John Phillips, 74, Hamilton, Ill.
HAMILTON, Ill. – John G. Phillips, 74, of Hamilton, Ill., died Sunday, April 2, 2017, at Keokuk Area Hospital.
He was born on April 4, 1942, in Chicago, Ill., the son of George and Lee Posche Phillips.
He graduated from Main Township High School in Chicago with the Class of 1960. He continued his education at Northern Illinois University and graduated in 1964.
On Nov. 1, 1997, John was united in marriage to Marinelle Jairl at New Testament Christian Church in Keokuk. She survives.
Other survivors include two daughters, Lauren (Scott) Steele of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Kristen (Joe) Schultis of Auburn, Ind.; a son, Jason (Catrina) Phillips of Parker, Colo.; two stepdaughters, Lori (Ken) Webermeier of Freeport, Ill., and Karena Haage of Keokuk; six grandchildren, Alex and Jacob Steele, Madison and Natalie Schultis, and Jackson and Chelsie Phillips; three stepgrandchildren, Shane (Sarah) Happs, Dalton Haage and Madison Schwab; a stepgreat-grandson, Damien Happs; and special friends, Connie and Roger McDermott of Hamilton, Dale DeBoth of Minnesota and Laura Mesner of Keokuk.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Ginger Phillips.
John had been employed as a labor relations manager at American Hoist and Derrick in Saginaw, Mich., Auburn Foundry in Auburn, and Steel Castings and Stone Container, both in Keokuk.
He was active in his community, where he served on the Hamilton Public Library Board of Directors and also on the Hamilton Zoning Board.
One of John’s favorite pastimes was reading, especially action novels, and he read several books every week. John loved to travel, and he and Marinelle enjoyed many years of traveling throughout the U.S., including Hawaii, and also to Canada and the Panama Canal. He also enjoyed playing golf and was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. John had a great personality and sense of humor and was liked by everyone who met him.
According to his wishes, there will be no services.
Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice.

Adeline Kennedy, 95, Hamilton, Ill.
HAMILTON, Ill. – Adeline Bradie Kennedy, 95, of Hamilton, Ill., passed away at 6:55 a.m. Sunday, April 9, 2017, in Hamilton.
She was born on July 23, 1921, in Stronghurst, Ill., a daughter of Halyard and Bradie Violet Allcock Corley.
She married
Robert C. Boecker on Dec. 26, 1939. He passed away on Jan. 1, 1976. On June 11, 1993, she married
George Ford Kennedy. He preceded her in death on Feb. 23, 1999.
Survivors include four daughters, Dee Ann (Tracy) Pierce of Hamilton, Jacqulin Thompson of Fort Madison, Dixie Horsey of Salem and Sandra (Jerry) Schaff of Hamilton; three sons, Donald Boecker of Keokuk, Jerry (Joan) Boecker of Keokuk and Jimmie (Teresa) Boecker of Montrose; a daughter-in-law, Patricia Boecker of Burlington; two sisters, Helen (Eddie) Dettmer of Argyle and Opal Lee of Knoxville; and a sister-in-law, Marge Corley of Martinez, Ga.
She also is survived by 28 grandchildren, 58 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
Adeline was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Larry R. Boecker; sons-in-law, Tommy Thompson and Thomas Horsey; a daughter-in-law, Karen Boecker; two grandchildren, Eric and Emily Pierce; and two brothers, Billy Corley and Robert Corley.
Adeline attended schools in Sperry. She had worked at Swift’s, Dryden’s and Sheller Globe, where she retired after 23 years. She was a member of Melrose Methodist Church and the Baptist church of Hamilton. She was a union stewart and an honorary member for No. 444 of the United Steel Workers of America.
Adeline enjoyed sewing, quilting, camping, dancing to big band music, family and friends. She especially enjoyed the time with her many grandchildren.
Cremation rites have been accorded.
Visitation will be after noon Friday, with family meeting friends from 1 to 2 p.m. at Lamporte-St. Clair Funeral Home in Hamilton.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Nick Gleason officiating.
A private family burial will follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established in memory of Adeline Kennedy.
William 'Bill' Bevier, 79, Nauvoo, Ill.
NAUVOO, Ill. – William Herbert “Bill” Bevier, 79, of Nauvoo, Ill., passed away at 11:56 a.m. Monday, April 10, 2017, at Select Specialty Hospital in Davenport.
He was born May 28, 1937, in Brookfield, Mo., the son of Clarence Glenn and Virginia Diemer Bevier.
Survivors include six children, including locally, Mary Jenkins of Nauvoo, Jerry (Connie) Bevier of Niota, Ill., Kerry (Kathy Mosley) Bevier of Fort Madison and Andy (Tammy) Bevier of Nauvoo.
Per his wishes, his body has been entrusted to Schmitz Funeral Home for cremation and there will be no visitation.
A memorial mass will be at 11 a.m. Monday, April 24, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Nauvoo, with Father Tony Trosley as celebrant.
The family will meet with friends at a luncheon following the memorial mass.

P. Joyce Kropp, 92, Warsaw, Ill.
WARSAW, Ill. – P. Joyce Kropp, 92, a longtime resident of rural Warsaw, Ill., passed away at 3:15 a.m. Sunday, March 26, 2017, at River Hills Village in Keokuk.

Richard "Dick" Wells, 87, Hamilton, Ill.
HAMILTON, Ill. – Richard “Dick” Wells, 87, of Hamilton, Ill., passed away at 3:15 a.m. Monday, March 27, 2017, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
He was born on April 21, 1929, in Burlington, a son of John Murphy and Madeline Jones Wells.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy of Hamilton; and four children.
Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorials service will be held at a later date.

Harlan "Dean" Bickel, 74, Macomb, Ill.
MACOMB, Ill. – Harlan “Dean” Bickel, born July 29, 1942, in Milton, passed away Monday, March 27, 2017, in Macomb, Ill., after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
He was the son of Rosemary and Ormal Bickel. Both preceded him in death.
Dean married
Judith Brewer on Sept. 20, 1963, in Pine Castle, Fla. She survives.
Dean started Dean’s Custom Auto Trim in March 1965. He loved his work and serving all the people in the surrounding area. The business is now run by Rick Hamelton, a long-time employee.
He was a Navy veteran and a skydiver, and had made about 5,000 parachute jumps. He was a private pilot for many years. Dean loved farming, raising cattle, and being outdoors. He loved to dance and enjoyed going to the Southside Boat Club to hear the music and dance.
Dean is survived by his brothers, Leroy (Sandra) Bickel of Burlington and Keith Bickel of Marshalltown; his sister, Rachel (Don) Krouse of Altamont, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service with military rites will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Keokuk National cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, with family meeting friends from 5 to 7 p.m. at DeJong-Greaves Celebration of Life Centers, 917 Blondeau St., Keokuk.
Memorials may be directed to Harbor Light Hospice, 1865 N. Henderson, Ste. 10, Galesburg, IL 61401, or either of the Keokuk animal shelters.

Elizabeth 'Bettie' Merritt, 95, Carthage, Ill.
CARTHAGE, Ill. – Elizabeth Elwanda “Bettie” Merritt, 95, of Carthage, Ill., passed away at 10:12 a.m. Wednesday, March 22, 2017, at Maple Grove Senior Living in Carthage.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Ferris Christian Church, with burial to follow in Moss Ridge cemetery in Carthage.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until time of services at 11 a.m. at Ferris Christian Church.

Jane Leathem, 72, Carthage, Ill.
CARTHAGE, Ill. – Jane E. Leathem, 72, of Carthage, Ill., died at 1:55 p.m. Wednesday, March 15, 2017, in her home, after a short battle with cancer.
Jane was born on Oct. 26, 1944, in Springfield, Ill., the daughter of Dr. Paul and Nancy Grosboll Hendren.
Jane moved to Carthage with her parents and her brother Paul following her father’s graduation in the first class of veterinary medicine from the University of Illinois in 1952.
On July 19, 1975, she was married
to Bruce Leathem at First Presbyterian Church in Carthage.
Jane graduated from Carthage High School in the Class of 1962. She then attended the Burlington Beauty Academy and became a registered beautician. She then attended Illinois State University at Bloomington-Normal, graduating in 1968 with a degree in home economics. Jane taught school in Fort Madison for 10 years. She later became a day therapist at the Hancock County Mental Health Center, a position she kept for 20 years.
Jane was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Carthage, where she served as a deacon and as the memorial committee treasurer for more than 20 years. She was a member of P.E.O. Chapter J, she served on the board of the Shephard’s pantry and for more than 40 years, and was involved in the Carthage Christmas Club. Jane was a member of Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and was a volunteer at Memorial Hospital and Memorial Medical Clinic. She loved playing cards and visiting with anyone she met. She was an excellent cook, and loved her home and family.
She is survived by her husband, Bruce of Carthage; her daughter, Tammy Leathem of Denver, Colo.; her son, Tommy (Erin) Leathem of Starkville, Miss., and their three children, Addison, Brady and Katelyn; a sister-in-law, Suzanne Hendren of Champaign, Ill.; aunts, Clara Jean Grosboll of Petersburg, Ill., and Winona Alvey and Betty Jane (James) Black, both of Harrisburg, Ill.; and nieces, nephews and a host of cousins whom she dearly loved.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, Paul on Jan. 11, 2017.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church in Carthage, with the Rev. Greg Busboom officiating.
At her wish, burial will be Monday in Sunset Lawn cemetery in Harrisburg.
Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Friday at Printy Funeral Home in Carthage, and from 4 to 7 p.m. with the family.
Memorials in the name of Jane E. Leathem have been established.
