Elmo L. Feltmeyer
Elmo L. Feltmeyer, 91, of Tamaroa, passed away at 4:15 A.M., Saturday, July 27, 2002 at the Pinckneyville Community Hospital.
Elmo was retired from the State of Illinois Dept. of Transportation and a retired carpenter. He was a member of the St. Paul United Church of Christ at Pinckneyville and was a member of the Baldwin Masonic Lodge.
He was born March 17, 1911 at Pinckneyville, IL the son of Charley J. and Sophia (Schmdriede) Feltmeyer.
He married
Ella Grace Preston on October 23, 1935 at Pinckneyville and she survives.
He is survived by his wife, three sister-in-laws-Alice Feltmeyer of St. Louis, Hilda Preston of Gibson City, Viola Nickens of Tamaroa, special nephews- William Heisner, Gary Nickens, Danny Wilson as well as several other nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers- George, Harmon, Christian and Henry Feltmeyer, sisters- Annie Hopp, Mary Heisner, Elizabeth Rinehardt, Tillie Offerman and Minnie Flood.
Funeral services were at 11:00 A.M., Monday, July 29, 2002 at the Searby Funeral Home in Tamaroa with Rev. Raymond Baggott officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 8 P.M. Sunday at the Searby Fuenral Home in Tamaroa.
Interment was in the Tamaroa cemetery.

Donny Shanklin
Donny Shanklin, 46, of Union City, Tenn., died on June 9, 2002 at 3:30 a.m. in the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Union City, Tenn. after an extended illness.
Funeral services were held at the White-Ranson Funeral Home in Union City, Tenn. Wednesday, June 12 at 11 a.m. with Dr. William Sims officiating. Burial followed in the East View cemetery. Visitation was held at the funeral home on Tuesday, June 11 from 5 until 8 p.m. and on the day of service from 9 to 11 a.m.
Donny was born on May 10, 1956 in Moline, Ill., the son of Vernita (Wallace) Petty of Rutherford and the late Ronald Shanklin. He was united in marriage on August 3, 1996 to the former Elizabeth Ellen 'Beth' Emling, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clay Emling, of Pinckneyville, and she survives. He was employed as a maintenance supervisor at Martin Healthcare and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Union City, Tenn.
Survivors also include his daughter, Emily Rae Shanklin of Union City; two sons, Kurtis Michael Shanklin and Ronald Wesley Shanklin, both of Kenton, Tenn.; his sister, Mrs. John (Lavenia) Wiese of Kenton, Tenn.; his brother, Bill Shanklin of Union City, Tenn.; two half-sisters, Mrs. Ken (Shirley) Burzenski of Carmi, Ill. and Sandy Simpson of Rutherford; his half-brother, Dennis Shanklin of Ottumwa, Iowa; his step-brother, Bobby Rice Jr. of Murfreesboro, Tenn. and several uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews.

Charlotte May Marie Vogel
Charlotte May Marie Vogel, 75, of Du Quoin, passed away at 10:32 P.M., Saturday, June 15, 2002 at her residence.
Charlotte was a homemaker and a member of the First Christian Church of Du Quoin. She was a member of the CWF and many church organizations.
She was born September 18, 1926 at Benton, IL the daughter of James and Flossie (Glover) Jarvis.
She was first married
to Bob G. Smith and he preceded her in death, she then married
Arthur W. Vogel on December 21, 1979 at Covington, KY he passed away January 2, 1999.
She is survived by three children- Sandra Jean Hill and husband Dwight of Du Quoin, Mary Ellen Loveall of St. Louis, MO, Daniel Ray Smith and wife Jane of Benton, sister- Mary Jo McDermott and husband Jack of Rolla, MO, eleven grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, parents, one great grandchild.
Funeral services were at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, June 18, 2002 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Rev. John Lewis officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 8 P.M., Monday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.
Interment was in the Masonic-Oddfellows cemetery at Benton.

Richard M. Carson
Richard M. Carson, 77, of Portland, Oregon, passed away Sunday, July 25, 2002.
Mr. Carson was a Dentist and worked primarily for the V.A. Hospital. He served in the Army and Air Force in World War II and the Korean Conflict. He remained in the Air Force Reserves until 1971.
Mr. Carson was born in New York City on March 9, 1925. He married
Mary Zoeckler on October 19, 1946.
Mr. Carson graduated from St. Louis University Dental School in 1948. He practiced Dentistry in Sheridan, Wyoming for 17 years. He then moved to Portland in 1967 and practiced dentistry at the V.A. Hospital until his retirement. Mr. Carson also taught at a dental school.
Surviving are his wife, Mary; daughter, Lesley Carson; son, Brett Carson and daughter, Dru Rosenthal and eight grandchildren.
A private funeral service was held. Arrangements were by Autumn Funerals and Cremations of Tigard.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or American Heart Association, restricted to research.
Michale Paul Smith
Michael Paul 'Mike' Smith, age 90, of Pinckneyville, passed away in the Pinckneyville Community Hospital on Saturday, June 8, 2002 at 3:34 p.m.
Michael was born on May 26, 1912 in DuQuoin, the son of Henry G. and Gertrude Kelly Smith. He married
Audrey Bigham on May 23, 1936 and she survives. Michael worked as a coal miner for the United Electric Coal Co. near DuQuoin and was a member of the United Mine Workers of America Local #5134. He was also a member of First United Presbyterian Church in Pinckneyville, the Pinckneyville Mitchell Lodge #85 A.F. & A.M., a member of the Consistory of Belleville 32nd Degree and a member of the Eastern Star. Michael was an avid hunter, fisherman and golfer.
Survivors include his wife Audrey of Pinckneyville; three sons, Jack L. Smith and wife Jean of Sparta, Richard P. Smith and wife Judy of Lakewood, Wash. and Michael C. Smith and wife Janelle of McDonough, Ga.; a brother, Percy Smith of DuQuoin; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, June 12 at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Tom Hobson officiating. Interment was in the Mueller Hill cemetery in Pinckneyville.
Visitation was held at the funeral home on Tuesday, June 11 from 5 until 9 p.m. and on Wednesday from 8 a.m. until services.
Memorials may be made to the Mary Carpenter Kuykendall Heart Fund or the American Cancer Society.
A Masonic Service was held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday evening.
Genevieve Ferne Flieg
Genevieve Ferne Flieg, 92, of Du Quoin formerly of Herculaneum, MO, passed away at 4:55 A.M., Thursday, July 25, 2002 at the Fair View Nursing Center in Du Quoin.
Ferne was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church of Herculaneum-Pevely, MO.
She was born March 5, 1910 at Sprott, MO the daughter of Maurice Rueben and Stella May (Conardy) Phillips.
She married
Alfred August Flieg on September 28, 1929 at Festus, Mo he died January 16, 1980.
She is survived by three grandsons- Kenneth Wayne DeMent of Du Quoin, Barry Lynn DeMent of Zellwood, FL, James Randall DeMent of Du Quoin, three great grandchildren- Jennifer Elaine DeMent, Jacob Allyn DeMent, Deann Michelle DeMent, two sisters- Grace Tull of Festus, MO, Maxine Baum of Imperial, MO.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter- Catherine Joyce DeMent, sister- Iris Klein, brother- Gene Phillips.
Funeral services were at 3:00 P.M., Sunday, July 28, 2002 at the Vinyard Funeral Home at Pevely, MO with Rev. M. Shaw DeMent officiating.
Friends called from 6 to 8 P.M. Saturday at the Vinyard Funeral Home in Pevely, MO.
Interment was in the Herculaneum cemetery at Herculaneum, MO.
The Searby Funeral Home of Du Quoin was in charge of arrangements.

Mary E. McDonald
Mary E. McDonald, 70, of Ottawa, formerly of DuQuoin, passed away Saturday, June 22, 2002 at her daughter's home.
She was born March 19, 1932 in Cornell, Ill., the daughter of Arnold and Florence (Cassidy) Ide. She married
C. James McDonald on December 19, 1949 in Pontiac, Ill.
Mr. and Mrs. McDonald operated the J & M Mobile Home Park in DuQuoin for over 20 years.
Surviving are her husband; mother, Florence Metroz of Pontiac; daughter, Pam McDonald of Ottawa; three sons, Mike (Abbie) of Ottawa, Dan (Judy) of Beach Island, S.C. and Pat (LouAnn) if Marseilles; seven grandchildren, Ken, Carrie, Joshua, Cody, Casey and Cassidy McDonald and Michelle Bradish and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father.
Memorial services were at a later date. Ottawa Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Roberta M. Kunkel
Roberta M. Kunkel died peacefully at her Olympia home June 2, 2002.
She was born January 28, 1918 in DuQuoin to Blanche Electa M. Keller and Arthur J. Keller. She was married
to Clifford L. Kunkel for 64 years.
Roberta was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Ronald Kunkel and a sister, Genevieve Fruit.
She is survived by a sister, Ruth Crews; three children, Donald Kunkel, JoAnn Coleman and Thomas Kunkel. She enjoyed her 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Roberta was an active member of the 1918 club and the College Street Christian Church.
Services were held at the College Street Christian Church on Friday, June 7 at 11 a.m. and viewing was from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Interment followed at the Odd Fellows cemetery.
Refreshments and sharing time were at the College Christian Church starting at 1:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to College Street Christian Church of Lacey or the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
Blanche L. Breeding
Blanche L. Breeding 86, of Du Quoin, passed away at 9:45 A.M., Sunday, July 28, 2002 at the Marshall Browning Hospital in Du Quoin.
Blanche was a homemaker. She was a member of the Second Baptist Church of Du Quoin, the Du Quoin Ladies Club and the Marshall Browning Hospital Auxiliary.
She was born April 19, 1916 at Du Quoin the daughter of Ray and Frankie (Lane) Wheatley.
She married
George Breeding on November 6, 1964 at Omaha, NE, he passed away June 15, 1998.
She is survived by three daughters- Shirley Emling of Villa Vista, AR, Helen Minnick of Du Quoin, Ann Longshore of Cunningham, TN, a son- Sherman Longshore of Spokane, WA, daughter-in-law- Ina Longshore of Du Quoin, four step children all of Des Moines, IA, brother- Elmer Wheatley of Springfield, sister- Helen Hamilton of Pecatonica, fifteen grandchildren, fourteen step grandchildren, several great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Maurice Longshore.
Funeral services were at 10:00 A.M., Thursday, August 1, 2002 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Rev. C.L. McKinnies officiating.
Friends called from 9 to 10 A.M. Thursday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.
Interment was in the I.O.O.F. cemetery at Du Quoin.

John T. Stiens
John T. Stiens, 59, of Tamaroa, passed away at 9:59 A.M., Saturday, June 29, 2002 at the St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro.
John was lead maintenance man at Penn Aluminum at Murphysboro. He was a member of the Nine Mile Baptist Church at Tamaroa. He was a US Army veteran of the Viet Nam War serving as a X-Ray Tech. He was a member of the IBEW Local.
John was born August 16, 1942 at Cutler, IL the son of Aloysius and Norma Marjorie (Wise) Stiens.
He married
Patricia A. Pickett on March 4, 1967 at Sparta, IL and she survives.
He is survived by his wife of Tamaroa, four children- Stephanie Wilson of Centralia, Charlotte Stiens of Carbondale, Robby Stiens of Mt. Vernon, Crystal Stiens of Du Quoin, brother- James Stiens of Percy, four sisters- Janet Brandon of Downieville, CA, Judy Kinney of Sparta, Jennifer Smith of Sparta, Jackie Stiens of Sparta, five grandchildren- Rachel Wilson, Lois Wilson, Beverly Wilson, Tyler Lyday and Gabrielle Stiens.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister JoAnn.
Funeral services were at 1:00 P.M., Tuesday, July 2, 2002 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Rev. Kevin Carrothers officiating.
Friends called from 6 to 9 P.M., Monday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.
Interment was in the Tamaroa cemetery.

Military graveside rites were conducted by the Du Quoin VFW Post 513.
