Moody E. Prior, 95, of Evanston, professor emeritus of English, died Oct. 25 [1996] at the Wagner Health Center in Evanston after a long illness.

Born in Fatsa, Turkey, in 1901, Mr. Prior came to the United States in 1906 and became a naturalized citizen in 1914. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Northwestern in 1923 and 1924, respectively. He received a doctoral degree from the University of Chicago in 1930.

Professor Prior, an authority on Shakespeare, joined Northwestern as an instructor in English in 1924, serving on the faculty until his retirement in 1969. He was the John C. Shaffer Professor of the Humanities and English from 1948 to 1969 and also served as dean of the Graduate School from 1951 to 1964.

At Northwestern, Mr. Prior established Northwestern University Press in 1956 and served as its first president. He served as president of the Association of Graduate Schools in 1961-62.

In 1968, he was awarded the Northwestern University Alumni Medal, the highest honor given to Northwestern graduates.

He was appointed by the Rockefeller Foundation in 1966 as special consultant to the Office of the Ministry of Education of Thailand to assist in the organization of the graduate program for the five universities in Bangkok.

Mr. Prior was the author of "Science and the Humanities," "The Language of Tragedy" and "The Drama of Power: Studies in Shakespeare's History Plays."

He is survived by his wife, Carlene, and a sister, Electra Cryer of Evanston.
