Virginia L. Marmaduke
Virginia L. Marmaduke, of Pinckneyville, passed away at the Pinckneyville Community Hospital on Thursday, November 8, 2001 at the age of 93.
Virginia was born in Carbondale on June 21, 1908, the daughter of Harvey and Blanche (Crain) Marmaduke.
She moved to Chicago in early childhood and attended the University of Iowa School of Journalism. She started her journalism career in Herrin, then in 1943 became the first woman reporter at the Chicago Sun. She later moved to the Chicago Tribune. In the 1950's she had her own Radio and TV show 'Date with the Duchess'. She had resided in Chicago for over 40 years and after retirement in 1965 moved to Pinckneyville.
She was a member of Galum Presbyterian and First Presbyterian Church in Pinckneyville.
Her honors, to name a few, were first woman on the Chicago Board of Health in 1957; Host at the New York Worlds Fair Illinois Pavilion in 1964; Chicago Press Veteran of the Year (first woman) in 1979; Chicago Journalism Hall of Fame in 1992; Tribune Feature in Tempo January 28, 1992; Lincoln Academy of Illinois Laureate in 1984. For many years she was a host on WSIU TV Annual Fund Program with Irv Coppi. She was a Southern Illinois University ambassador and a most avid supporter.
Graveside services were held a the Oaklawn cemetery in Carbondale on Tuesday at 12 p.m. with Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Charge.
Lessie Ahlers
Lessie Ahlers, 87, of DuQuoin, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, December 11, 2001 at 11:30 p.m. at the Alton Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Perry county on April 14, 1914. She was the daughter of Carl and Pearl (Lipe) Milligan. She married
Milton Ahlers in Chester on September 24, 1931. He preceded her in death on August 31, 1973.
She had been a resident of DuQuoin for 57 years. She was a faithful member of the Old DuQuoin Baptist Church. Her church family was very special to her.
Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Deloris and Dale Williams of Witchita, Kan. and Alice and Rev. David Morgan of Sesser; two sons and daughters-in-law, Rev. Allen and Imy Ahlers of Rosewood Heights and Bill and Carolyn Ahlers of Moro; one sister, Loretta Clark of DuQuoin; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son and one brother.
Visitation was at the Neal-McClure Funeral Home on Friday, December 14 from 5 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, December 15 from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Funeral services were held at the Old DuQuoin Baptist church on Saturday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Ted Clark and Rev. allen Ahlers officiating. Burial was in the Old DuQuoin cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Old DuQuoin Baptist Church.
Louetta Marie McClure
Louetta Marie (McQuaid) McClure, 81, of DuQuoin, formerly of Effingham, passed away at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, November 8, 2001 at the Fair Acres Nursing Home in DuQuoin.
Louetta was a dealer of antiques. She was a charter member of the Old DuQuoin Baptist Church.
She was born March 11, 1920 at Coulterville, the daughter of Ralph E. and Bertha (Cook) McQuaid.
She is survived by two sons- Loren Felts of California and George Felts of Missouri; step-children- Marvin McClure of Texas, Wanda Marble of Ohio, Shirley Gillenwater of Ohio and Vivian Brewer of Indiana; a sister- Dorothy McQuaid of DuQuoin.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother- Ralph D. McQuaid on December 25, 1988.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Monday, November 12 at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin with Rev. Gerald Wright officiating.
Friends called from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin.
Interment wasin Sunset Memorial Park at DuQuoin.
Friends may make memorials to the Fair Acres Nursing Home in DuQuoin and will be accepted at the funeral home.
Claribel Gilbert
Claribel Gilbert, 77, of Middleburg, Fla., formerly of DuQuoin, passed away at 4:45 a.m. Tuesday, December 11, 2001 at her residence.
Claribel was a retired claim benefits specialist for Blue Cross/Blue Shield. She was a member of First Christian Church of DuQuoin.
She was born March 24, 1924 at DuQuoin, the daughter of Leslie and Flossie (Adams) Brown. She married
Harold E. Gilbert and he preceded her in death on October 28, 1985.
She is survived by a son, Ron Wood of Middleburg, Fla.; stepson, Ken Gilbert of Ocala, Fla.; granddaughters, Roni Wood of Middleburg, Fla., Heidi Gilbert of Lewiston, Maine, grandsons, Ryan Wood of Middleburg, Fla., Tyler Wood of Middleburg, Fla. and Sean Gilbert of Lewiston, Maine and a brother, Leland Brown of Benton.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sisters, Ruth Thorpe and Helen Cato and a brother, Bob Brown.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 15 at Sunset Memorial Park in DuQuoin with Rev. John Lewis officiating.
The Searby Funeral Home of DuQuoin was in charge of arrangements.
Those attending the services were asked to go directly to the cemetery.
Interment was in Sunset Memorial Park.
Randall Prusacki
Randall Prusacki, 53, of Du Quoin, passed away at 2:20 a.m. Tuesday, December 11, 2001 at his home.
Randall was a postal clerk for the U.S. Postal Service.
He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Du Quoin. He was a member and past commander of Du Quoin VFW Post 513 and a member of American Legion Roy Mitchell Post of Du Quoin, Du Quoin Eagles Lodge and the APWU. He was a US Army veteran of the Vietnam War and was awarded the Purple Heart for combat injuries.
He was born January 10, 1948 at Centralia, Ill. the son of Ralph and Dorothy (Liszewski) Prusacki.
He married
Cyrilla S. Miller on June 22, 1979 at the Sacred Heart Church in Du Quoin and she survives.
He is survived by his wife of Du Quoin, two daughters Renee Annette Prusacki and Dana Lynn Prusacki, both of Du Quoin; son Marc Thomas Prusacki of Du Quoin, two brothers Joseph Prusacki and wife Carla of Sterling, VA, Karl Prusacki of Du Quoin; two sisters, Joan Guciardo and husband Jack of Belleville, and Mary Lynn Szperra and husband Jim of Du Bois; two nieces--Elizabeth Szperra and Rachael Harsy; nephew Josh Harsy; mother and father-in-law Cyril and Irene Miller of Pinckneyville; two sisters-in-law Rita Harsy and husband Jerry of Du Quoin and Allicia Miller of Pinckneyville; godchildren Laura Ryterski and Kendra Carter, aunts, uncles & cousins.
Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Friday, December 14, 2001 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Du Quoin with Msgr. Harry Jerome officiating. Friends called from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin. The Rosary was prayed at 9:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Interment was in the Sacred Heart cemetery in Du Quoin.
Friends may make memorials to a scholarship fund for the Randall Prusacki children at the Fifth/Third Bank in Du Quoin or they will be accepted at the funeral home, or to Masses.
The Du Quoin VFW Post 513 honored him with graveside military rites.
Dorothea K. Flanary
Dorothea K. Flanary, 72, of Pinckneyville, passed away at 11:59 p.m. Thursday, December 20, 2001 at her home.
Mrs. Flanary was retired from MUMS in Pinckneyville.
She was born Saturday, September 14, 1929 in Pinckneyville, the daughter of William and Mary Fay (McNew) Koontz.
Surviving are two sons, Randol J. and Mickey Sumner of Pinckneyville and Brian Flanary of Pinckneyville; one daughter, Kathleen A. and Bill Lewis of Sesser; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, William Koontz of Collinsville.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, two sisters and her husband.
Due to Mrs. Flanary's wishes, her body was donated to science. There will not be any service. Burial was at SIU School of Medicine in Carbondale.
Memorial contributions may be made to Perry County Hospice.
Ruth Magdeline Witbracht
Ruth Magdeline Witbracht, 85, of Percy, passed away at 2:50 p.m. Thursday, December 13, 2001 at Fair Acres Nursing Home in DuQuoin.
Mrs. Witbracht was a homemaker and a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Percy. She was a member of the Joy Club of the church and United Methodist Women's Organization.
She was born Thursday, December 30, 1915 at Hallidayboro, the daughter of Nesby Willmore and Lavinia Crosson Willmore. She married
Donald R. Witbracht on March 23, 1946 at Steeleville and he preceded her in death on December 10, 1989.
Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Edward and Marsha Witbracht of Percy and Max and Brenda Witbracht of DuQuoin; four grandchildren and spouses, Michael and Cindy Witbracht of Pinckneyville, Rachel and Jeremy Schwartzkopf of Percy, Matt and Carrie Witbracht of Percy and Amber Witbracht of Percy; five great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Chase Witbracht of Pinckneyville and Macie, Seth and Christian Witbracht of Percy; one sister, Irene Weber of Monroe, Louisiana.
She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers and one sister.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, December 16 at Wilson's Funeral Home in Steeleville with Rev. Bruce Baker officiating. Interment was in Percy Village cemetery.
Friends called Sunday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the funeral home.
Howard Walters
Howard 'Tumble' Walters, age 88, of DuQuoin, passed away Wednesday, December 19, 2001 at 2:10 p.m. at St. Mary's Hospital in St. Louis, Mo.
Mr. Walters had been a coal miner and a mine construction worker. He was a member of the UMWA and the manager of Elkville Khorey League Midgets for several years.
He was born May 8, 1913 at Vergennes Township in Jackson County, the son of Hiram and Kate (Nausley) Walters. He married
Naomi Wright on March 15, 1941 at Cape Girardeau, Mo. and she preceded him in death in April 1958. He then married
Eleanor Ward on February 29, 1964 at Havana, Ill. and she preceded him in death on August 17, 1984.
Surviving are son, Frank 'Tom' and wife Yvonne 'Bunny' Walters of Percy; daughter, Kathleen Walters of Pinckneyville; sister, Cleta Wolfe of Mt. Vernon; grandchildren, Frankie Stowers of DuQuoin and Sandy Wagner of Guam; great-grandchildren, Matthew Stowers, Jessica, Ashley, Brandy and Shana Wagner; step-sons, Dick and wife Ida Ward of Canton, Ronnie and wife Joyce Ward of Hardy, Ark. and Wendell 'Mutt' and wife Sherry Ward of Springfield; 12 step-grandchildren; 14 step-great-grandchildren; a special friend, Helen Johnson of DuQuoin and special neighbors, Tom and Eloise Threewitt.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two wives; two brothers; sister, Molly Benson; grandson, Rick Walters; one step-daughter; one step-grandson and one step-great-granddaughter.
Funeral services were Saturday, December 22 at 11 a.m. at Parrish cemetery in Vergennes with Rev. Terry Jackson officiating.
Interment was in Parrish cemetery.
Friends called at Neal-McClure Funeral Home in DuQuoin on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m.
Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association.
Joseph P. Aleo
Joseph P. Aleo, 88, of Du Quoin, passed away at 2:05 P.M., Wednesday, May 22, 2002 at the Casey Care Center in Mt. Vernon, IL.
Joseph was a retired Du Quoin businessman. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Du Quoin. He was a Lifetime member of the American Legion and a Lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus.
He was a Past Commodore of Port Charlotte, Florida Yacht Club. He was a US Navy Veteran.
Joseph was born February 2, 1914 at Velarosa, Italy the son of Phillip and Josephine (Guieli) Aleo.
He married
Katie E. Riggio on April 27, 1935 at Du Quoin, IL she passed away December 20, 1973, He then married
Kay Aldridge on February 14, 1976 at Taylorville, IL and she survives.
He is survived by his wife of Taylorville, daughter- Antoinette Haner and husband Lyle of Du Quoin, three grandchildren- Cindy Pierce of Elkville, Alan Pierce and wife Debbie of Du Quoin, Kimbra Schafer and husband Kenton of Vergennes, four great grandchildren- Carol Jo Bedar, Sean Bedar, Anthony Pierce, Elizabeth Schafer,
two stepsons- David Aldridge and wife Diane of Taylorville, Terry Aldridge and wife Romania of Orlando, FL, many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Katie, daughter- Josephine Pierce, two great grandsons- Mark Anthony and Martin Andrew Bedar, brother- Tony Aleo, two sisters- Jenney Megna and Lena Lima.
Funeral services were at 1:30 P.M., Saturday, May 25, 2002 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Msgr. Harry Jerome officiating.
Friends called from 11:00 A.M. until 1:15 P.M. Saturday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin, the Rosary was said at 1:15 P.M. Friday at the funeral home.
Interment was in the Sacred Heart cemetery at Du Quoin.

Military graveside rites were conducted by the Du Quoin American Legion Post.
Dorothy A. Beck
Dorothy A. Beck, 81, of St. Louis, MO a former Tamaroa resident, passed away Monday, May 20, 2002 at her residence.
Dorothy was a retired salesperson at Sears for twenty years. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Tamaroa.
She was born May 21, 1920 at Tamaroa, IL the daughter of Louis and Josephine A. (Naliborski) Matlevish.
She married
Walter P. Beck in 1948 he passed away September 8, 1978.
She is survived by a son-Terry B. Sherman and wife Kathleen of Chesterfield, MO, two grandchildren- Scott B. Sherman and wife Krista and Laura K. Sherman.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
A Memorial Mass was at 11:00 A.M., Friday, May 24, 2002 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Tamaroa with Msgr. Melvin Vandeloo offficiating.
Interment was in the Immaculate Conception cemetery at Tamaroa.
The Searby Funeral Home of Tamaroa was in charge of arrangements.
Florence E. Center
Mrs. Florence E. Center, age 95, died Friday, May 24 at Quail Haven Village in Pinehurst, North Carolina. Mrs. Center was born in Marion, Ill. to the late Eugene and Edna (Dugger) McElvain. She grew up and attended school in Marion.
A private memorial service was held by the family at a later date.
Mrs. Center is survived by her daughter, N. Joel C. Rich of Pinehurst, N.C.; one sister, Elizabeth Jarz of Chicago; two grandchildren, Laurie Joel Rich of Pinehurst, N.C. and Gerald Adams Rich of Wilmington, N.C. and one great-grandchild, Leslie Jordan Rich of Wilmington, N.C.
