Jeffey Hart Yates
Jeffrey Hart (Sheley) Yates died January 6, 2002 in Winchester, Virginia.
He was born August 13, 1948 in Pinckneyville, the son of Matt and Roberta Sheley. He took the Yates name after his mother married
Joseph Yates of DuQuoin. He was raised in DuQuoin, spending most of his life with Joe and Roberta Yates.
Mr. Yates lived in Charlestown, Vest Virginia and owned PROTECH which did home testing and mitigation for Radon testing. His company did business in numerous states.
He is survived by a son, Samuel Lawrence Yates of Charlestown, West Virginia; half-brother, Jan yates of DuQuoin; step-brother, Joe Yates of Pinckneyville; step-children, Michael Clarke of Martinsburg, West Virginia and Angela Clarke Yates of Tuscon, Arizona; four grandchildren, Tim Aaron Yates, Cienna Nicole Heckman, Isabella Renee Heckman and Tristin Michael Clarke.
Mr. Yates had been in failing health for the past several years and passed away as the result of a stroke.
Wilfred J. Buschschulte
Wilfred J. 'Willie' Buschschulte, 67, of Murphysboro, formerly of DuQuoin, passed away at 5:40 p.m. on Friday, February 15, 2002 at his residence.
Mr. Buschschulte was a construction welder for the Boilermakers. He was a member of VFW Post 513, the N.R.A. and Pinckneyville Coon Club.
He was born December 1, 1934 in Pinckneyville, the son of Edward and Dollie (Bird) Buschschulte. He married
Rosemary Robinson on April 24, 1989 in Las Vegas, Nev.
Surviving are his wife, Rosemary Buschschulte of Murphysboro; daughter, Rhonda Stowers of DuQuoin; sons, Seth Buschschulte of Murphysboro, Barry Buschschulte of Pinckneyville, David Buschschulte of Wood River, Ill., Eric Buschschulte of Independance, Mo. and Quinton Buschschulte of Independance, Mo.; mother, Dollie Hall of Jasper, Ga. and sister, Shirley Rollins of Jasper, Ga.
He was preceded in death by his father and two brothers.
Funeral services were held Monday, February 18 at 2 p.m. at Maxton Funeral Chapel with Rev. Fr. David Braun officiating. Interment was in Old DuQuoin cemetery.
Military graveside rites were conducted by VFW Post 513.

Golda L. McLemore
Golda L. McLemore, 93, of DuQuoin, passed away at 10:48 a.m. Monday, January 21, 2002 at Herrin Hospital in Herrin, Ill.
Mrs. McLemore was a retired cook at Freeman United Club House. She was a member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church. She was a resident of DuQuoin for over 90 years.
She was born July 7, 1908 at Amite, Louisiana, the daughter of Henry and Mammie (Harrell) Crawford. She married
Robert Kelly Sr. on July 5, 1933 at DuQuoin and he preceded her in death on October 15, 1968. She then married
Thomas McLemore on August 23, 1970 at DuQuoin and he preceded her in death on November 27, 1971.
Surviving are two daughters, Mary Lynn Taylor of Evanston and Mammie Kelly of Energy; three sons, Robert Kelly Jr. of Ankarage, Alaska, Douglas Kelly of Manchester, Mo. and Rev. Leon Kelly of DuQuoin; one sister, Cecelia Crawford of Chicago; 19 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; one brother; one daughter and one grandchild.
Funeral services were Monday, January 28 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Baptist Church with Rev. Leon Kelly officiating. Interment was in the IOOF cemetery at DuQuoin.

Anna M. Gant
Anna M. Gant, 83, of DuQuoin, passed away at 1:17 a.m. Wednesday, January 30, 2002 at Marshall Browning Hospital in DuQuoin.
Mrs. Gant was a homemaker and a member of Sunfield Baptist Church.
She was born February 12, 1918 at Tamaroa, the daughter of Emil and Mary (Shermer) Krmitzski. She married
Curtis Wm. Gant on March 31, 1937 in Perry County and he preceded her in death on July 17, 1986.
Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Iva Gant of DuQuoin and Ray and Myra Gant of DuQuoin; one brother, Adrian Krmitzski of Tamaroa; one sister, Emma Johnson of Chicago; nine grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and three brothers.
Funeral services were held Saturday, February 2 at 11 a.m. at Neal-McClure Memorial Chapel in DuQuoin. Interment was in Old DuQuoin cemetery.
Friends called at Neal-McClure Funeral Home on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 7:30 a.m. until time of service.
Michael Sean Gerla
Michael Sean Gerla, 52, of DuQuoin, passed away at 3:16 a.m. Wednesday, January 2, 2002 at his residence.
Michael was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War.
He was born November 29, 1949 at Carlsbad, N.M.
He married
Mary Ann Leathers on August 6, 1993 at Kinmundy, Ill. and she survives.
He is survived by his wife of DuQuoin; two sons, Thomas Leathers of Oklahoma and Jason Leathers of Kansas; mother-in-law, Ruth Sills of DuQuoin; sister-in-law, Donna Stice; brother- and sister-in-law, Gene and Donna Sills; three nieces, Nyla McMurray, Hope Sills and Amanda Sills; nephew, Robert Shearer and great-nieces, Peyton McMurray and Gracie McMurray.
He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers.
At the request of Michael, there were no visitation or funeral. Cremation services were held.
The Searby Funeral Home of DuQuoin was in charge of arrangements.

Julio Obertini
Julio Obertini, 86, of DuQuoin, passed away Thursday, January 3, 2002 at 6:04 a.m. at Franklin Hospital in Benton.
Mr. Obertini had been a welder with the coal mines. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the American Legion and VFW in DuQuoin.
He was born August 7, 1915 at Herrin, the son of Bert and Anna (Wertz) Obertini. He married
Betty Jean Brann in San Francisco, California in 1945 and she preceded him in death in 1987.
Surviving are three children, Patricia Obertini of DuQuoin, James Obertini of California and Debra Jean Obertini of California; one brother, Charles Obertini of DuQuoin and one sister, Julia Janini of Pinckneyville.
Her was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one daughter, one brother and one sister.
Funeral services were Saturday, January 5 at 2 p.m. at Neal-McClure Memorial Chapel with Rev. Bob Dickerson officiating. Interment was in Sunset Memorial Park at DuQuoin.
Friends alled at Neal-McClure Funeral Home on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 7:30 a.m. until time of service.
Helen A. Queen
Helen A. Queen, 88, of Kenosha, Wisconsin, formerly of Tamaroa, passed away at 2:10 a.m. Wednesday, January 9, 2002 at the Kenosha Memorial Hospital in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
Helen was a homemaker and attended the First United Methodist Church in DuQuoin.
She was born April 24, 1913 at Tamaroa, the daughter of Everett and Emma (Krone) Thompson. She married
John M. Queen on January 17, 1946 at St. Louis, Mo. and he preceded her in death on March 19, 1986.
She is survived by a daughter, Marjorie Thompson of Kenosha, Wis.; grandchildren, Alan Thompson of Racine, Wis., David Thompson of Kenosha, Wis. Deborah Edmark of Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, Penney Thompson of Kenosha, Wis; two sisters, Elmira Lagatutta of Chicago and Lucille Tunica of St. Louis, Mo; brother, Kenneth Thompson of Tamaroa and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 12 at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin with Rev. Carl Mesiti officiating.
Friends called from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin.
Interment was in Sunset Memorial Park at DuQuoin.
Jewel L. Showalter
Jewel L. Showalter, 90, Mt. Carmel, died February 19, 2002 at the United Methodist Village in Lawrenceville, Ill.
She was born April 2, 1911 in Wabash County, the daughter of William and Ilah (Beard) Spond.
Mrs. Showalter was a member of the Evangelical United Methodist Church in Mt. Carmel and the Hospital Auxiliary. She was a homemaker.
She married
Verne Schafer Showalter September 21, 1928. He preceded her in death September 18, 1996.
Surviving are two sons, Gene R. Showalter of DuQuoin and Jerry M. Showalter of Tampa, Fla.; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; sister, Betty Sprague of Robinson, Ill.
Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, son Donald and grandson, Gary Showalter; three brothers, Sereno, Cleo and Haley Spond.
Services were at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 23 in the chapel of Short Funeral Home in Mt. Carmel, with Burial in Highland Memorial cemetery.
Friends called Saturday from 9 a.m. until the hour of services at the funeral home.

Isophine Carnett
Isophine Carnett, 91, of Harrisburg, passed away at 7:45 a.m. Sunday, February 17, 2002 at Ferrell Hospital.
Mrs. Carnett was a homemaker and a member of Sulphur Springs Missionary Baptist Church. She was one of the first members of the Harrisburg Golden Circle.
She was born February 25, 1910 at Equality, Ill., the daughter of D.M. and Ollie Ann (Patton) Woods. She married
James E. Carnett Sr. and he preceded her in death on April 12, 1956.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Philip (Ollie) Brown of Raleigh; son, James E. and Elfriede Carnett of DuQuoin; brother, Harry Woods of Godfrey; grandchildren, Tim Brown of Stonefort, Janice Cantrell of Equality, Sylvia Carnett of DuQuoin, Cyndie Cook of Eldorado and Patricia Wright of DuQuoin and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; stepdaughter, Thelma Prather; sisters, Edna Ruth Bullard, Anna Belle Crest and Eva Gulley and four brothers, Everett Woods, Logan Woods, Ralph Woods and Roscoe Woods.
Funeral services were Wednesday, February 20 at 1 p.m. at J.M. Weirauch Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bill Jones officiating. Interment was in Jones cemetery in Equality.

Wm. Jake Martie
Wm. Jake Martie, 76, of Elkville, passed away at 12:33 P.M., Friday, February 1, 2002 at the Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.
Jake was a retired haul truck driver at the Captain Coal Mine. He had worked for 26 years at the Du Quoin Packing Co. He was an avid gardener. Jake was a member of the Elkville Baptist Church. He was a US Army veteran of W.W.II.
He was born January 24, 1926 at Elkville the son of William A. and Minnie (Holliday) Martie.
He married
Janet M. Wilks on April 2, 1955 at Murphysboro and she survives.
He is survived by his wife of Elkville, daughter- Janice Hindman and husband John of Elkville, son- Don Martie and wife Melody of Pinckneyville, sister- Lula M. Pinkerton of Elkville, grandchildren- Andrea Bruzan and husband Andrew, Shaun Cashion and wife Dawn, Anson Cashion, Nicole Hindman, Mike Hindman, Scott Martie, Matt Martie, great grandchildren- Sadie Cashion, Kadie Cashion, Ashton Bruzan, Morgan Cashion.
He was preceded in death by his parents, great granddaughter- Alexis Ellsworth.
Funeral services were at 11:00 A.M., Monday, January 4, 2002 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Rev. Daryl Williams officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 8 P.M. Sunday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.
Interment was in the Hallidayboro cemetery.

Charity L. Carson
Charity L. 'Jackie' Carson, age 80, of Pinckneyville, died on Tuesday, February 19, 2002 at 6:45 a.m. at her home.
Jackie was born in DuQuoin on November 7, 1921, the daughter of Dwight W. and Maida T. (Feltmeyer) Fisher. She married
James Stotz and he died in World War II. She then married
Howard L. Carson on February 23, 1946 in Pinckneyville and he preceded her in death on March 20, 1998. She was a homemaker and a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, Pinckneyville.
Survivors include a daughter: Toni Engelhardt and her husband, Richard, two sons: John Edward Carson and his wife, Rosie, and Gary, all of Pinckneyville, a brother: Kenneth Fisher of Lexington, Ky., two sisters: Nadine Dehne and her husband, Floyd, of Pinckneyville, and Alma Brand of Vergennes, sister-in-law: Lois Fisher of Pinckneyville, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, a brother: Paul Fisher and a grandson: Benjamin Carson.
Funeral services were held on Friday, February 22 at 11 a.m. in the Oak Grove Baptist Church with Bro. Rob Mathis officiating. Interment was in the Oak Grove cemetery.

Marilyn L. Dunaway
Marilyn L. Dunaway, 46, of Elkville, passed away Monday, February 18, 2002 at Marshall Browning Hospital in DuQuoin.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, February 21 at Meredith Funeral Home, Carbondale with Brother William Graver officiating. Interment was held at Oakwood cemetery, Carterville. Friends called after 5 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Marilyn was born March 30, 1955 in Carbondale to Marion Smith and Patricia L. (Ridgeway) Smith. She married
Jack R. Dunaway December 27, 1978 in Harrisburg.
Survivors include her husband, Jack R. Dunaway of Elkville; one son and daughter-in-law, Chad and Kara Smith of Royalton; one grandson, Dakota Smith; one granddaughter, Mackenzie Smith; her parents, John E. and Patricia L. Rogers of Carterville; one brother, Michael E. Rogers of Harrisburg and one grandmother, Leona I. Rogers of Homestead, Fla.
Her biological father, Marion Smith, and one sister, Pamela Smith, preceded her in death.
Marilyn was a member of First Apostolic Church, Pinckneyville. Mrs. Dunaway worked as a truck driver for Henderson Trucking in Salem. She had been employed by Shelter Insurance as a secretary and had worked as a data processor for several places. Marilyn took great joy in being a homemaker.
Marilyn had recently been a patient at the DuQuoin Dialysis Center. She loved all those whom she touched.
