Armand L. Slick
SHANNON -- Armand L. Slick passed to a better world on Friday, Nov. 12, 2004. She had been a resident of Provena St. Joseph Center for more than five years.
Armand was born Jan. 21, 1916, in Mount Carroll, the daughter of Elmer and Ivy (Smith) Palmer. She attended Mount Carroll schools and graduated in 1932. She married Fred Slick April 11, 1936, in Paw Paw. She and Fred farmed in rural Shannon until they became semi-retired and moved to the village of Shannon in 1977. Fred always said, "Armand is the best hired hand in Carroll County."
Armand was a 50-year member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Shannon. As an active member of the church, she taught Sunday school for 25 years. She also served on many committees and was a member of United Methodist Women. Later she enjoyed helping with the church newspaper. Armand enjoyed quilting, crocheting and baking. She made many beautiful quilts and afghans which she shared with family and friends.
Armand is survived by sons, F. Lee (Rosemary) of Palos Heights, Larry (Ellen) of Freeport, and Gerald (Diane Perpetua) of Jupiter, Fla.; grandchildren, Wendy (Tim) Slick-Davidson of Rockford, Rachel (Guillermo) Galvan of Lombard, Greg (Katie) of Sausalito, Calif., and Kim of Newport Beach, Calif.; step-grandchildren, Adam Newman of Freeport, Aaron (Tammy) Newman of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Andrew Newman of Rockford, and Alec (Joy) Newman of Middleton, Wis.; one great-granddaughter, Hunter Marie Davidson; eight step-great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Francis Williamson of Mount Carroll and Pauline Zink of Maryland; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents; husband; three brothers; one sister; and one grandson, Captain A. Yale Slick, USMC.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bethel United Methodist Church, Shannon, with the Rev. George Woosnam officiating. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Freeport.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Hermann Funeral Home, Shannon.
A memorial fund has been established in her name.

James Bradbury Jr.
EAGLE CREEK, Ore. -- James M. Bradbury Jr., 59, of Eagle Creek, Ore., died Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004, at Resurrection Hospital in Chicago.
He was born March 20, 1945, in Savanna, the son of James and Josephine (Walston) Bradbury. On Oct. 24, 1975, James and Joyce Scace were married in Mount Morris.
Mr. Bradbury was a professional fishing tour guide and delivery driver in the Clackamas, Ore., area.
Passionate about the outdoors, he was proficient in fly tying, fishing, drawing, fish trapping and conservation efforts. He taught fly fishing through Clackamas College and appeared on television with Larry Schoenborn on "Fishing the West." Mr. Bradbury was a speaker at fishing conferences, and he was the author of two books on teaching people how to fish.
His memberships included the Association of Northwest Steelheaders, of which he served as president and vice president of the Estacada chapter.
Mr. Bradbury was a paratrooper and served in the infantry in the U.S. Army from 1962 to 1966 in the Korean War.
James was a loving husband, a wonderful father, grandfather, brother and uncle. He loved to fish, draw, teach people to fish and spend time with loved ones. He will be greatly missed.
He leaves behind his family, his wife, Joyce Bradbury; children, James Bradbury III and Tina Bradbury, both of Indiana, Daniel A. and Bradly Sedwick, Teresa Frizzell, Mary Mills, Sherry Fearn and Mark Sedwick; and 31 grandchildren, all of the Portland, Ore., area; seven brothers, Mike, Tim, Robin, David, John, Thomas and Jamie Bradbury; and three sisters, Bonnie Jones, Elizabeth Hoppe and Susan Jones.
Preceding him in death were his parents, James Sr. and Josephine Bradbury, one brother, Eugene Bradbury, and one grandson.
In his memory, it was his desire that his friends and family do not take a day off for a funeral, but that they take a day off to go fishing.

Lynn Greenfield
SPRINGFIELD, Va. -- Lynn A. Greenfield, 58, of Springfield, Va., former Forreston resident, died at Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Va.
He was born Sept. 12, 1946, in Freeport, the son of Herman J. and Lucille R. (Abels) Greenfield.
Mr. Greenfield was an FDIC bank examiner in the Princeton office. He also was a member of the U.S. Energy Commission in Washington, D.C.
After graduating from Forreston High School in 1964, he received his degree in 1969 from the University of Dubuque.
Lynn was an avid Cubs fan.
Surviving are two brothers, Harlan J. (Carolyn) Greenfield of Freeport and Loran R. (Judy) Greenfield of Forreston; one sister, Donna (Dr. David) Muyskens of Grand Rapids, Mich.; four nieces and five nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents, and sister, Lois Lynne Greenfield.
The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Forreston Grove Presbyterian Church. Burial will be at Forreston Grove Cemetery.
Visitation hours are from 9:30 a.m. Thursday to time of service at the church.
A memorial fund has been established in his name.

Douglas E. Harbers
ROCKFORD -- Douglas E. Harbers, 37, of Rockford, formerly of Freeport, died Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004, at his home in Rockford.
Born Feb. 21, 1967, in Freeport, he was the son of Edward H. and Diana K. (Dauphin) Harbers. He graduated from Freeport High School in 1985.
Mr. Harbers was a volunteer on Freeport Rural Ambulance, a paramedic for Ginders Graham Ambulance in Rockford, a volunteer fireman for Log Cabin Department of Cherry Valley Fire Department, he worked security at CherryVale, was a Rockford Park District policeman and worked security at the MetroCenter.
After his eyesight failed, he worked at the Winnebago County State's Attorney's Office with the use of a special computer and his beloved leader dog, Casey.
He celebrated his third year as a kidney recipient in July.
Surviving are his mother, Diana (Jim) Chaplin of Lake Carroll; daughter, Candace Marie Harbers of Belvidere; son, Aaron Maronde of Rockford; stepbrothers, Ronald Harbers of Nebraska, Brad (Tammy) Mellor of Rochelle and Mike (Corie) Chaplin of Indianapolis; stepsisters, Yvonne (Craig) Danekas and Beverly (Tim) O'Brien, both of Rochelle, Angie Chaplin of Western Springs, Tracy (Rick) Meisterheim of Wolverine, Mich., and Leslie Chaplin of Culver, Minn.; one aunt, Gloria (Del) Roberts of Freeport; two uncles, Charles (Paulette) Dauphin of Burns, Tenn., and Burt (Peg) Dauphin of Savanna; four cousins; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
His father, stepfather, Jim Mellor, and a nephew, Steve Harbers, preceded him in death.
The funeral service will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Walker Mortuary. Burial will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at Walker Mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in his name.

Joshua D. Kahl
FREEPORT -- Joshua D. Kahl, 27, of Freeport died Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004, at Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford.
Joshua was born April 10, 1977, in Freeport, the son of Kurt and Deanna (Farringer) Kahl.
He attended Freeport schools and enjoyed fishing, poker, darts and mud volleyball.
Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Deanna and Jay Pacek of Freeport; his father and stepmother, Kurt and Sherrie Kahl of Freeport; one sister, Treasure Kahl of Freeport; one brother, Jason Farringer of Freeport; maternal grandparents, Ron and Maryann Farringer of Freeport; paternal grandparents, Dale and Nancy Veach of Buena Vista, Ark.; aunts, uncles, cousins and numerous friends.
The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Schwarz Funeral Home in Freeport with Pastor Keith Boyer of Crossroads Community Church officiating. Burial will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Freeport.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
A memorial fund has been established in his name.

Teresa A. Schwartz
FREEPORT -- Teresa Ann Schwartz, 46, died Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004, at her home.
Born Dec. 30, 1957, in Freeport, she was the daughter of Robert Gene and Eloise (Morris) Bawinkel. On May 18, 1991, she married Carl Schwartz in Freeport.
She worked for Quiznos from the time of its opening in Freeport. She loved being surrounded by her family and friends and her two dogs. She was an avid Beanie Babies collector.
Survivors include her husband, Carl; two daughters, Natalie and Haley Schwartz, both of Freeport; one son, Miles (fiancee, Sara) Schwartz of Freeport; one granddaughter, Elizabeth Schwartz of Milton, Wis.; one grandson, Gaige Schwartz of Lena; one sister, Sylvia (Steve) Bailey of Arvada, Colo.; one stepsister, Pat (Jim) Painter of Florida; her mother, Eloise Zumdahl of Freeport, and her father, Robert (Carol) Bawinkel of Cedarville.
Her grandparents preceded her in death.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Chapel of Peace at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Freeport, with the Rev. John Hollis of the First Church of the Nazarene officiating. Burial will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Walker Mortuary.
A memorial fund has been established in her name.

Dorothy Wohlford
FORT WORTH, Texas -- Dorothy J. Wohlford, 83, of Forth Worth, Texas, formerly of Freeport, died Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004, at Baylor All Saints Medical Center in Fort Worth.
Born March 22, 1921, in Freeport, she was the daughter of Floyd and Alice (Rockow) Snyder.
Dorothy grew up on a farm on Henderson Road and attended Freeport High School, graduating with the class of 1940. Dorothy married Willard Wohlford on March 9, 1947.
Mrs. Wohlford was a secretary for 13 years at Bankers Mutual Life in Freeport and for 17 years at Bank of Commerce in Fort Worth.
Dorothy's joys in life were her church, attending Embury United Methodist Church in Freeport and First United Methodist Church in Fort Worth, along with traveling, reading, her competitive spirit at the bridge table and visiting her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Surviving are two sons, Gregory (Francine) Wohlford of Bloomington and Dean (Rev. Becky Hebert) Wohlford of Norman, Okla.; two granddaughters, one grandson, three great-grandsons and twin great-granddaughters.
Her parents and one brother, Martin Snyder, preceded her in death.
A celebration of her life will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Walker Mortuary in Freeport, with the Rev. D. Robin Benson of Embury United Methodist Church officiating.
Visitation will be 10 a.m. Friday until time of service at the funeral home. Burial will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Freeport.
Considering her joys in life, a memorial fund has been established in her name for Freeport Public Library.

Robert Cottral
HANOVER -- Robert Cottral, 78, of Hanover died Sunday, Nov. 14, 2004, at Elizabeth Nursing Home.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John Catholic Church in Hanover. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Law-Jones Funeral Home in Hanover.
A memorial fund has been established.

Alice Hummermeier
FREEPORT -- Alice Sophia Hummermeier, age 97, formerly of rural Pearl City and Davis, passed away Monday, Nov. 15, 2004, at Provena St. Joseph Nursing Center in Freeport. She was born Jan. 22, 1907, in Eleroy to Fred and Emeline (Hutmacher) Deuth. Alice married Oscar E. Hummermeier on March 5, 1929, in Eleroy, at the home of the bride. Alice and Oscar farmed on the family farm near Pearl City until retiring in 1971, when they moved to Lake Summerset in Davis. Mrs. Hummermeier was a member of Salem United Church of Christ and was active in church and children's Sunday school. She enjoyed bowling, spending time in her garden, traveling around the world with her husband, and making meals for her family. Surviving are one daughter, Jean (John) Kirby of Carmel, Ind.; six grandsons, David (Valerie) Woessner of Trumbull, Conn., Robert (Julie) Woessner of Sterling, Dale (Lanna) Hummermeier of Ovid, Colo., John (Nancy) Kirby IV of Carmel, Michael Hummermeier of Pearl City and Curt (Shelly) Dambman of Milledgeville; one granddaughter, Debra (David) Winter of Sun Prairie, Wis.; 17 great-grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, Sharon Hummermeier of Pearl City; and one son-in-law, Richard Dambman of Milledgeville. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; two brothers, George Mahlon Deuth and Karl Frederick Deuth; one son, William F. Hummermeier; and one daughter, Lois A. Dambman. The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Salem United Church of Christ. Officiating clergy will be the Rev. Randal Nicholas. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Leamon Funeral Home in Lena. A memorial fund has been established in her name.

Charlotte A. Devine
MOUNT CARROLL -- Charlotte A. Devine, 84, of Mount Carroll died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2004, at Morrison Community Hospital.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home. Visitation is from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday.
A memorial fund has been established.

Dr. Erich Awender
FREEPORT -- Dr. Erich Awender, 78, of Freeport died Friday, Nov. 19, 2004, at his home.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. Burial will be at the Oakland Cemetery & Mausoleum.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Walker Mortuary, where at 8 p.m. there will be a prayer service.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in his name.

Anthony Basso
GALENA -- Anthony L. Basso, 64, of Galena died Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque, Iowa.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at the Miller & Steinke Funeral Home in Galena, where arrangements are pending.

Frances Brueckmann
MOUNT CARROLL -- Frances F. Brueckmann, 89, of Mount Carroll died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2004, at Big Meadows Nursing Home in Savanna.
A private family inurnment will be held at the Cook Cemetery in Cook, Minn., at a later date. Arrangements were made at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home in Mount Carroll.
A memorial fund has been established in her name at the National Bank in Mount Carroll.

Albertus Glasker
SCALES MOUND -- Albertus H. "Bert" Glasker, 84, of Scales Mound died Friday, Nov. 19, 2004, at the Elizabeth Nursing Home.
Mr. Glasker was born Dec. 26, 1919, in Menominee Township in Jo Daviess County, the son of Bernard and Agnes (Tranel) Glasker. He married Calista Koehler on April 25, 1944, at St. Mary's Church in Galena.
He and his wife farmed in the area most of their lives until moving to Scales Mound in 1975. He was of Holy Trinity Parish and served as an usher.
He later worked for Lemfco Foundry in Galena for 10 years and, after that, worked part-time at various jobs. Bert loved to play cards, especially euchre.
Survivors include his wife, Calista Glasker; one daughter, Linda (Marvin) Brimeyer of Sherrill, Iowa; one son, James (Mary Jane) Glasker of Scales Mound; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Norma (Floyd) Zeal; and three brothers, Arnold, Clarence and Laverne Glasker.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Holy Trinity Church in Scales Mound, with the Rev. Christopher Kuhn officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery in Galena.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at the Miller & Steinke Funeral Home in Scales Mound. There will also be a parish scripture service at 6 p.m. today.
The family wishes to express a sincere thank you to the staff at ManorCare Health Services and 3-West at Mercy Medical Center, both in Dubuque, and the Elizabeth Nursing Home for the special care given to Bert.
