A memorial service for Ulysses "Duke" Jenkins, 70, assistant dean of African-American Student Affairs, will be held at 6 p.m. Oct. 26 at the Second Baptist Church, 1717 Benson St., Evanston.

Mr. Jenkins died in his Chicago home Sept. 25 [1996] of cancer.

During his 17 years at Northwestern, Mr. Jenkins advised African- American students.

"He told stories continually about life and spirituality," said Joeffrey Trimmingham, a 1989 graduate of the College of Arts and Sciences. "He tried to help people realize life's experiences were tied directly to their spirituality."

Mr. Jenkins founded cultural programs including "Musical Evening with Our Elders," which tried to bridge the generation gap by bringing together older jazz, blues and gospel musicians and students.

Before joining Northwestern in 1979, he was a faculty member at Malcolm X College and an affiliate scholar at the University of Ife-Ife in Nigeria. Based on his research on Ife divination, he wrote a book, "African-American Religion and the African-American Church," in 1978.

Mr. Jenkins received an undergraduate degree from William Penn College; studied anthropology at the University of Hamburg; and earned his Ph.D. in anthropology at the Union Institute through Antioch College.

Survivors include his wife, Nella; one son, Chuka; three daughters, Sharon Jenkins-Collins, Tatjana Jenkins and AdŽkumbi Jenkins; nine grandchildren; and two brothers, Joseph and Gilbert.

The family has established a scholarship fund in his name. Donations may be made in care of Jerre Michelin, African-American Student Affairs, 1914 Sheridan Road, Evanston, Ill. 60208-4010.
