WARSAW, Ill. – James G. McQueen, 79, of Warsaw, Ill., passed away at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 2, 2017, at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Iowa City.
Arrangements are pending at Lamporte-St. Clair Funeral Home in Warsaw.
William 'Bill' Ewing
HAMILTON, Ill. – William E. “Bill” Ewing, 65, of rural Hamilton, Ill., died Sunday, June 4, 2017, at his home.
He was born June 19, 1951, in Keokuk, the son of William Sr. and Phyllis VanAusdall Ewing.
He was first united in marriage to Patricia Hauff in 1977. They later divorced. He later married
Rhonda Smith Kreis on Aug. 26, 1995, in Hamilton. They are separated. She survives.
Other survivors include four daughters, Kali Ewing (Brian) of Keokuk, Michelle McEntee (Brian) of Dallas City, Ill., Kelly Rowlett (Bill) of Hamilton and Leslie Kreis (Jazz) of Dallas City; 14 grandchildren; his mother, Phyllis Ewing of Hamilton; and a brother, Alex Ewing of Crystal Lake, Ill.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Bill graduated from Hamilton High School.
He had been employed by CenturyLink, originally MaBell, for 38 years until his retirement on Jan. 1.
Bill loved taking care of the horses. He was very artistic and enjoyed drawing cartoon characters, sketching and doodling. He was an exceptional graphic artist and created greeting cards and postcards for truck drivers to enjoy. Bill enjoyed woodworking, and once made a model stagecoach. Most of all, Bill adored his grandchildren and loved spending time with them.
A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, with Pastor Doug Campbell officiating.
Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with family meeting with friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
Richard 'Dick' Wells, 87, Hamilton, Ill.
HAMILTON, Ill. – Richard “Dick” Wells, 87, of Hamilton, Ill., passed away at 3:15 a.m. Monday, March 27, 2017, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
He was born on April 21, 1929, in Burlington, a son of John Murphy and Madlin Jones Wells.
Dick married
Nancy McCahan on Oct. 3, 1970, in Port Royal, Pa. She survives in Hamilton.
Survivors also include a son, Richard Wells Jr. of Haddam, Conn.; three daughters, Sally Mackey of Warren, Ohio, Judy Wells of Santa Rosa, Calif., and Katherine Richard of Sacramento, Calif.; a brother, Robert Wells of Buckley, Wash.; a sister, Esther Frances of Portsmouth, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Kelli Mackey, Amy Goodman, Andrew Morton, Madeline Wells, Tyler Wells, Connor Wells, Taylor Richard and Erin Richard; and a great-grandchild, Kai Goodman.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Jack Wells and Peter Wells; and stepmother, Dorris Willows Wells.
Dick graduated from Hamilton High School and from the University of Delaware, where he was awarded the Harter Scholarship. He was a sales executive for Hoerner Boxes Inc., Hoerner-Waldorf Inc., Fasson Corporation and Champion International. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, Lions Club, Theta Chi and Omicron Delta Kappa. He enjoyed playing tennis, farming, gardening, watching football and rasing purebred Suffolk sheep.
Cremation rites have been accorded.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Hamilton High School Athletics and Hamilton Fire Department.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at Western Illinois Threshers, north of Hamilton.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Threshers.

Dorothy Johnson, 96, Hamilton, Ill.
HAMILTON, Ill. – Dorothy E. Johnson of Montebello HealthCare Center in Hamilton, Ill., for the past year and formerly of Basco, Ill., died at 11:45 a.m. Thursday, May 18, at Montebello HealthCare Center.
She was born March 31, 1921, in rural Denver, Ill., a daughter of John J. and Anna G. Bartell Huls.
She married
Chris R. Johnson on Aug. 19, 1941, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Carthage, Ill. He preceded her in death on Feb. 9, 1994.
Dorothy attended Excelsior Grade School and was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Carthage.
Dorothy was always a homemaker, loving mother/grandmother and a friend to all. Until her health declined, she was active in the church singles group, Dorcas Doers, and the sewing group of Immanuel as well as serving as Sunday school teacher in her younger years. She had been the oldest member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. She also was a member of Western Illinois Threshers. Her passion was sewing quilts and comforters for her family and friends. She was a very talented seamstress. Dorothy loved playing cards with various card clubs in the Basco area, but most of all, loved spending time with her six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She is survived by two daughters, Diann (Robert) Means of Hamilton and Cheryl (Larry) Buckert of Warsaw, Ill.; son-in-law, Danny Wildrick of Hamilton; six grandchildren, Sheila (Chris) Moon of Guyton, Ga., Aron (Karmen) Metternich of Hamilton, Lance (Julie) Buckert of Chicago, Wade (Jamie) Buckert of Batavia, Ill., Jamie Wildrick of Hamilton and Daron Wildrick (Erin Ryan) of Quincy, Ill.; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Marion (Carolyn) Huls of Kempner, Texas; seven nieces and nephews, Randy (Kathy) Huls of Parker, Colo., Kathy (Bruce) Scott of Keokuk, Alan (Bea) Huls of Wataga, Ill., Rick Huls of Waxahachie, Texas, Dawn Merrell of Valrico, Fla., Mike (Rita) Huls of Killeen, Texas, and Dana (Chris) Ware of Austin, Texas; special caregivers, Mike and Ginny Johnson of Basco, Terry Fecht of Bowen, Ill., and Kim Newlon of Hamilton; plus many other nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were a daughter, Beverly Wildrick; her parents; an infant sister; two brothers, Walter Huls and Wilbur Huls; sister-in-law, Mary Huls; and great-nephew, Aaron Huls.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at Immanuel Lutheran Church south of Carthage.
Services will follow visitation at 11 a.m. at the church, with Pastor Richard Hertenstein officiating.
Burial will be in Immanuel Lutheran cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church, Montebello Activity Fund or Blessing Hospice.
Edward 'LaVerne' Mitchell, 88, Carthage, Ill.
CARTHAGE, Ill. – Edward LaVerne Mitchell, 88, of Carthage, Ill., passed away at 8:35 p.m. Wednesday, May 17, 2017, at his home.
LaVerne was born June 18, 1928, the son of Floyd and Doris Jewell Ferguson Mitchell in rural LaHarpe, Ill. He was raised by Fred and Vera Rings until Vera’s death, then lived with Fred’s parents, Ethel and Tylee Adams.
He attended grade schools in Webster, Ill., and graduated from Fountain Green High School in 1945.
On July 24, 1949, he was united in marriage to Anna Mae Vance in the front yard of Anna Mae’s parents, Joseph and Ruth Duffy Vance, in rural Carthage.
LaVerne started mechanical work with Carl Motors and also custom farmed until moving to Colorado in 1971 and engaged in road construction. He later ran his trucking business, delivering log homes across the country. He returned to Carthage to retire in 2000, but refused to sit still. He drove for Crop Production and the Basco Elevator for more than 10 years. LaVerne was a member of Bentley Saddle Club and the Mississippi Valley square dance club.
LaVerne is survived by three daughters, Joann (Gerald) Kilgore of Milliken, Colo., June (Garry) Richardson of Carthage and Janet Mitchell of Anderson, S.C.; 11 grandchildren, Simone (Rick) Sheppard, Becky (Dan) White, Eric Funkenbush, Cassie (Josh) Blackett, Stephanie (James) Lutter, Stacie (Mark) Thomas, Sam (Angelina) Hardy, Sonia Richardson, Ronda (Dan) Johnson, Donna (Rodney) Rhodes and Brett (Heather) Moore; 23 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter, Amilea Jo Hardy; a half-sister, Geraldine (Ed) Dodson of Illiopolis, Ill.; three half-brothers, Donald (Margie) Mitchell of Taylorville, Ill., Bill (Madalynn) Mitchell of Decatur, Ill., and Vernon (Karen) Mitchell of Lincoln, Neb.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Joyce (Roger) Funkenbush; son-in-law, Steve Hardy; grandson, Scott Bergman; half-sisters, Jeanette Rorie, Joann Meschner, Betty (Leebold) Forquer, Beverly Meyers and Marvella Carey; and half-brothers, Jim and Dale Mitchell, Ron, Henry and Robert Carnes.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Printy Funeral Home in Carthage, with burial to follow in Harmony Township cemetery near Bentley.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Printy Funeral Home in Carthage.

Sheryl 'Sherry' Nicklaus, 54, Batavia, Ill.
BATAVIA, Ill. – Sheryl Lee “Sherry” Derksen Nicklaus, 54, of Batavia, Ill., formerly of West Point, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 8, 2017, at her home, surrounded by her family.
Sherry was born on July 10, 1962, in Fort Madison, the daughter of William and Rosanna Boeding Derksen.
Sherry is survived by her loving husband, Dennis Nicklaus; and two daughters.
The family will meet with friends from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Schmitz Funeral Home in West Point, where a parish rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. that evening.
A memorial mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in West Point, with Father Dennis as celebrant.
Interment will be in Calvary cemetery in West Point.
Clara Best, 72, Lindenhurst, Ill.
LINDENHURST, Ill. – Clara Jo Best, 72, of Lindenhurst, Ill., formerly of Dunlap, Ill., died at 11:41 a.m. Thursday, May 4, 2017, at Advocate-Condell Hospital in Libertyville, Ill.

Mary Couch, 97, Carthage, Ill.
CARTHAGE, Ill. – Mary Evylin Couch, 97, of Carthage, Ill., passed away Tuesday morning, May 2, 2017, at Montebello HealthCare Center in Hamilton, Ill.
Mary was born Dec. 11, 1919, in Schuyler County, Mo., the daughter of Virgil Ellsworth and Hazel Pearl Henry Winn. She graduated from Bible Grove High School in 1938 and then attended nurses training in night school.
On Aug. 18, 1938, she was united in marriage to Joe Couch in Memphis, Mo. He preceded her in death in 1998.
Mary had worked as a nurse’s aide at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Keokuk and then Clark County Nursing Home in Kahoka, Mo.
She was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Carthage. She taught Sunday school and was a member of the Christian Women’s Fellowship. Mary was an excellent seamstress and did alterations for many years. She also enjoyed crocheting and made baby clothes for many years for the church.
Mary is survived by three children, Clifford Joe (Mary Ann) Couch of Clark County, Mo., Rosalie Ada (H.T.) Lensgraf of Mount Pleasant and Judy (Paul) Klein of Ferris, Ill.; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Myrtle Fisher.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joe Couch, in 1998; two brothers, Floyd Ellsworth Winn and James Leslie Winn; and a sister, Wilma Bowen.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Printy Funeral Home in Carthage, with burial to follow in Anson cemetery near Kahoka.
Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until time of services at the funeral home.

Catherine 'Kay' Rice, 95, Carthage, Ill.
CARTHAGE, Ill. – Catherine W. “Kay” Rice, 95, of Carthage, Ill., passed away at 5:10 p.m. Sunday, April 30, 2017, at Montebello HealthCare Center in Hamilton, Ill.
Kay was born Jan. 8, 1922, the daughter of Frederick Waldo and Eva Catherine Beller Whitney in Fort Riley, Kan.
On April 17, 1942, she was united in marriage to Vilas Clifford Rice in Oildale, Calif. He preceded her in death.
Kay had served as a Girl Scout leader in her younger years, and also was in many bridge clubs. She was active in the Republican Party, American Legion Auxiliary and Women’s Club. Kay was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Carthage.
Kay is survived by a daughter, Catherine Jane Rouyer of Seattle, Wash.; two grandchildren, Catherine and Anne; a great-grandchild, Chris; four nieces and a nephew.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Vilas; a daughter, Judith Ann Brunhouse; and two sisters, Nancy Bishop and Dorothea Etta Reid.
A celebration of life will be from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Friday at Printy Funeral Home in Carthage, where family and friends can share stories and memories.
