Woodrow Marion Fildes
Woodrow Marion Fildes, 85, of Pekin, passed away peacefully in his sleep at 4:00 a.m. Saturday, December 14, 2002 at his home. He had emphysema.
Woody taught Math at Pekin High School for 27 years. He was the head of the Math Department for 16 years, retiring in June 1978. The Pekin Times recounted in the May 11, 1978 edition that Mr. Fildes 'built a reputation in his field for his accomplishments, which he achieved through careful planning and dedicated service.'
He served in the Army during WW II in the counter-intelligence division. He was a member of Parkway Christian Church in Pekin where he taught an adult class for many years.
Woody was born November 28, 1917 in Elm River Township in Wayne County, the son of Rice Emery and Pansy (Laird) Fildes. He married
Dorthy Rath on October 7, 1939 in St. Genevieve, Mo. and she preceded him in death on April 2, 1970. He then married
Doris Thomas Rosenlieb on January 17, 1975 in the Christian Church in Clay City.
He celebrated his 85th birthday surrounded by family.
Surviving are his wife, Doris Fildes of Pekin; two daughters, Ramona (Larry) Graves of Pekin and Jeanne (Bill) Kunz of Portola Valley, California; three step-daughters, Cheryl Tennant, Sandra Carpenter and Connie Hudgeons, all of Albquerque, New Mexico; one son, David (Chris) Fildes of Tremont; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; one brother, Willis Fildes of Spotsylvania, Virginia and two sisters, Hilda Hamic of Haynesville, Louisiana and Velmalene Farris of Abilene, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; two sisters and one son, Roger Fildes.
Funeral services were Wednesday, December 18 at 7 p.m. at Woolsey Funeral Home in Pekin with Pastor Joshua Bennett officiating. Visitation was from 4 p.m. until time of service at the funeral home on Wednesday.
Graveside services were held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, December 19, 2002 in Parris cemetery in Vergennes.
Memorial contributions may be made toward a Woodrow M. Fildes math award at Pekin High School or to his church.
Blanche Lemmon
Blanche Lemmon, 89, of Tamaroa, passed away at 7:18 P.M., Thursday, December 26, 2002 at Fair Acres Nursing Home in Du Quoin.
Blanche was a homemaker. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Tamaroa and Pinckneyville Eastern Star.
She was born December 23, 1913 at Tamaroa, IL, the daughter of Ed and Ethel (Brown) Smith.
She married
William R. Lemmon on April 14, 1933 at Pinckneyville, IL and he preceded her in death on October 17, 1983.
She is survived by one daughter - Mary Ann Brandon of Tamaroa, one son - William Ray Lemmon and wife Carolyn of Marion, one sister - Vivian Lewis of Du Quoin, five grandchildren - Alexis Wilson, Chad and Brad Morgenthaler, Dustin Brandon, and Melinda Lemmon, and four great-grandchildren - Justin, Lindsey and Matt Blue, and Gordon Wallin.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son - Larry Lemmon, one brother - Everett Smith, and two half sisters.
Funeral services were at 1:30 P.M., Sunday, December 29, 2002 at the Searby Funeral Home in Tamaroa with Rev. Raymond Baggott officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 8 P.M., Saturday at the Searby Funeral Home in Tamaroa.
Interment was in the Mueller Hill cemetery at Pinckneyville.

Donald Loyd Gidak
Donald Loyd Gidak died December 10 at his home in Casa Grand, Arizona.
He was the son of Nick and Glorene Gidak.
Surviving are his wife Gracie; two daughters, Melinda Aldrete and Sandra Tucker of Casa Grand; grandchildren and sisters, Helen Beidel of Carlsbad, New Mexico and Mary Ann Harris of Du Quoin.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Eugene Gidak; sister, Eileen and his parents.
Melvin H. McCaslin
Melvin H. McCaslin, 93, of Arnold, Missouri, formerly of Elkville, passed away at 6:03 P.M., Monday, December 9, 2002 at the St. Anthony's Medical Center in St. Louis, Missouri.
Melvin was a retired mechanic with the Elverado School District and had also worked at Tuck Tape of Carbondale and Truex Trarer Coal Mine for fifteen years. He was a member of Elkville Methodist Church. He was a US Army veteran of W.W. II.
He was born June 8, 1909, at Ramsey, IL, the son of Bert H. and Berrie Ellen (Hicks) McCaslin.
He married
Maxine (Burns) Smith on July 5, 1941 at Cape Girardeau, Missouri and she preceded him in death on April 12, 1994.
He is survived by one daughter - Bonnie McClintock of Arnold, MO, grandchildren - Barry McClintock, Jason McClintock, Dennis McCaslin, Steven McCaslin, Kevin McCaslin, Cynthia Watson, Claudia Winstanley and several great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one son, Melvin B.J. McCaslin, and two sisters.
Funeral services were at 1:00 P.M., Thursday, December 12, 2002 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Bro. Jerry Aken officiating.
Friends called from 12 to 1 P.M., Thursday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.
Interment was in the Elkville cemetery in Elkville.

Daniel G. Gray
Daniel G. Gray, age 48, of Benton, formerly of London Mills, died as the result of a mining accident at Catenary Coal Co. near Cabin Creek, West Virginia on December 26, 2002.
He was born November 18, 1954 at Canton, the son of William G. and Bridget (O'Lain) Gray. He married
Judy Pence on October 3, 1993 in the state of Kentucky. She survives with his mother of London Mills; two sons, Brandon Gray of Maquon and Timothy Gray of Benton; two grandchildren, Chase and Kaitlyn Gray; one sister, Catherine Leah Gray of Galesburg and two foster daughters, Chelsea and Jade. He was preceded in death by his father.
He worked as a coal miner since 1975, working at Southern Illinois Mines and later working at the Catenary Coal Mine in Cabin Creek, West Virginia until his death.
He was a graduate of Valley High School at London Mills, a member of the Moose Lodge in West Virginia and was an avid coon hunter.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Henry-Lange Memorial Home in Lewistown, where visitation was held two hours prior to services. Burial was in the Cuba cemetery at Cuba, Ill.
Josephine Miller Olson
Word has been received of the death of Josephine Miller Olson, 83, of Williamsburg, Va. on December 17, 2002. She is survived by one son, Richard Olson of Westboro, Mass. and two daughters, Cynthia Olson of Manchester, N.H. and Roberta Santoro of Gainesville, Va. and four grandchildren. Josephine is also survived by one sister, Florence (Miller) Rees of Greenville; one brother, Louis V. Miller of Bloomington, Ind. and several cousins, as well as nieces and nephews.
Josephine was born in Du Quoin on October 12, 1919 to Emil E. and Emilia (Wepiewski) Miller. She graduated from Du Quoin High School and served in WW II. She first worked as a clerk in the Selective Service office in Pinckneyville. Her pesonal sense of civic duty prompted her to volunteer with the Women's Army Corps (WACS) for two years. She was promoted to the rank of Technical Sergeant and was awarded the first Fort Dix, N.J. army commendation ribbon for meritorious service. She and Garrett. S. Olson were married
in 1946. For many years they owned Olson Realty in Summit, New Jersey.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her elder brother, Henry C. Miller; an infant brother, Frank Miller and her husband, who served in both WW II and the Korean War. As veterans, both Josephine and Gary were buried in Arlington National cemetery.
Robert Douglas Jackson
Robert Douglas Jackson, 64, Tamaroa, formerly of Tennessee, passed away Thursday, December 6, 2002 at Ft. Meyers, Fla.
Mr. Jackson was born June 27, 1938 in Phoenix, Ariz, the son of Robert H. and Margaret (O'Flaherty) Jackson. He married
Linda McManus.
He worked as a construction painter for Painting Local #215. He was a member of Liberty Church of Du Quoin.
Surviving are his wife, Linda Jackson of Tamaroa; his mother, Margaret Jackson of Godfrey; step-daughters, Shelley (Michael) Reehle of Caseyville, Kimberly (Robert) McDaniel of Pittsburg, Kan.; Tamara Santos of Pinckneyville and Victoria (Terry) McCrary of Pinckneyville; brothers, Rex (Janet) Jackson of Lehigh Acres, Fla., Daniel Jackson of Columbia, Mark Jackson of Lehigh Acres, Fla. and Michael (Sarah) Jackson of Denham Springs, La.; one sister, Cheryl Goodall of Troy and seven step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father and one brother, Gary Richard Jackson.
Funeral services were Thursday, December 12 at 1 p.m. at Lake View Funeral Home in Fairview Heights. Interment was in Lake View Memorial Gardens in Fairview Heights.
Friends called Wednesday evening from 4 to 8 p.m.

Mabel E. Miller
Mrs. Mabel Eulane Miller (nee Sweatt), age 85, of Pinckneyville, IL died on Sunday, December 8, 2002 in the St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Belleville, IL.
Mabel was born in Perry County, IL on October 10, 1917 the daughter of Leroy Huggins Sweatt and Louella (Marlow) Sweatt. She married
Clarence Henry Miller on January 30, 1937 in Perry County, IL and he preceded her in death on October 25, 1985. Mabel's great, great grandfather Allen Sweatt was a private in the Revolutionary War, enlisting in August, 1780 with the North Carolina Line. In 1792 he married
Nancy Evans in Wake Co. N.C. . The Sweatt family eventually settled in McNairy County, TN. in the 1850's.
Surviving Mabel is her son, Thomas Miller of Smithton, IL, two grandchildren David and Steven, two great grandchildren, Ashley and Britney Miller, and several nieces and nephews. Those that preceded her in death include a daughter, Marilyn in 1938, her brothers and sisters, Homer, Harry, James "Buddy" Scott, Mrs. Irene (Walter) Feltmeyer, and Mrs. Bessie (Rollie) Moore.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, December 12, 2002 at 10:30 a.m. in the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville, IL with Monsignor Harry Jerome officiating. Interment was in the St. Bruno Catholic cemetery.
Visitation was at the funeral home on Wednesday, December 11, 2002 from 6:00 p.m. till 8:00 p.m. and on Thursday, December 12, 2002 from 8:00 a.m. till services.
Memorials may be made to the St. Bruno cemetery Association.
Robert B. Newborn
Robert B. Newborn, 77, of Du Quoin, passed away at 12:45 A.M., Tuesday, December 31, 2002 at the Fair Acres Nursing Home in Du Quoin.
Robert was a retired top boss for the coal mines. He last worked at Waltonville #6 mine. He was a US Navy veteran of W.W. II. He was a member of First United Pentecostal Church of Du Quoin, a Life Member of Du Quoin VFW Post 513, a Life Member of AM Vets Post 148 - Waltonville, a member of Du Quoin American Legion, and a member of UMW of A.
He was born May 14, 1925 at Tamaroa, IL, the son of Benjamin Robert and Elsie May (Boismenue) Newborn.
He married
Alberta Gajewski Thomas on October 20, 1981 at Mt. Vernon, IL and she survives.
He is survived by his wife of Du Quoin, 4 sons - Robert Newborn and wife Janet of Du Quoin, Jim Lamke and wife Karen of Scheller, Bill Lamke and wife Georgia of New Oxford, PA, Benjamin Newborn and wife Brandi of Scheller, four daughters - Pam Moore and husband William of Edwardsville, IL, Margaret Ozburn and husband Jerry of Duluth, GA, Janice Strong of Du Quoin, and Connie Ridgeway and husband Keith of Scheller, two brothers - Billy Newborn and wife Dorothy of Tamaroa and James (Red) Newborn and wife Kim of Streamwood, IL, eighteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, one sister, one granddaughter, and one great-granddaughter.
Funeral services were at 10:00 A.M., Friday, January 3, 2003 at the Searby Funeral Home in Tamaroa with Rev. C.L. McKinnies and Rev. Dan McKinnies officiating.

Interment was in the St. Barbara cemetery in Scheller, IL.

Archie M. Queen
Archie M. Queen, 88, of Tamaroa, passed away at 2:25 P.M., Wednesday, January 1, 2003 at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.
Archie was a retired farmer. He was a member of Friendship Church of Christ in Tamaroa and a former church elder.
He was born October 28, 1914 at Du Quoin, IL, the son of Homer and Martha (Hester) Queen.
He married
Viola Evalyn Miller on October 22, 1938 at Du Quoin, IL and she preceded him in death on July 30, 1996.
He is survived by three daughters - Bonnie Tedder of Tamaroa, Glenetta Loucks and husband Gordon of Tamaroa, and Mala Jones and husband Larry of Du Quoin, eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one daughter - Brenda Tate, and twelve brothers and sisters.
Funeral services were at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, January 4, 2003 at the Searby Funeral Home in Tamaroa with his grandsons - Tim and Todd Tate and Bro. Darrell McCombs officiating.

Interment was in the Sunset Memorial Park at Du Quoin.

Edna E. Eaton
Edna E. Eaton, 91, of DuQuoin, passed away Friday, November 1, 2002 at her home.
Mrs. Eaton had been a Dental Assistant. She was a member of Sunfield United Methodist Church.
She was born September 12, 1911 at Central City, the daughter of Edward and Maude (Zimmerman) Gore. She married
Joseph Harold Eaton on October 17, 1929 in Booneville, Indiana and he preceded her in death on April 14, 1989.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Judith and Charles Helsley of DuQuoin; granddaughters, Cathy Chaney, Launa Harsy and Sherri Smith; grandson, Travis Helsley; sister, Laura Belle Goodwin of Fairview Heights; 18 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, infant son, two brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services were Monday, November 4 at 2 p.m. at Neal-McClure Memorial Chapel with Rev. Jerry Dunn officiating. Interment was in Sunset Memorial Park at DuQuoin.
