Robert J. Menges, 59, of Evanston, professor of education and social policy, died April 14 [1998] in his office.

A memorial service featuring a musical reminiscence was held April 21 at Alice Millar Chapel on the Evanston campus, followed by a reception. Interment was private.

Contributions in his name can be made to the Robert J. Menges Jazz Scholarship Fund at the School of Music.

Mr. Menges, who joined Northwestern in 1972, served as director of the school's Center for the Teaching Professions. Widely known for his contributions to the field of teaching in higher education, he had recently completed a draft manuscript for a book on his research project about newly hired faculty.

"Bob Menges was a highly respected researcher, an excellent teacher and a good friend to all who knew and worked with him," said Penelope Peterson, dean of the School of Education and Social Policy. "He will be greatly missed."

His research led to publication of the book "Learning from Students: Early Term Student Feedback," published in 1995 by the National Center on Postsecondary Teaching, Learning & Assessment. Mr. Menges served as director of the center's Faculty and Instruction Research Program, which was headquartered at Northwestern.

Mr. Menges was a member of the faculty at the University of Illinois from 1967 to 1972 before joining Northwestern.

Mr. Menges received a bachelor's degree from Gettysburg College in 1960. He did graduate study at the University of Chicago Divinity School in 1960-61. He earned a master's degree in general psychology from Boston University in 1963 and a doctoral degree in college teaching (psychology) from the Columbia University Teachers College in 1979.

Survivors include his wife, Gay; two sons, Jon and David; and two grandchilden, Gabrielle and Christian.
