Loraine Fraley
Loraine Fraley, 76, of Tamaroa, passed away at 6:40 P.M., Saturday, August 10, 2002 at her residence.
Loraine was a homemaker and of the Pentecostal faith.
She was born December 18, 1925 at East Prairie, MO the daughter of Louis and Ruth Mae ( Schneider) Churchill.
She is survived by four sisters- Francine Mason of Norris City, Mabel Bowles of Mackinaw, IL, Barbara Carden of Du Quoin, Georgia Furlow of Tamaroa, two brothers- James J. Branam of Sesser, Anthony Branam of East Prairie, MO, several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and one sister.
Funeral services were at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, August 14, 2002 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with David Young officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 8 P.M. Tuesday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.
Interment was in the Greenwood cemetery at Mulkeytown.
Friends may make memorials to the Perry County Hospice.
Rosetta I. Ferguson
Rosetta I. Ferguson, 82, of Du Quoin, passed away at 3:25 A.M., Friday, August 30, 2002 at the Pinckneyville Health Care Center.
Rosetta was a homemaker and had worked at Du Quoin Garment Co. and as a cook at the Du Quoin Nursing Home. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Du Quoin.
She was born January 17, 1920 at Roseville, IL the daughter of Albert and Opal (Taylor) Fones.
She married
Carl E. Ferguson in 1938 at Du Quoin and he passed away in 1946. She then married
William H. Ferguson October 26, 1946 at Du Quoin and he passed away February 16, 1990.
She is survived by three sons- Jim Ferguson of Tamaroa, Kenneth Ferguson of Du Quoin and William Joseph Ferguson of Ely, Nev., three sisters- Ruth Heiman of St. Charles, IL, Mary Blythe of Swanwick, IL, Loraine Walkinghorse of Philcampbell, Alab., three brothers- Dale Fones of Rochester, NY, Richard Fones and Frank Fones both of Galesburg, IL, sister-in-law, Helen Jean Leehy of Du Quoin, tweleve grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, one great great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, two sisters- Ellen Dunn and Edna Denton, three brothers- Russell, Fritz and Albert Fones Jr.
Funeral services were at 10:30 A.M., Monday, September 2, 2002 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Rev. M. Shaw DeMent officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 8 P.M. Sunday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.
Interment was in the Old Du Quoin cemetery.

Wesley M. Schwengel
Wesley M. Schwengel, 84, of Champaign, died at 6:15 a.m. Friday, July 12, 2002 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.
A memorial service was at 2 p.m. July 20 at the First United Methodist Church in Champaign. The Rev. Donald Jackson officiated. Entombment was in Mount Hope Mausoleum in Champaign. Morgan Memorial Home in Savoy was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Schwengel retired from farming in 1976, wa a township supervisor, served on the Champaign County Board for 20 years- eight years as county board chairman and 12 years as the county board highway chairman.
Mr. Schwengel is survived by his wife, Mary Emily Schwengel; three sons and daughters-in-law, Phillip W. and Sharon Schwengel of Champaign, Marc S. and Yvonne Schwengel of Mount Vernon and Jon D. and Ann Schwengel of DuQuoin; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Beulah Ellen Hicks
Beulah Ellen Hicks, 90, of Scheller, passed away Sunday, August 25, 2002 at 1:50 a.m. at Crossroads Community Hospital in Mt. Vernon. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother.
Mrs. Hicks was born September 30, 1911 at Waltonville, the daughter of Samuel and Lou Etta (Beckham) Fred. She was united in marriage to Archie Hicks and he preceded her in death.
She was a member of Oak Grove Free Will Baptist Church.
Surviving are children, Delmar and Marilyn Hicks of Tamaroa, Jesse Franklin and Betty Hicks of Steeleville, William Hicks of Scheller, Ronnie Hicks of Scheller, Janet and Bill Kesler of Christopher and Karen Winget of Scheller; 21 grandchildren; several great- and great-great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Lois Fred of Sesser; cousin, Mary Fred and a dear friend, Leida Downen.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers, one sister, one grandson and one great-granddaughter.
Funeral services were Wednesday, August 28 at 2 p.m. at Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home in Sesser with Rev. Bud Porter officiating. Interment was in Maple Hill cemetery in Sesser.
Friends called after 6 p.m. on Tuesday, August 26 at Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home in Sesser.
Geraldine Estella Ehrmann
Geraldine Estella Ehrmann, 82, of Flora, passed away Thursday, August 1, 2002 at 7:50 a.m. at Flora Healthcare Center.
Mrs. Ehrmann and her husband had owned and operated the Ben Franklin Store in DuQuoin. She enjoyed golfing and being with her grandchildren. Mrs. Ehrmann was of the Methodist faith.
She was born May 15, 1920 at Sadorus, Ill., the daughter of John and Nellie (Tracy) Christman. She married
Elmer J. Ehrmann on April 7, 1974 at DuQuoin.
Surviving are her husband, Elmer of Flora; one son, Joel Overmyer and wife Kathy of Carterville; one daughter, Jan Schafer of Flora; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and five sisters.
Private funeral services were held on Saturday at Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora with Pastor Tim Hahn officiating. Interment was in Elmwood cemetery in Flora.

Ricky W. Porter
Ricky W. Porter, 51, of DuQuoin, passed away at 9:12 a.m. Thursday, July 18, 2002 at the Hub Motel in DuQuoin.
Ricky was a driver for Cavins Transport Co. He was of the Protestant faith.
Ricky was born June 28, 1951 at DuQuoin, the son of Alvin George and Ann (Mozi) Porter.
He is survived by two sons, Thad Conner of Pinckneyville and Justin Porter of Arkansas; two grandchildren, J.D. and Kayla Conner; three nephews, Travis and Dirk Porter and Bart Bishop and several aunts and uncles.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother- Gary Porter and sister- Connie Bishop.
Graveside memorial services were at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 21 at the Elkville cemetery.
The Searby Funeral Home of DuQuoin was in charge of arrangements.
Those attending services were asked to go directly to the cemetery.
Interment was in the Elkville cemetery.
Opal L. Hubler
Opal L. Hubler, 81, of Pinckneyville, passed away Monday morning, July 22, 2002 at the Pinckneyville Community Hospital.
Opal was born December 7, 1920 in Pinckneyville, the daughter of Henry and Jane (Cheek) Davis. She was united in marriage to Waldo G. Owen and he preceded her in death in 1944. She was then united in marriage to Stanley C. Hubler Sr. and he also preceded her in death in 1957. Opal was a member of Roe's Dale Baptist Church in Pinckneyville, a homemaker and a lifelong resident of Pinckneyville.
Opal is survived by three sons, Brad Owen and wife Betty of Pinckneyville, Gene Owen and wife Paula of Steeleville and Stanley Hubler and wife Julie of Pinckneyville; six daughters, Darlene Sero and husband Marvin of Duluth, Minn., Marlene Dinges of Baldwin, Carolyn Wilson and husband Robert of Sparta, Sandy Oyler and husband Donald of Pinckneyville, Linda DeSpain and husband Roy of Coultervillle and Opal June Hubler of Pinckneyville; 21 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; a brother, Lee Davis and three sisters, Sophie McClurken, Mabel Owens and Wilma Udarholt.
Funeral Services were held Wednesday, July 24 at 1 p.m. at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville with Reverend J.O. Mathenia officiating. Interment was in the Mueller Hill cemetery in Pinckneyville.
Friends called at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home Tuesday evening from 6 until 9 p.m. and again on Wednesday from 8 a.m. until services.

Edward William Hirsch
Edward William Hirsch, 91, of Lompoc, California, died Thursday, July 18, 2002 at the Lompoc Convalescent Care Center.
Ed was born March 27, 1911 to Louis and Bertha Hirsch in their home in DuQuoin, Illinois where he was raised with his six siblings. A brother, Johnnie, died at 14 months and a sister, Minnie, died at the age of six years. Ed was also preceded in death by the eldest brother, Herman, and the youngest brother, Al.
In 1935, he married
Wanda Galbraith of Tamaroa. They were married
in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Following their marriage they lived in Illinois and Washington- where they had their one child, Diana, and then returned to New Mexico where they resided for 23 years. While in New Mexico, Ed owned and operated a retail grocery store with his wife and brother-in-law. Every summer Ed and his family would return to DuQuoin to visit his family and many friends there. The Hirsch Reunion was always a special event for Ed and his family.
In 1971, Ed and Wanda moved to Lompoc to be near their daughter, Diana Scarborough and her family. Ed was well-known to customers of Winston's Valley Pedaler, a local Schwinn bicycle shop located on West Ocean Avenue where he worked until his retirement.
Ed resided in his home with his wife of 67 years until June 2001 when he went to live in the Lompoc Convalescent Care Center. During his stay at the CCC, he enjoyed many activities such as Bingo, various card games, dominoes, the Elk's Friday fish lunches and the various churches who came to the center for Sunday afternoon worship services.
Ed is survived by his wife- Wanda, daughter-Diana, three grandchildren- Damon Scarborough of Texas, Denise Scarborough of Oklahoma and Daron Scarborough of Hawaii, a brother- Louis Hirsch of Michigan, a brother- Clifford Hirsch of Illinois and many other special members of his family.
A memorial service was held at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, August 2 in the chapel of Starbuck-Lind Mortuary with Pastor Jerry Morris of Trinity Church of the Nazarene officiating. A gathering for family and friends was held following the service at the Lompoc Valley Community Center. Ed's brother, Louis and his wife, Jo, accompanied his ashes to DuQuoin where a graveside service was held at the IOOF cemetery and his ashes buried in the family plot.

Hildegard Victoria Poe
Hildegard Victoria Poe, age 86, of Pinckneyville, died at her home on Saturday, July 27, 2002 at 9:06 p.m.
Hildegard was born in Pinckneyville on June 3, 1916, the daughter of Jacob and Theresa (Hoffman) Epplin. She married
Clifford L. Poe on January 3, 1942 in St. Bruno Catholic Church in Pinckneyville and he preceded her in death on March 2, 2000. Before her marriage to Clifford, she worked at the Perry County Courthouse and later worked with her husband as an office manager for Pinckneyville Plumbing & Heating. She was a member of the St. Bruno Catholic Church in Pinckneyville and enjoyed making quilts for her family and the church.
Survivors include three daughters, Angela DeLoach of Warner Robins, Ga., Marilyn Craig and husband Minor of Coulterville and Janet Hampton and husband John of Grafton; five sons, Roger Poe and wife Betsey of Alpharetta, Ga., George Poe and wife Nancy of Mount Morris, Donald Poe and wife Bilin of Duluth, Minn., Bruce Poe and wife Beth of Hamilton, Mich. and Mike Poe and wife Carol of Pinckneyville; three sisters, Christina Elkins of Pinckneyville, Florence Eisfelder of Pinckneyville and Marcella Fontana of DuQuoin; 26 grandchildren and four great-grandsons.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; a granddaughter, Sharon Craig; a son-in-law, Bob DeLoach and three brothers, Herman Epplin, John Epplin and Jacob Epplin.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, July 30 in the St. Bruno Catholic Church in Pinckneyville at 11 a.m. with Father John Venegoni officiating. Interment was in the St. Bruno Catholic cemetery in Pinckneyville.
Visitation was held at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville on Monday, July 29 from 5 until 9 p.m. and on Tuesday, July 30 from 8 until 10:30 a.m. The Rosary was said on Tuesday morning at 10 a.m.
Memorials will be made to the St. Bruno School Endowment Fund or Hospice of Perry County/Hospital Home Care.
Menzo John Morse
Menzo John Morse Jr., 65, of Dowell, passed away Thursday, July 4, 2002 at 11:59 p.m. at his home.
Mr. Morse had been a coal miner. He was a member of American Legion Post 647, Masonic Lodge 192 of Farmington, Ainad Temple of Southern Illinois and the Moose Lodge of Charlston, West Virginia. He was a military veteran.
He was born October 28, 1936 at Maquon, the son of Menzo J. Morse Sr. and Evelyn (Lovell) Morse. He married
Becky Smith on February 23, 1982 at Las Vegas, Nevada. He had lived in Dowell for the past 14 years.
Surviving are his wife, Becky Morse of Dowell; son, David (Diane) Morse of Dunbar, West Virginia; daughter, Lisa (Josh) Ellingson of Morton; step-daughters, Regina Hollenback and Jodi (Brandon) Abernathy, both of Table Grove; sisters, Stella Heston of Washington State, Connie McVey of Glassford, Linda Utsinger of Ellisville and Joyce McNeil of Farmington; brother, Bill Morse of Varna; mother and father-in-law, Donna and Gary Swingfert of Farmington, Charles and Verna Smith of McComb; several nieces and nephews and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.
Funeral services were Monday, July 8 at 10 a.m. at Maxton Funeral Chapel. Interment was in Old DuQuoin cemetery.
Masonic Rites were held at 10 a.m. Monday. The American Legion provided graveside services.
There was no visitation.

Betty Ann Johnston
Betty Ann Johnston, age 71, of Pinckneyville, passed away suddenly Tuesday afternoon, July 16, 2002 at the Marshall Browning Hospital in DuQuoin.
Betty was born June 27, 1931 in Henderson, Ky., the daughter of Reverend Ora and Lola (Stone) Evans. She was united in marriage October 30, 1948 in Henderson, Ky. to Reverend Don Johnston and he survives. Betty was a Pastor's wife of 54 years in Kentucky, Hileah, Fla., Caseyville and Pinckneyville. She was a homemaker, mother and grandmother. She was a member of Grace Outreach Church in Pinckneyville and a missionary to Haiti for 29 years.
Betty is survived by her husband, Reverend Don Johnston; five sons, John Johnston and wife Sherry of Georgia, Ron Johnston and wife Karen of Oklahoma, Keith Johnston and wife Lou of Indiana, Deon Johnston and wife Barb of Pinckneyville and Tim Johnston and wife Patti of Michigan; one daughter, Candy Steele and husband Reverend Kirk of Pinckneyville; 14 grandchildren, Lori Ann Johnston, Jenifer Smoker and husband Mike, Jeremy Johnston and wife Jessica, Joshua Johnston, Andrew Johnston, Holly Johnston, Amber Johnston, Kenton Steele, Beth Ann Steele, Nicholas Johnston, Hillary Johnston, Katie Steele, Taylor Rose Johnston and Haley Johnston; great-grandson, Michael Patrick Smoker and two special boys, Luis and Fabien; one brother, Ora 'Sonny' Evans and wife Linda of Ocala, Fla; one sister, Barbara Belcher and husband Jim of Owensboro, Ky. and many nieces and nephews. Betty was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services were planned for Saturday, July 20 at 10 a.m. at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville with Reverends Bob Williams, Ted Johnston, Hal Santos, Willard Clements and Kirk H. Steele officiating. Interment was in the Galum Presbyterian cemetery in Pinckneyville.
Friends called at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville Friday evening from 5 until 9 p.m. and again on the day of services from 8 until 10 a.m.
Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to the Burial Fund of Betty Johnston.
Charles Richard Grills
Charles Richard 'Dick' Grills, born March 18, 1913 in DuQuoin, passed away on Friday, July 12, 2002 at the Motion Picture and TV Fund Hospital in Woodland Hills, California. He is survived by his brother, Raymond Grills of Sarasota, Florida and several nieces and nephews. Dick attended schools in DuQuoin. After graduation from Monmouth College in Monmouth, IL, Dick went to Los Angeles, California where he met and married
Lucille Marie Morris, who passed away in 1979.
In 1937, Dick went to work for The Walt Disney Company in Burbank, California in the Cartoon Camera Department, where he worked on many of Disney's most memorable animated features. Dick was part of the original crew that operated the newly invented multiplane camera that gave depth to animated films. He retired in 1979 as head of the Camera Department.
Dick loved to travel and there are few ports of call that you might mention that Dick and Lucille hadn't visited. Dick was a great sports fan and even though he moved west, he remained a staunch St. Louis Cardinal fan. He loved to hunt and looked forward to his annual trek to Wyoming to hunt elk and sheep and to Missouri and Illinois to hunt wild turkey, ducks and pheasants with his boyhood buddies.
During World War II, Dick was in the Navy where he served in the area of 'aerial reconnaissance'.
Dick was buried with his wife, Lucille, in Versailles, Missouri. They had no children. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a favorite charity.
