Maria T. Duarte
Maria T. Duarte, 93, of Savanna, died Monday, February 28, 2005 at Mercy Medical Center, Clinton, Iowa.
Funeral Services were Monday, March 7, 2005 at the Rose Hill Mortuary, Whittier, California.
Maria was born February 18, 1912 the daughter of Andres and Petrona (Medrano) Tobar in Guatemala. She worked as a seamstress making parachutes during the WWII era in Guatemala. Maria worked for a clothing manufacturer in California for 40 years. She moved to Savanna in May 2004 to live with her daughter. Maria always commented on the kindness of the people in Savanna. She attended the Assembly of God Church in Savanna. She loved the unity and atmosphere within the church. Maria enjoyed reading the Bible, knitting, crocheting, and gardening roses.
Maria will be deeply missed by her daughter, Alicia (Alex) Lopez of Savanna; a grandson, Daniel (Priscilla) Lopez of Savanna; a granddaughter, Auroa (Michael) Balis of Savanna; 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
Lawrence Wiebers
Lawrence Wiebers, age 86, of Lanark passed away Friday, March 11, 2005 at home.
Lawrence was born August 18,1918 in Forest Park, son of Frederick Johann and Martha Louella Holzhauer Wiebers. He graduated in 1937 from Oak Park High School. He met his bride-to-be Betty Plum in Dixon, while vacationing in the summer with relatives on the Rock River. They were married on June 7, 1941 in the Church of the Good Shepherd in Oak Park. After their marriage, Lawrence and Betty spent the war years in Watertown, NY, where Lawrence worked for New York Airbrake. In 1948, they moved to Lanark when Forster Brother, a manufacturer of model aircraft engines, offered him a position. In 1974, Lawrence bought the company, which also produced reloading equipment, and precision aircraft parts, and renamed it Wieber's Industries.
Lawrence was a skilled tool and die maker, wood carver, mechanic, and a wonderful whistler. He spent several happy years of retirement whittling wood, a hobby he enjoyed since his boyhood. He was known for his artistic ability, both in carving and painting ducks, fish, and other creatures, designing whimsical toys for his grandchildren, and also for creating "found object art" from flotsam and jetsam found on the Gulf beaches of Florida during his many vacations there with his family. He was also an expert at finding and extracting unwanted snakes, fixing absolutely anything, and sharpening knives. Lawrence enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, flying, playing cards, having popcorn and Coke in Sunday nights, and eating his wife's excellent cooking. He did not enjoy imprecision or haphazard behavior of any kind.
Lawrence served for several years on the Carroll County Sheriff's Department Radio Patrol, the Lanark School Board, and as Lanark's mayor. His most unique contributions to civic improvement are the "Thou shalt not park here" signs on Locust Street.
Lawrence is survived by his wife Betty; one sister, Louella Kraft of San Anselmo, California; four daughters, Laurie (Ambrose) Gaines of Placida, Florida, Jennifer (Steve) Schneider of Scottsdale, Arizona, Melissa (Brad) Finifrock of Cherry Valley, and Amy (Robert) Ruch of Lanark; twelve grandchildren, Aaron (Holly), Stephanie, Kristin, Laurie, Katie, and Tim Schneider, Sarah (Kyle) Ford, Zachary and Liz Finifrock, Adam (Mayumi), Louisa, and Anna Ruch; and four great-grandchildren, Caleb Taylor, Owen, and Stuart Ford, and Zion Schneider.
His parents, and one brother, Frederick Wiebers precede Lawrence in death. He will be greatly missed by his entire family, including his devoted canine companion Lili. A memorial service will be held at the Lanark United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 16. Russell-Frank Funeral Home in Lanark prepared the arrangements.
Harold Edmund Roggatz
Harold Edmund Roggatz, 80, of Mt. Carroll, died Wednesday, February 23, 2005 at his home.
A Memorial Service with Military Honors conducted by the Savanna Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2223, were held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, February 27, 2005 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. Reverend Mark Harkness of the Mt. Carroll United Methodist Church officiated.
Harold was born July 6, 1924 in Chicago, the son of James and Evelyn (Deutscher) Roggatz. Harold married Helen Martha Szymaniak, on September 21, 1946 in Chicago. He served in the United States Army during World War II. Until retirement, Harold worked as a machinist for Economy Engineering of Bensenville, Illinois. He very much enjoyed bowling, dancing, roller-skating and Big Band music. Most of all he loved and enjoyed his family and friends.
Harold will be deeply missed by his wife, Helen; one brother, Raymond Roggatz; three daughters; Luanne (Tim) Burke of Elmhurst, Lorna (Roger) May of Mt. Carroll and Pam (Nick) Naples of Mt. Carroll; one son, Rick of Mt. Carroll; nine grandchildren, Marty, Valerie, Jocelyn, Dan, Amy, Amanda, Chris, Eric and Rob. His parents and two brothers, precede Harold in death.
Hobert E. Smith
Hobert E. Smith, 88, of Morrison died Wednesday, February 23, 2005 at his home.
Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 26, 2005 at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll. Officiating was Reverend Robert Schubert of the Center Hill United Brethren Church, rural Mt. Carroll. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Mt. Carroll. Visitation were from 5-7:30 p.m. Friday, February 25, 2005 at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to the family in Hobert's memory.
Hobert was born on July 27, 1916 the son of Emery and Pearl (Sisler) Smith in Woodland Township, rural Mt. Carroll. He attended the Mt. Carroll High School. Hobert married Thelma Fulton on October 9, 1937 in Clinton, Iowa. He began farming with his father at a young age. Hobert worked as an upholsterer for a number of years. As a hobby, he would buy used furniture, reupholster it, and sell it for a profit. Hobert worked for General Electric as a press operator for 18 years, retiring in 1982. He enjoyed cooking and traveling. Hobert was known for canning meat and making homemade noodles for his family and friends. He and his wife enjoyed traveling all over the United States. Hobert was a member of the Center Hill United Brethren Church.
Hobert will be deeply missed by his wife Thelma Smith of Morrison; one son, Lyle Smith of Morrison; two daughters, Judy (Larry) Heath of Morrison and Diane (Bob) Frankfather of Rock Falls; 19 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren with two great-grandchildren on the way. His parents, a daughter, Carol Meyers; a son, Gary Smith; a brother, Wayne Smith; and a great-grandaughter, Jordynn Eckel, precede Hobert in death.
Ronald L. Shafer
Ronald L. Shafer, age 60, of Milledgeville died Tuesday, February 22, 2005 in his home.
Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 26, 2005 at the Russell-Frank Funeral Home in Lanark, Elder Russell Eggers officiated. Burial was in the Lanark Cemetery. Visitations were from 5-7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. A memorial has been established in his memory.
Ronald was born March 16, 1944 the son of Earl and Margie (Buntjer) Shafer. He was a graduate of Lanark high School. He was a retired employee of Northwestern Steel & Wire Co. in Sterling. He was associated with the Jehovah's Witnesses. He served with the Illinois National Guard.
Ronald will be deeply missed by his three children, Eric Shafer (Cindy Donald) of Stafford, VA, Tech-Sgt Nicole Coleman of Malmstrom AFB Great Falls, MT, and Patrick Shafer (Jennifer Foster) of Monroe, WI; five grandchildren; his mother, Margie Shafer of Lanark; one brother, Eldon (Cindy) Shafer of Belvidere; and one sister, Dawn (Skip) Bitner of Lanark. His father precedes Ronald in death.
Jesse L. Plumer
Jesse L. Plumer, age 86, of Madison, WI, beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend of countless people, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, February 17, 2005 at St. Mary's Hospital.
Jesse was born on June 29, 1918 in Chadwick. He married Betty Wakeford on June 8, 1946, in Delavan, WI. He and his wife, Betty, lived in Madison for the past 46 years in the same residence in the University Hill Farms. Jesses graduated from Milledgeville High School, Milledgeville, in 1935. Jesse worked as a licensed plumber from 1958, until his retirement in 1986. He attained his master plumber's license in 1965. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II with the 322 Field Artillery Battalion, 83rd Infantry Division, achieving the rank of tech 5, and received an honorable discharge on December 5, 1945. He was a member of Plumber's Local #75, served five years as commander of the American Legion post in Milledgeville, the "Wednesday Breakfast Club," the Fish Lake Homer Owner's Association, and until recently enjoyed regular participation at the Westside Princeton Club where he made many friends.
Jesse is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Betty Plumer; four sons, Ronald (Patty Schrieber), Michael, David (Peggy) and Jon (Chris); seven grandchildren, Eric (fiancée Allison Mott), Bradley, Jennifer, Katherine, Angela, Lindsey and Megan; and his beloved pet dogs, Darby and Augie. His parents, Jesse F. Plumer and A. Iona Haynes; sister, Helen Hamilton; and brothers, Neal and Daniel, precede Jesse in death.
Funeral services were held at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Mineral Point Rd., Madison, WI, and were conducted by Monsignor Ken Fiedler. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made in Jesse's name to either the Dane County Humane Society of the American Lung Association of Wisconsin.
Betty L. Miller
Betty L. Miller, 71, of Savanna, died Saturday, February 26, 2005 at FHN Memorial Hospital, Freeport.
A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 2, 2005 at the First United Methodist Church, Savanna. Reverend Tom Moe will officiate. Visitation will be from 4-8:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 1, 2005 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home in Savanna. There will also be a visitation at the First United Methodist Church one-hour prior to the funeral service. Burial will be in the Savanna Township Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the family in Betty's memory.
Betty was born October 10, 1933, the daughter of Asa and Julia (James) Barr in Hammond, Illinois. She attended Savanna High School. Betty earned her Associates Degree from Clinton County Community College. Betty married Allen Miller on December 10, 1994 at the First Presbyterian Church in Savanna. She was the head of Housekeeping at the Savanna City Hospital. Betty also owned a housekeeping business in Savanna following her retirement from the hospital.
Betty was a member of the United Methodist Church in Savanna. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. Family gatherings during the holidays were always special to her. She enjoyed working with ceramics, doing crossword puzzles, and was an avid reader. Betty liked watching birds and wildlife while at home. She enjoyed traveling to various places in the United States, especially to the beach.
Betty will be deeply missed by her husband, Allen Miller of Savanna; five sons, Mike (Toni) Connor of Antioch; Danny (Linda) Connor of Plano, TX; Pat (Deb) Connor of Savanna; Scott (Tricia) Almquist of Savanna; and Brian (Silvia) Hartman of McKinney, TX; one daughter, Lori (Ron) Miller of Savanna; 13 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Charles Barr and Lawerence Barr of Fulton; Glen Barr of Clinton, IA; two sisters, Virginia Shaw of Aurora, and Joann (Philip) Remrey of Savanna. Her daughter, Brenda Connor; a great-granddaughter, April Connor; and a brother, William Barr, precede Betty in death.
Melvia E. Law
Melvia E. Law, 91, of Savanna, died peacefully at her home, Monday, February 28, 2005.
Funeral services for Melvia will be held Thursday, March 3, 2005 at 2:30 a.m. in Law-Jones Funeral Home in Savanna. Pastor Robert Seiler, the Chaplain of Mercy Medical Center, Clinton, Iowa will officiate. Burial will be in the Savanna TWP Cemetery, Savanna. Visitation for Melvia will be Wednesday, March 2, 2005, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Law-Jones Funeral Home.
Melvia was born March 19, 1913 in Savanna, the Daughter of Earl and Catherine (Roberts) Solt. On June 27, 1931 Melvia was united in marriage to Larence Law. Lawrence passed away October 16, 1986.
Melvia worked at the Garment Factory in Savanna for sixteen years, she also worked at the Savanna Army Depot during WWII. She later worked at the Eaton Corp for four years, retiring in 1970. Melvia enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing, knitting, crocheting, and cabinet making.
Melvia will be deeply missed by her three sons; Lawrence Jr. "Larry" (Shirley) of Clinton, Iowa, Gerald Law of Algoma, Wisconsin and Kenneth Law of Seffner, Florida, ten grandchildren; eight great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren, and one sister; Berniece Albright of Savanna.
Her husband; parents; three sisters, three brothers, and one great grandchild, precede Melvia in death.
Marian J. Neis
Marian J. Neis, 96, of the Alverno Nursing Home, Clinton, Iowa, died Sunday, February 27, 2005 in Mercy Hospital North, Clinton.
Funeral services for Marian will be held Thursday, March 3, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. at the Law-Jones Funeral Home in Savanna. Pastor Robert Schubert of the Center Hill United Church of the Brethren, Mt. Carroll will officiate. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Mt. Carroll. Visitation for Marian will be Wednesday, March 2, 2005, from 4:00-7:00 p.m. in the Funeral Home.
Marian was born September 23, 1908 in rural Mt. Carroll, the daughter of Chester and Hattie (Smith) Gillogly. Marian graduated from Mt. Carroll High School class of 1926. On July 21, 1927 in the Mt Carroll Methodist Church Parsonage, Marian was united in marriage to Earl F. Neis. Earl passed away September 29, 1985. She was a homemaker, worked at Savanna City Hospital, the National Lock Corp. and sold Avon Products for many years. Marian was a faithful member of Center Hill Brethren Church, the Carroll County DAR Association, the Carroll County Republican party, the Home- maker Circle and WRC. Another interest she had was genealogy, (putting together a family history). Marian and husband, Earl spent many hours placing flags on the graves of Veteran's for recognized days of Honor.
Marian will be deeply missed by her son; James Neis of Savanna, two daughters; Shirley (Larry) Law, and Carole (Ronald) Pease, both of Clinton, nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren, and one sister; Evelyn Hawes of Pearl City; three sisters in-law, Ruth Davis of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Gladys Neis of Lutz, Florida and Jewel Neis of Birmingham, Alabama and one brother in-law.
Her parents; husband, Earl; one grandson, Tommy and two great-grandchildren, Rae Ann Naeve and Dana Clark Wing, precede Marian in death.
Vernice M. Willis
Vernice M. Willis, age 79, of Savanna, passed away on Monday, February 28, 2005 at Mercy Medical Center North, Clinton, Iowa.
A Funeral Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 4, 2005 at the First United Methodist Church of Savanna. Reverend Tom Moe will be officiating. Burial will be in the Savanna Township Cemetery, Savanna. Friends may call from 5:00 7:00 p.m. Thursday, March 3 and 10:00 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 4 at the First United Methodist Church. Memorials may be given in Vernice's name to the First United Methodist Church of Savanna.
Vernice was born March 1, 1925 in Herscher, the daughter of Richard H. and Irene J. (Dyer) Lane. She was a Herscher High School Graduate with the Class of 1943. Vernice married Donald Ivan Willis September 15, 1946 in Herscher. He died March 19, 1993 in Savanna.
Vernice's first job was at Myer Furnace Company, Peoria. She later worked as the secretary for the Savanna School District #300 Superintendent for many years until retirement. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Savanna, the Savanna VFW Auxiliary, Savanna Women of the Moose, and a past Secretary and Parliamentarian of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. She is a past president of the Savanna Junior Women's Club and member of the Savanna Wives Club. Vernice worked with the Savanna Rotary Club on their yearly Scholastic Banquet. She was a Charter member of the Savanna Army Depot Wives Club. Vernice helped coordinate every Savanna Army Depot Change of Command Reception.
Vernice was very generous and she especially loved her community and "loved to live, and lived to love".
Vernice will be deeply missed by two sons, Richard O. (Nancy) Willis of Clinton, Iowa and Gregory L. (Diane) Willis of McAlester, Oklahoma; her daughter, Jorene M. (Joseph) Lieb Willis of Galena; eight grandchildren, Ian, Kirk, Jennifer and Beth Ann Willis, Faye (Lucas) Reinhart, and Jacob, Joy Donna, and Julia Fern Lieb; a brother-in-law, Warren (Faye) Nelson of Peoria, Illinois; two sisters-in-law, Louise Willis of Peoria and Audrey S. Willis of Fort Worth, Texas; a special nephew, Scott Christian Nelson of Des Moines, Iowa; and a special friend, Roberta Loomis of Savanna, and many nieces and nephews. Her parents, her husband, her sister, Fern, and her twin brother, Verner, precede Vernice in death.
Vivian Marie Mullen
Vivian Marie Mullen, age 92, of Savanna, passed away Wednesday, March 8, 2006 in Mercy Medical Center-North, Clinton, Iowa.
Funeral Services were held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, March 11, 2006 at Law-Jones Funeral Home in Savanna. Pastor Michael Jones of York Baptist Church, Thomson officiated. Vivian was born on April 30, 1913, the daughter of Franklin and Mary (Thulen) Koser in Savanna, Illinois. She married George Martin VonEssen, that union brought forth four children, he passed away June 30, 1948. She later married Ora Lloyd "Moon" Mullen, he passed away on February 5, 1977.
Vivian worked for ELKAY Manufacturing in Savanna. She was a past member of the Savanna Women of the Moose. Vivian enjoyed fishing, going shopping and visiting with friends.
Vivian will be dearly missed by her daughter, Georgia Reagan of Savanna; two sons, George (Linda) VonEssen and Jerry (Penny) VonEssen both of Savanna; fifteen grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; one sister, Bernice Shackelford of Savanna; and one brother, Leonard Koser of Savanna. Both husbands; one son, Eugene VonEssen; and one great granddaughter, precede Vivian in death.
Daniel J. O'Neal
Daniel J. O'Neal, age 48, of Savanna, died Saturday, March 11, 2006 at Mercy Medical Center-North in Clinton, Iowa.
A Funeral Service was held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, March 17, 2006 at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. Father Moises Apostol officiated. Friends could call from 2-3 p.m. Friday, March 17, 2006 prior to the Funeral Service. Inurnment will take place at a later date.

Daniel was born June 10, 1958 the son of Laurence and Arlene (Belander) O'Neal, Jr. in Savanna. He attended school in Toledo, Ohio graduating in 1977. Daniel was a man of many talents; he was certified as a Bartender and in Janitorial Services.
He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Savanna. Daniel had a great sense of humor, he loved to joke around, and he enjoyed playing cards, camping, fishing, watching sports on television, playing pool and a collector of interesting things.
Daniel will be deeply missed by his mother, Arlene of Savanna; three brothers, his twin brother, Dennis O'Neal, Chuck O'Neal and Michael (Helen) O'Neal all of Savanna; two sisters; Kathleen (Ed) Majszak of Perrysburg, Ohio and Christina (Bryan) Lewandowski of Toledo, Ohio; many nieces and nephews. His father, Laurence, precedes him in death.
