Orville Fredrick ‘Red’ LaBonte
March 19, 1917 -- June 6, 2009
CARTHAGE, Ill. -- Orville Fredrick “Red” LaBonte, 92, of Carthage, Ill., formerly of the Elderville, Ill., area, passed on to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 6, 2009, at Heritage House, Carthage, of heart failure.
He was born on March 19, 1917, on the home place near Elderville, Wythe Township, Basco, Ill., the son of Leonard and Maud Ruhs LaBonte.
He married
Pauline Koehler Althide LaBonte on Feb. 9, 1952, in Sutter, Ill. The couple shared more than 57 years together. She survives in Carthage.
Additional survivors include: two sons, Stanley Althide of Carthage and Darrell (Deb) Althide of Basco; two daughters, Marilee (Ed) Jacquot and Donna (Ron) Hurt, both of Basco; a sister, Gladys Norton of Fort Worth, Texas; a daughter-in-law, Pat Althide of Hamilton, Ill.; 12 grandchildren, Bradley (Angela) Althide of LaPlata, Mo., Brandon (Kim) Althide of Basco, Melissa (Andy) Finch of Warsaw, Ill., Amy (Lt. Col. Mark) Bieger of DuPont, Wash., Julie Althide of St. Louis, Sara (Kip) Armstrong of Perry, Mich., Katina (Darden) Rhodes of St. Louis, Jason (Marla) Jacquot of Carthage, Ryan Jacquot of Basco, David (Nicole) Hurt of Basco, Todd Hurt of Basco and Heidi (Jeff) Harness of Basco; and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Rodney Althide in 1998; two brothers, Lawrence and Elmer LaBonte; and a sister, Leola Gabel.
Red graduated from Hamilton High School. He served with the United States Army 3rd Battalion, 184th Infantry, from 1941 to 1945. He received the Purple Heart Medal for his service while in the Pacific Theater, World War II, in Okinawa. He farmed his entire life in the Basco area, retiring in 1986. He also enjoyed attending cattle sales.
He was a member of Bethlehem United Church of Christ in Sutter, Ill., and served on the church board.
He also was a member of Hancock County Farm Bureau and Hamilton VFW Post 5256. Red enjoyed playing cards, spending time with neighbors and family, fishing and playing shuffleboard. In his later years, he enjoyed taking bus trips and spending winters in Florida. He especially loved the time he spent with his family.
Visitation is after 3 p.m. Tuesday at Bethlehem United Church of Christ in Sutter, with family meeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with Pastor Roy Paterik officiating.
Burial will be in Bethlehem United Church of Christ cemetery, with full military honors at the graveside.
Memorials have been established for Bethlehem United Church of Christ or Hancock County Blessing Hospice.
Janice Huls
June 10, 1942 - June 10, 2009
CARTHAGE, Ill. - Janice Huls, 67, of Carthage, Ill., died Wednesday, June 10, 2009, at her home.
She was born on June 10, 1942, in Elvaston, Ill., the daughter of John Irving and Isabelle (Bennett) Scott.
She was united in marriage to Clifford Huls on Dec. 1, 1958, in Carthage. They were later separated.
She attended school in Carthage. She received her nursing degree from Carl Sandburg College in 1981. She was a nurse at McDonough District Hospital in Macomb, Ill., for more than 20 years. She had volunteered for the American Red Cross and at the gift shop at Memorial Hospital in Carthage for many years.
She also had served as an election judge. She was a member of the Red Hat Ladies and enjoyed singing and playing piano. She had been a cast member for many musical productions in the area.
Survivors include: four daughters, Cheryl (Brian) Gaines of Bowen, Ill., Teresa (Myron) Leenerts of Hamilton, Ill., Julie (Brad) Walker of Carthage and Rhonda (Steve) Vinyard of Bloomfield; 10 grandchildren, Lance (Kristen) Homan, Lucas Homan, Taylor Gaines, Rebecca (Jason) Carel, Jeremy (Meghan) Leenerts, Amber Leenerts, Tiffany Mesecher, Macy Walker and Kiley and Bryce Vinyard; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert (Karen) Scott of Redding, Calif., and David (Brenda) Scott of Fort Worth, Texas; a sister, Mary Beth (Mike) Coppedge of Eudora, Kan.; an aunt, Allene (Ray) Clark of Keokuk; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Printy Funeral Home, Carthage, with burial to follow in the Bowen cemetery.
Visitation is from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, with family meeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the American Red Cross, the American Heart Association or the Diabetes Association.

Peggy Lee Miller
Dec. 28, 1949 -- June 29, 2009
HAMILTON, Ill. -- Peggy Lee Miller, 59, of Hamilton, Ill., died at 12:07 a.m. Monday, June 29, 2009, in Keokuk Area Hospital.
She was born on Dec. 28, 1949, in Keokuk, the daughter of Wayne Thomas and Catherine Louella Cole Miller.
Survivors include: a brother, Danny Lee (Louise) Miller of Hamilton; two sisters, Nanci Louise Costello of Rolla, Mo., and Debra Lynn Miller of China Springs, Texas; nieces and nephews, Tom Costello, Patrick Costello, Heath and Angela Miller; J. Scott and Anna Miller, Andrew and Heather Miller, Joey J. Russell, Albert and Joelle Diekmann, Cole Neville and Joey G. Diekmann; many great-nieces and nephews; and very special friends, Judi Davis and Virginia Savage, both of Hamilton.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
She graduated from Hamilton High School in 1968 and attended Southeastern Community College in Keokuk.
She worked at Dadant & Sons in Hamilton for many years until her failing health due to kidney failure forced her to retire in 2005.
She loved to volunteer in the community, helping with Save Our Seniors and the Covered Bridge Project Committee in Hamilton. She also was very active in Habitat for Humanity, Hamilton, and enjoyed making ceramics. Peggy liked to travel and spend time looking for treasures of one kind or another.
Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Elvaston City cemetery, Elvaston, Ill., with Bob Wagner officiating.
Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Lamporte - St. Clair Funeral Home, Hamilton.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Habitat for Humanity or Hamilton Covered Bridge Project.

Robert ‘Bobby’ Lear
July 22, 1932 - June 22, 2009
COUNTRY CLUB HILLS, Ill. - Robert “Bobby” Lear, 76, of Country Club Hills, Ill., formerly of Keokuk, died Monday, June 22, 2009, in St. James Hospital.
He was born on July 22, 1932, the son of Naomi (Mills) and Cole Lear. He was the youngest of eight children.
Survivors include: eight children, Victoria (Kevin) Williams, David (Donna), Carmen, Robert Jr. (Kirstin), Eric, Michael (Dominique), Naomi (Malcolm) Fenton and Sean; and 17 grandchildren.
His siblings, Mills, Charles, Ruth, Martha, Harold, John and Carolyn Lear, all preceded him in death.
He was a proud football player for the Keokuk Chiefs in the early 50s and was named to the Iowa all-state team.
He graduated with a full football scholarship to the University of Iowa.
He later enjoyed a successful career as an insurance agent for Aetna Insurance Agency for more than 30 years.
He enjoyed a full life of spending his spare time watching and coaching football to many children and young adults and horseback riding
He will be missed dearly.
Memorial services were scheduled today at St. Mark MB Church, 14618 Lincoln, Harvey, Ill.
Darrell D. Skaggs

WARSAW, Ill. –– Darrell D. Skaggs, 61, of Warsaw, Ill., died at 6:48 p.m. Thursday, July 2, 2009, in Blessing Hospital, Quincy, Ill.
He was born on Dec. 22, 1947, the son Grady and Opal (Everitt) Skaggs in Lincoln, Ill.
Survivors include: two sisters, Phyllis (Gary) Fisher of Winterset and Carol (Gordon) Palm of St. Mary’s, Ga.; five brothers, Grady Leon (Sonya) Skaggs of Park City, Mont., Edwin Skaggs of Aurora, Ill., Paul B. Skaggs of Mason City, Dale (Lynda) Skaggs of Milwaukee, Wis., and Dean (Pat) Skaggs of New Carlisle, Ind.; many nieces and nephews; and a dear friend, Linda Vettori.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He loved gardening and was a Master Gardener. He was a graduate of Mason City High School and Illinois Wesleyan University. He was a retired Drug Enforcement Administration special agent.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Mason City.
Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hurley Funeral Home, Mason City.
Burial will be in Mason City cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Illinois Wesleyan University.

Stephen L. Riney

HAMILTON, Ill. –– Stephen L. Riney, 61, of Hamilton, Ill., died at 4:40 p.m. Thursday, July 16, 2009, in Montebello Healthcare Center, Hamilton.
He was born on July 18, 1947, in Keokuk, the son of James L. and Anna V. Pugh Riney.
He was a graduate of Keokuk High School.
He had been employed at Vista Bakery in West Burlington for 14 years. He enjoyed working with cars and loved animals.
He was a member of the St. Patrick Catholic Church in St. Patrick, Mo.
Survivors include: two daughters, Amy Gudgel of Pawnee, Ill., and Lisa Flynn of Springfield, Ill.; two sons, Stephen T. Riney and William Riney, both of Springfield; two sisters, Amy Notestien of Stronghurst, Ill., and Mary Ann Martins of Warsaw, Ill.; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
No visitation is planned.
Burial will be in the St Patrick cemetery.
A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Banks and Beals Funeral Home of Stronghurst is assisting with arrangements.
Betty Jean Wood
WEST POINT, Ill. –– Betty Jean Wood, 80, of West Point, Ill., died at 9:45 a.m. Sunday, July 19, 2009, at her home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the West Point Christian Church in West Point.
Burial will follow in the West Point cemetery.

HANOVER PARK, Ill. – Charles W. Atterberg, 80, of Hanover Park, Ill., died Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2009, at his home.
He was born on May 11, 1929, in Keokuk.
He was retired from Arinc.
He was the beloved husband of the late Judith; devoted father of Steven (Sheryl), Nancy (Stephen) DallaValle and Eric (Luann); cherished grandfather of Daniel, Matthew, Peter and Christopher; and fond brother of Harold, Alberta, Robert, Carolyn, the late John, the late Mary and the late Dorothy.
Services were scheduled this morning at Countryside Funeral Home, 1640 Greenmeadows Blvd., Streamwood Ill.
Burial will be in Abraham Lincoln National cemetery.
Visitation was held Thursday.
