Stuart G.P. Small, professor emeritus of classics, died
July 27 [1992]. He was 76.
A resident of Wilmette, Small taught at Northwestern for 37 years and was chairman of the classics department from 1975 to 1978.
He graduated summa cum laude from Bowdoin College in 1938 where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He received his doctoral degree in classics in 1942 from the University of Cincinnati.
Small served in the Army Air Corps as a liaison officer with the French in North Africa and Europe, and taught classics at Marietta College from 1946-47 when he returned. He also taught at Yale University for eight years before coming to Northwestern in 1955. He retired from Northwestern in 1986, but continued to teach part-time.
Small wrote two books, RMarcus Argentarius, A Poet of the Greek AnthologyS and RCatullus: A ReaderUs Guide to the Poems.S He also wrote scholarly papers on Virgil, Homer and Horace.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; three sons, David, Gregory and Thomas; and three grandchildren.
