Walter Whitson

NIOTA, Ill. – Walter F. Whitson, 84, formerly of Niota, Ill., beloved husband to Margaret (Sparrow) died Sunday, May 28, 2017, in Greenfield, Mass.

He was born to Guy and Myrtle Whitson on April 1, 1933, in Rushville, Ill.

After graduating from Nauvoo High, he joined the Army and served two years during the Korean Conflict.

Besides his wife of 64 years, he is survived by children, Diane and Lynn Popplett of Pekin, Ill., Dorothy and David Faulkner of Athens, Ohio, Tom and Sue Whitson of Niota, Kevin and Vicki Whitson of Inman, S.C., Flora Robbins of Missouri, Jim Whitson of Joliet, Ill., Marilyn and David Fish of Indianapolis, Ind., and Scott and Kathie Whitson of Macomb, Ill.; 18 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his siblings, Robert Whitson and Sarah Kipping; and his daughter, Sharon Mansheim.

Having learned at an early age in his large family the value of a job well done, Walter supported his wife and children in a variety of ways. At different times, he made his living as an Army electrician, a farmer, chemical operator and truck driver. He was not afraid of a little sweat on his brow or calluses on his hands.

Walter enjoyed nothing more than telling tall tales about his life and travels. He was an avid horseman and raised Appaloosas, often riding in the Fort Madison Rodeo with his family. However, Walter’s favorite thing to do was to sing and entertain. He loved singing cowboy ballads and hymns. His special talent and much-loved song to sing was “The Auctioneer Song.” He always received lots of applause for his performance. Known for his orneriness, he always insisted that his birthdate was actually March 32. This sly humor of Walter’s often set company to laughing and having a good time.

Walter was a member of Appanoose Faith Presbyterian Church in Niota for his entire lifetime, often serving as an elder. His church family invites everyone to come and celebrate Walter’s life with them.

Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Walter Whitson Memorial.
