LaVeda Alexander
CHADWICK -- LaVeda M. Alexander, 80, of rural Chadwick died Friday, Sept. 3, 2004, at the CGH Medical Center Dialysis Unit, in Sterling.
LaVeda was born Oct. 1, 1923, in Hanley, Saskatchewan, Canada, the daughter of Clifford and Ruby (Milnes) Durward. She was a graduate of the York Community High School, with the class of 1941. She attended Shimer College in Mount Carroll.
She married Vernon L. Alexander on Jan. 26, 1946, in Thomson. He died on Sept. 10, 2000, in Sterling.
LaVeda was a homemaker most of her life. Her family was most important to her. She was called the "Family Historian." She was a member of the Fairhaven United Methodist Church, Order of the Eastern Star. She was past president of the Republican Women, a 4-H leader, and served on the Carroll County Farm Bureau Women's Committee.
She is survived by three sons, Raymond (Barb) Alexander, Keith (Camella) Alexander, and Larry (Linda) Alexander, all of Chadwick; one daughter, Karen (Dennis) Schriner of Lanark; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Cliff (Norma) Durward of Thomson.
In addition to her husband, LaVeda is preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
The service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Fairhaven United Methodist Church, Fairhaven, with Pastor Dave Davies officiating. Burial will be in the Chadwick Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home in Mount Carroll.
A memorial fund has been established.
Robert J. Burke
WARREN -- Robert J. Burke, 77, of Warren entered into eternal rest on Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, at Meriter Park Hospital in Madison, Wis.
He was born Dec. 19, 1926, in Gratiot, Wis., to James and Gertrude "Siddy" (Doyle) Burke. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during WWII. He lived in Gratiot most of his life and was married to Joan B. Ross in 1952. She passed away in 1977. Bob then married Barbara Ruegsegger-Ellingson on Dec. 18, 1993, in Gratiot.
Bob was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Warren, the Gratiot Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the LaFayette County Shamrock Club.
Survivors include his wonderful wife, Barbara; his children, Tim (Susan) Burke of Gratiot, Jody (Hank) Pullett of Stoughton, Wis., Todd (Darlene) Ellingson of New Glarus, Wis., Sally (Will) Grinnell of Albany, Russell Ellingson of New Glarus, and Sue Ann Van Der Eng of Fayetteville, N.C.; four grandchildren, Aaron Riley, Regina Ellingson, Randi and Curtis Miller; one brother, Art (Juanita) Burke of Gratiot, his brother-in-law, Mike Stoddard of Berlin, Wis.; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Jane Stoddard.
Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Gratiot, with Father Randy Budnar officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery.
Friends may call from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at Steil Camacho Funeral Home, 206 E. Harriet St., Darlington, Wis., and from 9:30 a.m. to time of service Monday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
Judith Siegmeier
FREEPORT -- Judith "Judy" Kay Siegmeier, 55, of Freeport died Friday, Sept. 3, 2004, at The Monroe Clinic Hospital, Monroe.
A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at The Chapel of Peace in Oakland Cemetery and Mausoleum, Freeport.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Walker Mortuary.
Belva M. Staas
FREEPORT -- Belva M. Staas, 90, of Freeport died Thursday evening, Sept. 2, 2004, at FHN Memorial Hospital in Freeport.
Born May 30, 1914, in Ridott, she was the daughter of Oscar and Martha (Lincoln) Weiler. She was a 1931 graduate of Freeport High School. Belva married Robert H. Staas on April 18, 1936, in Freeport.
A member of the Freeport Church of Christ, she was an organist who entertained locally. She did volunteer work, playing the organ in area nursing homes and in the FHN Memorial Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit. She also loved sewing and making quilts.
Surviving are her children, Julie Coakley of Bradenton, Fla., Richard T. (Marilee) Staas of Freeport, Juanita (Blannie) Perkins of Phoenix, Ariz., and Judith (Charles) Paluzzi of Rockford; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; one son-in-law, William Hammond of Leaf River; and one sister-in-law, Kathryn Wing of Freeport.
She was preceded in death by her husband on Dec. 8, 2003; her parents; four sisters; one brother; one foster brother; one daughter, Janice Hammond; one son, Roger Staas; one son-in-law, Mike Coakley; and one grandson, William Josef Hammond.
The service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Schwarz Funeral Home in Freeport, with Craig Suby officiating. At her request, she will be cremated. Burial will be in Lightsville Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. until time of service Tuesday at the funeral home.
Hazel K. Woods
FREEPORT -- Hazel K. Woods, 88, of Freeport died Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, at FHN Memorial Hospital.
The service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church.
Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to time of service Wednesday at the church.

SAVANNA -- Esther B. Dangel, 85, of Savanna died Monday, Sept. 6, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center in Clinton, Iowa.

Ethel Rodemeyer
FREEPORT -- Ethel M. Rodemeyer, 88, of Freeport died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2004, at FHN Memorial Hospital in Freeport.
She was born July 3, 1916, in Mount Carroll, the daughter of Earl and Grace (Garman) Keim. In 1938, Ethel and Florian F. Rodemeyer were married in Freeport.
Ethel was a graduate of Mount Carroll High School and attended Brown's Business College.
She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Surviving are her children, Stephen (Risa) Rodemeyer of Fresno, Calif., Peggy Hughes of New Berlin, Wis., and Jane (Jim) Bicksler of Dakota; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Bob Keim of Lena; and two sisters, Doris Rinehart of Rockford and Betty Birely of Morrison.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband on March 4, 1996; one sister, Lucille Lovett; and a son-in-law, Ed Hughes.
The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father John Cahill officiating. Burial will be held at St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Schwarz Funeral Home, where a prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m.
A memorial fund has been established for the American Heart Association.
Samuel Shird
PEORIA -- Samuel Shird, 60, of Peoria, formerly of Freeport, died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2004, at Methodist Medical Center in Peoria.

LENA -- Services will be held Sept. 18 for Hans "Johannes" Ziegler, 89, of Lena who died Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004, at FHN Memorial Hospital in Freeport.
Cremation rites were accorded and the memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Stockton. Visitation will be held from 10:30 a.m. to time of service at the church.
A memorial fund has been established in his name.

Ruth A. Gelwicks
MOUNT CARROLL -- Ruth Amelia Gelwicks, 91, of Mount Carroll, died on Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004 at Freeport's FHN Memorial Hospital.
She was born on Dec. 25, 1912 in York Township, the daughter of Rush W. and Anna (Smith) Carroll. She graduated from Thomson High School in 1931. She married Robert L. Gelwicks on Oct. 28, 1933, at the First Baptist Church Parsonage in Mt. Carroll. He preceded her in death on May 9, 1990.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, and of the Freedom Homemakers Club.
Ruth was a very caring person, who was always there for her friends, neighbors and family. She was a Sunday School teacher for many years and enjoyed cooking, baking canning, reading and gardening; but most of all, spending time with friends and family, especially her grandchildren.
She will be deeply missed by her surviving family members, including a son, Leo (Lois) Gelwicks of Mount Carroll; a daughter, Doris (Duane) Kruse of Lanark; five grandchildren; four step grandchildren; eleven great- grandchildren; seven step great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Carroll of Galena and Dorothy Carroll of Savanna; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Randy, on Aug. 13, 1978; and two brothers, Ivan and Robert.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mount Carroll. Internment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery, Mount Carroll.
Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. A memorial has been established for First Baptist Church.
Loyall C. Neuberger
ROCKFORD -- Loyall Charles Neuberger, 85, of Rockford passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004.
He was born July 2, 1919, in Ridott, and was a graduate of Ridott Elementary School and Freeport High School. Loyall and Eleanor Blimline at Ridott.
Loyall was employed as a tool, die and moldmaker at Micro Switch in Freeport, Draber Hardware in Middleton, Wis., and National Lock in Rockford. He also was a licensed plumber who owned Neuberger Plumbing.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in Germany. Loyall was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 998, in Freeport.
Surviving are one sister, Nadine E. Neuberger of Rockford, and a brother, Harold F. Neuberger of Ridott.
He is predeceased by parents, three brothers and one sister.
Cremation rites were accorded and a memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Fairhaven Chapel, 3470 N. Alpine in Rockford with the Rev. Norman T. Collins officiating.
Burial will be held at Ridott Cemetery at a later date.
Mary E. Schmittel
FREEPORT -- Mary E. Schmittel, 91, of Freeport, died on Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004, at Freeport Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center.
She was born on June 19, 1913 in Daysville, the daughter of William and Stella (Arbogast) Jenkin. She married Forrest B. Schmittel, who preceded her in death.
She was a former employee of Watts Publishing Co. in Mount Morris.
Mary was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Oregon. She also did private catering, and enjoyed bowling.
Survivors include a daughter, Shirley Beck Fritz of Winnebago; six grandchildren, Randall (Janice) Fritz of DeBary, Fla., Donald Fritz of Los Angeles, Pamela (Randy) Werntz of Freeport, Paula (Kerry) Meighan of Freeport, Penny (Chad) Groshans of German Valley, and Peggy Davidson of Winnebago; 17 great-grandchildren; a brother, Sam (Noima) Jenkin of Rockford; and nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Michael Fritz; two brothers; and a sister.
Private graveside services will be held at Daysville Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Schwarz Funeral Home, Freeport.
Patricia N. Hartwig
GALENA -- Patricia N. Hartwig, 58, died on Sunday at Galena-Stauss Hospital.
Visitation is scheduled for noon on Wednesday at Miller & Steinke funeral home, where arrangements are pending.
Harold D. Daughenbaugh
FREEPORT -- Harold D. Daughenbaugh, 81, of Freeport died Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, at FHN Memorial Hospital in Freeport.
He was born Sept. 21, 1922, in Stephenson County, the son of John and Florence (Brahms) Daughenbaugh.
For 43 years, Harold worked in the shipping department at Furst McNess before retiring in 1978.
He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Freeport Aerie No. 679.
Survivors include two sisters, Alice Doubler and Evelyn Green, both of Freeport; one niece, Debbie (Roger) Davis of Freeport; one nephew, Randy (Tina) Green of Freeport; and extended family, Robert and Evelyn Bouray of Freeport.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.
The service, conducted by the Freeport Eagles Club, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home, Freeport. Burial will be in Ridott Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to time of service Tuesday at the funeral home.
A memorial fund has been established in his name.

PHOENIX -- Stephen Daughenbaugh, 55, of Phoenix, Ariz., formerly of Freeport, died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004, in Phoenix.
