At age 55 he started the horse farm, now called Lakeview Lorance Stables, on the 200 acre spread in Laura, Ill., where he had given up on raising cattle, said his daughter Janet Walter. On the farm, 30 miles northwest of Peoria, he carved out two tracks and took his horses swimmig in a pond behind a rowboat. "He was very competitive and he had a very talented hand as a trainer," his daughter said. Mr. Lorance once won the Breeder of the Year award from the U.S. Harness Writers Association. He was the member of the Illinois Standardbred Owners Breeders Association. As a driver, Mr. Lorance continued to win races through his 70s. Once he hit 80, racetrack officials ordered him off his sulky citing regulations."They called him up and said,"You're too old to race," his daughter said. "But that did not keep him from racing at county fairs." Ben Wessel, a judge at Balmoral Park racetrack, said Mr. Lorance "saw technological changes in equipment, changes in the construction of tracks, changes in the equipment that the horse might wear, and in the shoeing. It's remarkable the changes he saw through his lifetime. Yet he remained competitive throughout the changes." Eleven year ago, for example, at age 79, Mr. Lorance raced Never Will Touch to victory in the Illinois State Fair Colt Stakes trotting event in Springfield. Overall as a driver, mr. Lorrance came home with 196 wins, 144 second places and 118 thirds in 1, 078 starts. His horses set several world records and raced at Chicago area tracks such as Balmoral Park, Maywood and Hawthorne. The Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame inducted him in 1986. But as Mr. Lorance told the Springfield State Journal-Register in 1982, "Records are nice, but your're out there to make some money." All told he earned $639,023 as a driver, his daughter said. Mr. Lorance was born in Laura on the family farm. He received a diploma from Williamsfield High School after four years of commuting 7 miles each way by horse. The horse farm is still in family hands, and his family is still into horses. His daughters run Lakeview Lorance Stables.
