Leo Butcher
Leo Butcher, 75, of North Kansas City, Missouri, formerly of DuQuoin, died May 23, 2002 at North Kansas City Hospital.
He was born on July 29, 1926 in Murphysboro, the son of Linden and Ella (Herring) Butcher. He was a graduate of Murphysboro High School. Mr. Butcher served his country during World War II by enlisting in the Navy on July 21, 1944 and serving until April 30, 1947. On April 16, 1948, Leo married
Mary D. Roberts in Murphysboro.
Mr. Butcher was employed by GTE as a Service Technician for over 40 years, retiring in 1989 in DuQuoin. He then moved to North Kansas City to be near his daughter. Leo was a member of the North Cross United Methodist Church in Kansas City.
Mr. Butcher is survived by his wife, Mary, of the home; a daughter and her husband, Linda D. and Marlin R. Roberts of Kansas City, Mo.; a brother, Earl Butcher of Aberdeen, Maryland; two sisters, Minnie Dickerson of Murphysboro and Ruby Wright of South Haven, Mississippi and two grandsons, Matthew R. and Zachary B. Roberts.
In addition to his parents, Leo was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.
Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 31 at North Cross United Methodist Church. In accordance with Mr. Butcher's wishes, he was cremated.
Memorial donations may be made to the North Cross United Methodist Church or the North Star United Methodist Church Land Fund.

Sandra Faye Coleman
Sandra Faye Coleman, age 59, of Pinckneyville, died suddenly at her home on Saturday, May 11, 2002 at 11:45 a.m.
Sandy was born in DuQuoin on August 18, 1942, the daughter of Loren and Ellen (Ebans) Polley. She married
Robert E. Coleman on January 18, 1987 in Pinckneyville and he preceded her in death on August 16, 1999. Sandy worked as a telecommunicator for Perry County Sheriff Dept. for many years.
Survivors include her son, Mark Jones, his wife Lisa, and daughter Stephanie Nicole, all of Carbondale; two sisters, Frances Welch of Springfield and Mary Anne Harriss of Pinckneyville; three brothers, Loren Polley of Silt, Colorado, Dan Polley of Vero Beach, Florida and Rick Polley of Christopher and numerous other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and an infant daughter.
Funeral services were held at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville on Tuesday, May 14 at 10 a.m. with Dr. Robert Smith officiating. Interment was in the Old DuQuoin cemetery.
Visitation was held at the funeral home on Monday, May 13 from 6 until 9 p.m. and on Tuesday from 8 a.m. until time of services.
Memorials may be made to the Old DuQuoin cemetery Association.
Samuel Ray Dickerson
Samuel Ray Dickerson, 54, of Dowell, passed away at 6:22 A.M., Wednesday, May 29, 2002 at the VA Medical Center in Marion, IL
Samuel was a mine examiner. He was a Lutheran and a member of the Carbondale American Legion and the Du Quoin Masonic Lodge. He was a US Army veteran of the Viet Nam war.
He was born August 8, 1947 at Carbondale, IL the son of Robert and Ella (Verseman) Dickerson.
He married
Sherri Downs on January 20, 1968 and they were married
until 1993.
He is survive by two sons- Brian and Stephen Dickerson both of Dowell, IL and two brothers- Leon Verseman and Robert Dickerson.
Funeral services were at 10:00 A.M., Friday, May 31, 2002 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Rev. Gerald Wright officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 8 P.M., Thursday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.
Interment was in the Sunset Memorial Park at Du Quoin..
Martha DeEtt McAllister Emerick
Martha DeEtt McAllister Emerick, 84, of DuQuoin, passed away Friday, May 3, 2002 at 5:20 a.m. in Doctors Health and Rehab Center in Salem, Ill.
Mrs. Emerick had been a seamstress, an antique dealer and was the Director of the DuQuoin Food Pantry. She was a member of First United Presbyterian Church. She was a member of Eastern Star Lodge 309, Past President of the Southern Illinois White Shrine Club, Faith Court of Order Amaranthus 29, Centralia, VFW Auxiliary and a 60-year member of Royal Neighbors and White Shrine Lodge.
She was born November 21, 1917 in DuQuoin, the daughter of Richard Thomas and Minnie (Wingert) McAllister. She married
Raymond Cross on November 22, 1947 and he preceded her in death on November 20, 1954. She then married
Dr. Cecil Emerick on May 19, 1959 at DuQuoin and he preceded her in death on August 28, 1972.
Surviving are a sister, Lillian Nausley of Wichita Falls, Tex.; nieces, Gail Kay Ortiz of Colorado Springs, Colo., Genie Zappanti of Henderson, Nev., Mary Ann Morris of DuQuoin and Martha Jane Stalewhiski of Arlinigton, Tex.; nephews, Richard W. McAllister of Springfield, Mike Swayne of DuQuoin, Andy Swayne of DuQuoin, Richard G. Swayne of Greenville and Bruce Swayne of Goldsboro, N.C.; several great nieces and nephews and one great-great-nephew.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, one sister and one brother.
Funeral services were Monday, May 6 at 8 p.m. at Neal-McClure Memorial Chapel with Rev. Fred Bishop officiating.
Graveside rites were conducted Wednesday, May 8 at 11 a.m. in Sunset Memorial Park, DuQuoin.

Earl T. Gant
Earl T. Gant 84, of Du Quoin, passed away at 3:50 P.M., Saturday, May 25, 2002 at the Fair View Nursing Center in Du Quoin.
Earl was a member of the First Christian Church of Du Quoin. Earl was a retired auto mechanic, he had worked at the Chevrolet garage for 20 years and had worked at Sims Motor for 10 years. He was a US Navy veteran of W.W. II. He was a Life member of the Du Quoin VFW and American Legion.
He was born December 23, 1917 at St. Johns, IL the son of Charlie and Myrtle A. (Mifflin) Gant.
He married
Lillie Elizabeth Poole on April 8, 1938 at Mt. Vernon, IN, she passed away May 29, 1998.
He is survived by three daughters- Robin Leehy and husband Kevin of Du Quoin, Rosemary Stein and Helen Blair, four grandchildren- Brandon, Thomas, Kristen and Kody Leehy, two great grandchildren- Haley and Kenton.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son- Thomas Wayne Gant, brothers- Pete, Larry, Ernie, sisters- Dorie and Mary Alice, step brother- Matthew Kennedy.
Funeral services were at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, May 29, 2002 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Rev. Merle Macke officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 8 P.M., Tuesday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.
Interment was in the Elkville cemetery.
Elsie L. Gaston
Elsie L. Gaston, age 61, of Pinckneyville, died suddenly in the Pinckneyville Community Hospital Emergency Room on Tuesday, May 21, 2002 at 11:37 a.m.
Elsie was born in Pinckneyville on October 10, 1940, the daughter of John and Leona (Harrell) Rednour. She was of the Baptist faith and was a member of the Goldplate of Perry County and American Heart Association. Elsie enjoyed her family and grandchildren.
She is survived by three daughters, Mary Grab of Pinckneyville, Monica Huggins of Carbondale and Brenda Houser of Danville; one son, Jeff Moore of Pinckneyville; one brother, Bud Rednour of DuQuoin; two sisters, Betty Reese of Coulterville and Evelyn Mericle; grandchildren, Scott Moll, April Huggins, Billy Huggins, Mikey Huggins, Jarret Gaston, Peyton Moore, Olivia Moore, Jessica Brooks and Jeremy Grab and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a brother, Allen Rednour, and three sisters, Joyce Folden, Stella Montgomery and Grace Montgomery.
Funeral services were held at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville on Friday, May 24 at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Raymond Baggott officiating. Interment was in the Mueller Hill cemetery in Pinckneyville.
Visitation was held at the funeral home on Thursday, May 23 from 6 to 9 p.m. and on Friday from 8 a.m. until services.

Hosea R. Harris
Hosea R. Harris Jr., 51, of Tamaroa, passed away at 6:33 P.M., Wednesday, May 29, 2002 at the Marshall Browning Hospital in Du Quoin.
Hosea was a retired coal mine examiner. He was a member of the Grace Baptist Church of Tamaroa. He was a member of the Du Quoin VFW Post 513. He was a US Army veteran of the Viet Nam War.
He was born November 6, 1950 at Du Quoin the son of Hosea R. Harris Sr.
He married
Vicki Goforth May 22, 1971 at Tamaroa, IL and she survives.
He is survived by his wife of Tamaroa, son- Andrew Shane Harris and wife Sharon of Tamaroa, two daughters- Rebecca LeAnn Harris of Tamaroa, Katie Lynn Harsy and husband Nathan of Tamaroa, brother- Steve Harris and wife Janet of Tamaroa, grandchildren- Jazzmine Sierra Crane and Kaci Marie Harris, step grandchild- Coy Alan Martin, several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father Hosea Harris, Sr., sister-in-law- Carole Bigham, close friend- Tony Winston.
Funeral services were at Noon, Sunday, June 2, 2002 at the Searby Funeral Home in Tamaroa with Rev. Raymond Baggott officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 8 P.M., Saturday at the Searby Fuenral Home in Tamaroa.
Interment was in the Tamaroa cemetery.
Military graveside rites were conducted by the Du Quoin VFW Post 513.

Edward H. Hemmer
Edward H. Hemmer, 71, of DuQuoin, passed away Saturday, May 11, 2002 at 2:10 p.m. in Marshall Browning Hospital.
Mr. Hemmer had been a coal miner at Freeman United. He attended First United Methodist Church. He served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict.
He was born September 12, 1930 in DuQuoin, the son of William O. and Mary Lydia (Wendling) Hemmer. He married
Shirley R. Neal on October 29, 1955 at DuQuoin.
Surviving are his wife, Shirley of DuQuoin; brother, Wilbur Hemmer of DuQuoin; sisters and brothers-in-law, Marcella and Ralph Hayes of Pinckneyville, Marie Mozi of DuQuoin, Patsy and Stanley Wheatley of DuQuoin and Betty and Frank Graff of Carterville; sister-in-law, Betty Hemmer of DuQuoin; brothers-in-law, James 'Bus' Neal of DuQuoin and Charles Redman of Pinckneyville and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Delbert.
Funeral services were Wednesday, May 15 at 10 a.m. at Neal-McClure Memorial Chapel with Rev. Carl Mesiti officiating. Interment was in Sunset Memorial Park.

Lena Mae Houghland-Dunavan
Lena Mae Houghland-Dunavan, 80, of Centralia, passed away Tuesday, May 7, 2002 at 12:05 p.m. in her home.
Mrs. Houghland-Dunavan was born April 26, 1922 in Mt. Vernon to Fred Capps and Olga (Kniffen) Capps. She married
Milton 'Dude' Houghland on February 28, 1953 in Mt. Vernon and he preceded her in death on April 14, 1983. She then married
Lee A. Dunavan on November 24, 1990 at Centralia and he survives.
Surviving are sons, Lyle Houghland and wife Marge and David Graham and wife Brenda, all of DuQuoin and Fred Graham and wife Judy of Ft. Lauderdale; daughters, Lois Jean Wrolen and husband Dick of Centralia, Brenda Froese and husband John of Belleville, Mary Smith and husband Tom of Centralia and Loretta Peak and husband Terry of Centralia; brothers, Richard Capps and wife Pansy and David Capps and friend Evelyn, all of Mt. Vernon; sisters, Evelyn Randall of Lewisville, Tex., Eva Jean Davenport and husband Howard of DeKalb and Anna Lee Sinks and husband Shorty of Rockford; 21 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her extended family: Danny Dunavan and wife Henrietta, Dale Dunavan and Randy Phillips and wife Leslie, all of Mt. Vernon and numerous grandchildren.
Besides her first husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Wanda Capps and Gwen Quinn and a brother, Omar Kniffen.
She was a mental health technician at Murray Center until her retirement in 1987.
She was a faithful member of the First Apostolic Church where she was a Sunday School teacher and served on the Hospitality Committee. She was a volunteer for the Ombudsman Program. She spent her life not only taking care of her family, but also serving others in any capacity she could. She made friends in all walks of life and during her six-month illness all that she had given came back to her in the form of cards, flowers, food and many remembrances shared with her family.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 10, 2002 at the First Apostolic Church in Centralia with Rev. Jonathon Urshan officiating. Interment was in Boyd cemetery.
Friends called at the First Apostolic Church in Centralia from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday and again on Friday until the service hour.
Memorials may be made to the First Apostolic Church Building Fund and these were accepted at the church or at the Pacey Funeral Home, which is in charge of arrangements.
Ella Mae Keene
Ella Mae Keene, age 86, of Pinckneyville, IL died in the Memorial Hospital in Carbondale, IL on Tuesday, May 07, 2002 at 1:36 p.m.
Ella was born on January 2, 1916, the daughter of John M. and Sarah J. (Stern) Poninski. She married
William D. Keene, Jr. in 1933 in Pinckneyville, IL and he preceded her in death on November 7, 1998. Ella was a member of St. Bruno Catholic Church in Pinckneyville, IL, former member of the Catholic Daughters of America, and a member of the former Elks Country Club in Pinckneyville, IL.
Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Harsy and husband, Ed, of Pinckneyville, IL, 2 sons, Cecil Keene and wife, Ruth, of Pinckneyville, IL, and Danny Keene and wife Debbie of Simpsonville, SC, one brother, Carl Poninski, of Florissant, MO, one sister, Aurelia Stevens, of Tamaroa, IL, nine grandchildren, Valerie, Billy, Linda, Tammy, and John Keene, Mark Harsy, Mitchell and wife Rebecca Harsy, Andrew and wife Amber Keene and Christopher Keene, three great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services were Friday, May 10, 2002 at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville, IL at 10:30 a.m. with Father John Venegoni and Reverend James Bush officiating. Interment was in the Oak Grove cemetery in Pinckneyville, IL.

Troy T. James
Troy T. James, 78, of DuQuoin, passed away Sunday, May 12, 2002 at 8:05 a.m. in St. Mary's Health Center in St. Louis, Mo.
Mr. Neal had been a coal miner and a member of First Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WW II. He was a member of DuQuoin VFW Post 513, American Legion Post 647 and the Eagles. Mr. James was co-founder and member of the DuQuoin Saddle Club and donated the land for the club. He was also a member of the American Quarter Horse Association.
He was born October 25, 1923 in Hardy, Arkansas, the son of Grover and Elva (Pruit) James. He married
Sylvia V. Case on October 24, 1942 at Corning, Arkansas.
Surviving are his wife, Sylvia James of DuQuoin; sons and daughters-in-law, Tommy James of DuQuoin, Allen and Sheila James of DuQuoin and Lonnie and Patricia James of DuQuoin; two brothers, Everette James of DuQuoin and Jessie L. James of DuQuoin; two sisters, Beulah Bridgewater Murphy of South Haven, Mississippi and Winnie Rogers of Corning, Arkansas; nine grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Yuovonne; six brothers and one sister.
Funeral services were Wednesday, May 15 at 1 p.m. at Neal-McClure Memorial Chapel with Rev. Bob Dickerson officiating. Interment was in Sunset Memorial Park in DuQuoin.
Friends called Tuesday, May 14 from 6 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 7:30 a.m. until time of service.
Graveside military rites were conducted by DuQuoin VFW Post 513.
