He worked closely with physicians at the Medical School and in 1988, the department of medicine recognized Mr. Perry with the Distinguished Service Award, citing him for his "wise counsel" and as "a model of the highest performance that our legal system can achieve."

Mr. Perry was active in civic affairs in Evanston for more than 20 years, including service as a member of the Board of Education for Evanston Township High School District #202. He was vice president of the board from 1989 to 1991.

"Jim was a loyal and loving husband, father, and son; he was a superb lawyer and stalwart friend," said Vice President and General Counsel Michael C. Weston, an associate for more than two decades. "The loss to his family, his friends, and Northwestern University is incalculable."

A native of East Chicago, Ind., Mr. Perry graduated from Indiana University in 1964 and received a law degree from IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law in 1972.
