Gary W. Glenzy
Gary W. 'Bear' Glenzy, age 63, of Pinckneyville, IL, formerly of Chaffee, MO, died unexpectedly on Sunday, January 26, 2003 at 9:12 a.m. in the Pinckneyville Community Hospital Emergency Room.
Gary was born in Chaffee, MO, January 15, 1940 the son of John and Lela (Carter) Glenzy. Gary was a member of the All Conference Football Team in High School, and a graduate of Southeast Missouri University. He was scouted by the St. Louis Cardinal Baseball Team. He was united in marriage to Rosemary Greer in Chaffee, MO on August 18, 1962 and she survives.
Gary was a member of St. Bruno Catholic Church in Pinckneyville, IL.
Gary had retired as the Panther Athletic Director, volleyball coach and girl's basketball coach and teacher from the Pinckneyville Community High School in 2001. Gary coached football at Pinckneyville High School for 21 years, retiring in 1990. He started the Panther Wrestling program in the mid 1970s and was the program's first wrestling coach. Gary was one of the founders of the Southern Illinois Coal Bowl Allstar Football Game. He was elected to the Illinois Coaches Hall of Fame in 1990. Gary was a past president of the Southern Illinois Coaches Association. He was also honored by the Southern Illinois Coaches Association with the Emeritus Coach Award in 2001.Gary was voted Illinois Athletic Director of the Year, 1988-89.
Gary is survived by his wife Rosemary of Pinckneyville, IL, one daughter, Genea Pixler and husband Rob of Lexington, KY, four brothers; Danny Glenzy and wife Jan of St. Louis, MO, Michael Campbell of Springfield, MO, Bill Campbell of Jefferson City, MO, and Bruce Glenzy of Kansas City, MO, one sister, Nancy Campbell of Springfield, MO, brothers-in-law, Nelson and Frank Greer and their wives, Carolyn and Kay from Tucson, AZ, two sisters-in-law, LaVerne Keller and husband Bud of Austin, TX and Judy Greer of Kansas City, MO, a cousin, Terry Glenzy and wife Pat of Chaffee, MO, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and mother-in-law.
Funeral services were held Thursday morning at 11:00 a.m., January 30, 2003 at the St. Bruno Catholic Church in Pinckneyville, IL with Father John Venegoni officiating. Interment was in the Mueller Hill cemetery in Pinckneyville, IL.
Visitation was held at the St. Bruno Catholic Church in Pinckneyville, IL Wednesday evening from 5:30 p.m. till 9:00 p.m. The public was also invited to attend a Prayer Vigil on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. prior to the visitation.
There was no public visitation on Thursday morning

Virginia M. Smith
Virginia M. Smith, of Pinckneyville, IL died in the Pinckneyville Community Hospital on Wednesday, January 22, 2003 at 6:05 p.m.
Virginia was born in Pinckneyville, IL, the daughter of Henry Scott Smith and Mary Ann (Eydman) Smith. She was a member of the Matthews Baptist Church and worked as a custodian for the Perry County Sherriff's Department.
Survivors include a daughter, Jennifer Joslin and husband Jim of Pinckneyville, IL, one grandson, Jim Joslin, Jr. and wife Dorothy of Island Lake, IL and their four children, Amber, Alexander, Amanda, and Alisia, a niece, Shirley Prichett and a nephew, Bill Smith and his wife Marilyn all of Pinckneyville, IL.
She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers, William R. Smith and Harold Smith and a sister, Dorothy Smith.
Funeral services were at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville, IL Saturday morning, January 25, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Charles Smith officiating. Interment was in the Mueller Hill cemetery in Pinckneyville, IL.
Friends called at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home on Friday evening from 6:00 p.m. till 9:00 p.m. then on Saturday morning from 8:00 a.m. till services.

F. Ruth Hickem
F. Ruth Hickem, 79, of Du Quoin, passed away at 11:30 P.M., Thursday, January 23, 2003 at St. Louis University Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri.
Ruth was a homemaker. She had worked at B&B; Shoe Store, A & P, and Greens IGA. She was a member of Old Du Quoin Baptist Church, an active member of American Legion Auxiliary, Eastern Star and Egyptian Past Presidents Club.
She was born March 12, 1923 at St. Johns, IL, the daughter of Fred and Ruth (Baxter) Hartley.
She married
Paul E. Hickem on August 21, 1942 at Cape Girardeau, MO and he preceded her in death on April 9, 2000.
She is survived by one son - Fred P. Hickem of Du Quoin, one daughter - Elaine Silbe and husband Jim of Pinckneyville, three grandchildren - Stacey Harsy and husband David, Brett Silbe and wife LaDonna, and Jason Silbe and four great grandchildren - Melaina Harsy, Caleb, Matilyn, and Luke Silbe.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother and one sister.
Funeral services were at 2:00 P.M., Monday, January 27, 2003 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Rev. Ted Clark officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 8 P.M., Sunday, January 26, 2003 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.
Interment was in the I.O.O.F. cemetery at Du Quoin.

Lisetta R. Hepp
Lisetta R. Hepp, age 90, of Pinckneyville, IL died on Thursday, January 2, 2003 in the Pinckneyville Community Hospital Skilled Care Unit at 7:12 a.m.
Lisetta was born in Perry County, IL on April 1, 1912 the daughter of Martin and Caroline (Paasch) Mayer. She married
Scott R. Hepp on December 3, 1928 in Chester, IL and he preceded her in death on February 8, 1984. Lisetta was a member of the First Baptist Church in Pinckneyville, IL, worked at the former Forest City Garment Factory, Pinckneyville, a member of the Pinckneyville Senior Citizen's, and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program.
Survivors include one son, Martin Hepp and wife Imogene of Pinckneyville, IL three grandchildren: Doug Hepp, and his wife, Brenda, David Hepp, and his wife, Cindy, and Laurie Leonard, all of Pinckneyville, seven great-grandchildren: Megan, Lindsey, Noah, Aaron, and Taylor Hepp, Tanon and Treyton Leonard, along with several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded death by her parents, husband, 3 sisters, Ernestine Rabe, Onita Hoffman, and Emily Schwarz and 2 stepsons, Harlan Hepp and Robert Hepp and one grandson.
Funeral services were held 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 5, 2003 in the First Baptist Church, Pinckneyville, IL with Rev. Mike Higgerson officiating. Interment was in the Mueller Hill cemetery in Pinckneyville, IL.
Visitation was held at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville, IL on January 4, 2003 from 6:00 p.m. till 9:00 p.m. and on Sunday, January 5, 2003 from 8:00 a.m. till 12:30 p.m. then at the church from 1:00 p.m. till services

Larry G. Goodwin
Larry G. Goodwin, Sr., 64, of Du Quoin, passed away at 3:45 A.M., Monday, January 27, 2003 at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.
Larry worked as a salesman for Chip Banks Chevrolet for five years. He had also worked for Arch Coal Company.
He was born April 24, 1938 at Du Quoin, the son of Courtlin and Fleta (Bailey) Goodwin.
He married
Karen J. Moody on November 9, 1957 at Du Quoin and she survives.
He is survived by his wife of Du Quoin, one son - Larry G. Goodwin, Jr. and wife Kristy of Du Quoin, one daughter - Laurie Kellerman and husband James of Du Quoin, three grandchildren - Ryan Goodwin, Courtney Kellerman, and Paige Kellerman, one great grandson - Cole Allen Goodwin, and his mother - Fleta Bailey Goodwin Eubanks of Du Quoin.
He was preceded in death by his father and two brothers - Dennis and Charles.
Funeral services were at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, January 29, 2003 at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Du Quoin with Rev. John E. Johnson officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 8 P.M., Tuesday at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Du Quoin.
Interment was in the Sunset Memorial Park at Du Quoin.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethel Lutheran Church Building Fund or Marshall Browning Hospital Capital Campaign.

Lucy M. Scarlett
Lucy M. Scarlett, 91, of Du Quoin, passed away at 2:12 a.m. Thursday, January 2, 2003 at Marshall Browning Hospital.
Mrs. Scarlett was a member of First United Methodist Church in Du Quoin for 80 years. She was a member of the Crusaders and had been a Counter Clerk at a drug store.
She was born March 17, 1911 at Du Quoin, the daughter of Edward and Maude (Hill) Harriss. She married
William A. Scarlett on July 27, 1933 at Mt. Vernon and he preceded her in death on August 1, 1972.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Tootie and Bob Keeler of Du Quoin; two granddaughters, Cindy Broha and husband Jim of Pinckneyville and Jenylle Showalter of Du Quoin; a great-grandson, Kline Peradotta and a step-great-granddaughter, Amber Broha.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one infant son, two brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services were Saturday, January 4 at 11 a.m. at Neal-McClure Memorial Chapel with Rev. Carl Mesiti officiating. Interment was in the IOOF cemetery at Du Quoin.
Friends called on Saturday from 9 a.m. until time of services at Neal-McClure Funeral Home in Du Quoin.

Leo Sroka
Leo Sroka, age 83, of Pinckneyville, IL, passed away unexpectedly at his home Tuesday afternoon, February 18, 2003 at 12:31 p.m..
Leo was born in Pinckneyville, IL, February 18, 1920 the son of Leon and Helen (Filipski) Sroka. He was a veteran of WWII and worked with the U.S. Postal Service as a postal carrier. Leo was a member of the St. Bruno Catholic Church in Pinckneyville, IL, member of the V.F.W. of Sparta, IL, member of the Knights of Columbus in Pinckneyville, IL, and loved farming and fishing.
Leo is survived by three sons; Donald J. Sroka of Pinckneyville, IL, Gerald Sroka and wife Valarie of Belleville, IL, Mark Sroka and wife Janie of Pinckneyville, IL, one brother, Joe Sroka of Pinckneyville, IL, eight grandchildren, two great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and a special friend, Jeanetta Krug.
Leo was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Andrew and John, five sisters: Theresa Rozycke, Gertie Geistdoerfer, Frances Simpson, Maggie Brand, and Clementine Sroka in childhood, and two infant brothers.
Funeral services will be held Friday morning, February 21, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Bruno Catholic Church in Pinckneyville, IL with Father James Van Oss officiating. Interment will be in the St. Bruno Catholic cemetery, Pinckneyville, IL.

Albert J. 'Ab' Miller
Albert J. 'Ab' Miller, age 89, of Pinckneyville, IL, passed away Thursday morning, February 27, 2003 at the Fair Acres Nursing Home, DuQuoin, IL at 7:55 a.m.
Ab was born April 9, 1914, in rural Pinckneyville, IL the son of Louis J. and Rose (Schmidt) Miller. He was a member of the St. Bruno Catholic Church in Pinckneyville, IL, a charter member of the Knights of Columbus in Pinckneyville, IL. and was a member of the Perry County Farm Bureau.
Ab is survived by a sister-in-law, Catherine Miller of DuQuoin, IL, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends in the Pyatt Community of Perry County.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters, Clara Hottes and Emma Ford, and two brothers, Frank E. Miller and Louis J. Miller.
Funeral services will be held Saturday morning, March 1, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Bruno Catholic Church in Pinckneyville, IL with Msgr. Tom Miller officiating. Interment will be in the St. Bruno Catholic cemetery, Pinckneyville, IL.

Marie L. Warren
Marie L. Warren, 82, of Elkville, passed away at 2:00 A.M., Monday, December 23, 2002 at Fairview Nursing Center in Du Quoin.
Marie was a homemaker and a member of Elkville United Methodist Church. She was secretary and treasurer of the church for many years. She was also a Sunday School teacher, a member of the Home Extension, and a Trustee of Rick Warren Memorial Library Board.
She was born July 15, 1920 at Devonshire, England, the daughter of James and Emily (Mee) Clipson.
She married
Perry C. Warren on May 24, 1944 at Kattering, England and he survives.
She is survived by her husband of Elkville and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one son - Richard C. Warren on July 1, 1964.
Funeral services were at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, December 26, 2002 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Rev. James Barnett officiating.
Friends called from 10 to 11 A.M., Thursday at the Searby Funeral Home.
Interment was in the White County Memorial Gardens at Carmi, Illinois.

Howard D. Vancil
Howard D. Vancil, 69, of Du Quoin, passed away at 9:17 A.M., Wednesday, December 11, 2002 at St. Louis University Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri.
Howard was a retired dragline operator for the coal mines and had worked at Consol #2 mine. He was a member of Sunfield Methodist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of Du Quoin VFW Post 513 and UMW of A Local 9721.
He was born February 9, 1933 at Du Quoin, IL, the son of Miles and Annabell (Bailey) Vancil.
He married
Nellie Cook on February 23, 1957 at Sunfield, IL and she survives.
He is survived by his wife of Du Quoin, one daughter - Linda Denton and husband Roger of Pinckneyville, two sons - Joey Vancil and wife Stacey of Du Quoin and Leslie Vancil and wife Susan of Pinckneyville, two brothers - Sam Vancil and wife Elaine of DuQuoin and Bill Vancil and wife Norma of Du Quoin, grandchildren - Megan and Will Denton, Joel and Abigail Vancil, and Justin Vancil.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Graveside services were at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, December 14, 2002 at Sunset Memorial Park with Rev. Jerry Dunn officiating. Those attending the service were asked to go directly to the cemetery.
Friends called from 5 to 8 P.M., Friday at the Searby Funeral Home in Tamaroa.
Interment was in the Sunset Memorial Park at Du Quoin.
Military rites were conducted by DuQuoin VFW Post 513.
