John Wheeler
John 'Mike' Wheeler, age 59, of Pinckneyville, passed away at his home after a long battle with cancer on Sunday morning, November 17, 2002.
John was born in Murphysboro on August 31, 1943, the son of Claude W. and Laura L. (Dillinger) Wheeler. He worked as an electrician and plumber for Holder's All American Home Center in Pinckneyville. He loved working on and restoring classic cars and fishing.
John is survived by his brother, Ronald F. Wheeler and wife Martha of Murphysboro; a sister, Patsy L. Patterson of Percy; an uncle, Bob Dillinger of Florida; an aunt, Velma Barioux of Louisiana; two cousins, Mary Jane Hunt and Nancy Parker; nephews, Wesley Patterson of Pinckneyville, Ken Patterson of Percy and Steven Wheeler of Indiana and his caregiver and friend, Wilma Norris. He was preceded in death by his parents and a nephew, Michael Patterson.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 20 at 11 a.m. at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville with Pastor Shaw DeMent officiating. Interment was in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Murphysboro.
Friends called at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home Tuesday evening from 6 until 9 p.m. and again on Wednesday from 8 a.m. until services.
Memorials may be made to the Paradise Baptist Church of Tamaroa.
Maxine L. Albers
Maxine L. Albers, 82, of Tamaroa, passed away at 12:55 P.M., Friday, December 27, 2002 at Fairview Nursing Center in Du Quoin.
Maxine was a homemaker. She was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, a long time member of the choir, member of Women's Fellowship, member of the Couples Class, and other church functions. She was also a member of "The Sweet Hearts", a group of friends who met at each others homes to eat, play games, party, and have good clean fun. They did this for twenty-five years or more. Bad health overcame some of them and the fun had to stop. Maxine loved parties and entertaining until bad health stopped all these good things. She will be missed for her flamboyant style of decorating her home and for parties.
She was born December 22, 1920 at Du Quoin, IL, the daughter of Edward and Irene (Roberts) Brock.
She married Harold Albers on June 12, 1940 at St. Luke's Evangelical Church at St. Louis, Missouri by Rev. Wm. Weltge, former pastor of St. John's United Church of Christ and close friend of the couple. Four years later, their only son, Fred Albers was born to them.
She is survived by one son - Fred Albers and wife Carla of Tamaroa, four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a host of relatives, friends and special people - Helen Higgerson, Mr. & Mrs. Glenn Martin, the James Williams family, and the Hirsch family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband on February 21, 2000, one sister - Lois Brock and one brother - Gerald Brock.
Graveside services were at 2:00 P.M., Monday, December 30, 2002 at the Mueller Hill Cemetery at Pinckneyville with Rev. Paul Schultz officiating.
Interment was in the Mueller Hill Cemetery at Pinckneyville.
The Searby Funeral Home of Du Quoin was in charge of arrangements.
Those attending the services were asked to go directly to the cemetery.
Helen Louise Beidel
Helen Louise Beidel died December 19 at her home in Carlsbad, New Mexico. She was the daughter of Nick and Glorene Gidak.
Surviving are her husband, Bill; two children, Pam of Spokane, Washington and Chris of Falls Church, Virginia; grandchildren and a sister, Mary Ann Harris of Du Quoin.
Preceding her in death were brothers, Edward and Donald; sister, Eileen Tennate and her parents.
Bonnie O. Black
Bonnie O. Black, 74, of Du Quoin, passed away Thursday, December 19, 2002 at 6:53 a.m. at Pinckneyville Community Hospital.
Mrs. Black was a homemaker and a member of the Methodist Church in Beaver Dam, Kentucky.
She was born July 20, 1928 in Salem, Indiana, the daughter of Raymond and Verna (Bane) Hopkins. She married Thomas V. Black on april 22, 1947 at Jasper, Ind. and he preceded her in death on February 19, 1992.
Surviving are three sons, Thomas Black of Du Quoin, John Black of Adena, Ohio and James Black of Steeleville; two daughters, Jenny Martin of Du Quoin and Linda Meyer of Du Quoin; two brothers, Mike Hopkins of Dowell and Ron Hopkins of Kingston, Tenn.; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and three brothers.
Funeral services were Sunday, December 22 at 2 p.m. at William L. Danks Funeral Home in Beaver Dam, Kentucky. Interment was in Sunnyside Cemetery in Beaver Dam, Kentucky.
Friends called Saturday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Neal-McClure Funeral Home in Du Quoin and Sunday from 12 to 2 p.m. at the William L. Danks Funeral Home in Beaver Dam, Kentucky.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
M. Shannon Bump
M. Shannon Bump, 80, of Elkville, passed away at 10:40 P.M., Tuesday, December 17, 2002 at his residence.
Mr. Bump, prior to his retirement in 1980, was the Director of Information Systems at the Du Quoin Packing Company. He later moved, temporarily, to Phoenix, Arizona and began work again for the state of Arizona. He retired from the state position in 1991 and returned to Elkville, Illinois. For a short while he worked as a programmer for the Carbondale Memorial Hospital. His last job was as a Head-Start school bus driver for SIUC in Carbondale and Murphysboro and Johnston City.
He graduated from California Western University with a masters degree in business in 1980 after his retirement. He was also a former member of Mensa.
Mr. Bump was a charter member of the Jackson County Stage Company where he was active as an actor in a number of plays.
Mr. Bump was a World War II veteran. He served in the Army Air Corp for three years of which two and one half years were in the European Theater before his honorable discharge in 1945.
He was born October 26, 1922 at Topeka, Kansas, the son of Wilson Raymond and Pearle Julia (Nee Pickering) Bump.
He married Reba Mae McCaleb on July 14, 1974 and she preceded him in death on March 22, 2002.
He is survived by a son - Shannon Kevin Bump of Sunset, Utah, two daughters - Laurel Raye Brandon of Florida and Karen Joan Bump of Prescott, Arizona, three step-daughters - Marla Preuett of Wichita, Kansas, Vicki Patton of Makanda, Illinois, and Debbie Horn of Dallas, Texas, nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one son - Ronnie Leon Bump who preceded him in death in March of 1943.
Visitation was held at 3 to 5 P.M., Saturday, December 21, 2002 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.
Per Mr. Bump's request no funeral service was held.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
Billy Carson Bunton
Billy Carson Bunton, 69, of Du Quoin, passed away Tuesday, December 3, 2002 at 3:55 p.m. at Marshall Browning Hospital.
Services were Friday, December 6, 2002 at 10 a.m. at the Neal-McClure Memorial Chapel in Du Quoin with Rev. C.L. McKinnies officiating. Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, December 5 and from 7:30 a.m. until time of service on Friday.
Burial was in Sunset Memorial Park in Du Quoin.
Bunton was a waterproofing contractor for 45 years.
He was a member of the Eagles Lodge in Du Quoin and Du Quoin VFW Post 513. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict.
Bunton was born February 8, 1933 in Du Quoin to Carson and Ruth (Hunter) Bunton. He married Shirley Hackelman in July of 1954 in Du Quoin and later married Jessie Gieger on January 23, 1989 at Louisville.
Surviving are two sons and a daughter-in-law: Robert Bunton of Du Quoin and Brad and Karen Bunton of Du Quoin; one daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Rex Piper of Herrin; brother James Bunton of Du Quoin; brothers and sisters-in-law Danny and Ruthie Bunton of Du Quoin and Jerry and Phyllis Bunton of Dowell; eight grandchildren Michael Bunton, Blain Bunton, Stacey Bunton, Rachel Bunton, Rex Piper, John Piper, Amber Bunton and Ashley Bunton and two great grandchildren Autumn Bunton and Madison Bunton.
He was preceded in death by a son, Steve, and two brothers, David and Michael.
LaVaughn Daffron
LaVaughn Daffron, 78, passed away in Mountain Home, Arkansas on December 24, 2002. She was born April 9, 1924 to Walter and Myrtle Queen in Winkle, Ill.
On October 31, 1941, she married Myral J. Daffron and he survives. Also surviving are one daughter; Deanna Swarthout (Gene) of Mountain Home, Ark.; one son, Randy Lee Daffron of Portland, Oregon; two brothers, Frank Queen of Pinckneyville and Clyde Queen of Oroville, California; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and three sisters.
Funeral services were held in Mountain Home, Ark. on Saturday, December 28 and a graveside service was held at Old Rose Hill Cemetery in Marion, Ill. on Monday, December 30, 2002. Arrangements were by Roller Funeral Home in Mountain Home, Ark.
