Robert E. Buerkle
Robert E. Buerkle, 72, of Du Quoin, passed away at 3:15 A.M., Thursday, March 13, 2003 at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.
Robert was a retired heavy equipment operator for the coal mine. He had worked for many years in the area as a master carpenter. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Du Quoin, VFW, and UMW of A. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of Korean War.
He was born October13, 1930 at Du Quoin, IL, the son of Frank E. and Clara P. (Morgan) Buerkle.
He married Betty Shepard on October 13, 1951 at Du Quoin, IL and she survives.
He is survived by his wife of Du Quoin, two daughters - Randee Slover and husband David of Du Quoin, and Victoria Albon and husband Dean of Elkville, one son - Frankie Buerkle and fiancee Becky Washer of Du Quoin, one sister - Louise Heumann and husband Howard of Du Quoin, and four grandchildren - Christine Slover of Chicago, IL, Brianne Slover of Du Quoin, Joel E. Albon and Kathryn Albon of Elkville.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services were at 10:00 A.M., Monday, March 17, 2003 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Msgr. Harry Jerome officiating.
Rosary was recited at 9:30 A.M. Monday at the funeral home.
Friends called from 5 to 8 P.M., Sunday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.
Interment was in the Sacred Heart Cemetery at Du Quoin.
Military graveside rites were conducted by Du Quoin VFW Post 513.

Sirilda Pauline Marlow Cook
Sirilda Pauline Marlow Cook, 85, of Du Quoin, passed away at 3:05 P.M., Tuesday, March 11, 2003 at Fair Acres Nursing Home in Du Quoin.
She was born December 21, 1917 at Tamaroa, IL, the daughter of Clarence Edgar and Belle (Wilkes) Marlow.
She married Jesse L. Cook on October 12, 1939 at Perryville, Missouri and he preceded her in death on June 3, 1996.
Pauline was a well known seamstress in the community, and also a gifted artist. Until the time of her marriage, she was a member of the Nine Mile Baptist Church, where she attended with her family. Following her marriage and moving to Du Quoin, she united with First Baptist Church, where she served on many committees, was a teacher and pianist in the children's department for fifteen years, and after that she became a member and teacher of the Euzelian Class and active in WMU until the time of her illness.
Surviving are her son - Bob (Sally) Cook and daughter - Joann (Jerry) Dunn of Du Quoin, grandchildren - Melissa (Shane) Bishop, Paul (Christina) Martin, Christopher (Amy) Martin, Sarah and Susan Cook, great grandchildren - Zec and Lydia Bishop, Sierra and Devon Cook, Jessica, Gage and Will Martin. Also surviving is one sister - Mrs. Mary Valier of Du Quoin.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, four brothers and one sister.
Funeral services were at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, March 15, 2003 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Rev. Shane Bishop and Rev. Jerry Dunn officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 8 P.M., Friday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.
Interment was in the IOOF Cemetery at Du Quoin.

Rose Marie Crumbacher
Rose Marie Crumbacher, 88, of Du Quoin, passed away at 11:45 A.M., Monday, March 3, 2003 at Fair Acres Nursing Home in Du Quoin.
Rose was owner of Rosie's Bar & Grill for twenty-nine years. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Du Quoin.
She was born October 25, 1914 at Du Quoin, IL, the daughter of Joseph and Joann (Ferrari) Sgroi.
She married Leslie E. Crumbacher and he preceded her in death in 1989.
She is survived by two sons - Charles Crumbacher and wife Katy of Alton, IL and Joe Crumbacher and fiancee Penny Porter of Du Quoin, one daughter - Donna (Bobbie) Chaney of Du Quoin, one brother - Joe Sgroi of California, one sister - Sarah Kosma of Bradley, IL, seven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers and one sister.
Funeral services were at 11:30 A.M., Thursday, March 6, 2003 at Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Msgr. Harry Jerome officiating.
Friends called from 9:30 to 11:30 A.M., Thursday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.
Interment was in the Sacred Heart Cemetery at Du Quoin.

Nacy Ellen Flavell
Nancy Ellen Flavell, 72, of Du Quoin, passed away Saturday, March 15, 2003 in Columbia, Mo.
Ms. Flavell was a Social Worker for St. Louis City and St. Louis County in Missouri. She completed six years of college with a Masters Degree. Ms. Flavell had lived in Du Quoin for the past 15 years. She was a member of the Domestic Service Club.
She was born September 3, 1930 in Du Quoin, the daughter of Lyle D. and Celeste (Naumer) Flavell.
Surviving are one sister, Mary O. Appuhn of Du Quoin; two nephews, Bob (Jan) Appuhn of Logan, Utah and Bill (Virginia) Appuhn of Du Quoin; one niece, Nonnie (Roger) Pyle of Columbia, Mo.; three great-nieces, Katharine Appuhn, Maria Logan and Kristian Baker; four great-great nieces and two great-great nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.
Funeral services were Saturday, March 22 at 3 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Du Quoin with Rev. Lee Tyler officiating. Interment was in the IOOF Cemetery in Du Quoin.
Friends called from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Delbert Thurman Gillis
Delbert Thurman Gillis, 84, of Heyworth, passed away at 10:25 a.m. Tuesday, March 11 at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center, Bloomington.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 15 at the Heyworth Christian Church, Heyworth. Rev. Kurt Flora officiated. Burial was Sunday, March 16 at Mueller Hill Cemetery, Pinckneyville, with graveside military rites accorded. Rev. Howard Self officiated. Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 14 at Calvert-Belangee-Bruce Funeral Home, Heyworth, with Masonic services at 7:30 and visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Heyworth Educational Foundation.
Mr. Gillis was born September 7, 1918 in Oakland to Herman and Nancy (Gillis) Gillis. He married Ellaura D. Engelhardt August 19, 1947 in Oakland. She passed away August 14, 2001.
Surviving are one son: Paul E. (Carol) Gillis of Portland, Maine; two daughters: Mary Jane (Rodger) Zook of Heyworth and Melba D. Myler of Indiana; five grandchildren: Ryan Ehrenkaufer of Normal, Jennifer and Amanda Zook of Heyworth and Eric and Andrew Gillis of Portland, Maine and his twin brother: Albert (Jeana) Gillis of Littleton, Colo.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: Elmer and Marvin Gillis.
He graduated from Oakland High School in 1936. He then served in the United States Army in Northern Africa and in Italy during WWII. After his discharge from the army, he wa a baker at Hines V.A. Hospital in Maywood for 35 years. He relocated to Heyworth in 1981 after his retirement.
He and his wife enjoyed gardening, walking and community events. They traveled extensively covering 48 states. Throughout his life he was an avid bicyclist.
He was a member of the Heyworth Christian Church, Heyworth and the Oakland V.F.W. He was a 32nd degree mason and was involved with the Boy Scouts of America for many years.
Maxine Hilt
Maxine Hilt, 79, formerly of Tamaroa, passed away at 4:03 P.M., Sunday, March 16, 2003 at Elmwood Nursing Center in Maryville, IL.
Maxine was a homemaker. She had attended Tamaroa Missionary Baptist Church and Du Quoin Methodist Church. She was a member of VFW Auxiliary and American Legion Auxiliary.
She was born June 30, 1923 at Tamaroa, IL, the daughter of Ray and Mary (Koenegstein) Stull.
She married Finis J. Hilt on July 19, 1946 at Morganfield, Kentucky and he preceded her in death on August 6, 1989.
She is survived by two sons - Charles M. Rankin and wife Rose of Mt. Vernon, IL and Bill Hilt and wife Patty of Granite City, IL, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son - Thomas Hilt, one brother - Orval Stull and one half sister - Helen Marlow.
Funeral services were at 10:00 A.M., Thursday, March 20, 2003 at Searby Funeral Home in Tamaroa with Rev. Carl Mesiti officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 8 P.M., Wednesday at the Searby Funeral Home in Tamaroa.
Interment was in the Tamaroa Cemetery at Tamaroa.
