Norma E. Williams
Norma E. Williams, 83, of Du Quoin, passed away at 10:34 A.M., Thursday, May 23, 2002 at the Memorial Hospital in Chester.
Norma was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church of Du Quoin.
She was born April 23, 1919 at Pinckneyville, IL the daughter of Ezra and Florence ( Pitchford) Ferguson.
She married
Louis "Bill" Williams on November 16, 1936 at Pinckneyville, IL he passed away April 12, 1996.
She is survived by a daughter- Delana Marie Gremmels of Chester, two sons- Elmer Williams and Louis Ardell Williams both of Du Quoin, sister- Jean Leehy of Du Quoin, four grandchildren, four great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two brothers.
Funeral services were at 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, May 28, 2002 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Rev. Mike Fogerson officiating.
Friends called from 9 to 11 A.M. Tuesday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.
Interment was in the Old Du Quoin cemetery.
Raymond A. Neal
Raymond A. Neal Sr. died Saturday, May 4, 2002 after a long, courageous fight with cancer. He was born September 26, 1926 in DuQuoin and was a resident of Shreveport, Louisiana until 1990 when he moved to Karnack, Texas, where he resided until six months prior to his death.
By his wish, Mr. Neal was cremated and a visitation was held on Wednesday, May 8 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Osborn Funeral Home.
Mr. Neal attended local schools in DuQuoin. He graduated from the University of Illinois. He was employed by Southwestern Electric Power Company, where he served many years prior to his retirement.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Merrill Ralph Neal and Bessie Sights Neal, and his brothers, Stanley L. Neal and Beverly Eugene Neal.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Catherine E. 'Sue' Neal; three sons, Raymond A. Neal Jr. and his wife, Jacqueline, of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, Phillip M. Neal and his wife, Katie, of Thibodaux, Louisiana and Eric J. Neal and his wife, Roberta, of Columbia Maryland; three daughters, Katie Beth Levine and her husband, Al, of Katy, Texas, Debra N. Ervin and her husband, Dick, of Bossier City, Louisiana and Michele N. Cooksey and her husband, Jef, f of Keithville, Louisiana; one sister, Edna H. Emling and husband Russell; numerous grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Ray's family would like to than the staff of Garden Park Nursing Home and the doctors and staff at Willis Knighton North for the care provided to him during the last six months of his life. A special thought of gratitude is extended to Kim Holley of MHC Hospice of her loving care of Ray during the last month of his life. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes memorials to MHC Hospice, 8508 Line Ave., Ste. C, Shreveport, LA 71106.

John Smetana
John Smetana Jr., 71, of Belleville, passed away Thursday, May 2, 2002 at his residence.
Mr. Smetana had been a truck driver for the Teamster's Union.
He was born September 11, 1930 in DuQuoin to John Smetana Sr. and Marie (Marie) Smetana. He married
Billie Dean Cremer and she preceded him in death. He then married
Anna Lorraine Gaston and she preceded him in death.
Surviving are a special friend, Lola Berhens; five sons, John (Linda) Smetana of Houston, Texas, Stephen (Annette) Smetana of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Charles (Michelle) Smetana of Houston, Texas, Thomas (Barbara) Smetana of Germany and Chris (Lynn) Smetana of Brighton, Ill.; one daughter, Kathy (Mark) Tullock of Freeburg, Ill.; brother, Frank Smetana of St. Louis, Mo.; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two wives and a brother, Rudolph Smetana.
Funeral services were Monday, May 6 at 10 a.m. at Pete Gaerdner Funeral Home in Belleville. Interment was in Oddfellows cemetery in DuQuoin.
Friends called Sunday at Pete Gaerdner Funeral Home in Belleville from 4 to 8 p.m.

Robert S. Satterfield
Robert S. 'Bob' Satterfield, 81, formerly of DuQuoin, passed away Saturday, May 18 at his home in Fairfield, Calif.
He was born April 10, 1921 to Raymond 'Pop' and Nellie Stanley Satterfield.
He served in the U.S. Submarine Service during WW II.
Mr. Satterfield is survived by his wife, Helen, of Fairfield; step-son, Joseph Bugai, of Fairfield and step-daughter, Susan (Brian) Cook, of Milford. He is also survived by three sisters, Louise (Olin) Galloway, Ruby Brock and Juanita (Kenneth) Porter, all of DuQuoin, and two brothers, Walter (Doris) Satterfield of Madera, Calif. and Eugene (Velma) Satterfield of Merced, Calif. Four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 23 at Bryan Baker Funeral Home Chapel with the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #861 Ritual Team presiding.
Walter Roethe
Walter Roethe, 78, of Columbia, Ill., died Thursday, May 23, 2002 at St. Anthony's Medical Center in St. Louis, Mo.
Born in Pinckneyville on Wednesday, July 25, 1923, he was the son of the late Otto and Christina (Beck) Roethe. He retired as a Maintenance Supervisor at Ameren UE in St. Louis, Mo.
He was the husband of Dorothy (Beck) Roethe.
He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Columbia, Ill. He served in WW II in the U.S. Army. He also served in the Korean War in the U.S. Army. Memberships include V.F.W. Post #7980, American Legion Post #502, both of Millstadt, honorary member of the Millstadt Volunteer Fire Dept., Monroe County Farm Bureau and the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Sherry (Kerry) Blass of Crystal Lake; a son, Steve (Cherie) Roethe of Pawnee, sister, Mildred Ziegler of Pinckneyville; brother, Carl (Isabelle) Roethe of Pinckneyville; brothers and sisters-in-law, Edna Roethe and Hilda Roethe, both of Pinckneyville, Eileen Beck of Ballwin, Mo., Ronald (Ruth) Beck of Tacoma, Wash. and Lucille (Roger) Pyatt of Naples, Fla.; grandchildren, Nathan and Michael Roethe and Anna, April and Arnie Blass and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by two sons in infancy and two brothers, Herbert and Ervin Roethe.
Funeral services were held at St. Paul Lutheran Church at 10 a.m. on Saturday with Pastor Steven Theiss officiating.
Graveside services were held at Sunset Memorial Park in DuQuoin at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Friends were invited to call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Lawlor funeral Home in Columbia.

Fred L. Phillips
Fred L. Phillips, 60, of DuQuoin, passed away at 10 a.m. Friday, May 10, 2002 at John Cockran V.A. Hospital in St. Louis, Mo.
Mr. Phillips was a mechanic and a member of First Christian Church. He served in the military during the Cuban Conflict and had lived in DuQuoin for most of his life.
He was born August 18, 1941 in DuQuoin, the son of Fred and Louise (Heape) Phillips.
Surviving are a special friend, Danny Ginn of DuQuoin; step-father, Speedy Jackson of DuQuoin; one brother, Gary Phillips of LePorte, Texas and two sisters, Linda (Jack) Taylor and Shirley (Gary) Kiefer, all of DuQuoin.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.
Funeral services were Wednesday, May 15 at 10 a.m. in Maxton Funeral Chapel with Rev. John Lewis officiating. Interment was in the IOOF cemetery in DuQuoin.
Friends called after 6 p.m. Tuesday at Maxton Chapel in DuQuoin.
Memorials may be made to First Christian Church and will be accepted at the funeral home.
J. Clyde Kimmel
J. Clyde Kimmel, 96, of Robinson, Ill, died after a lingering illness at approximately 6 a.m. Wednesday, February 20, 2002 at his home.
Born January 13, 1906 in Elkville, he was the son of Edward and Ada Schwartz Kimmel. He owned and operated Kimmel's Men Store on the Square in Robinson, Ill. for 43 years. he was a member of the Robinson First United Methodist church and the Robinson Elks Lodge #1188.
On June 4, 1927, he married
Nelle Swain, who preceded him in death on March 30, 1992. Also preceding him in death were his parents; two sisters, Miss Berta Kimmel and Mrs. Alta Atkins and a brother, Dewey Kimmel, all long-time residents of Elkville and/or DuQuoin.
The Kimmel and Schwartz families were some of the original founders of Elkville.
On September 3, 1994, he married
Sarah Brashear Woodard, who survives. Also surviving are a niece, Roberta Atkins Daschner and husband, Del, of Jacksons Gap, Alabama; two step-daughters and their husbands, Shirley and Ron West of Terre Haute, Indiana and Marilyn and James R. Smith of Cypress, Texas and a step-son and his wife, Don and Dorothy Woodard of Pleasanton, California.
The funeral was held on Sunday, February 24 at Robinson First United Methodist Church with Rev. James Barnett and Rev. Louis Youngs officiating. Burial was in the Robinson New cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Robinson First United Methodist Church or to the Lincolnland Hospice.
Darlene Delores Kerry
Darlene Delores Kerry, 71, of Du Bois, passed away at 8:05 P.M. Thursday, April 4, 2002 at the home of her son in St. Louis, MO.
Darlene was a retired rural mail carrier for the US Postal service. She was a Catholic and a member of the National Rural Carriers Association.
She was born May 14, 1930 at Plum Hill, IL the daughter of Leon Christ and Mary Elizabeth Louise ( Heck) Klamm.
She first married
Lee Roy Bertrand McKinzie in October 1946 at Nashville, IL, he died February 17, 1997. She married
Richard C. Kerry on July 12, 1979 at Nashville, IL he died October 7, 2001.
She is survived by two daughters- Linda Trudeau of Merced, CA, Denise McKinzie of Elizabethtown, IN, son- Micahel McKinzie of St. Louis, MO, two step daughters- Sheryl Bruce of Long Beach, CA, Laura Dalman of Du Bois, IL, brother- Leonard Klamm of Du Bois, IL, sister- Lavern Udarholt of Ashley, IL, ten grandchildren, eight great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands.
Funeral services were at 1:30 P.M., Sunday, April 7, 2002 at the Searby Funeral Home in Tamaroa with Msgr. Melvin Vandeloo officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 8 P.M. Saturday at the Searby Funeral Home in Tamaroa.
Interment was in the Chapel Hill cemetery at Du Bois.
Logan Ryan Rogers
Logan Ryan Rogers, age seven months and 19 days, of Elkville, died Saturday, April 13, 2002 at Marshall Browning Hospital in Du Quoin.
Logan was born August 25, 2001 in Carbondale, the son of Thomas Lee Rogers and Christina Lorraine Harper. He was a member of the Berean Christian Church in Murphysboro.
Survivors include his parents, both of Elkville; maternal grandparents Rick and Lori Harper of Murphysboro; paternal grandparents Tom and Mary Rogers of Elkville; maternal great-grandparents Bill and Arnette Ryan and Bill and Jeanette Harper, all of Murphysboro; paternal great-grandparents Don and Jackie Middleton of Buckner and Bill and Eileen Cooney of Steger; great-great-grandmothers Grace Varady of Collinsville and Mary Farris of Conover, N.C.; uncles Ryan Harper and Alden Harper, both of Murphysboro and Donnie Rogers of Elkville; and numerous great aunts, great uncles and cousins.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 16, 2002 at Crawshaw Funeral Home in Murphysboro with Rev. Mark O. Wingo officiating. Interment was in Murdale Gardens of Memory in Murphysboro. Friends called from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Benjamin Dale Davison
Benjamin Dale Davison, 80, of DuQuoin, passed away at 7:41 p.m. Friday, September 20, 2002 at his residence.
Mr. Davison was retired from Emerson Electric in St. Louis, Mo. He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ. He was a veteran of WW II.
He was born September 27, 1921 in DuQuoin, the son of Benjamin and Lula Maud (Beard) Davison. He married
Katherine Woll on November 27, 1941 at St. Louis, Mo. and she preceded him in death on April 28, 1996. Mr. Davison lived most of his life in DuQuoin.
Surviving are a sister-in-law, Lois Davison of DuQuoin; a brother-in-law, Ralph (Virginia) Woll and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and one brother.
Funeral services were Tuesday, September 24 at 11 a.m. at Maxton Funeral Chapel in DuQuoin with Rev. Paul Schultz officiating. Interment was in Sunset Memorial Park in DuQuoin.
Friends called after 9 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Oscar E. Maclin
Oscar E. Maclin, 84, passed away peacefully July 23, 2002 in a local nursing home.
Mr. Maclin was born in DuQuoin and spent most of his life in Bakersfield, Calif. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1980. He was a veteran of World War II and an active member of the disabled American Veterans, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Order of the Moose and the Eagles. He also served for many years as treasurer of the Local Letter Carriers Union.
Mr. Maclin was predeceased by his parents, Zella and Oscar Everett Maclin. His survivors include his wife, Nadine Maclin; three sisters, Evelyn Bence, Frances Bennett and Roberta Willbanks; a step-daughter, Donna L. White and her husband, Gene White, of Winfall, N.C.; a step-son, Gary Short and his wife, Kay Short, of Bakersfield, Calif. He is also survived by six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was conducted at the Mish Funeral Home Oildale Chapel at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, July 29. Visitation took place prior to the service at 1 p.m. Cremation followed and the final resting place was to be determined at a later date.
Vallie Ray Zettler
Vallie Ray Zettler Sr., 53, of Scheller, passed away at 12:01 A.M. Saturday, September 14, 2002 at his residence.
Vallie had worked as a coal mine laborer and was a Baptist.
He was born February 14, 1949 at Christopher, IL the son of Louie and Annie (Moore) Zettler.
He married
Carolyn M. Knapp on September 12, 1998 at the White Oak Church at Tamaroa and she survives.
He is survived by his wife of Scheller, children- Sherry VonnWright of Akin, Vallie Ray Zettler Jr. of Ivesdale, Katrina Ann-Marie Zettler of Scheller, step son- Adam Schwartz of Herrin, four grandchildren- Vincent Ray Zettler, Chelsie Renee Barnfield, Vance Ray Zettler and Brianna Jo Wright, brothers- Frank Zettler of Loda, Clarence Zettler of Sesser, sister- Sarah Jane Cash of Sesser.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother- Samuel Carl Zettler and eight infant brothers & sisters.
Funeral services were at 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, September 17, 2002 at the Searby Funeral Home in Tamaroa with Rev. Gary Pate and Rev. M. Shaw DeMent officiating.
Friends called from 10 to 11 A.M. Tuesday at the Searby Funeral Home in Tamaroa.
Interment was in the Paradise cemetery at Tamaroa.
