Carlisle "Vandy" Christie, 55, who served as men's tennis coach for eight seasons and director of athletic development for six years, died
Sept. 30 [1992] at Evanston Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Christie, who graduated from Northwestern in 1959, tutored the Wildcats' men's tennis program from 1976 through 1983. His teams compiled a record of 125-94 (.571) and placed as high as second in the Big Ten Championships on three occasions (1979, 1980 and 1983). Christie's 1983 squad posted a Northwestern single-season best 23 dual match victories.
Christie relinquished his coaching duties in 1984 and became Northwestern's chief athletic fundraiser. He retired from that position in 1990 due to his failing health.
Christie was an outstanding tennis player as a collegian. He was the Wildcats' No. 1 singles player as a senior in 1959, playing for Northwestern Coach Claire Riessen. As a sophomore in 1957 and junior in 1958, he helped the Wildcats and Coach Paul Bennett place second and fourth, respectively, in the Big Ten Championships.
Christie worked in the insurance business in the Chicago area for 16 years before returning to work for his alma mater.
He is survived by his wife, Audrey; and sons, Vandy Jr. and John; and a sister, Nancy C. Carney.
A memorial service was held Oct. 5 at Alice Millar Chapel on the Evanston campus.
