Kenneth V. Zwiener, 91, of Winnetka, Life Trustee and former chair of the Board of Trustees, died
Jan. 13 [1997]. Mr. Zwiener was the retired chair and chief executive office of Harris Bank.
Mr. Zwiener completed a program of study at Northwestern's Institute for Management in 1951 and was awarded an honorary doctor of laws degree from Northwestern in 1976. He became a University trustee in 1954 and served as chair of the Board of Trustees from 1970 to 1975, becoming a Life Trustee in 1975. He was a member of the John Evans Club, Northwestern Associates, the Campaign for Medical Research and the Life Sciences Executive Committee. His late wife, Helen, was a member of the Women's Board.
A graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, Mr. Zwiener joined the San Francisco office of Harris Bank as a bond salesman at the start of the Depression.
Reassigned to the bank's Chicago office, he moved into securities analysis, becoming an expert on financing for the petroleum industry, public utilities and municipal bonds. Mr. Zwiener became president of Harris Bank in 1955 and chair in 1963. He served as chief executive officer from 1955 until his retirement in 1971.
Mr. Zwiener served on the advisory council of the Federal Reserve System and the board of directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago.
He is survived by a son, Kenneth Jr.; three grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
