Linda D. Owens-Followell
Linda D. Owens-Followell, 47, of Tamaroa, IL passed away at 11:27 A.M., Sunday, December 1, 2002 at Carbondale Memorial Hospital.
Linda was born on September 19, 1955, the daughter of Regina (Kuberski) Owens and Ralph Redcliff, in Pinckneyville, IL. She was married
to Roger Heape for sixteen years. She married
Randall Lee Followell on September 7, 2002 in Tamaroa, IL.
Mrs. Followell was a 1976 graduate of Du Quoin High School. She was employed by the Maid Rite Restaurant in Du Quoin for fifteen years, and for the last ten years, she was employed by Fair Acres Nursing Home in Du Quoin, IL. She was also the owner of R & R Feed and Bait in Tamaroa, IL. Mrs. Followell was a member of the First Baptist Church of Tamaroa.
She is survived by her husband, Randy; three daughters, Dianna (husband Joseph) Eberhardt of Du Quoin, Jennifer (husband Gregory) Kirk of Alabama, and Marie Heape of Tamaroa; mother, Regina Owens of Tamaroa, one sister, Sharon (husband Ron) Rone of Du Quoin, two grandchildren, Bart Eberhardt of Du Quoin and Riley Kirk of Alabama; two nephews, Michael Alvis II and Nicholas Alvis, and many cousins.
Her father preceded her in death.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts to help with medical expenses can be mailed to Randall Followell at Box 41, Tamaroa, IL 62888.
Per Linda's request her body was donated to the SIU Medical School.

Myrtle Marie Swain
Myrtle Marie Swain, 99, of Elkville, passed away at 3:30 P.M., Wednesday, November 13, 2002 at the Marion Memorial Hospital in Marion.
Myrtle was a homemaker and a member of Elkville United Methodist Church and DeSoto Eastern Star. She enjoyed flower gardening.
She was born on May 21, 1903 in Jackson County, Illinois, the daughter of Samuel E. and Lillie Alice (Fegley) Graeff.
She married
Raymond Edward Swain on September 6, 1926 in Murphysboro, IL and he preceded her in death on September 20, 1974.
She is survived by one step-daughter-in-law - Eileen Swain of Edwardsville, IL, three grandsons - Carl Swain, Richard Swain and Paul Swain, all of California, two sisters - Golda Graeff of Johnston City, IL and Lillian Graeff of Benton, IL, one niece - Beverly Mandrell of Benton, IL, and one nephew - Clarence Graeff of Elkville, IL.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother - Cecil Graeff, four sisters - Beulah Minor, Ruth Graeff, Dorothy Graeff, and Cecelia Graeff, and one step-son - Bernard Swain.
Funeral services were at 3 P.M., Sunday, November 17, 2002 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Rev. Daryl Williams officiating.
Interment was in the Elkville cemetery at Elkville.
Friends called from 2 to 3 P.M., Sunday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.

Bobby T. Spurlock
Bobby T. Spurlock Sr., 62, of Du Quoin, passed away at 7:14 P.M., Thursday, November 21, 2002 at the Memorial Hospital in Carbondale.
Bobby was a retired coal miner from Ayrshire Coal Company, Chandler, IN. He was of the Baptist faith.
He was born May 25, 1940 at Franklin, KY, the son of John T. and Sue M. (Fowler) Spurlock.
He married
Clara Joann Ridgeway on April 22, 1967 at Du Quoin, IL and she survives.
He is survived by his wife of Du Quoin, two sons - Bobby Thomas Spurlock Jr. and wife Renee of Chandler, IN and Kevin Earnest Spurlock and wife Regina of Tamaroa, four sisters - Carolyn Morgan of Du Quoin, Dorothy (Dottie) Ridgeway and husband Charles of Du Quoin, Sheila James and husband Alan of Du Quoin, and Sondra Struck and husband Bobby of Pawleys Island, South Carolina, three aunts - Mildred Shaw of Kentucky, Jean Travelstead of Kentucky, and Thelma Spurlock of Tennessee, one uncle - Paul Esque of Indiana, one special aunt - Geraldine Crowder of Arkansas, nine grandchildren - Kevin Wayne, Brandi Faye, Sean Logan, Brittany Renee, Alexandria Lynn, Thomas Jo, Maggie Mae, Tyler Wayne, and Mandi Jo, mother-in-law - Clara Mae Ridgeway of Pinckneyville, and many nieces and nephews, and brothers-in-laws and sisters-in-laws.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services were at 1:30 P.M., Sunday, November 24, 2002 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Rev. Darrell Porter officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 8 P.M., Saturday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.
Interment was in the Old Du Quoin cemetery at Du Quoin.

Helen R. Dennis
Helen R. Dennis, 85, of Du Quoin, passed away at 7:00 A.M., Saturday, December 21, 2002 at the Marshall Browning Hospital in Du Quoin.
Helen was a homemaker and had worked at the Dennis Brothers Grocery Store for many years and at the Dooley Grocery Store for several years. She was a member and active in the activities of the Du Quoin Gospel Assembly Church. She was a member of the Marshall Browning Hospital Auxiliary.
Helen was born June 14, 1917 at Clifford, IL the daughter of Lee and Nola (Gohlier) Spears.
She was married
to Oliver Dennis for thirty nine years and he preceded her in death on November 23, 1974.
She is survived by a daughter- Diana Dudas and husband Don of Valparaiso, FL, three grandsons- David A. Dudas and wife Kristine of Mesa, AZ, Dan Dennis and wife Patricia of Humble, TX, Roger Dennis and wife Melissa of Du Quoin, IL, five great grandchildren- David R. Dudas of Mesa, AZ, Evan and Tyler Dennis of Humble, TX, Morgan and Madison Dennis of Du Quoin, IL, one brother- Dick Spears and wife Betty of Marion, IL, brother-in-law- Chuck Dennis and wife Ruby of Du Quoin, IL sisters-in-law- Luella Spears of Marrisa, Kathryn Pair of West Frankfort, IL, Amanda Hamburger and husband of Wayne of Eldorado, IL special caregiver- Becky Carrothers of Du Quoin, several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son- James Dennis, two brothers- Harry and Bill Spears, two sisters- Ruth Hawk and Mary Bell Caviness.
Funeral services were at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, December 24, 2002 at the Gospel Assembly Church in Du Quoin with Rev. Dennis Fitzsimmons officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 8 P.M. Monday, at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin and from 9 A.M. until time of service at the church on Tuesday.
Interment was in the IOOF cemetery at Du Quoin.

Mary E. Morgenthaler
Mary E. Morgenthaler, 78, passed away on November 18, 2002 at 12:35 a.m. at Chester County Healthcare in Henderson, Tenn.
Mary was born on June 17, 1924 in DuQuoin, the daughter of the late Ray and Flora (Fergus) Pritchett. She was reared in DuQuoin and attended schools there, graduating High School in 1944. She married
Welcher 'Ted' Morgenthaler on April 22, 1944 in DuQuoin and he preceded her in death on November 8, 2002, just 10 days prior to Mary's death.
After Mr. Morgenthaler returned from service they made their home in DuQuoin where they farmed and did dairy work. They later lived in Monmouth, where they owned and operated Ted's Furniture and Upholstery until they retired in 1983. They moved to Johnston City and lived there until 1997, when they moved to Jackson, Tenn. to make their home with their daughter, Marilyn. They moved to Chester County Healthcare in 2002.
Survivors include two sons, Homer Nelson and Brenda Morgenthaler of Johnston City and Carroll and Sharon Morgenthaler of Decatur, Ala.; one daughter, Marilyn Sue and William Johnston of Jackson, Tenn.; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, November 21 at Mitchell Hughes Funeral Home at 10 a.m. with Rev. Val Treece officiating. Burial followed in Friendship cemetery at Goreville.
Visitation was held on Wednesday evening from 5 until 8 p.m. at Mitchell-Hughes.
Wiley Jackson House
Wiley Jackson House, devoted husband of Betty Jean Strong House, died on December 10, 2002, in Bermuda Dunes, California. Jack was the son of Amanda Fishback House and George Wiley House of DuQuoin, Illinois. He was the nephew of Almira "Allie" House Ozburn, of Pinckneyville, Illinois. He grew up in DuQuoin, graduating from DuQuoin Township High School, where he and Betty were high school sweethearts. After graduation Jack enrolled at the University of Missouri, Columbia, and he was later honored with a basketball scholarship. He was a member of the Phi Delta Fraternity at MU.
Jack's studies were interrupted by World War II. He enlisted with the ROTC at Northwestern University and was trained in communications. He was a navigator on a LST with the US Navy and his highest rank was Lieutenant. After his honorable discharge, he returned home, fell in love with Betty, and returned to MU where he received a Bachelor of Science in History. Jack and Betty were married
in 1947 . They moved to Okawville and Jack taught history and coached baseball and basketball at Okawville High School.
In the early 1950's, as the House family grew, employment opportunities arose, and Jack began his thirty year career in dairy management, working first as an advertising manager for Midwest Dairies in Memphis, Tennessee. After the acquisition of Midwest Dairies by the Southland Corporation, Jack and his family moved to Dallas, Texas where he was general manager of Cabell's Dairies, and in 1966, the House family took up permanent residence in Los Angeles, California. Jack retired as the Western Regional Manager of the Dairy Division of the Southland Corporation which included overseeing Adohr Farms (Los Angeles) and Spreckles Dairies (San Francisco).
For the past 13 years, Betty and Jack have been residing in Bermuda Dunes, a small community outside of Palm Desert, California. Jack was a loving husband to Betty, as well as her best friend and they celebrated 55 years of marriage prior to their passing. He was a devoted father to his girls as they were devoted to him. He was a stand-up guy, honest to a fault and a man everyone could depend on. Jack's word was his bond. He enjoyed life, working and playing to his fullest, including a golf handicap envied by many.
Jack and Betty are deeply missed by family and friends. In California, they are survived by three daughters, Suda Kay House Lazzara, Judge Mary Thornton House, and Christy Carol House Marentay, sons-in-law, Thomas Lazzara, James Thornton, and John Marentay, grandchildren Emma Victoria Lazzara, Calamity Jaye Marentay, Sarah Elizabeth Thornton, and Kyle Richard Thornton. Jack is survived by Betty's brother and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Harry E. (Joe Ann) Strong, Jr., of DuQuoin, and nieces and nephews, Janet McCurdy, Harry E. Strong, III, Cindy Heape, Patricia Aue, Joseph Strong, Anne Paxton, and Susie Johnson. Jack is survived by family in Pinckneyville, Lorraine Ozburn (Mrs. Robert Ozburn), Bill Ozburn and Don and Sandra Ozburn of Rockville, Illinois.
A family service is pending until spring of this year.

Lee R. Kuhnert
Lee R. Kuhnert, age 85, of Pinckneyville, passed away at 9:30 p.m. Saturday evening, January 11, 2003 at the Pinckneyville Community Hospital.
Lee was born March 13, 1917 in Pinckneyville, the son of August and Elizabeth (Loos) Kuhnert. He was united in marriage to Goldic Magerkurth in 1939 in Perryville, Mo. and she preceded him in death on December 4, 1984. Lee was a retired Coal Miner, having worked in the Spartan Mines with Zeigler Coal Company in Coulterville. He was a member of the Beaucoup Baptist Church of Pinckneyville, a member of the UMWA Local #9905 and enjoyed 'hogging' for catfish and hunting.
Lee is survived by three sons, Roger and wife Mary Kuhnert of Pinckneyville, Alen and wife Dorothy Kuhnert of Sebring, Florida, and Virgil Kuhnert of Davenport, Iowa; one daughter, Gloria Conroy of Pinckneyville; five grandchildren, Kelli Yackle of Chicago, Krista Straight and husband Jeff of Belleville, Brett Kuhnert of North Africa, Aaron Kuhnert and wife Courtney of Carbondale and Johanna Kuhnert of Calona; 10 great-grandchildren; one sister, Augusta Lacy of Pinckneyville; one brother, Leslie Kuhnert and wife Iola of Pinckneyville; two sisters-in-law, Joyce and Hilda Kuhnert and numerous other relatives. Lee was preceded in death by his parents; wife; six brothers, Harry, Louis, Willard, Dale, Leonard and John; three sisters, Lillie, Vera and Bonnie; Dean Davis and a grandson, Kraig Kuhnert.
Funeral services were held Tuesday morning, January 14 at the Beaucoup Baptist Church in Pinckneyville at 10 a.m. with Reverend Randy Plunkett officiating. Interment was in the Mueller Hill cemetery, Pinckneyville.
Friends called at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville Monday evening from 5 to 8 p.m. then at the church on Tuesday morning from 8 a.m. until time of services.
Memorials may be made to Mueller Hill cemetery or the Pinckneyville Health Care Activity Fund.
Neil William Pursell
Neil William Pursell, age 87, of Pinckneyville, died Wednesday, January 22, 2003 in the Veteran's Administration Hospital, Marion.
Neil was born in Pinckneyville on November 2, 1915, a son of Rolland William and Sophia E. (Miller) Pursell. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II, was a member of American Legion Post #1277 and worked at the former Pinckneyville Garment Factory.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Harrison (Tub) Pursell and wife Dorothy; four sisters, Alberta Hammann and husband Edward, Flettah Sullivan and husband Johnny, Lola Fulton and husband Corky and one sister, LaVerna, in infancy.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 25 at 3 p.m. in the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home, Pinckneyville, with Pastor Paul Ritter officiating. Interment was in the IOOF cemetery, Pinckneyville.
Friends called at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home, Pinckneyville, on Saturday from 1 p.m. until time of service.

Jason Louis Gremmels
Jason Louis Gremmels, 18, of Decatur, IL, passed away at 10:05 A.M., Monday, January 6, 2003 at his residence.
Jason was a student at Millikin University.
He was born February 27, 1984 at Golden, CO, the son of Louis and Annette (Reed) Gremmels.
He is survived by his mother of Decatur, IL, two sisters - Ashley Gremmels of Decatur, IL and Pam Gremmels of Monticello, IL, two brothers - David Gremmels of Florence, AL and Kent Gremmels of Trussville, AL, grandfather - Norman Reed of Taylorville, IL, great-grandmother - Goldie Reed of Taylorville, IL, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, one brother - Duane Gremmels, and grandmother - Delores Reed.
Graveside services were held at 2:30 P.M., Wednesday, January 8, 2003 at Sunset Memorial Park in Du Quoin with Rev. John E. Johnson officiating.

A memorial service was held at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, January 9, 2003 at Unity Church in Decatur, IL.
Interment was in the Sunset Memorial Park in Du Quoin.
Rev. L. Don Johnston
Rev. L. Don Johnston, age 72, of Pinckneyville, IL died at his home on Sunday, January 19, 2003 at 3:26 p.m.
Don was born on October 13, 1930 in Evansville, IN, a son of Albert and Flo Marie (Caldwell) Johnston. He married
Betty Ann Evans on October 30, 1948 in Henderson, KY, and she preceded him in death on July 16, 2002.
Reverend Johnston was a pastor for 55 years, was Pastor Emeritus of Grace Outreach Church, Pinckneyville, former chairman and member of the Pinckneyville Ministerial Alliance, former General Board Member of the International Ministerial Assoc., a friend to various missionary groups, a Kentucky Colonel, author of several books, and provided worship services to the radio and television ministries.
Survivors include 5 sons, John Johnston and wife Sherry of Georgia, Ron Johnston and wife Karen of Oklahoma, Keith Johnston and wife Lou of Indiana, Deon Johnston and wife Barb of Pinckneyville, IL, Tim Johnston and wife Patti of Michigan, one daughter, Candy Steele and husband Reverend Kirk of Pinckneyville, IL, fourteen grandchildren, Lori Ann Johnston, Jenifer Smoker and husband Mike, Jeremy Johnston and wife Jessica, Joshua Johnston, Andrew Johnston, Holly Johnston, Amber Johnston, Kenton Steele, Beth Ann Steele, Nicholas Johnston, Hillary Johnston, Katie Steele, Taylor Rose Johnston and Haley Johnston, great grandson, Michael Patrick Smoker, a sister: Mary Jane Turner of KY, a sister: Margie Smith, two brothers: Clyde and Ted Johnston, and two sisters-in-law: Nancy and Edna Johnston, all of FL. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers, and two sisters.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, January 22, 2003 in the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home, Pinckneyville, at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Bob Williams and other guest ministers officiating. Interment was in the Galum Presbyterian cemetery in Pinckneyville, IL.
Friends called at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home, Pinckneyville, on Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. till 9:00 p.m. and on Wednesday from 8:00 a.m. till services.

Thomas E. Dunavan
Thomas E. Dunavan, 86, of Du Quoin, passed away at 8:20 A.M., Saturday, January 18, 2003 at Fair Acres Nursing Home in Du Quoin.
Thomas worked as a taxi driver, a correctional officer at Mernard Prison, on the railroad and at Du Quoin Boys Club. He was of the Protestant faith.
He was born October 27, 1916, at Du Quoin, the son of Daniel and Etta (Jackson) Dunavan.
He is survived by two nephews - Tom Morgan and Robert Black and several great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Daniel Dunavan and two sisters - Nellie Morgan and Lillian Black.
Graveside services were at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, January 22, 2003 at I.O.O.F. cemetery in Du Quoin with Rev. C.L. McKinnies officiating
Interment was in the I.O.O.F. cemetery at Du Quoin.
Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin was in charge of arrangements.
Those attending the service were asked to go directly to the cemetery.
