Herbert Dwight Hitt
Herbert Dwight Hitt, 78, of Benton, a loving husband, father, and grandpa, passed away at 2:00 P.M., Thursday, October 24, 2002 at the Herrin Hospital.

Dwight was a retired mine manager having worked for Freeman Coal Company and Peabody Coal Company.

He was of the protestant faith. He was a 32 degree Mason and was a member of the Freeburg Masonic Lodge. He was also a member of the United Mine Workers of America.

He was born February 3, 1924 in Perry County, IL the son of John and Beulah (Hamilton) Hitt.

He married Ora Jean Moore on July 10, 1946 at Morganfield, Kentucky.

He is survived by his wife Ora Jean Hitt of Benton, children- Brenda Crabtree and husband Bob of St.Louis, MO, Peggy Hall and husband Jerry of Benton, Dwight Dean Hitt and wife Rita of Mulkeytown and Lisa Sabo and husband Raymond of Benton, sister- Sharon Hubbard and husband Jiles of Tamaroa, thirteen grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers- Marion Guy and Bob Hitt.

Private family services were held Monday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin, with Rev. Claude Hampleman officiating.

Friends called on the Herbert Dwight Hitt family on Monday, October 28, 2002 from 1 to 3 P.M. at the Greenwood United Methodist Church at Mulkeytown.

Lillian G. Aken
Lillian G. Aken, 84, of Elkville, passed away at 10:40 A.M., Monday, October 14, 2002 at the Jackson County Rehab Center in Murphysboro.

Lillian was a retired beautician and homemaker. She was a member of Elkville Christian Church, Eastern Star, and Ladies Quilters of the Church.

She was born March 30, 1918 at Tunnel Hill, IL, the daughter of Robert Raymond and Ruby (Boner) Cavitt.

She married Bert Aken on February 15, 1937 at Jackson County, IL and he preceded her in death in October 1987.

She is survived by two sons - Jerry Aken and wife Faye of Elkville, IL and Larry Aken and wife Sarah of Murphysboro, IL, brother - Robert Cavitt of Mattoon, six grandchildren - Steven Aken, Tom Aken, Andrew Aken & wife Kim, Maureen Gillardi & husband John, Amanda Mynatt & husband Ken, and Beth Alongi & husband Guy, nine great-granchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and one sister - Delores Pennell.

Funeral services were at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, October 16, 2002 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Bro. Gary Pruitt officiating.

Friends called from 5 to 8 P.M., Tuesday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.

Interment was in the Elkville cemetery.

Friends may make memorials to Elkville Christian Church Building Fund or Jackson County Rehab Center.

Aurelia C. Barnes
Aurelia C. Barnes, nee Mueller, 91, of Pinckneyville, formerly of Belleville and Oakdale, passed away Tuesday, October 22, 2002 at Pinckneyville Community Hospital.

Mrs. Barnes was born November 17, 1920 in Belleville, the daughter of Henry and Whileminia (Forcade) Mueller. She married Lester Barnes on September 1, 1929 and he preceded her in death on September 22, 1993.

She was a homemaker and a member of Home Extension in Washington County.

Surviving are a son, Robert (Eileen) Barnes of Swansea; a daughter, Jeanette (Jack) Carlson of Pinckneyville; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers and a sister.

Funeral services were held at 12 p.m. Friday, October 25 at Pete Gaerdner Funeral Home in Belleville with Rev. Jim Barnett officiating. Burial was in Lake View Memorial Gardens at Fairview Heights.

Friends called from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Friday at Pete Gaerdner Funeral Home in Belleville.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Bonita Dasher
Bonita Dasher, 63, of Du Quoin, passed away at 4:00 A.M., Saturday, October 26, 2002 at the home of her daughter.

Bonita had been at cook at the Perfection Club for fifteen years and had worked at Blazon and Essex. She was a Baptist.

She was born December 7, 1938 at Du Quoin, IL the daughter of Louis and Opal (Craig) Russell.

She married Donald Lee Dasher on May 28, 1964 at Rolla, MO and he survives.

She is survived by her husband of Du Quoin, mother- Opal Vaughn of Elkville, children- Henrietta Melvin of Du Quoin, Herschel Fisher, Mike Fisher, Robbie Fisher and John Fisher all of Chicago, Randy Fisher of San Diego, CA, Donald Dasher Jr. of Pinckneyville, step son- John Lee Dasher of Alabama, two brothers- Louis Donald Russell of Mississippi, Leo Russell of Du Quoin, sister- Damon Ledford of Georgia, nineteen grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Graveside services were at 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, October 29, 2002 at the Old Du Quoin cemetery with Rev. C.L. McKinnies officiating.

Friends called from 9 A.M. until time of service at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.

Interment was in the Old Du Quoin cemetery.

Friends may make memorials to the Hospice of Southern Illinois.

Raymond E. Jankowski
Mr. Raymond E. Jankowski, of DuBois, departed this life at St. Mary's Health Care Center in Richmond Heights, Mo. on Wednesday, October 30, 2002 at 4:45 a.m. He was 67.

Mr. Jankowski was born at Radom on August 30, 1935, the son of John and Ruby (Taylor) Jankowski. He was united in marriage to JoAnn Janowksi at Perryville, Mo. on May 4, 1955 and she preceded him in death on June 5, 1986. On June 22, 1987, he was united in marriage to Mary R. Epperheimer at Perryville, Mo. and she survives.

Raymond was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church at DuBois and was a retired Iron Worker, having been employed by Turco Manufacturing of DuQuoin. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and Polka dancing.

Left to mourn his passing are his wife, Mary Jankowksi of DuBois; his father, John Jankowski of Radom; six children, Debra Skortz of Nashville, Sandra Colle and husband David of Mt. Vernon, Ricky J. Jankowski and wife Donna of Damiansville, Linda Henken of Kimmundy, Jacqueline Barton and husband Steve of Nashville and Kelley Ross and husband LeeLand of Collinsville; three step-children, Margaret Scholebo and husband David and Patricia Scholebo and husband Jeff, all of Pinckneyville and Laura Smith of DuBois; a brother, David Jankowski and wife Eva of Union, Mo.; two sisters, Jeanette Richards and husband Dale of Germantown, Tenn. and Caroline Barnes and husband Don of Conway, Ark.; 18 grandchildren; 14 step-grandchildren; one great-granddaughter, nieces, nephews, other relations and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Ruby Jankowski; a son, Russell Jankowski and a brother, Terry Jankowski.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in St. Charles Catholic Church at DuBois on Saturday, November 2 at 10 a.m. with Msgr. Melvin Vandeloo officiating and with interment at St. Michael's cemetery at Radom.

Friends called at the Campagna Funeral Home at Ashley on Friday, November 1 from 5 until 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m.

The Rosary was said at the Campagna Funeral Home on Friday at 8 p.m.

Should friends desire, mass offerings or memorial contributions to the American Diabetes Association may be made.

Ella Aline Kelley
Ella Aline Kelley, 77, of Eldorado, passed away at 2:30 a.m. Saturday, October 5, 2002 at her residence.

Mrs. Kelley was born September 8, 1925 in DuQuoin, the daughter of Dewey Carrington Kelley and Louvenia Chloe Mattson. She married Robert Carl Kelley Jr. on September 8, 1969 and he preceded her in death on March 2, 1994.

She was a member of Eldorado Gospel Assembly Church, Eldorado Golden Circle, the Retail Clerk's Association and AARP.

Surviving are her son, Gregory Kelley of Eldorado; two sisters, Helen J. Kelley of DuQuoin and Ulla Gertrude (Kelley) Rabe of Pinckneyville and one granddaughter, Rebecca Ruth (Kelley) Fournier of Atlanta, Ga.

Funeral services were Monday, October 7 at 2 p.m. at Gospel Assembly Church with Rev. DeWayne Jolly officiating. Interment was in Wolf Creek cemetery in Eldorado.

Friends called Monday from 9 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. at Watson Funeral Home in Eldorado.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or VNA Hospice.

Shirley A. Degenhardt
Shirley A. Degenhardt, 67, of Du Quoin, passed away at 8:22 A.M., Thursday, October 3, 2002 at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro.

Shirley was a homemaker and managed Degenhardt Paint Store for several years. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Du Quoin, Du Quoin Public Library Board Member for several years, and a member of the Perry County Historical Society and A-WA-WE-GO Campers..

She was born March 24, 1935 at St. Johns, IL, the daughter of Fred A. and Alma V. (Scarborough) Knight.

She married Derrell Gene Degenhardt on May 30, 1953 at the First Christian Church in Du Quoin and he survives.

She is survived by her husband of Du Quoin, two daughters - Diana Riley of Cotter, AR and Cathryn Wunder of Apalachin, NY, one son - Stephen Degenhardt of South Easton, MA, one brother - Sidney Fred Knight of Bourbonnais, IL, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services were at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, October 5, 2002 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Rev. Carl Mesiti officiating.

Friends called from 5 to 8 P.M., Friday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.

Interment was in the Sunset Memorial Park at Du Quoin.

Friends may make memorials to the American Cancer Society.

Rev. James O. Mathenia
Rev. James O. Mathenia, age 80, of Pinckneyville, died on Monday, October 14, 2002 in the St. Mary's Hospital in St. Louis, Mo. at 3:55 p.m.

Rev. Mathenia was born on January 1, 1922 in Steele, Mo., the son of James I. and Melvina E. (Wright) Mathenia. He married Ruth A. Haggard on April 30, 1941 in Caruthersville, Mo. J.O. was a graduate of the former Southern Illinois College of Bible in Carbondale. He served as a minister in numerous churches throughout Illinois and was still currently preaching in area churches. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II and a member of the Winkle Baptist Church. J.O. was a devoted husband and father.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth of Pinckneyville; three sons, James Mathenia and wife Toni of Freeport, Robert Mathenia of Pinckneyville and Paul Mathenia and wife Stephanie of Red Bud; three brothers, Leo Mathenia of Flint, Mich., Harold Mathenia of Steele, Mo. and Alvin Mathenia of Flint, Mich.; three sisters, Bernice Lewis of Wappapello, Mo., Earline Williams of Steele, Mo. and Mary Hockaday of Nashville, Ark.; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Betty Hicks; two brothers, Fred Mathenia and L.H. Mathenia and a sister, Velta Vaughn.

Funeral services were held a the Winkle Baptist Church on Thursday, October 17 at 10:30 a.m. with Bro. Tim McIntyre and Bro. Karl Barnfield officiating. Interment was in the Mueller Hill cemetery in Pinckneyville.

Visitation was held at the Winkle Baptist Church on Wednesday, October 16 from 6 until 9 p.m. and on Thursday from 8 a.m. until services.

Memorials may be made to the Winkle Baptist Church.

Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home of Pinckneyville was in charge of arrangements.

Richard J. Galbraith
Richard J. (Red) Galbraith, 74, of Tamaroa, passed away at 12:20 P.M., Thursday, October 3, 2002 at Pinckneyville Community Hospital.

Richard was a crane operator for Western Electric for 37 years. He was a member of Du Quoin American Legion and Du Quoin VFW. He was of the Baptist faith. He was a U.S. Army veteran of W.W. II.

He was born June 9, 1928 at Tamaroa, IL, the son of Christopher (Toot) and Rachel (Rice) Galbraith.

He married Josephine Ruby Elder on December 8, 1952 at Du Quoin, IL and she preceded him in death.

He is survived by two daughters - Pamela Runnels of Tamaroa and Vickie Aguirre of Chicago, two sisters - Maxine Huite of Du Quoin, Lola Mae Askew of Tamaroa, one brother - Larry Galbraith of Tamaroa, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and one sister - Pauline Davis.

Funeral services were at 1:30 P.M., Sunday, October 6, 2002 at Searby Funeral Home in Tamaroa with Bro. Arven Kirkpatrick officiating.

Military Graveside Rites were conducted by Du Quoin VFW Post 513.

Friends called from 5 to 8 P.M. Saturday at the Searby Funeral Home in Tamaroa.

Interment was in the Sunset Memorial Park at Du Quoin.

James C. Jones
James C. Jones, 80, of Mulkeytown, passed away Thursday, October 3, 2002 at 3:30 a.m. in the V.A. Medical Center in Marion.

Mr. Jones worked at DuQuoin Iron Supply for 42 years before retiring.

He was born March 19, 1922 in Mulkeytown, the son of Arnold and Clara (Dreibilis) Jones. He married Gladys Watson and she preceded him in death on December 15, 1995.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of W.W. II and a member of the VFW in DuQuoin and American Legion of Christopher.

Surviving are three sons, Cecil Jones of DuQuoin, Charles Jones of Bellevue, Neb. and Jim Jones of Mulkeytown; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Jessie Reid of Christopher and sister-in-law, Jerry Jones of DuQuoin.

Funeral services were held Saturday, October 5 at 2 p.m. at Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher with Rev. John Lewis officiating. Interment was in Mulkeytown cemetery.

Friends called at Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher on Friday, October 4 after 6 p.m.

Ardis Linelle Morgan
Ardis Linelle Morgan, 50, of DuQuoin, passed away at 12:18 a.m. Tuesday, October 15, 2002 at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

Ms. Morgan was a homemaker. She was born March 11, 1952 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the daughter of James and Ardis (Turner) Curd.

Surviving are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Curd of North Glenn, Colorado; son, Luke Murray of Carbondale; daughter, Jessica Morgan of Carbondale and a sister, Mindy Scloneker of Joplin, Mo.

Funeral services were Friday, October 18 at 1 p.m. at Neal-McClure Memorial Chapel with Rev. Max Voyles officiating.

Friends called at the funeral home from 11 a.m. until time of services Friday.
