Wavia Price
Wavia Price, 94, of Mulkeytown, passed away at 5:00 a.m. Friday, April 12, 2002 at Fair Acres Nursing Home in DuQuoin.

Mrs. Price was a homemaker and a member of Full Gospel Mission Church in Buckner. She was born November 23, 1907 in Plumfield to Charles and Mary (Sanders) Culley. She married Lee Price on September 15, 1923 in Pinckneyville and he preceded her in death on May 21, 1991.

Surviving are her children, Carl Price of Mulkeytown, Fay King of Zeigler and Chloe Cook of Dowell; siblings, Freda Furlow of Christopher, Reba Hutson of Sesser and Kenneth Culley of Mulkeytown; 15 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sons, Neal and Leon Price; one daughter, Irene Price; three sisters and one brother.

Funeral services were Monday, April 15 at 11 a.m. at Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher with Bro. C.L. McKinnies and Sister Bernadine Caldwell Webb officiating. Interment was in Mulkeytown cemetery.

Friends called at Gilbert Funeral Home on Sunday after 5 p.m.

Sylvester R. Ratajczyk
Sylvester R. Ratajczyk, 83, of Scheller, passed away at 9:30 p.m. on Monday, April 15, 2002 at St. Francis Hospital in Cape Girardeau, Mo.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 18, 2002 at St. Barbara Catholic Church in Scheller with Fr. Daniel Jurek officiating.

Friends called from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Searby Funeral Home in Tamaroa. The Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Interment was in St. Barbara cemetery.

Memorials may be made to St. Barbara Church or to Masses.

Alfred L. Polczynski
Mr. Alfred L. Polczynski rural Nashville, departed this life at the Washington County Hospital of Nashville on Saturday, April 13, 2002 at 12:40 a.m. after a sudden illness. He had attained the age of 77 years, 5 months, and 26 days.

Mr. Polczynski was born at Du Bois on October 17, 1924 the son of Jacob and Mary (Picnic) Polczynski. He was united in marriage to Marie E. Klumpe at Dunnington, Indiana on August 25, 1951 and she preceded him in death on January 5, 1993.

Alfred was a veteran of WW II serving in the United States Army. He was a retired farmer and was a member of St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church at Todds Mill. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus Council #4384 of Nashville and enjoyed fishing and dancing.

Left to mourn his passing are three daughters, Jean Stanton and husband Mark and Wanda Rodely and husband Eugene, all of Du Quoin, and Eileen Spenner and husband Alan of Hoyleton; a son, Larry Polczynski and wife Lori of Nashville; 12 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Marie Polczynski, an infant son, Phillip, five brothers, Ed, Alex, Dominic, Joseph, and Leonard Polczynski and a sister, Rosie Gross.

Mass of the Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church at Todds Mill on Tuesday, April 16 at 10 a.m. with Fr. James VanOss officiating with interment in the church cemetery.

Friends called at the Campagna Funeral Home of Nashville on Monday from 5 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 7:30 to 9 a.m.

A Vigil Prayer service was held Monday at 8 p.m. at the Campagna Funeral Home.

Should friends desire, Mass offerings or memorial contributions to the Veteran Medical Center at Marion may be made.

Lillian S. Tanner
Lillian S. Tanner, 87, of Du Quoin, passed away at 1:05 A.M., Tuesday, April 30, 2002 at the Magnolia Manor in Metropolis, IL

Lillian was a retired seamstress at the Pinckneyville Garment Company. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Du Quoin and had worked with the Baptist Church Nursery. She was a member of the Silver Threads Club and the ILGWU.

She was born July 7, 1914 at St. Louis, MO the daughter of Charles J. and Wilmina (Echterhoff) Volpert.

She married August H. Tanner he preceded her in death in 1985.

She is survived by two daughters- Alma Jean McKeller and husband Donald of Joliet, IL, Patricia Huite and husband Harry of Metropolis, IL, daughter-in-law- Doris Tanner of Streator, IL, brother- Everett Volpert and wife Mary of Kansas, ten grandchildren and twenty two great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son- James Tanner, four brothers and four sisters.

Funeral services were at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, May 4, 2002 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Rev. Shaw DeMent and Rev. Bob Dickerson officiating.

Friends called from 9 to 11 A.M., Saturday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.

Interment was in the Mueller Hill cemetery at Pinckneyville.

Friends may make memorials to the First Baptist Church Nursery.

LaDonna F. Underwood
LaDonna F. Underwood, 69, of Elkville, passed away at 10:20 P.M., Wednesday, April 3, 2002 at the Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

LaDonna was a homemaker and had been a cook at the Elverado Grade School for many years. She was a member of the Elkville Christian Church.

She was born March 25, 1933 at Cambria, IL the daughter of Charles William and Iva May (Kelley) Dunning.

She married William "Bill" Underwood on May 13, 1948 at Elkville and he survives.

She is survived by her husband of Elkville, three children- Carol Ritter and husband Ron of Du Quoin, Kathy Kirk of Carterville, Bill Underwood and wife Pat of Ashland, KY, six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother- Carl Wayne Dunning.

Funeral services were at 11:30 A.M. Saturday, April 6, 2002 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with her son Bill Underwood and Gary Pruitt officiating.

Friends called from 10:00 A.M. until 11:30 A.M., Saturday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.

Interment was in the Elkville cemetery.

Friends may make memorials to the Memorial Hospital of Carbondale ICU Unit.

Edna Rose
Edna Rose, 90, of Du Quoin, passed away at 12:48 A.M., Saturday, April 27, 2002 at the Marshall Browning Hospital in Du Quoin.

Edna was a homemaker and had been a cook at Perry Manor Nursing Home in Pinckneyville. Edna was of the Baptist Faith.

She was born January 27, 1912 at Buncombe, IL the daughter of George and Ella (Anderson) Gurley.

She married Roy Rose and he preceded her in death.

She is survived by a son- Franklin D. Rose of Du Quoin, IL, sister- Nina Saiz of Du Quoin, IL, four grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Graveside funeral services were at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, May 2, 2002 at the Sunset Memorial Park in Du Quoin with Rev. Ted Clark officiating.

The Searby Fuenral Home of Du Quoin was in charge of arrangements.

Those attending the services were asked to go directly to the cemetery.

Interment was in the Sunset Memorial Park at Du Quoin.

Robert Don Thorpe
Robert Don Thorpe, 70, of Du Quoin, passed away at 7:45 P.M., Tuesday, April 23, 2002 at the Marshall Browning Hospital in Du Quoin.

Robert had worked at Bergs Laundry and Ace Janitorial. He was a Baptist. He was a member of the Du Quoin VFW Post 513. Robert was a US Army Veteran of W. W. II.

He was born November 8, 1931 at Du Quoin, IL the son of Robert Lorraine and Ruth Mary (Toler) Thorpe.

He married Gladys Irene Swallers on January 21, 1951 at Peragu, Ark., she passed away June 4, 1991.

He is survived by three daughters- Veronica Wright of Kingston, TN, Bonnie Allsup of Springfield, IL, Mona Thorpe of Springfield, IL, four sons- John Thorpe of Riverton, IL, Charles Thorpe and Tommy Thorpe both of Du Quoin, IL, Carl Thorpe of Spaulding, IL, three sisters- Pearl Danbury and Barbara Harsy both of Du Quoin, IL, Mary Dodson of Wagoner, OK, three brothers- Charles Thorpe and Darrell Thorpe both of Du Quoin, IL, Marshall Thorpe of Chatham, IL, eighteen grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.

Funeral services were at 11:00 A.M., Friday, April 26, 2002 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Bro. George Alvis officiating.

Friends called from 9 to 11 A.M., Friday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.

Cremation service followed the funeral.

Kenneth Allen Samples
Kenneth Allen Samples, 40, of St. Louis, Mo., passed away late Saturday, April 20 or early Sunday, April 21, 2002 in East St. Louis, Mo.

He was born May 28, 1961 in DuQuoin, the son of Opal Roberts Samples. Mr. Samples had lived in St. Louis, Mo. for approximately 10 years. He worked as a doorman and bouncer in a nightclub.

Surviving are three brothers, Richard Miller, Mike Samples and Joe Samples and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents, Joe and Dorothy Roberts.

Funeral services and visitation were held Thursday, April 25 from 1:30 to 5:00 p.m. at J.B. Smith Funeral Home in St. Louis, Mo.

Cremation followed services.

Imogene Starkweather
Imogene Starkweather, 94, of rural Robinson, Ill., died at 7:40 a.m. Wednesday, April 3, 2002 at Cotillion Ridge Nursing Center in Robinson. She was born August 2, 1917 in Sesser, Ill., the daughter of Herman Daily and Mabel Neal Daily. She was a homemaker, a member of the Highland Avenue Baptist Church and a graduate of the North Park College with a degree in music.

She married Paul Starkweather on December 22, 1939 and he preceded her in death on April 17, 2000. she was also preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Cyril Daily.

She is survived by two daughters and her sons-in-law, Judith and Joe Titsworth of rural Robinson and Dianna and Carl Burford of Olympia, Wash; two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Brenda Braden of San Jose, Calif. and Stephen and Kathryn Starkweather of Highland, Ill.; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; her sister and brother-in-law, Flora Ann and Robert Jennings of Morton, Ill. and her brother, Herman Don Daily of Redding, Calif.

Visitation was from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Robinson. Funeral services were at 7 p.m. with Rev. Jerry McDaniel in charge of services. A graveside service was held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 6 at the Sunset Memorial Park cemetery in DuQuoin. Memorials may be made to the Highland Avenue Baptist Church.

Donald E. Malone
Donald E. Malone, 79, of Harrisburg, formerly of DuQuoin, passed away at 7:15 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, 2002 at his home.

Mr. Malone was a coal miner and a member of First Baptist Church in DuQuoin. He was a U.S. Army and Navy veteran of WW II.

He was born February 4, 1923 in DuQuoin, the son of Ransom and Mary (Henderson) Malone. He married Beulah Davis on December 10, 1949 at Marion and she preceded him in death in 1977.

Surviving are four sons, Gene Davis and wife Twila of DuQuoin, Donald Davis of Harrisburg, Jerry Malone and wife Terry of Harrisburg and Billy Malone and wife Joyce of Harrisburg; three daughters, Mary Motsinger and husband Rick of Benton, Frances Lagrand of Harrisburg and Debbie Barger of Harrisburg; one brother, Tom Malone of Santa Barbara, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one son, one brother and one sister.

Funeral services were Tuesday, April 23 at 1 p.m. at Neal-McClure Memorial Chapel in DuQuoin with Rev. Marty Shadowen officiating. Interment was in the IOOF cemetery in DuQuoin.

Friends called at Neal-McClure Funeral Home on Monday, April 22 from 5 to 8 p.m. and on Tuesday from 7:30 a.m. until time of service.

Graveside military rites were conducted by the DuQuoin VFW and American Legion.

James Arthur Martie
James Arthur Martie, 89, of Dowell, passed away at 10:30 P.M., Sunday, April 14, 2002 at his home.

Arthur was a retired coal miner working for 43 years at Consolidated Coal Co. He attended the Dowell Baptist Church, He was a member and had served as master on three separate occasions of Masonic Lodge #234 of Du Quoin. He was a member and had been High Priest of Royal Arch Masons Du Quoin Chapter # 44. He was a member of the UMWofA. Arthur was a former Elkville Highschool board member and a former Village of Dowell Trustee.

He was born September 7, 1912 at Hallidayboro, IL the son of John Jacob and Edith (Kelley) Martie.

He married Lulu Hargett on December 19, 1936 at Elkville, IL she passed away in April 1980.

He is survived by two sons- Chuck Martie and wife Judy of Dowell, Edward Martie and wife Toni of Du Quoin, daughter- Shirley Martie of Dowell, sister-in-law- Nettie Martie of Hallidayboro, brother-in-law- Church Hargett and wife Mary of Du Quoin, eight grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers, one sister, one great grandchild.

Funeral services were at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, April 17, 2002 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Rev. Gary Pate officiating.

Friends called from 5 to 8 P.M. Tuesday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.

Interment was in the Sunset Memorial Park at Du Quoin.

Masonic services were at 7:00 P.M., Tuesday at the funeral home.

Friends may make memorials to the Dowell Baptist Church or the Du Quoin Masonic Lodge #234 and will be accepted at the funeral home.
