Imogene Stowers
Imogene Stowers, 71, of Du Quoin, passed away at 10:15 P.M. on December 18, 2002 at her home.
Imogene was born January 10, 1931 in Du Quoin, the daughter of Earl and Ethel (Coffel) Lashbrook.
Surviving are her five children - Tannya (Ralph) Shockley of Du Quoin, Phillip (Connie) Flint of Du Quoin, Cindy Harris of Sesser, Illinois, Monte (Valerie) Flint of Princeton, Indiana, and Jay Stowers of Du Quoin; ten grandchildren - Michelle (Shockley) Kinsey, Angie (Shockley) Porter, Steven Shockley, Carrie (Flint) Rendleman, Holly Flint, Bobby Harris, Shawn Harris, Desiree Flint, Seth Flint and Tyler Stowers; seven great-grandchildren - Eli Kinsey, Emma Kinsey, Levi Porter, Laynee Porter, Nolan Flint, Shaygna Harris and Kinsey Harris; two brothers - Jack (Barbara) Lashbrook of Energy, Illinois, and Paul (Alberta) Lashbrook of Macomb, Illinois; three sisters - Wilma Woodside of Du Quoin, Sharon Ping of Du Quoin, and Diane (Bruce) Cavins of Du Quoin, one brother-in-law - David Jump of Du Quoin, several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother - George Lashbrook, one sister - Janet Jump, one grandson - Shane T. Harris, one nephew - Danny Lashbrook, and one son-in-law - Bob Harris.
Funeral services were at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, December 21, 2002 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Rev. Bob Dickerson officiating.
Friends called from 12 to 2 P.M., Saturday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.
Interment was in the I.O.O.F. cemetery at Du Quoin.

Merle C. Smith
Merle C. Smith, age 78, of Pinckneyville, formerlyof the Marissa area, died Wednesday, December 18, 2002 at his residence.
Merle was born in Pinckneyville on January 12, 1924, the son of Glen Lavern and Inez (Zoller) Smith. He was united in marriage to Vera Heine on September 28, 1943 in East St. Louis and she preceded him in death in 1996. Merle was a retired coal miner, having worked in the Freeburg Peabody Riverking Mine. He attended the Clarmin Baptist Church and more recently the Matthews Baptist Church south of Pinckneyville. Merle was a member of the UMWA and enjoyed hunting, fishing, yard work and traveling.
Merle is survived by one son, Danny Smith and wife Melissa of Marissa; one daughter, Cindy Seiber nad husband Daniel, also of Marissa; two brothers, Melvin E. Smith of Willisville and Jim Smith of Du Quoin; one sister, Eileen Craig and husband Douglas of Steeleville; eight grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and a special friend, Ruth Dempsay of Pinckneyville. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, two sons, Larry and Roy Dean; two brothers, Clifford and Mical Smith and a brother and sister in infancy.
Friends called at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home, Pinckneyvile, on Thursday evening, December 19 from 5 to 9 p.m. and on Friday morning from 8 a.m. until services.
Funeral services were held on Friday at 1 p.m. in the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home, Pinckneyville, with Rev. Wilbur Franklin officiating. Interment was in the Galum Presbyterian cemetery, rural Pinckneyville.
Memorials may be made to the Matthews Baptist Church.
Gary L. Stowers
Gary L. Stowers, 52, of Du Quoin, passed away at 8:45 a.m. Thursday, December 12, 2002 at his residence.
Gary was an examiner for the coal mines and had also worked at Blue Bell Packing.
He was born November 24, 1950 at Pinckneyville, the son of Dorothy Lee Stowers.
He is survived by two daughters, Tracy Asbury and husband Don of Du Quoin and Teresa Ruff and husband Matt of Du Quoin; six brothers, William Stowers, Clarence Stowers, Donald Stowers, James Stowers, Paul Stowers and Joseph Stowers; three sisters, Velma Harsy, Eva Elledge and Patsy Williams and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his mother and three sisters.
Funeral services were at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, December 14 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Rev. Gerald Wright officiating.
Friends called from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.
Interment was in Sunset Memorial Park at Du Quoin.
Marian Lu Winthrop
Marian Lu Winthrop, 77, of Du Quoin, passed away at 4:38 A.M., Friday, December 20, 2002 at the Marshall Browning Hospital in Du Quoin.
Marian was a homemaker. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Du Quoin, Ladies Golf Association, and former PTA member. She was a graduate of Stephens Womens College in Columbia, MO.
She was born March 30, 1925 at Du Quoin, IL, the daughter of Karl and Celeste (Cook) Weinberg.
She married
Robert B. Winthrop on October 27, 1945 at Paducah, KY and he survives.
She is survived by her husband of Du Quoin, two sons - John Robert Winthrop and wife Martha of Willisville, IL and Mike Karl Winthrop and wife Gail of Bellvue, OH, and five grandchildren - Meagan Winthrop, Elizabeth Winthrop, Geoff Winthrop, John Winthrop, and Ryan Winthrop.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services were at 1:00 P.M., Monday, December 23, 2002 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Dr. John Lewis officiating.
Friends called from 10 A.M. to 1 P.M., Monday at the Searby Funeral Home.
Interment was in the Sunset Memorial Park at Du Quoin.

Kathleen Smith MD
Kathleen Smith MD, age 80, of Columbia, Mo., passed away December 24, 2002 at University Hospital and Clinics. She was born October 9, 1922 in Arkansas.
She was a psychiatrist and superintendent of Macon Bliss Mental Health Center in St. Louis. After retirement, she returned to Southern Illinois University at Carbondale to get a degree in Art. She attended the First Presbyterian Church of Du Quoin.
Surviving are her beloved companion, Nancy Flavell of Columbia and her extended family that became Kathleen's adopted family.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
A private memorial service was held Friday, December 27 at Memorial Funeral Home in Columbia, Mo.

Milous Schwartz
Milous Schwartz, 83, of Du Quoin, passed away at 6:35 A.M., Sunday, December 8, 2002 at the Marshall Browning Hospital in Du Quoin.
Mil was a retired baker at the Schwartz Bakery which his family operated for ten years. He was also a retired machinist at Turco Mfg. Co. He was of the protestant faith. Mil was a Life Member of Du Quoin VFW Post 513 and a member of the Du Quoin American Legion. He was a US Army veteran of W. W. II.
He was born January 11, 1919 at Du Quoin, IL the son of Anton and Bessie (Vender) Schwartz.
He married
Edith Teel on October 14, 1950 at Carbondale, IL and she passed away October 6, 1987.
He is survived by three daughters- Ann Broderick of Gray Summit, MO, Bessie Schwartz of Du Quoin and Joann Miller of Elkville. He is also survived by six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.
Funeral services were at 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, December 10, 2002 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Rev. Gary Pate officiating.
Friends called from 10 to 11 A.M. Tuesday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.
Interment was in the Sunset Memorial Park at Du Quoin.
Military graveside rites were conducted by the Du Quoin VFW Post 513.

Walter J. Schneider
A funeral Mass for Walter J. Schneider, 76, was celebrated Saturday, January 4, 2003 at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Du Quoin. There was no visitation. Interment was in Sacred Heart cemetery.
Mr. Schneider died Monday, December 30, 2002 at St. Alexis Hospital in Hoffman Estates. He was born March 31, 1926 in Du Quoin. He and his wife have resided in Du Quoin since he retired in 1984.
Mr. Schneider was a 31-year resident of Hammond, Indiana, where he served as a school teacher for the entire time. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council #1298 in Du Quoin.
Surviving are his living wife, Loretta C. (Crider) Schneider, whom he married
August 16, 1948 in Du Quoin; children, Linda Harris of Arlington Heights and Robert (Clarissa) Schneider of St. John, Indiana; grandchildren, Jennifer and Jason Harris and Matthew Schneider; sisters and brother, Cleopha McNeely of Hot Springs, Arkansas, Eugene Schneider of Garnderville, Nevada and Ida Hess of Christopher and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, the late I.W. and Ida Schneider and his step-mother, Mary Buettner.

Leonard Sanders Sr.
Leonard Sanders Sr., 74, of Elkville, passed away Sunday, December 22, 2002 at 10:05 a.m. in Herrin Hospital.
Mr. Sanders was a retired coal miner and was the owner and operator of Elkville Senior Billiards. He was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Hallidayboro.
Mr. Sanders was born February 13, 1928 in Du Quoin, the son of Bennie and Myrtle (Rond) Sanders. He married
Ina Marie Gude on April 2, 1944 in Du Quoin.
Surviving are his wife, Ina of Elkville; sons, Rev. Leonard E. Sanders Jr. of Old Du Quoin and Gerald L. Sanders Sr. of Elkville; daughters, Lindell Kelly of Du Quoin and Rosaline Carter of Urbana; one brother, Bennie of Columbia, Mo.; 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Carrie Scott.
Private family funeral services were held Thursday, December 26 at 11 a.m. at Neal-McClure Memorial Chapel with Rev. Leon Kelly and Rev. Leonard Sanders Jr. Interment was in the IOOF cemetery at Du Quoin.
There was no visitation.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
Alice Marek
Alice Marek, 96, of Du Quoin, passed away Thursday, December 5, 2002 at 12:15 a.m. at Marshall Browning Hospital.
Mrs. Marek had worked in the Lard Room at the Packing Plant. She was a member of Greenwood Methodist Church.
She was born April 2, 1906 in Elkville, the daughter of William W. and Berthena Ann (Powell) Watson. She married
William Waller in 1924 at De Soto and he preceded her in death on September 22, 1944. She then married
Frank Marek on April 27, 1959 at Du Quoin and he preceded her in death on March 27, 1995.
Surviving are two sons, Andrew Waller of Crossville, Tenn. and William Waller of Dewey, Ariz; four daughters, Wilma Johnson of Du Quoin, Roberta Swisher of Mulkeytown, Sharon Louis of Pinckneyville and Karen Waller of Du Quoin; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; one son, Raleigh; three brothers and one sister.
Funeral services were Monday, December 9 at 10 a.m. at Neal-McClure Memorial Chapel with Rev. David Morgan officiating. Interment was in IOOF cemetery at Du Quoin.
Friends called from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Neal-McClure Funeral Home in Du Quoin and from 7:30 a.m. until time of services on Monday.
Barbara Helen Kuberski
Barbara Helen Kuberski, 87, of Tamaroa, passed away at 1:43 A.M., Saturday, December 28, 2002 at St. Mary's Health Center in Clayton, Missouri.
Barbara was a homemaker. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Tamaroa.
She was born October 25, 1915 at Radom, IL, the daughter of Leo and Josephine (Sodka) Rybacki.
She married
Louis A. Kuberski on May 16, 1933 at Radom, IL and he preceded her in death on June 16, 1994.
She is survived by four sons - Paul Kuberski Sr. and wife Caroline of Tamaroa, Jerry Kuberski and wife Cindy of Union City, TN, Clarence Kuberski of Tamaroa, and James Kuberski and wife Cathy of Mulkeytown, two daughters - Helen Perjak and husband Jerome of Ashley, and Bernice Frost and husband Lawrence of Cahokia, IL, one sister - Theresa Sturgis of Richview, IL, one half sister - Irene Miller of Wynne, AR, three brothers - Joe Rybacki of Cahokia, IL, Ed Rybacki of Mount Vernon, IL, and Louie Rybacki of St. Louis, MO, two half brothers - Leonard Rybacki of Du Quoin and Eugene Rybacki of Du Quoin, eighteen grandchildren and forty great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son - Lawrence Joseph Kuberski in 1952, two brothers - Frank and Tony, and two sisters - Mary and Clara.
Funeral services were at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, December 31, 2002 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Tamaroa with Msgr. Melvin Vandeloo officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 8 P.M., Monday at the Searby Funeral Home in Tamaroa.
Rosary was said at 7 P.M. Monday at the funeral home.
Interment was in the Immaculate Conception cemetery in Tamaroa.

Barbara Ann Graham Kronk
Barbara Ann Graham Kronk, 69, of Jefferson City, Missouri, formerly of Du Quoin, passed away on December 9, 2002 at Capital Region Medical Center in Jefferson City, Missouri.
Barbara attended school in Du Quoin and was a graduate of Du Quoin High School. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and her Master of Science in Education from University of Missouri, St. Louis. She taught school at Granite City, Illinois for a number of years before moving to Jefferson City, Missouri, where she had been employed with the Jefferson City Public School system for over thirty years until her retirement. She taught Remedial Reading at South School, Southwest School, East School, Gordon School, and West School in the elementary grades. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jefferson City, the Missouri State Teachers Association, the Cole County Retired Teachers Association, the Missouri State Retired Teachers Association, the American Early Childhood Association, and the Cole County Historical Society where she served as a docent for the Cole County Historical Society. She was also a member of the Adult 7 and the Koinoina Classes of the First Baptist Church, member of the Friendship Singers, the Adult Senior Council, Representative of the Concord Association for the First Baptist Church, member of the Mission Development Committee, and the Missouri Baptist Historical Commission. She had also been with several Ministry Teams of the church, including the Homebound Ministry, the Sunday Visitation Ministry, the Caring Hands Ministry, and the Baptism Ministry. She had been very active with the Missions of the church, being a Mission Kids Teacher, member of the Missions Committee, and a member of the Women's Mission Union. She had been a second grade teacher of the Sunday School Class. She had done missionary work in China and Alaska, having been to China on six different occasions. She had also been active with the Meals on Wheels program.
She was born July 26, 1933 at Benton, Illinois, the daughter of Preston Frazier and Stella (Gilliam) Graham.
She is survived by two sisters - Maribel McMillan of Murphysboro, Illinois and Linda Sue Rolando of Alamo, Texas and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church of Jefferson City on Thursday, December 12, 2002 at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Dr. Doyle Sager and Rev. David Phelps officiating. Graveside services were conducted on Sunday, December 15, 2002 at the I.O.O.F. cemetery in Du Quoin with Rev. Gary Pate officiating.
Interment was in the I.O.O.F. cemetery in Du Quoin.
