Doris McMunn

RUSHVILLE, Ill. - Doris McMunn, 77, of Rushville, Ill., formerly a longtime resident of Hamilton, Ill., died at 7:35 a.m. Monday, Oct. 21, 2002, at Culbertson Long Term Care in Rushville.
She was born on May 10, 1925, in Rushville, the daughter of David V. and Etta P. Atkinson Vollmer. She married
Earl McMunn on Nov. 5, 1945, at the First Christian Church in Denver, Colo. He preceded her in death on June 14, 1999.
Survivors include: a son, Richard E. (and Diane) McMunn of Hamden, Conn.; three sisters, Margie Luthy of Rushville, Louisa Cripe of Astoria, Ill., and Nancy Longwell of Mountain Grove, Mo.; and two grandchildren, Shannon McMunn of Farmington, Conn., and Meaghan McMunn of Hamden.
She also was preceded in death by her parents; a granddaughter, Erin McMunn; and a sister, Iola Icenogle.
She graduated from Rushville High School.
She worked for more than 30 years as an administrative assistant at Cosgrove Insurance Agency, Serfass Insurance Agency and Lofton Insurance Agency.
Mrs. McMunn was a member of the Montebello Floral Society.
She also served on the Hamilton Library Board and the Election Board.
Mrs. McMunn was a member of the First Christian Church in Hamilton. She served as a Sunday school teacher for many years and was a member of King's Daughters.
Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Thursday at Lamporte Funeral Home of Hamilton, with the Rev. Dr. E. Ambrose Stump officiating and Father Robert Reynolds assisting.
Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery, Hamilton.
Visitation is after 3 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with family meeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m. and from 9 a.m. until the time of services on Thursday at the funeral home.

Joseph A. 'Joe' Braeden
July 10, 1930 - Dec. 20, 2002
WARSAW, Ill. - Joseph A. "Joe" Braeden, 72, a lifelong resident of Warsaw, Ill., died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at Keokuk Area Hospital.
He was born on July 10, 1930, in Warsaw, Ill., the son of Albert and Cecilia Hebert Braeden. He married
Sue Epperson Satterly on July 5, 1975, in St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Warsaw. She survives.
Additional survivors include: a son, Dennis of Warsaw; two daughters, Gayle Roskamp and her husband, Mike, of Warsaw and Rhonda Kay and her husband, Bud, of Kamiah, Idaho; two stepdaughters, Petty Officer First Class Robin Satterly of San Diego, Calif., and Pam Ragar and her husband, Mark, of Keokuk; grandchildren, Amy and Ricky Kay of Idaho and Tyler and Dustin Roskamp of Warsaw; step grandchildren, Ashley, Melinda and Jacob Ragar of Keokuk and Nathan Land of Texas; a great-grandson, Logan; a brother, Cecil Braeden and his wife, Maureen of Anacortes, Wash.; and a sister, Celine Knoche and her husband, Paul, of Warsaw.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert Braeden.
He grew up on the family farm near Warsaw along with his two brothers and their sister.
After graduation from Warsaw High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He also attended Western Illinois University in Macomb, Ill.
Mr. Braeden worked as a car salesman in Carthage and Nauvoo, Ill. He then owned and operated several businesses in Warsaw, all associated with service, repair and sales of automobiles.
Many local residents will remember him from having done business with him and many more will remember him as their school bus driver. He drove the school bus for 37 years.
Mr. Braeden loved softball and played on local teams for several seasons.
His grandchildren called him Papa Joe.
He lived to fish and especially enjoyed the many fishing trips he took to Canada and Washington State with his brothers and friends.
As a young man he had an interest in collecting geodes.
Mr. Braeden bowled in Keokuk on various leagues. He was an avid mushroom hunter and loved watching the St. Louis Cardinals on TV. He was also very proud of his homemade wine.
He had many friends over the years and treasured every one of them.
Mr. Braeden had great pride in the community and served as chairman for many fund-raisers, generously donating his time and finances to many community activities. He was also very active in the Hancock County Democratic Party.
Mr. Braeden was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, American Legion and was past president of the Warsaw Chamber of Commerce.
Funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Warsaw, with Father Michael Menner officiating.
Burial with full military honors will be in Oakland cemetery, Warsaw.
Visitation is after 3 p.m. Thursday at Lamporte Funeral Home in Warsaw, with family meeting friends from 6 to 9 p.m. The rosary will be prayed at 8 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the Warsaw Ambulance.
H. Wendell Spangler
July 3, 1916 - Oct. 20, 2002
H. Wendell Spangler, 86, a longtime resident of Warsaw, Ill., recently a resident of River Hills Village in Keokuk, died at 3:40 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, at River Hills Village.
He was born on July 3, 1916, near Webster, Hancock County, Ill., the son of Harry E. and Agnes Callahan Spangler. He married
Dorothy Fletcher on Aug. 15, 1937, in Warsaw. She preceded him in death.
Survivors include: a daughter, Mary Anne (and Gary) Scott of Indianapolis, Ind.; a son, Terry (and Julie) Spangler of Warsaw; two sisters, Helen Foster of Sterling, Ill., and Mary Iungerich of Sun Lakes, Ariz.; two grandsons, Nathan Scott and Damon Scott; and three stepgrandchildren, Michelle Watson, Candi Moore and Wendi Buysse.
He also was preceded in death by his parents.
He graduated from Fountain Green and Webster, Ill., schools and from Western Illinois University, Macomb, receiving his master's degree in education.
Mr. Spangler was a lifelong educator and began his teaching career in a one room schoolhouse near Fountain Green, teaching all 12 grades.
In 1948, after earning his master's he went to the Warsaw School District, serving first as principal of the high school and then as district superintendent.
After nearly 20 years in the Warsaw School District, he worked for the State Department of Education under Ray Page, State Superintendent of Schools.
Following this appointment, he worked for the federal C.E.T.A. job training program. He then returned to teaching part-time in the Warsaw schools as a reading specialist and mentor.
During his retirement years, he served on the Policy Committee and the Board of Directors for the West Central Illinois P.A.C.T. (Parent and Child Together).
Mr. Spangler was a volunteer with the Bloodmobile and Meals on Wheels and was active in the Illinois Retired Teachers Association. He was a life member of the Masonic Lodge in Warsaw.
Mr. Spangler served on the Warsaw Park Board and was active in the Warsaw Coon-hunters' Association. He was well-known for raising and training championship coon-hounds.
Mr. Spangler was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church of Warsaw for more than 50 years, serving as an elder, deacon and adult Sunday school teacher.
Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church in Warsaw, with Rev. Bill Olmsted officiating.
Burial will be held in the Moss Ridge cemetery, Carthage, Ill.
Family will meet friends from 9 a.m. Wednesday until the time of services at the church.
Memorials in his memory may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Warsaw or any charity of the donor's choice.

Bernice Louise Damron
July 30, 1917 - June 10, 2003
BASCO, Ill. - Bernice Louise Damron, 85, of Basco, died at 12:45 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, 2003.
She was born on July 30, 1917, in Warsaw, Ill., to Oscar and Caroline Zimmer Schilling. At age two, upon her mothers passing, she lived most of the time with relatives in Seward, Neb., until age six at which time her father remarried
Henrietta Braun in Warsaw. She married
William Orville Damron of Basco, Ill., on Aug. 14, 1941, at the Concordia Lutheran Church in Warsaw. He preceded her in death on Jan. 5, 1985.
Survivors include: three sons, John Milton Damron (wife Debbie) of Ottawa, Ill., Richard Alan Damron of Springfield, Ill., and James David Damron of Basco; a grandson, Derek William Damron and granddaughter, Carleigh Marise Damron, also of Ottawa; a brother, Harold (Rex) Schilling of Burlington; sisters-in-laws, Dorothy Schilling of Warsaw, and Elizabeth Damron of Endwell, N.Y.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She also was preceded in death by an infant son, William S., at birth on June 13, 1942; her two oldest brothers, Herman Schilling (wife Helen) and Eugene Schilling; and a brother-in-law, David H. Damron.
She returned to Warsaw after her father remarried
, attending Warsaw elementary and Warsaw High School, graduating in 1935.
She and her husband established their home in Basco where she remained a resident the rest of her life.
During World War II she traveled with her husband during his Navy training in the United States, returning to Basco when he was assigned to a ship in the Pacific.
She worked at various secretarial positions while her husband was in the Navy and participated in the family business, Damron Radio and Damron Insurance Agency, in addition to being a full-time mother and homemaker.
She enjoyed her membership and participation with the Basco Walking Club and the Basco Pinochle Club of which she was a member of 61 years, as well as various community events and functions.
She was devoted to her family and church, enjoyed her flowers, garden, birds, especially Cardinals and Eagles, wildlife, local travel, music and her many friends. In addition, she was the perpetual friend of unfortunate kitties in need of a home and loving care. She shared with her family and friends, a great sense of humor.
Mrs. Damron was a member of the Concordia Lutheran Church in Warsaw. Since her marriage in 1941, she had attended the First Baptist Church in Basco, where she was active in the Amoma Class and other church activities. Most recently she had attended joint services at the Basco United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Lamporte Funeral Home in Carthage, with the Rev. Mary Gates officiating.
Burial will be in the South cemetery, Basco.
Friends may call the funeral home after 1 p.m. Friday, with family meeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Basco or Hancock Blessing Hospice.
Joel Marvin Roth
June 21, 1925 - June 5, 2003
DENVER, Ill. - Joel Marvin Roth, 77, of Denver, Ill., died at 8:45 a.m. Thursday, June 5, 2003, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City.
He was born on June 21, 1925, in Warsaw, Ill., the son of Jodie and Fannie Stafford Roth. He married
Fannie Stahl Dickinson on Nov. 3, 1948, in Kansas City, Mo. She preceded him in death in 1975 in California. He raised five stepchildren and a stepgrandson while living in California. He married
Betty Jean Glines Rhoer on June 21, 1989, in Kahoka, Mo. She survives.
Additional survivors include: stepchildren (children of Fannie Stahl Dickinson Roth), Eldon Dickinson of California, Butch Dickinson, Phyllis Fernandez and Gena M. York, all of Vancouver, Wash., and Carol Sue Jones of California; a stepgrandson, Rick Dickinson of California; stepchildren (children of Betty Jean Glines Rhoer Roth), Mary Lou Norris of Honolulu, Hawaii, Carol (and Sean) Walker of Bowen, Ill., Donna Leffler of Warsaw, Ill., and Danny Harmon of Keokuk; and several nieces and nephews.
He also was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Zelma Newlan, Goldie Gray, Esther Clark; and brothers, Eldon, Floyd and Jack Roth.
He was called to the service during World War II from 1944 to 1949, at the age of 18. He left Europe in 1949 as Staff Sgt. of the U.S. 3rd Division 756th Tank Battalion. He drove tanks in five different countries, Germany, Italy, France, North and South Africa and Australia. He also drove tanks in Belgium and Luxemburg.
Mr. Roth was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. and the American Legion.
He had lived in California and worked as a heavy equipment operator for Operating Engineers for 40 years.
He had battled cancer for 10 years.
Funeral services were today at Lamporte Funeral Home of Hamilton, with the Rev. Jerry Goodrich officiating.
Burial with full military honors was held at the National cemetery in Keokuk.
Visitation was today at the funeral home.
A memorial has been established.
