Raymond L Whetstone

Raymond L. Whetstone, 78, of Kewanee, Il. died at 8:30 P.M. Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at his home.

Ray was born September 30, 1932 in Perham, Mn. the son of John F. and Ella (Ouart) Whetstone. When he was six weeks old the family moved to Galva and at age 4 to Kewanee. He was reared and educated here.

Ray served as a Corporal in the Army during the Korean War working in a generator shop.

He married Vallerie Foley October 5, 1952 in the First Baptist Church of Kewanee. She survives along with one son Steven (Pamela) Whetstone of Piedmont, Ok., four daughters Katherine (Mike) Hallock of Mexico, Mo., Roseanne (William) Hansen of Kewanee, Elizabeth (Monty) Power of Stephenville, Tx. Christine (Rick) Moon of Kewanee, twelve grand children, two step grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers LeRoy, Edward, Donald and Lester.

Ray was employed as a machinist at Hyster Company in Kewanee retiring in 1984. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Kewanee, Kewanee VFW Post 8078 and a 50 year member of Machinists Local Union.

Ray was a model railroader and enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, July 30, 2011 at the Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, Il. Pastor Dan Craig will officiate. Burial will be in the Pleasant View cemetery, Kewanee, Il. where military honors will be accorded by the Kewanee Veterans Council. Visitation will be from 9:30 A.M. until the time of services on Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Kidney Foundation or the American Heart Association.

Frank Puntarec

Frank Puntarec, 90, of Kewanee died 2:48 p.m. Sunday, March 18,2012 at St. Francis Hospital Peoria. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday March 22, 2012 at Schueneman & Tumbleson funeral home with the Rev. Dan Craig officiating. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the services at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Pleasant View cemetery Kewanee.

Frank was born July 4, 1921 in Croatia, son of Tony and Sena Puntarec. He came to the United States in 1950, and married Sylvia Kaslo on January 26, 1964 in Wood Dale, Illinois. She survives as well as a sister-in-law Mrs. Shirley (Russell) Hunter, of Kewanee. He was preceded in death by both parents, and 1 brother.

Frank worked for many years in Chicago in the packing dept. for retail stores.

Frank enjoyed playing tennis and had played in many tournaments. He also had played tennis with Andre Agassi when he was very young, as Frank had known Andres parents. He also enjoyed singing, and reading

Carol E Ast

Carol E. Ast (nee Dooley), age 65, passed away in OSF St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria, on Thursday, June 11, 2009. Carol had valiantly battled lung and cardiac disease, and passed peacefully to an afterlife at 3:15 PM, with her husband Joseph, and children in attendance. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Mynette (nee Anderson) Dooley.

She was born January 24, 1944 in St. Francis Hospital in Kewanee. Survivors include her husband of 40 years, Joseph, her brother William, and her four children Elizabeth, Daniel, Emily and Elaine (Jason Baele). Three adoring grandchildren mourn their loss: Zachary Ast, Courtney Baele, and Caitlyn Baele; and two step-grandchildren: Mason Baele and Mathew Baele.

Carol leaves behind a great void in her immediate family unit, and will always be remembered for her loving kindnesses as a devoted wife, a caring mother, and a super grandmother. She was a member of St. Mary’s Church, and attended Visitation Catholic Grade School for eight years. Following graduation from Wethersfield High School, she studied and became a dental assistant in Chicago. She married S. Joseph Ast on October 27, 1968, at Visitation Church in Kewanee, and initially helped her young husband in operations of the Ast Cabinet Shop in Kewanee. She put all of her energy into raising and nurturing her four children into adulthood. The arrival of grandchildren provided her new happiness and joy to watch them grow and thrive.

Carol and Joe loved to travel and explore the land and the world in their younger days. Loading up the station wagon and then the vans, they crisscrossed the continent on family trips. Overseas trips included visits to Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Spain, and a marvelous two week Mediterranean cruise touching all major ports in Southern Europe and North Africa.

Arrangements are being handled by Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Inc. Visitation will be at the funeral home Friday evening, June 19, 2009, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Church, Kewanee, on Saturday, June 20, 2009, at 10:00 AM. Internment at Pleasant View cemetery will be private at a later date.

Memorials may be made to Visitation Catholic Grade School, Kewanee.

Landen Franklin Anthony Barnes

Landen Franklin Anthony Barnes, son of Cassandra J. Barnes was still born at 5:05 P.M. Friday, September 7, 2007 at Kewanee Hospital.

Also surviving is a brother Michael Barnes, maternal grandparents Tari Ince and her special friend Anthony Peed of Kewanee and Rob Barnes of Buda, Il.,

Maternal great grandparents Janey and Kenneth Crockett of Newport News, Va., Robert Barnes of Kewanee and Mary Ince of Silvis, Il. Landen was preceded in death by his maternal great grandfather Keith Ince.

Graveside services will be at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, September 13, 2007 in the Pleasant View cemetery, Kewanee, Il. Rev. K. Bruce Rushing of the First United Methodist Church will officiate.

There will be no visitation. The Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, Il. is in charge of arrangements.

Mildred Bierman
08/08/1923 - 08/23/2014
Mildred Bierman, 91, of Kewanee, Il. died at 3:15 P.M. Saturday, August 23, 2014 at Kewanee Care Home. Mildred was born August 8, 1923 in Kewanee the daughter of Dale and Alice Effie (Gaumer) Hamilton. She attended Wethersfield School.

Surviving is a son Dale “Butch” (Bev) Williams of Kewanee, two grandsons Christopher (Tammara) Williams of Naperville, Il., Patrick (Aimee) Williams of Batavia, Il., five great grandchildren Sam, Lauren, Elizabeth, Max and Katherine, three sisters Catherine Logan of Vacaville, Ca., Margaret Donaldson and Martha Euchaski both of Kewanee and two brothers Marvin (Phyllis) Hamilton of Normal, Il. and Thomas Jack (Eloise) Hamilton of San Bernardino, Ca.

Mildred was preceded in death by her husbands, parents, an infant daughter Mildred Jean, three brothers Milton, Kenneth and Dale Hamilton, Jr. and one sister Marilyn Whisker.

Mildred enjoyed hunting with both the bow and gun, fishing, sail boating and golf.

Cremation was accorded. There will be no visitation and services will be private for the family. The Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, Il. is in charge of arrangements.

Nicholas P. “Nick” Caras

Nicholas P. “Nick” Caras, 74, of Osprey, Fl. and formerly of Kewanee, Il. died Monday, December 5, 2005 in a Venice, Fl. Hospital.

He was born December 7, 1930 in Geneseo, Il. the son Peter and Georgia (Anastopoulos) Caras. His parents owned and operated the DeLuxe Confectionary in Kewanee.

He graduated from Kewanee High School in 1950. He attended Lincoln Junior College in Lincoln, Il. and graduated in 1952. While in Kewanee he was employed by Boss Manufacturing Co. He moved to Rock Island where he worked in sales with Karmelkorn Shoppes and since moving to Florida with Generation Salon Services for the past 10 years.

He married Nancy Bonne in August of 1980. She survives along with one daughter Corrine G. (Steve) Smith of Rock Island, Il. and one step daughter Bridget (Steve) Smith of Edwardsville, Il. one son Peter G. Caras of Rock Island, Il. and one stepson Brian Bonne of Hersher, Il. Two sisters Christina (Martin) Christon of Greendale, Wi. and Emily Caras of Kewanee, Il. Four grandchildren Dillon, Jenna, Conner and Claire. He was preceded in death by his parents.

He was a member of St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church in Sarasota, Fl.

Cremation rites were accorded and a memorial service will be at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, December 13, 2005 at St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Rock Island, Il. Rev. Leo Gavrilos will officiate. There is no visitation.

Private family Inurnment will be in the Pleasant View cemetery, Kewanee, Il. Memorials may be directed to American Heart Association, P.O. Box 21475, St. Petersburg, Fl. 33742 or St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church, 7671 Lockwood Ridge Rd., Sarasota, Fl. 34243. The Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral in Kewanee is in charge of local arrangements. Arrangements in Sarasota, Florida are by the Packer Funeral Home.

John Edward Aldrich

John Edward Aldrich, 84, of Kewanee, Il. died at 3:45 P.M. Saturday, March 31, 2012 at Hammond-Henry Hospital in Geneseo.

John was born September 2, 1927 in Nolting, Il. the son of Dempsey and Carrie (Ball) Aldrich.

John married Donna Jean Hoopes on July 14, 1956 in Galesburg, Il. She preceded him in death on January 22, 2008. He was also preceded in death by his parents, a son Samuel at birth, eight brothers and one sister.

Surviving are four daughters Cynthia (Jerry) Bergren of Kewanee, Maelene (David) Walton of Kewanee, Patricia (David) Robb of Wheatland, Wyoming, Stacie (Kevin) Doyle of Kewanee, three sons James (Angela) Aldrich of Kewanee, John (Melody) Aldrich of East Moline, Richard (Rachell) Aldrich of Kewanee, 22 grand children, 14 great grandchildren and one brother Delmar Aldrich of Centralia, Il.

John was employed for 18 years at Murray Industries in Galva and 18 years as a welder at Pines Trailer Co. in Kewanee prior to retiring in the early 1990’s.

John was a die hard St Louis Cardinal fan. He enjoyed reading a good western by Zane Grey or Louis L’amour. John also enjoyed a good plate of ribs and spending time with his family.

A memorial service will be held at 6:00 P.M. Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at the Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, Il. Pastor Dan Craig will officiate. Visitation will be from 5-6 P.M. on Wednesday the 11th at the funeral home. Private family inurnment will be in the Pleasant View cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Kathi "Crash" Shields Baker
11/17/1944 - 02/06/2016
Kathi "Crash" Shields Baker, 72, of Galesburg, Il. and formerly of Kewanee, Il. died Saturday, February 6, 2016 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Il.

Kathi was born November 17, 1944 in Kewanee, Il. the daughter of Robert and Dora (Norbo) Shields. She graduated from Galva High School with the class of 1962. Kathi married Jim Baker.

Surviving are two daughters Wendi (James) Hardesty of Flora, In., Tyfani Byrne of Johnson City, Tn., five grandchildren Skylar, Cassie, Jake, Brandon and Caleb and one great grandson Spencer. Also surviving are two sisters Peggy (Don) England of Galva, Il and Sandy (Robert) Miles of Browns Mills, N.J.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers John and Tom.

Crash was a member of the Kewanee Pool League. She will be remembered for her hand made greeting cards and extreme holiday enthusiasm which included a Christmas tree decorated for every holiday of the year. She thoroughly enjoyed knitting quietly by a fireplace drinking an ice cold Coca-Cola. Crash was a warm hearted woman who loved with all she had.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 P.M. Wednesday, February 10, 2016 at the Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, Il. Visitation will be from noon until the time of services on Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be left at the funeral home.
