Robert Lyle McMurray
Robert Lyle McMurray, 78, of Belleville, IL, formerly of Dowell and Du Quoin, passed away at 10:47 A.M., Wednesday, January 22, 2003 at Belleville Memorial Hospital in Belleville, IL.
Robert had worked as a Carman for Illinois Central Railroad for forty-two years. He was a member of Eastview Baptist Church in Belleville, IL. He was a US Army veteran of W.W. II.
He was born May 13, 1924 at Du Quoin, IL, the son of Louie and Goldie (Gross) McMurray.
He married
Opal B. Daffron on October 19, 1944 at St. Louis, MO and she survives.
He is survived by his wife of Belleville, two sons - Richard McMurray and wife Mary Ann of Smithton, IL, and Jerry McMurray and wife Laura of Park City, KY, grandchildren - Michelle Luces (Erick), Cheryl Kelso (Jerry), Robert McMurray (Gena), Jeffrey McMurray (Jen), and Andrew McMurray, great grandchildren - Jaqueline Poole and Corey Kelso, two brothers - Kenneth McMurray and wife Ara Lee of Valier, IL and Norman McMurray and wife Lorraine of Cherokee Village, AR, and one sister - Betty Milks of Brodhead, WI.
He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, one sister, and one granddaughter - Bonnie Jean McMurray.
Funeral services were at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, January 25, 2003 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Rev Ron McGrew officiating.
Friend called from 5 to 8 P.M., Thursday at the Eastview Baptist Church in Belleville, IL and from 5 to 8 P.M., Friday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.
Interment was in the Sunset Memorial Park at Du Quoin.

Sam Marion Cicardo
Sam Marion Cicardo, 81, of Du Quoin, passed away at 3:05 p.m. Monday, February 17, 2003 at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Marion.
Mr. Cicardo was a laborer and a life-long resident of Du Quoin. He was born June 1, 1921 in Perry County, the son of Joseph and Dominca (Lima) Cicardo. He was a U.S. military veteran and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Surviving are one brother, John Cicardo of Chester and three sisters, Mary Bird of Du Quoin, Rose DeHue of Crawfordsville, Ind. and Josephine Breitwieser of Jacksonville, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Friends called at Maxton Funeral Home in Du Quoin after 8 a.m. on Friday. The Rosary was said at 9:30 a.m. on Friday morning.
Funeral Mass was held at 10 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Du Quoin with Rev. Msgr. Harry J. Jerome officiating.
Interment was in Sacred Heart Catholic cemetery.

Walter J. Schneider
A funeral Mass for Walter J. Schneider, 76, was celebrated Saturday, January 4, 2003 at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Du Quoin. There was no visitation. Interment was in Sacred Heart cemetery.
Mr. Schneider died Monday, December 30, 2002 at St. Alexis Hospital in Hoffman Estates. He was born March 31, 1926 in Du Quoin. He and his wife have resided in Du Quoin since he retired in 1984.
Mr. Schneider was a 31-year resident of Hammond, Indiana, where he served as a school teacher for the entire time. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council #1298 in Du Quoin.
Surviving are his living wife, Loretta C. (Crider) Schneider, whom he married
August 16, 1948 in Du Quoin; children, Linda Harris of Arlington Heights and Robert (Clarissa) Schneider of St. John, Indiana; grandchildren, Jennifer and Jason Harris and Matthew Schneider; sisters and brother, Cleopha McNeely of Hot Springs, Arkansas, Eugene Schneider of Garnderville, Nevada and Ida Hess of Christopher and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, the late I.W. and Ida Schneider and his step-mother, Mary Buettner.

Elna H. Davison
Elna H. Davison, 77, of Du Quoin, passed away at 7:55 A.M., Tuesday, January 28, 2003 at the Marshall Browning Hospital in Du Quoin.
Elna was a homemaker. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Du Quoin, Catholic Daughters, and Sacred Heart Church Choir.
She was born March 6, 1925 at Du Quoin, the daughter of John and Cleta (Bailie) Howell.
She married
William R. Davison on April 10, 1948 at Du Quoin and he preceded her in death on August 10, 1995.
She is survived by two daughters - Elizabeth Ann Kopshever and husband Edward of McMurray, Pennsylvania and Dana Perardi and husband David of Du Quoin, one grandson - Brad Riggio and wife Michele of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, two granddaughters - Kelly Kopshever of McMurray, Pennsylvania and Jill Perardi of Dayton, Ohio, one great-grandson - Bryan Christopher of McMurray, Pennsylvania, one sister - Winifred "Mickey" Pitt and husband Harvey of Du Quoin, and one sister-in-law - Mary Armstrong and husband Bob of Du Quoin.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two brothers - Jack Howell and William Howell.
Funeral services were at Noon, Friday, January 31, 2003 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Du Quoin with Msgr. Harry Jerome officiating.
Friends called from 10 AM to 11:45 AM, Friday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.
Interment was in the Sacred Heart cemetery at Du Quoin.

Candy S. Chalmers
Candy S. Chalmers, 33, of Janesville, WI, passed away Monday, February 25, 2003 in University Hospital in Madison, WI.
She was born on June 24, 1969 in Stephensville, TX, the daughter of Richardand Pamela (King) Chalmers.
Candy is a member of the Pentecostal Faith, and she was self employed as a C.P.A.
Survivors include her two children: Krystal Ann Rucks of Janesville, WI, Roger Wade Williams of Beloit, WI; her mother: Pamela (Larry) Scott of Beloit, WI; her father: William Chalmers of Minneapolis, MN; eight brothers and sisters: Richard L. (Valerie) Swayne of Edgerton, WI, Patricia (Clint) Galloway, of DuQuoin, IL, William A (Daphne) Gray of Janesville, WI, Michelle L. Hall of Beloit, WI, Laurie Lovings of Beloit, WI, Shawn Scott of Chino, CA, Tammy Ziemer of Janesville, WI and Ami (D. J.) Vance of Janesville, WI; 18 nieces and nephews; Godmother: Debra Cook, other relatives and friends.
She is predeceased by a sister: Erin Kelly Chalmers, and grandparents: George & Naomi Ruth Swayne.
Funeral services were 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 1, 2003 in her mothers home, 1240 Ritsher St, Beloit, WI. Burial was in East Lawn cemetery. Visitation was in her mothers home, from 12 noon Thursday untill the time of services on Saturday.
Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI, assisted the family with arrangements.
Pallbearers were Pamela Scott, Michelle Hall, Patricia Galloway, Ami
Vance, Laurie Lovings and Valerie Swayne.

Lucile Nicholson Ware
Lucile Nicholson Ware, 85, of Du Quoin, passed away Thursday, February 13, 2003 at 2 p.m. in Fairview Nursing Center.
Mrs. Ware had been a Primary School Teacher and a member of First Baptist Church. She was also a member of Euzelian Sunday School class, Texas State Teachers, Corpus Christi Retired Teachers Association and a lifetime member of the NEA.
She was born July 15, 1917 at Ovett, Mississippi, the daughter of Sandy and Rennie (Davis) Nicholson. She married
David Clifton Ware on August 28, 1938 at Richton, Mississippi and he preceded her in death on November 10, 1979.
Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Sherry Ware of Victoria, Texas; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and James Taylor of Steeleville and Marsha and Paul 'Tiny' Brock of Du Quoin; five grandchildren, Lucy Eaton and husband Jeff of Steeleville, Kathy Ware of Victoria, Tex., Sarah Brock, Stacey Brock and David Brock, all of Du Quoin; one great-granddaughter, Alyssa Anne Eaton of Steeleville; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Frances and Freddie Strickland of Ellisville, Miss. and a special caregiver and friend, Nancy McClannah.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one sister, Froney Nicholson.
Funeral services were Sunday, February 16 at 3 p.m. at Mt. Olive Methodist cemetery in Ovett, Miss. with Rev. Dr. Allen Woodward officiating. Interment was in Mt. Olive Methodist cemetery in Ovett, Miss.
Friends called at the Neal-McClure Funeral Home on Friday, February 14 from 6 to 8 p.m. A brief service followed with Rev. Jerry Dunn and Rev. Bob Dickerson officiating.

Alice Purtill
Alice Purtill, 88, of Evansville, Indiana, formerly of Du Quoin then Chicago, passed away on Thursday, December 19, 2002 at Little Sisters of the Poor in Evansville, Indiana.
Alice attended Christ the King Catholic Church.
She is survived by a sister-in-law, Jane (Federer) Purtill of Henderson, Nevada; nephews, Ted, Tom and John Purtell, and Michael and James Purtill; one niece, Nancy Eckenroth and several great-nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held in Du Quoin at a later date.
Luella Caroline Ritter
Luella Caroline Ritter, 90, formerly of North Hickory Street in Du Quoin, passed away at 8:15 p.m. on Wednesday, February 26, 2003 at Marshall Browning Hospital in Du Quoin.
Mrs. Ritter had been a cook at Sacred Heart Cafeteria. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
She was born December 14, 1912 in Perry County, the daughter of John C. and Anna B. (Endres) Martin. She married
Victor H. Ritter on October 4, 1933 in Du Quoin and he preceded her in death on August 31, 1982.
Surviving are one son, Victor M. (Elizabeth) Ritter of Herrin; one daughter-in-law, Barbara (Gary) Beck of Du Quoin; one daughter-in-law, Chris Ritter of Du Quoin; 10 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and eight step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, four sisters, one son and one grandchild.
Funeral services were Saturday, March 1 at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Rev. Msgr. Harry Jerome officiating. Interment was in Sacred Heart cemetery.
The Rosary was said at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in Maxton Funeral Chapel.
Friends called after 6 p.m. Friday at Maxton Funeral Chapel in Du Quoin.

Dennis Earl Russell
Dennis Earl Russell, 56, of Jonesboro, Arkansas, passed away at 5:33 a.m. February 3, 2003.
Dennis was born at Marshall Browning Hospital in Du Quoin on June 8, 1946 to the Late Rev. Clifford Earl Russell, of Herrin, and Betty Baggett Corso of 108 S. Mulberry St.
Dennis worked at Alton Box Company in Jonesboro, Arkansas for 25 years as a designing engineer. He was a member of the Straw Floor Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon, Treasurer and Sunday School Teacher.
He was a devoted Cub fan for 40 years. Three days before his death he was honored with a phone call from Ryan Sandburg, a former Cub player, and Hall-of-Famer Ernie Banks, who was his all-time favorite.
He was preceded in death by his father, Rev. Clifford Russell, his paternal grandparents, Edward and Mabel Russell of Herrin and his maternal grandparents, Earl and Ruby Baggett of Du Quoin.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Russell; his son, Brice Russell and wife Carrie and his daughter, Michelle Russell Brown and her husband Steve Brown. He is also survived by his grandchildren, John Allen Chapman, Makayla Goetz, Halley Russell and Trey and Corey Benice, all of Jonesboro, Ark.; his mother, Betty Russell Corso of Du Quoin; two sisters, Kathy Hagler and husband Gerald of Du Quoin, Belinda Biggers and husband Fred of Walnut Ridge, Arkansas; aunts, uncles, several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
Dennis was the poster boy for the March of Dimes Polio foundation in 1952. Donations may be made to the Post Polio Syndrome Organization in Jonesboro, Ark, of which he was a member.
Gregg Funeral Home in Jonesboro, Ark. was in charge of funeral arrangements.
Visitation was held from 5 to 7 p.m. on February 4. Funeral services will be held at the Straw Floor Baptist Church at 10 a.m. on February 5.
He will be missed, but not forgotten.
