. He was reared and educated in Kewanee schools, he was a veteran of the Army Air Force during World War II, serving in England. He married Dorothy Reed February 8, 1947 in Kewanee, she preceded him in death May 18, 1987, as well as one brother Joseph.

He is survived by one brother Donald (Patricia) Gaydos of East Moline Il, two sisters Angela Dellaert of Dubuque Iowa, and Mrs. Julius (Mary) Kerckhove of East Moline Il.

He worked for many years at the Kewanee Boiler Co. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Kewanee. He was a member of the VFW Post #8078 of Kewanee, the Flemish American Club of Kewanee. He enjoyed golfing, and was a member of the Baker Park Golfing Hall of fame, and had helped with the Seniors Golf Tournament at Baker Park. He also enjoyed making small crafts.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 am Wednesday May 4, 2005 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Chris Haake officiating. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm Tuesday May 3, 2005 at Schueneman & Tumbleson funeral home, with a Rosary at 7:00pm. Burial will be in the Mount Olivet cemetery Kewanee, where Military Rites will be accorded by the Kewanee Veterans Council. Memorials to the Baker Park Memorial golf fund.

Arthur A. “Art” Vereecke
11/16/1917 - 04/24/2005
Arthur A. “Art” Vereecke, 87, of Kewanee, Il., died at 6:45 A.M. Sunday, April 24, 2005 at Kewanee Care Home. He was born November 16, 1917 in Kewanee, Il. the son of Camiel and Melanie (DeJaeger) Vereecke. He attended Kewanee High School. He served in the Army during WWII in New Guinea, the Southern Philippines and Luzon. He received four bronze battle stars.

He married Margaret Lockery November 16, 1946 in Kewanee. She survives along with one son Jim Vereecke of Larkspur, California.

His parents, two brothers William and Henry and three sisters Ann, Marie and Louise preceded him in death.

He was employed for 31 years at Boswell Distributing in Kewanee retiring in 1979. He was a member of Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Kewanee and was a life member of Kewanee VFW Post 8078. He enjoyed gardening, flowers and the Yankee’s.

A mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 A.M. Thursday at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Kewanee celebrated by Rev. Fredi Gomez Torres. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery where military honors will be accorded by the Kewanee Veterans Council. Visitation will be on hour prior to the mass on Thursday at St. Francis of Assisi Church. Memorials may be directed to his church or the Leukemia Foundation.

Richard Charles “Rick" Boardman

Richard Charles “Rick” Boardman, 52, of Houston, Texas and formerly of Kewanee, Il. died Tuesday, April 19, 2005 in Houston, Tx.

He was born August 13, 1952 in Kewanee, Il. the son of Walter H. and Kathryn L. (Woods) Boardman. He attended Wethersfield Schools. He served in the US Air Force, where he became a cooling and refrigeration specialist. After serving in the military he was an equipment installer for Hardees, Steak and Shake, settling in Houston, Texas where he worked for J & S Refrigeration before starting a commercial and industrial refrigeration, air conditioning and heating business of his own.

Richard is survived by his mother Kathryn L. Ahlgren of Kewanee, two brothers Robert Boardman of Silvis, Il. and William (Donna) Boardman of Kewanee. Four nephews James, Donald, David and Ty Boardman and one niece Heidi Boardman.

His father, maternal grandparents John and Eva (Weis) Woods of Tiskilwa, Il. and paternal grandparents Orland and Mary (Jackson) Boardman of Kewanee preceded him in death.

Richard cherished spending time with his family and friends. He loved living in Texas. He greatly enjoyed boating, trips, photography, music and watching sports events.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, April 26, 2005 at the Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, Il. Rev. K. Bruce Rushing of the First United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View cemetery, Kewanee where military honors will be accorded by the Kewanee Veterans Council. Visitation will be from 6-8 P.M. Monday at the funeral home.

Jennie Hoogerwerf
03/20/1919 - 04/19/2005
Jennie Hoogerwerf, 86, of Kewanee, Il. died at 12:30 P.M. Tuesday, April 19, 2005 at Kewanee Hospital. She was born March 20, 1919 in Toluca, Il. the daughter of Leo and Stella (Germanovich) Suik. She was reared and educated in Kewanee.

She married Harley Hoogerwerf December 17, 1949 in Kewanee, Il. He died April 25, 1974. Her parents, two brothers Mike and Steve Suik and a sister-in-law Charlotte Suik also preceded her in death.

Surviving is a son Michael (Betty) Hoogerwerf of Aurora, Il. One step grandson Jason (Luz) Underwood and three step great grandchildren Jackie, Kaylee and Ivan. Two sisters Mrs. Minnie Snieski and Ann (Mrs. Don) Francis of Kewanee, two sisters- in-law Judy Hoogerwerf and Lois Suik, several nephews and one niece.

She had been employed at the former Kewanee Works Walworth Co. and later worked in the cafeteria at Kewanee High School. She was a member of the Kewanee Senior Citizen Center and enjoyed going on their bus trips. She also enjoyed playing Bunko and spending time with her family.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. Friday, April 22, 2005 at the Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, Il. Rev. Jerry Rafalko will officiate. Burial will be in the Mount Olivet cemetery, Kewanee. Memorials may be directed to the Kewanee Senior Center.

Jack L. Burnett
10/26/1959 - 04/17/2005
Jack L. Burnett, 45, of Oxford, Alabama and formerly of Galva, Il. died April 17, 2005 at the Regional Medical Center in Anniston, Alabama after a brief illness. He was born October 26, 1959 in Kewanee, Il. the son of Jack and JoAnn Burnett. He graduated from Galva High School and Illinois State University and was currently furthering his degree in Alabama.

Surviving is his loving companion Harriet Dew and her children Alex and Sarah of Oxford, Alabama and three sisters Kathy (Norm) Mihm of Phoenix, Az., Tana (Pete) Cali and Debbie (David) Spets both of Kewanee. Nieces and nephews Mike and Danny Mihm, Patrick and Brandy Lee and Jackie, John David and Jennifer Spets.

His parents preceded him in death. He enjoyed College basketball, fishing, NASCAR and spending time with his family.

A Memorial service will be at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, April 23, 2005 at the Schueneman-Tumbleson funeral home, Kewanee, Il. Pastor Dan Craig will officiate. Inurnment will be in the Galva City cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services on Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the American Diabetes Association.

Anne C. Hammerschmidt

Anne C. Hammerschmidt, 94, of Hoffman Estates, Il. and formerly of Kewanee, Il. died Sunday, April 17, 2005 at Our Lady of Resurrection Hospital in Chicago.

She was born August 7, 1910 in Kewanee, Il the daughter of Joseph and Selma (Prensunkas) Bagdonas.

She married Henry Hammerschmidt. He died in 1978. She was also preceded in death by two brothers William and Paul and two sisters Bernice and Mary.

Surviving is a son Fredrick (Jeanette) Hammerschmidt of Chicago, Il. Three daughters Cynthia (Ralph) Weiser of Chicago, Il. JoAnn Martino of Hoffman Estates and Margo (Al) Peterson of Long Beach, Ca.

Three grandchildren Steven, Selena and Erica and one sister Marcella Hays of Prophetstown, Il.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Kewanee. She had been employed at U.S. Gypsum as a file clerk. She enjoyed animals.

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Thursday, April 21, 2005 at the Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, Il. Rev. Fredi Gomez Torres will officiate. Burial will be in the Mount Olivet cemetery, Kewanee, Il. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services on Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Kewanee Animal Shelter.

Raymond D. VanMeltebeck, Jr.
09/15/1931 - 04/15/2005
Raymond D. VanMeltebeck, Jr.,73, of Kewanee, Il. died at 4:30 A.M., Friday, April 15, 2005 at Heartland Health Care Center in Galesburg, Il.

He was born September 15, 1931 in Kewanee the son of Raymond and Clara (Marten) VanMeltebeck, Sr. He graduated from Kewanee High School with perfect attendance in 1949. He served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict.

He married Shirley Vermiere September 29, 1956 in Sheffield, Il. She died April 4, 1977. He married Velma Mae Owens April 8, 1983 in Kewanee. She died July 22, 2003. He was also preceded in death by his parents.

Surviving is a sister Elizabeth (Mrs. Kenneth) Taylor of Big Bear, California and one brother Martin E. VanMeltebeck of Kewanee. One nephew Michael and one niece Michelle and several great nieces and nephews all of California.

He was employed at Kewanee Hyster Company for many years retiring as a supervisor in the assembly department.

Ray was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Kewanee. He was a 3rd and 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Santa Maria Council #734. He was a member and Past Commander of Kewanee VFW Post 8078, past 8th District Commander of the Illinois VFW and a member of the Kewanee Veterans Council. He was a member of Kewanee American Legion Post #31 for over 51 years and served as commander in 1964. He was also a member of the Kewanee Moose Lodge. He had been a percussionist in the Kewanee Black Knights Drum and Bugle Corp.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9:30 A.M. Tuesday, April 19, 2005 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Kewanee. Rev. Chris Haake will officiate.

Burial will be in the Mount Olivet Cemtery, Kewanee, Il. Msgr. Burke Addition where military honors will be accorded by the Kewanee Veterans Council. Visitation will be from 6-8 P.M. Monday, April 18, 2005 at Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, Il.

Memorials may be directed to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Mildred M. Eckhardt
09/20/1914 - 04/02/2005
Mildred M. Eckhardt 90 of Kewanee died 5:20pm Saturday April 2, 2005 at Kewanee Care Home. She was born September 20, 1914 in Reynolds Il. daughter of Charles and Milda (Osborne ) Jones Sr. She was educated in the Rock Island Schools, and had worked at the Rock Island Arsenal during World War II in the Field Service Office.

She married Paul W. Eckhardt May 29, 1935 in Reynolds Il, he preceded her in death in January of 1998, as well as a sister Grace, and 1 brother Clarence.

She is survived by one son Martin L. Eckhardt of Galesburg Illinois. She is also survived by two sisters Dorothy Earp of Durant Iowa, and Ruth Harkey of Rock Island Il. One brother survives Charles Jones Jr. of Daytona Beach Florida, and nieces and nephews.

She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Kewanee. She enjoyed playing cards, bridge, jigsaw puzzles, quilting, and traveling. She also enjoyed going to see her son, Martin compete in his Special Olympics.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday April 6, 2005 at St. Pauls Lutheran Church with the Rev. Burnell Eckardt officiating. Visitation will be from 9:30 am Wednesday until services at the Church. Burial will be in the Pleasant View cemetery Kewanee, Il. Memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Kewanee.

Schueneman & Tumbleson funeral home of Kewanee is in charge of arrangements.
