Regina Bernice Grabowski
Regina Bernice Grabowski. 79, of Tamaroa, passed away at 10:30 A.M., Monday, September 2, 2002 at the home of her daughter.
Regina was a retired elementary school teacher. She was a member of the St. Charles Catholic Church in Du Bois, the St. Theresa Altar Sodality and the Retired Teachers Association.
She was born September 9, 1922 at Tamaroa, IL the daughter of Leo and Clara (Szczepanski) Wepiewski.
She married
John P. Grabowski on November 28, 1946 at Du Bois, IL, he passed away January 24, 1986.
She is survived by a daughter- Monica Bochantin and husband Curtis of Tamaroa, son- Greg Grabowski of Tamaroa, grandchildren- Michele Pigg, James Owens, Roy Owens, Victoria Owens, sister- Bernice Farrell of Colorado and two great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters- Leona Smith and Mary Rusiewski.
Funeral services were at 10:00 A.M., Thursday, September 5, 2002 at the St. Charles Catholic Church in Du Bois with Msgr. Melvin Vandeloo officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 8 P.M., Wednesday at the Searby Funeral Home Tamaroa. The Rosary was recited at 7:30 P.M. Wednesday at the Searby Funeral Home.
Entombment was in the St. Charles cemetery at Du Bois.

Sonny Keigley
Sonny Keigley, 85, of Du Quoin, passed away at 1:24 A.M., Wednesday, September 25, 2002 at the Marshall Browning Hospital in Du Quoin.
Sonny was a retired warehouse packer at Beverly Hills Transfer Storage. He was a member of the Faith Assembly of God Church in Du Quoin. He was a member of the Teamsters Local Union.
He was born July 31, 1917 at Du Quoin, IL, the son of Walter and Rosie (Miller) Keigley.
He married
Imo Huggins on March 8, 1943 in Murphysboro, IL and she survives.
He is survived by his wife of Du Quoin, three daughters - Gloria Hoyle and husband Michael of Vancouver, WA, Barbara Sholund and husband John of Vancouver, WA, and Janet DeWitt of Vancouver, WA, seven grandchildren - Dawneva Sasse, Yvonne Edgell, Christine Lemley, Jonathan Sholund, Nataleigh DeWitt, Nathan DeWitt and Noel DeWitt, all of Vancouver, WA, six great-grandchildren, sister - Gleda Stanley of Des Plaines, IL and sister-in-law - Emma Lea Harrison of Du Quoin, IL
He was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters, and two brothers.
Funeral services were at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, September 28, 2002 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Rev. Keith Filer officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 8 P.M., Friday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.
Interment was in the IOOF cemetery at Du Quoin.
Brooklyn Dawn Raysby
Brooklyn Dawn Raysby, 19 month old daughter of Brandy L. Raysby of Du Quoin, passed away at 10:30 P.M., Friday, September 20, 2002 at the Childrens Hospital in St. Louis.
Brooklyn was born January 30, 2002 at Du Quoin, IL the daughter of Brandy L. Raysby.
She attended the Christian Fellowship Church of Du Quoin.
Brooklyn is survived by her mother of Du Quoin, sister- Tanisha Nicole Elizabeth Raysby of Du Quoin, Grandparents- Pamela and Roger Hiller of Christopher, David Raysby of Du Quoin, Violet VanHoorebeke of Du Quoin, Great Grandmother- Evelyn Carrel, Aunts and Uncles- Nicole Raysby, Tina Adkerson, Eric Overton, Tony Young and Kenneth Raysby.
Graveside services were at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, September 24, 2002 at the Sunset Memorial Park in Du Quoin with Rev. Percy Pavloff officiating.
Friends called from 9 to 10 A.M., Tuesday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.
Interment was in the Sunset Memorial Park at Du Quoin.
Vanada V. Walters
Vanada V. (Sudano) Walters, 87, of Wheaton formerly of Dowell, passed away at 5:10 A.M., Wednesday, September 18, 2002 at the Windscape Rehab Center in Wheaton.
Vanada was a homemaker and of the protestant faith.
She was born June 14, 1915 at Coello, IL the daughter of Thomas and Eliza (Eichelman) Bullock.
She married
Earl Walters and he preceded her in death in 1977.
She is survived by two daughters- Barbara Bova Bullard of Evansville, IN, and Lyla Maryln Szurgot of Warrenville, IL, eighteen grandchildren and twenty five great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, children- Beverly Ann, Phyllis, John and Kenneth, and four brothers.
Funeral services were at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, September 21, 2002 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Rev. Carl Mesiti officiating.
Friends called from 6 to 8 P.M. Friday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.
Interment was in the Mulkeytown cemetery.
Louis Dean Young
Louis Dean Young, 79, of Orange, California, formerly of DuQuoin, passed away Tuesday, September 3, 2002 in Orange, Calif.
Mr. Young was born April 23, 1923 in DuQuoin, the son of Louis J. and Clara (Hirsch) Young. He married
Dorothy Price in 1945 in Forth Worth, Texas.
After serving as a Marine in W.W. II and the Korean Conflict, he was honorably discharged as a Chief Warrant Officer. Louis was a graduate of S.I.U. He worked as a Construction Superintendent in California until his retirement.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Young of Orange, Calif.; five children, Mary L. Barnes of Tempe, Ariz., Alice M. Costner of Mira Loma, Calif., John E. Young of Orange, Calif., William D. Young of Phelan, Calif. and Doris J. Fischer of Orange, Calif.; one sister, Linda Mackey; one brother, Dale Young; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 21, 2002 at IOOF cemetery in DuQuoin. Burial will follow.
Neal-McClure Funeral Home in DuQuoin was in charge of arrangements.
Roy Wayne Ward
Roy Wayne Ward, 78, of Odin, formerly of Pinckneyville, died Friday, September 20, 2002 at his home.
He was born December 12, 1923 in Kell, the son of Rev. J.A. and Amelia Hawkins Ward, who preceded him in death.
A retired Regional Manager for Pioneer Seed Co., he was also engaged in farming. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Salem, an Ordained Deacon and a former Sunday School teacher for many years. He was a member of the Marion County Antique Tractor Club. He served during WW II in the United States Marines and was a VFW member.
He married
Mabel Taylor at St. Charles, Mo. on May 9, 1942 and she survives in Odin.
Also surviving are his son, Jerry L. Ward of Portland, Ore.; daughters, Dr. Janet Ward Broombaugh and husband Gene of Pinckneyville and Julie Lynn Ward Evans of Dallas, Tex.; son-in-law, Keith Evans of Bement; sister, Naomi Johnson of Odin; grandchildren, Jason and Sarah Ward of Mt. Zion, Gena Broombaugh of Carbondale, Jana and Caleb Rath of Carterville, Lcpl. Jeremy Ward Broombaugh, U.S. Marines serving in Japan and fiancee Rachel Downs of DuQuoin, Jordan Ward and Jennifer Ward, both of Portland, Ore. and great-grandchildren, Jacob Ward and Cayleigh Rath.
In addition to his parents, brothers Fred and Gerald Ward preceded him in death.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 24 at the First Baptist Church in Salem with Revs. Andy DeWitt and Robert Ward officiating. Burial followed in the County Line cemetery at Kell with military honors accorded at the gravesite by the Salem American Legion Post.
Visiting hours were from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Rankin Funeral Home in Salem and from 10 a.m. until the service hour at the church on Tuesday.
Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the First Baptist Church.
Norma Marie McKenzie
Norma Marie McKenzie, age 60, of Pinckneyville, died at her home on Monday, September 9, 2002 at 8:55 a.m.
Norma was born in Pinckneyville on February 23, 1942, the daughter of Lester and Myrtle (Magerkurth) Woodside. She married
Max E. McKenzie and he survives. Norma was a member of the Concord Baptist Church in Rice.
Survivors include her husband, Max McKenzie; her mother, Myrtle Rackley; two sons, Tom McKenzie and wife Christine and Michael McKenzie and wife Rebecca, all of Pinckneyville; three brothers, Donald R. Woodside of Pinckneyville, Larry P. Woodside and wife Phyllis of Pinckneyville and Randy R. Woodside and wife Sharon of Rice; two sisters, Judith Davis and husband David of Nashville and Debra Heggemeier and husband Kevin of Pinckneyville and numerous other nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her father; a brother, Russell Lester Woodside and a sister, Sharon Kay Sides.
Funeral services were held at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville on Wednesday, September 11 at 1 p.m. with Rev. Charles Smith officiating. Interment was in the Concord cemetery in Rice.
Visitation was at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home on Tuesday from 6 until 9 p.m. and on Wednesday from 8 a.m. until services.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Perry County.
Ralph Prusacki
Ralph Prusacki 79, of Du Quoin, passed away at 12:20 P.M., Wednesday, August 7, 2002 at his residence from effects of ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease).
Ralph was a retired farmer and dock expediter for the US Postal Service. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Du Quoin, charter member of the Knights of Columbus # 4476, American Legion Post 647, Lifetime member of Du Quoin VFW Post 513, NARFE- Carbondale branch, Perry County Farm Bureau. Ralph was a US Navy veteran of W. W. II.
He was born June 10, 1923 at St. Louis, MO, the son of Mike S. and Rose E. (Nikrant) Prusacki.
He married
Dorothy M. Liszewski on October 5, 1946 at the St. Charles Church in Du Bois and she survives.
He is survived by his wife of Du Quoin, two sons- Joseph Prusacki and wife Carla of Sterling, VA, Karl Prusacki of Du Quoin, two daughters- Joan Guciardo and husband Jack of Belleville, Mary Lynn Szperra and husband Jim of Du Bois, daughter-in-law- Cyrilla Prusacki of Du Quoin, four grandchildren- Elizabeth Szperra of Du Bois, Renee, Dana and Marc Prusacki all of Du Quoin, two brothers- Michael R. Prusacki and wife Rosalea of Du Quoin, Leon Prusacki and wife Connie of Tamaroa, sister- Bernice Nowakowski of Tamaroa, several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son- Randall Prusacki, sister- Laverne Kabat, two brothers-in-law- Arthur Kabat and Tom Nowakowski.
Funeral services were at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, August 10, 2002 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Du Quoin with Msgr. Harry Jerome officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 8 P.M., Friday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin. The Rosary was recited at 9:30 A.M. Saturday at the funeral home.
Interment was in the Sacred Heart cemetery at Du Quoin.
Military graveside rites were conducted by the Du Quoin VFW Post 513.

Zella M. Bates
Zella M. Bates, 84, of Sesser, passed away at 9:45 a.m. Sunday, September 22, 2002 at Good Samaritan R.H.C. in Mt. Vernon.
Mrs. Bates was a homemaker and a member of Bear Point Free Will Baptist Church. She was also a member of the American Legion and V.F.W. Auxiliary and Eagles Auxiliary of Sesser.
She was born October 30, 1917 in Mulkeytown, the daughter of Archie and Lula (Vaughn) Spann. She married
Harry T. Bates and he preceded her in death.
Surviving are children, Brenda Loucks of Sesser; grandchildren, Gerald Harle Jr., Brian Wilson, and Jullie D. Miller; great-grandchildren, Kevin and Zachary Harle, Travis Miller, Heather, Jennifer and Richie Blacklock and Alexandria and Ashley Wilson; siblings, Pauline Berg of Mulkeytown, Helen Cockrum of Decatur, Marion (Tubby) Spann of Springfield and Viva Morgan of Jupiter, Florida.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers, Cotton and Red Spann and one sister, Pearl Prior.
Funeral services were Wednesday, September 25 at 11 a.m. at Bear Point Free Will Baptist Church in Sesser with Bro. Larry Cook officiating. Interment was in Maple Hill cemetery in Sesser.
Friends called after 6 p.m. Tuesday at Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home in Sesser and from 10 a.m. until time of service on Wednesday at the church.
Mary Nehrkorn
Mary Nehrkorn, 65, of Tamaroa, Illinois, passed away Tuesday, August 27, 2002 at 3:55 AM at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.
Mary was a Christian and fellowshiped with the Covenant Family Church of Benton. She was a homemaker and had worked for five years at P.R. Mallory Company.
She was born October 12, 1936 at Tamaroa, Illinois, the daughter of Frank and Martha (Andrews) Naliborski. She married
James L. Nehrkorn on October 6, 1956 at St. Charles Church, DuBois, Illinois and he survives.
She is survived by her husband of Tamaroa, daughter, Michelle Rojek and husband William of Du Quoin, grandson, Justin Rojek of Du Quoin, two sisters, Rose Ertolacci of Wilmington, Illinois and Frances Naliborski of Yorba Linda, California, one brother, James Naliborski of Carlsbad, New Mexico.
She was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services were at 10 AM, Thursday, August 29, 2002 at Searby Funeral Home, Tamaroa with Pastor John Sweet officiating.
Friends called from 6-8 PM, Wednesday, August 28, 2002 at Searby Funeral Home, Tamaroa.
Interment was in the Tamaroa cemetery.

Dr. John A. Mathis
Dr. John A. Mathis, age 96, of Venice, Fla., formerly of Pinckneyville, passed away Tuesday morning, August 13, 2002 at the Rosewood Care Center in Swansea, Ill.
Dr. Mathis was born May 23, 1906 in Mounds City, Ill., the son of Archibald Mason and Katherine Anastasia (O'Sullivan) Mathis. Dr. Mathis graduated from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1929. He then came to Pinckneyville in 1932 where he was employed as a medical doctor at the Pinckneyville Community Hospital and was a retired Staff Member in 1976. He served as a Lt. Commander in the U.S. Navy as a test pilot during WW II. He was a member of the Epiphany Cathedral in Venice, Fla., formerly a member of St. Bruno Catholic Church in Pinckneyville and a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the AMA, Illinois State Medical society, American College of Chest Physicians, Perry County Medical Society and the Missouri Athletic Club.
Dr. Mathis was united in marriage to Elizabeth Hunter on July 20, 1977 in Sarasota, Fla and she survives. He is also survived by four sons, Jack Mathis of Mobile, Ala., Dr. Jim S. Mathis and wife Sandra of Ironton, Mo., Patrick B. Mathis and wife Rosanne of Belleville and Dr. Timothy A. Mathis and wife Connie of Pinckneyville; two daughters, Shirley Wright and husband Travis of Detroit, Tex. and Theresa Ann Eversgerd and husband Mark of Telford, Tenn.; 17 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Dr. Mathis was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services were held Saturday, August 17 at 10 a.m. at St. Bruno Catholic Church in Pinckneyville with Father John Venegoni officiating. Interment was in the St. Bruno Catholic cemetery, Pinckneyville.
Friends called at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville on Friday evening from 5 until 8 p.m. and again on Saturday morning from 8 until 9:30 a.m.
The Rosary was said Friday evening at 7:30 p.m.
